I have been here with my parents a few times for dinner and the food and the ambiance of the antiques, boats, Native American pieces are spectacular! Excellent! In Middlebury on a college tour with son who has Celiac Disease. Waiter was very educated on gluten free dining. My son had a steak cooked in a separate pan to avoid cross contamination. We had a disappointing meal. First, the good stuff: the decor is amazing. A labrynth of dining rooms with the walls covered with interesting historical artifacts. And the staff was terrific. Everyone was friendly and attentive. But, the kitchen needs to get their act together. My sea scallops were overcooked and rubbery. The baked potato was old and dry. My son ordered a medium burger and it was bright red rare. My daughter said that her salad was "fine." The nachos were good. We were excited when we arrived, but bummed when we left. My daughter and I enjoy eating here a couple times a month. The salad bar is always good, lots of variety, especially on the weekends when they have soups and hot items. Stumbled upon this restaurant after attending the annual Middlebury Festival on the Green. My family and I were hungry and at this point in time most establishments are closed in Vermont, so in we went. At first glance, it definitely seems a little more upscale than anything else in the town. The ambience is very old school upper echelon, like you just boarded a fancy cruise ship-it was beautifully lit yet dim at the same time-and as you take in the sight, you're led to your table (but not before passing that salad and bread bar!) If you're anything like me, you love carbs, and you love bread. When I glossed over the menu and saw that the soup & salad bar option came with unlimited trips, my eyes began to beam; though whether or not there was a fine print on the soup NOT actually being unlimited it completely eluded me. You get ONE soup of your choice, and the salad and bread are refillable at the bar outside. I picked the clam chowder and was immediately displeased not only by the portion, but the lack of temperature, flavor, and clam. The next form of disappointment came in the form of their bread which is quite deceiving to the eye. Though it may look illustrious from other reviews, it is everything but. The bread is hardly fresh, left to be self served (meaning you must cut from the same loaf others have touched, even though there is cloth, blehhh.) But aside that point, the crust is just lacking in any crunch or chew and the interior of the bread is excessive. Be warned that menu options are a pretty penny here and are a little steep. My siblings complained about their dish being rather bland and my dad wasn't exactly jumping out his seat over his plate either. Overall, the salad bar definitely takes the cake here in terms of getting your money's worth in food. While I wish we had the opportunity to jump in on the seafood (we were headed to Maine anyway) the prices definitely deterred us as we weren't even sure if they would be able to deliver the quality we were looking for. 3 stars simply for that unlimited salad and for the attentiveness of our waitress who was nothing but kind and constantly checking up on us. But if I could have redone the whole thing, I definitely would have just missed out on it. Nothing to make noise about. read more

Fire & Ice has been a sometimes place for me throughout the last few years. The restaurant is huge with an immense amount of seating in cleverly themed and cozy rooms. The decor is particularly interesting with hundreds upon hundreds of random pictures hung throughout the dinning areas. As a double whammy Fire & Ice also is home to the Moose Pub, a more relaxed branch of the restaurant that offers the same menu, a bar, and slightly more casual environment. The entire floor plan in connected and although the climate is slightly different in the pub the meshing of the two dynamics isn't the issue. The menu runs on a bit on the pricy side in my opinion. Even the pub far options run $14+ for a typical pub far entree (sandwich or burger and fries). On the other side of the menu a typical dinner entree will break $20 and continue from there. For the price I feel like the food lacks in quality a bit. On more than one occasion I've been disappointed with the preparation of my steak, slightly overcooked. That being said I've really enjoyed their salmon although a 4-6oz portion usually leaves me hungry. The salad bar is a Fire & Ice staple and can be added to any entree on either the pub or traditional menu. The salad bar gets two thumbs up from me. It is well maintained and clean with some quirky items like veggie sushi rolls, carrot cake and Monument Farms Chocolate Milk. Given the prevalence of other spots in Middlebury I feel like Fire & Ice has become a middle of the pack option. I'm sure I'll go again but it's not my first choice for an evening out. read more

We showed up here on a busy summer night with iffy weather, asking to sit outside. They could not have been nicer or more accommodating. We sat on a covered porch and were afraid of bad service. Gumbo was tasteless and I felt forced to liven it up with some hot sauce but the so-called Sriracha seemed to me like plain old Tabasco and made a bad dish even worse. My partner had the Bar Steak and, according to her, it was about average. For a meal of over $100 (pre-tip), I'd pass on this place. We came here New Years Eve for Dinner and we had a wonderful time. Our reservation was for 8:30 but our plans before got canceled so we decided to sit at the bar in the meantime. They sat us about 45 min early and we ordered. We had a wonderful waitress by the name of Willow who provided amazing service and went out of her way to make sure we had everything we needed and that we were taken care of. The Food was delicious and everything was cooked the exact way we ordered it. We loved the salad bar and the chocolate milk for dessert was really the cherry on top. My wife and I were married in Middlebury in February of 2008. We returned every year for the past 11 years. The funny thing is for almost all of those years we drove by fire and Ice on our way to either a brewery or some of the shops in town but never stopped. Most of our eating was done at the Inn we were married at. Anyways, we read some yelp reviews and and they were all positive and then we got to the reviews on the salad bar. As far as salad bars go this restaurant has a great variety of options. I don't eat a lot of bread but they had a ton of options. A lot of local items like cheese, milk...My one complaint is and we didn't realize is it does not come with a protein. So in that sense it makes it a little pricey but all in all it is a great option if you are in Middlebury. read more

