Did a good job. Not a lot of companies out there do outdoor propane fire pit repair so was glad to find this one. Took a long while to get scheduled for job completion, but that's typical of the demand on home services companies these days and the labor challenges posed by the pandemic. They kept me up to date on progress throughout. My job was a tougher one than anticipated and they had to bust through a 4-inch concrete patio to run new line, then repair. Slightly more than a year to respond to our negative review - Hmm! Well as I said then, the over sized burner has too many gas igniting holes, causing inefficient yellow flames. Everything was adjusted as much as possible to reduce the soot and try to get more heat by the repair company we hired in place of FBJ. But without soldering some of the 13 jets, I'm left with an expensive blackened, Grand Canyon log set that's basically a useless gas hog. Ironically our old set was much more efficient and just as attractive as our soot covered set from FBJ. We wasted $1,400 three years ago with this company. Their more than a year old response to our review is rather empty unless they choose to correct this burner problem. Be careful about what you choose to have FBJ do to your natural gas fireplace. read more

We called AZ Fireplaces to repair our propane fireplace in our home. We wasted over $200 on having a tech from that company come out. I guess that guy sorta diagnosed the problem correctly, but didn't know how to fix it. I called their office to ask what I should do and they recommended Fire by James. The recommendation was worth the money of the service visit. James happened to be in the area when I spoke with the girl in the office at Fire by James. She called him. He stopped by an hour later. He properly diagnosed the problem. Repaired the problem. Improved the performance of our fireplace. Made some recommendations about the tank outside and gave us a quote. I highly recommend this company. Chris came over when scheduled. I gave him a summary of my gas fireplace problems and why I thought there was a faulty safety control that was causing the fireplace to cut out after a few minutes. I was wrong, he knew exactly what to look for. He diagnosed the problem within 10 minutes and had everything apart and was correcting the problem. This review is meant to warn customers 'not to get burned' by hiring "Fire by James," given the scorching he inflicted on us. We had a custom gas burner and top quality Grand Canyon log set installed by "Fire by James" owner- James - for $1,350 on 8/23/2018. It worked for the 2018-2019 season, but would not start up the next season even after replacing batteries in the remote. Sounded like the pilot would not ignite, i.e., clicking with no ignition. Called James in 1/2020 to troubleshoot. After talking with him, still couldn't get ignition in 2/2020. Then COVID hit a month later and we didn't want anyone in house, like everyone else, until things calmed down by 4/2021. Called James again to make appointment and he texted after 3 days that he would charge $169 just to come over, and would add on costs from there. Now I realize we were entering our third season with the system, but it had only worked for one. Given that we paid James well for the original install, his visit charge alone was exorbitant, so we called another outfit, "Now Plumbing." All exposed gas lines were inspected after literally disassembling the entire hearth, and several incorrect connections on gas valves were found. The pilot was laying under the volcanic rocks and had never been mounted to the burner, the orifice was clogged and incorrectly sized, and James had installed too large/expensive a burner for the size of our fireplace. Now Plumbing mounted the previously buried pilot, installed a correctly drilled, custom orifice to attempt to limit the black soot we had experienced after James' original installation. All above unprofessional mistakes by James contributed to the failed system including the bad flow rate of our gas control valve, the oversized burner, the incorrect orifice, and the pilot extinguishing. Since we will never have enough gas flowing for size of the burner James installed, we will always experience a limited, yellow flame and output unless we change the basically new burner. Now Plumbing customized exactly what was needed with a written 5 year worry free warranty on parts and labor. Not bad considering how James treated us. They were expensive, but hopefully worth it. I called Fire by James, because I had an outdoor fireplace that needed to have a burner hooked up along with a couple other little things. When I initially reached out for an appointment I was told it would be two weeks before they could come out, and that Mae me think that he is good at what is does with such a demand. Someone from the company came out for the scheduled appointment, looked at the fireplace, and said that they would give me a quote. It has now been a month, and I have not heard from the company or seen any kind of estimate. I am very surprised since I read the reviews on Yelp before reaching out to them. We consider ourselves very blessed to have found Fire by James. We recently had major gas leaks in our home which was built in 1999. I would encourage everyone with a home of that vintage to contact them for a complete check up. Southwest Gas told us we were very lucky that our house did not explode!.
