Just happened upon this place while skiing. The place is decked out in memorabilia and just sitting there in our booth I was entertained by what was in our booth. Now for the review: the staff is welcoming and attentive. Salad bar was worth it. Both dinners were very good and the ingredients fresh. Apparently they use local suppliers like farmers etc. I don't know about the bad reviews but we are from NYC and they exceeded our expectations. What a classic place. First off, unlimited Monument Farms milk...both chocolate and regular. Incredible. Definitely the best in Vermont; fresh, clean, and rich. Took our friends from Arizona here and they drank 14 glasses of the milk. In fact, one guy loved the milk so much, he had 7 glasses in one sitting!The salad bar is good. Salad and bread are fresh, although it is a bit limited and I wish they had a shredded cheddar cheese option for salad toppings (only blue cheese and what looked like feta). Along with my salad bar, I got the French onion soup, which was surprisingly good. Rich in taste and loaded with herbs. Would love to come back on a cold winter day to have it. Overall, the service was good and the waitress seemed to be slightly annoyed with us. I love the decor and atmosphere of the place; funky and perfect to take out-of-town visitors or your family. The entrees can get a bit expensive, so we decided to stick to an appetizer and unlimited salad bar. The food was mediocre at best. The chef needs a salt shaker, as all of the food was under-seasoned. For the prices being charged the food should really be better prepared. It seemed like the quality of ingredients was available, just not brought together right. The fish was overcooked, and the pasta too thick. Don't bother with the delicata Squash side dish. I got 4 very thin hollow slices with the inedible skin still on. I managed to scrape maybe a teaspoon of squash out of the whole thing. Broiled scallops were ok, moist but overly garlicky and seemed closer to 4 ounces than 8. Plenty of rice though. Really miss the salad bar. Next time I'll get a salad with some shrimp or chicken - maybe it will be better. My husband had prime rib with shrimp and mashed potatoes and it was very good. Service was very attentive and friendly, but slow due to short staffing. We've had great meals here in the past and I hope they can recover from COVID. Still great atmosphere and decor but I hope it doesn't just become a hamburger joint like so many other places. read more

We were staying in Middlebury for one night and driving by and stopped here for dinner. We ate outside on the deck because it was a gorgeous day. I got the bourbon glazed beef tips over mashed potatoes, and my husband got a hamburger and onion rings. Both were absolutely delicious and cooked to perfection. Amazing atmosphere, pretty average food. I order a crock of onion soup which was pretty small for its price, but it was very good. The wings are great, too. Me and my wife absolutely love this restaurant!! The only reason I'm not giving this a full 5 star rating is because of their sky high prices! The two of us were there tonight and the bill was $90 with dessert and salad bar, and that's with no alcohol either, we only had sodas since it's a long drive over. But the USDA ribeye steak was amazing!!! And the chocolate brownie sundae was to die for. Another down fall is their dessert menu doesn't have any prices listed. Hands down, I definitely recommend this restaurant, just bring a thick wallet with you. The service was great, very nice waitress, great menu selection, and a huge salad bar!!! Also is recommend making a reservation, they're often quite packed and if you just show up you could be wedding around for 20-30 minutes, even the bar had no available seats. A fun, regionally-interesting restaurant with an eclectic interior and friendly staff. I had the sirloin steak which was fine... Not spectacular, but enjoyable. That was pretty much the consensus of our party of four. But the service was so SLOW! Two and a half hours for a drink at the bar and dinner. We were constantly looking around to find our server, which isn't easy because of all the nooks and crannies in the place. If I could be assured of better service next time, I'd go back. We have eaten here several times and the food is so-so. But tonight was a disaster! Our meal started out ok - but our server, Brittany brought us appetizers and drinks and then disappeared for 45 minutes. Several tables that were seated as we were eating our appetizers got their food before us. We sat for close to an hour with empty glasses. Brittany finally said "I keep checking for your food but I should probably get Tiffany" (whoever Tiffany is). As we were waiting for "Tiffany", Brittany offered me a beer. It would have been nice if she had offered it an hour earlier but it was obvious she was oblivious and useless. Then Tiffany The "manager" came out and plopped our cold meals down without any explanation. The steak was cold and prime rib was overcooked. The ribs were dry and barely had sauce. The rib po-boy was absolutely disgusting. I haven't zeroed a waitress in 10-15 years but tonight was special. It will be a long time before I go back to Fire and Ice. read more