Crispy skinned, tender duck in a luscious brandy/peppercorn sauce---yum! Apart from the drool-worthy duck, F&I offers a menu not safe for vegetarians. Tough. Let them eat tofu! The rest of us can feast on steaks, prime rib, and all sorts of poultry and seafood. The salad bar is legendary and includes the usual salad trimmings as well as peel & eat shrimp and a huge block of Vermont Cheddar. Did I say yum yet? We arrived at Fire & Ice with high expectations, despite the mixed reviews we read online. The atmosphere was different; there were themes for each room (library, college, train, etc...) Usually, restaurants with massive amounts of decorations are red flags for me, because the decorations are often coated in dust, however, I found Fire & Ice to be spotless. Our server was friendly enough, not extraordinary, but not terrible either. Unfortunately, our food left us unimpressed. Known for their prime rib and salad bar that was what we ordered. Two prime ribs dipped in au jus, three salad bars, one soup, and two mixed drinks. The drinks came immediately, but they were very weak. The salad bar wasn't much to brag about, and not really worth the $13.00 (or $6.00 extra with an entree). It was a normal salad bar with some extras one doesn't always find. The extras included, stale bread, a hunk of Vermont cheddar, over boiled shrimp, very sad veggie sushi (over cooked rice, minced up veggies), carrot cake, and canned fruit. Everything was pretty fresh, just nothing special. The soup was chicken barley- mushy barely and vegetables in broth with 2 small chunks of dry chicken. The prime rib was okay. It reminded me of what one would receive at a wedding- not very flavorful and in much need of a sprinkle of salt and pepper despite being dipped in au jus. Perhaps if I went in with lower expectations I wouldn't be so critical, but after paying the $120 bill I regret not preparing a similar meal at home. What a wonderful experience to have so many fun decorations and old photos in this surprisingly open maze of a restaurant! Just walking through was fun! It was less fun when we received a unenthusiastic greeting from the owner, who wore a name tag identifying himself as such, and then watched him seat three other parties that walked in the door after us even though we had a reservation. When my husband and our two daughters were finally seated, we were placed literally in the most remote isolated corner of the entire busy place where we ate alone. Had we been waiting for everyone else in that section to clear out? I loved our server (and I'm thankful she remembered us up there) and I don't mind spending money on great food (and the food was great) but I'm really bothered by the treatment by the owner just because we came with children (well-behaved, by the way!). read more

Yet another 5 star experience at Fire & Ice in Vermont! They never seem to let me down! Dinner came out perfect and the price was more than fair! Not to mention great company. Coming to Fire & Ice is always a treat! I get to come here maybe 2-3 times a year on a good year. Mainly because of the travel involved. Its about an hours worth of travel from the Essex area with the traffic. So I don't go up to Middlebury to often but when I do this is where I go! The food last night was perfect! The salad bar, Cheese sticks and even the dinners all came out great! I tried the Greek wrap with a double baked potato. The wrap was ok but the potato was perfect! The service as always was great as well. They came back to check on us a few times and make sure things where good and refilled drinks when it was needed. Hell we even hung around after dinner talking for a little while and they didn't even rush us out. Pricing was more than fair as well. 2 dinners, 2 salad bars, 2 drinks and an app came out around $60 before tip. Great price for a restaurant of this caliber. Over all it was another great night at Fire & Ice! This place comes highly recommended by me! It is hands down my favorite place to eat in Vermont. The place is cozy and has a winter lodge feel to it with lots of wood and pictures on the walls. Food is excellent all-around with a large menu. Massive salad bar which is worth it even if it doesn't come with the meal. Prime rib is a must to order. Fish are fine too. Desserts are a bit heavy on ice cream and chocolate but tasty. Fire and Ice has a great salad bar. We have typically just gone there for the "Vegetarian Ballroom", which used to give you unlimited trips to the salad bar (minus the shrimp section), plus soup and a side (starch or vegetable) all for just under 10 bucks. It is tough to beat that, 3+ courses (because the salad bar includes terrific carrot cake) for 10 bucks. The food was never mind-blowing, but the experience was 4 stars worthy. Unfortunately, on our recent visit, we discovered that recent changes in ownership/management have also changed the salad bar options on the menu. The vegetarian ballroom option no longer exists! Now, there is only one unlimited salad bar option, and it is the same price whether you want the shrimp or not. The price is now $13 and while that may not seem like much of a difference, it is still a 30% increase for one person. For $14, you can get a veggie burger and add the salad bar to it, which just doesn't seem equitable. Now, the price of the salad bar option is comparable to a vegetarian meal at most other restaurants in town, and even though it is still 3 courses for $13, it is just somehow not as appealing. The experience is still great, all of the kitschy decorations and unique dining areas within the restaurant make it a must-try at some point in Middlebury and an institution. However, if you only have one meal in town, it might be advantageous to look elsewhere. read more

What a classic place. First off, unlimited Monument Farms milk...both chocolate and regular. Incredible. Definitely the best in Vermont; fresh, clean, and rich. Took our friends from Arizona here and they drank 14 glasses of the milk. In fact, one guy loved the milk so much, he had 7 glasses in one sitting!The salad bar is good. Salad and bread are fresh, although it is a bit limited and I wish they had a shredded cheddar cheese option for salad toppings (only blue cheese and what looked like feta). Along with my salad bar, I got the French onion soup, which was surprisingly good. Rich in taste and loaded with herbs. Would love to come back on a cold winter day to have it. Overall, the service was good and the waitress seemed to be slightly annoyed with us. I love the decor and atmosphere of the place; funky and perfect to take out-of-town visitors or your family. The entrees can get a bit expensive, so we decided to stick to an appetizer and unlimited salad bar. Just happened upon this place while skiing. The place is decked out in memorabilia and just sitting there in our booth I was entertained by what was in our booth.