Unfortunately this meal was as disappointing as the one I had several years ago. I was reluctant to go but a vegetarian in the party wanted to try the Mock Duck. I thought with a new crew it had to get better. I was so wrong. The Mock Duck was awful, all you could taste was the salt and it arrived with the food literally overflowing the plate. More is not better.. The salad bar was mediocre at best. Peel your own shrimp? Really. Stale bread. The filet mingon was tough. And how do you ruin mashed potato? I had the salmon spinach salad which was tasty if not a bit on the dry side. It all comes down to the quality of the food. I just dont this was worth the $140. On the plus side our server was great! My husband and I have been making one yearly trip to Fire & Ice since we got married 25 years ago. Prices have increased in that time, and they've done away with the deal where you paid a set amount extra and turned your meal into a three-course meal with the salad bar, entree, and then dessert. The decor hasn't changed much, but what I love is that the quality and value also haven't changed. We always take on too much when we go to Fire & Ice. Each year, we also say that we need to learn to just get the salad bar, but walking up to the entrance and smelling the steaks is our downfall. Last night, I was craving prime rib, as it's not something I have more than once a year at most. So I ordered that, along with the salad bar, and that was just too much, but so very enjoyable. The salad bar last night was the best I've seen it. I love the chilled shrimp and always have, but standouts last night were the cold soba noodle and mushroom salad. That salad was amazing. Sushi (seemed to be a vegetarian roll) was not impressive and the one thing I could live without. The crab pasta salad was also awesome. You have three boats filled with options. Many of the vegetables come from a local farm. Those and the dressings are in one boat. There's another filled with marinated items like artichoke hearts, olives, mushrooms, pickles, etc. The final boat has the seafood and fruit options. Then there is a bar with homemade breads, cheeses, and all the toppings you could ever want for your salad that range from croutons to nuts and seeds to crispy onions. My prime rib was cooked perfectly and the mashed potatoes were the best I've ever had. The gravy served with them was also amazing. The beer list is impressive and gave me a new option to try. My husband and I are Untappd fans, so we've spent a couple years building up our list of beers we've tried. It's always nice to find new ones. Shout out to Hogback Mountain Brewing in Bristol for an amazing IPA to go with our meals! In the end, our very filling, very satisfying dinner for two, including two beers and the add-on salad bar, came to $84. Not bad considering how stuffed we felt at the end. read more

Fire and Ice is reasonably good. We enjoyed our food there (lobster on the surf and turf was a bit tough...but why am I ordering lobster in Vermont, anyway?). The salad bar is fine, and the fresh bread bar and big wheel o' cheese are fun. The stand-out, actually, was the fried mozzarella appetizer. My family decided to stop here last night for dinner on our way home from Burlington. We've been here before so we knew the food was good. Our party (6) was seated immediately for being prime time for dinner on a Saturday night. The menu is pretty expensive. Average per person is about 18-30 for just an entree. Based on our previous dinner here, it was well worth it. Our waitress was super kind and polite as well as very quick. The salad bar is pretty good size. It's has a little bit of everything for anyone. It's big enough to just order the salad bar for your dinner. The entire salad bar was fully stock and fresh. I had a little bit of everything and the only thing I disliked was the sushi which was mostly just rice. I ordered the Dreamicle for a drink which was flavorless and bland. I ended up going to the dairy bar to get milk for my dinner because I hate to send things back. The chocolate milk was out so I had plain milk. I had the Tip of the Tongue special which was pretty good but had to bring home because I was full from the salad bar. Overall, I was kind of disappointed with my stop this time at Fire and Ice. For being pricey, I believe I shouldn't leave feeling this way. Maybe I had higher expectations from a previous time here for dinner. read more

Had a great dinner there a couple of nights ago right before dropping my kids off at summer camp. Food was delicious all around. I had the quesadilla with extra guacamole which was so good that I had them pack up the leftovers (way too much food) for the trip back home. Lyndsay, our server, was professional yet friendly and even ran after us after my daughter left her cell phone behind. We sat in a booth just off the bar area which was lively yet not out-of-control noisy. It's also fun to check out all the elements of the decor which are really cool. Every year we go here for my birthday (this became my bday dinner place when I turned 16 and I just turned 32 this past December) and I have yet to be disappointed. The salad bar is amazing as it is not only large, but is set inside old boats. There are three different sections of the salad bar including one that has shrimp, seafood salad and sushi (king crab legs on the weekends as well). They have a giant block of cheese that you can cut from and fresh bread that you can slice as well. Also, you can help yourself to either regular milk or chocolate milk by Monument Farms as part of the salad bar as well. The mozzarella sticks are unlike any I've had at other restaurants. They come in a triangular shape and are just oozing with cheese. While a bit on the expensive side, I definitely recommend the filet mignon as it practically melts in your mouth with incredible flavor. I admit that the prices keep me from going here more than a couple times a year (my mom loves this place for mother's day as well), but the food is worth it whenever I go. If you're willing to settle for an appetizer and the salad bar, you will get your money's worth and it is much more affordable. read more

I come to Middlebury from Burlington two or three times a week. This is my second time at Fire and Ice and it was even better than the first. The food is great! I had been going to Two Brothers for dinners but after repetedly VERY slow food service and overpriced food I decided to try other places. Fire and Ice ROCKS. The wings are great! The potato skins are the best I've had since I left Chicago. The steak tips were melt in your mouth yummy! There is stuff to look at EVERYWHERE and it made me feel like I was at a family summer home. Often when places have a lot of "nic-nacs" hanging around they are dirty or have a layer of dust on them Fire and Ice is CLEAN! Fire and Ice is my new Dinner spot and I'll for sure be bringing friends for drinks. read more

I have eaten at many a steakhouse, including the big names in Boston, Omaha, and Orlando. The filet, and prime rib here is as good if not better, and the price tag is a lot less. Salad bar area is amazing with local farms identified at each station. Free local milk which is great. If you are traveling through Middlebury area, this is a must do. This restaurant is as quintessential Vermont as you are going to find with the servers as nice as can be, attentive, and professional. The decor alone is worth the price of admission. read more

I've been going to Fire and Ice for my birthday dinner ever since I was 7 years old! But this year I decided that something has seriously changed and I am not going back there next year. The restaurant was once of the the BEST in Vermont. The salad bar was endless and the food plentiful and tasty. In 2008 the experience was tepid at best, and I gave it one more shot for my January 2009 birthday. My conclusion is that someone or something has gone a little rotten at Fire and Ice. The dinner plates set in front of each of my birthday dinner guests was served on plates that looked like they had greasy fingerprints all over them, elements of the dish were "splatterd," and my filet was dry as sand paper. Shouldn't someone be looking into a details like those before a dish leaves the kitchen? The salad bar is still okay, but other restaurants in the area offer better salad plates for the same price range. "Weathervane" in Burlington has a good one, or "Wobbly Barn" in Killington! The final portion of my last Fire and Ice dinner that made me decide not to go back was the end of the birthday Polaroid! The waitstaff used to take a canded photo of the birthday guest while he or she blew out the candle. I've got a stack of my past Polaroids at home! But this year they took a didgital photo and asked for my information so they could send it to me. Not the same! So this is farewell Fire and Ice!! Very unique restaurant by any standards. Decorated like no other. Food average, valued too high, presentation plain, needs improvement. Menu somewhat misleading. Listed chicken was a thin chicken filet on both different meals that listed chicken breast as main ingredient. Salad bar is way overpriced and should be free with the meal. Had to go through this town since we know someone dear to us that went to Middlebury College. She recommended two eating venues and we chose Fire & Ice for lunch. We sat in the Big Moose Pub area and ordered a Von Trapp Pilsner for hubby. Our lunch was Salmon Cakes (house-made Atlantic salmon cakes over dressed baby spinach, finished with a Thai chili aioli) for hubby and I had The Wedge (1/4 iceberg lettuce wedge with grape tomatoes, bacon crumbles, topped with house-made blue cheese dressing, garnished with Blue Ledge Farm "Middlebury Blue" cheese). Wishing I could give more stars, as this place is really cool looking and the reviews had been great overall. When you walk in, you don't even feel like you're in a restaurant but a museum of sorts with lots to look at on every wall and in every corner! The host was very friendly and showed us to our table in a timely manner. However, our waitress seemed like she was rushing and did not come off as friendly. She didn't really check in on us after receiving our food and I wish she had, as I was very disappointed in the entrees we got. The calamari and coconut shrimp appetizers were the best part of the meal. Although- as feedback to the chefs- you shouldn't be serving some awesome crispy fried calamari directly in the tomato sauce- serve that on the side so it doesn't get soggy! My husband ordered the rib eye with mushrooms and onions on top and I ordered the sirloin steak stuffed with lobster. I don't even think they seasoned either of our dishes and for one of the first times, I actually used a salt shaker from the table to season my meal. It didn't help, as the lobster tasted like it was frozen and watery, and the steak was one of the driest and toughest pieces of meat I've ever had. It tasted like they cooked it in the microwave. I wish I had gotten the rib eye, although it definitely was not on par with any other rib eye I've eaten or cooked myself. At the end of the meal, I overheard the diners next to us (the husband got the same dish I got) talk to the manager who had checked in on them (again, no check in for us I guess!) and they also complained about their steak and he took it off their bill. I'm usually not one to do that at all but I wish I could have given my feedback, as $110 for two people for the kind of steak we got is just not worth it at all. Kind of disappointed that the reviews I had read before going here didn't appear to be the same experience we ended up having. read more
