We really love this place. I think they opened last year and we were there the first time on a day I think they were getting ready to close for the evening. Back then they had great service and great food. This time we were hungry for a good salad but we had the "ho hums" where we know exactly how every salad in town tastes and we wanted something different. We sat outside. Went to the Under New Management Firewood Bar & Grill on Grand River in Howell, Mi. FANTASTIC!!! The food was out of this world! I have a food allergy and the Chef (Tom) came out of the kitchen and went over the whole menu with me! Who does that?! Chef Tom does. It was wonderful to have Calamari that was wonderfully tender and delicious! For dinner I had Chicken Picatta and husband had Stuffed Cabbage, both were out of this world! Give the new place a try! The bartender who also took our order was very professional. He made our dining experience pleasant. We had not tried Firewood Grill which is one of the newer establishments in Howell. I had previewed the menu before we went so I was prepared that it was a moderate ti high priced restaurant. They had an extensive menu and consisting of appetizers, burgers, and lunch items, comfort food and of course dinners. They also had a decent size dessert menu, a large wine list and a full bar. My dining companion ordered a Shirley Temple And I was surprised when it ended up being "bottomless". Tim make sure that he brought refills without even being asked. I ordered a Mojito end it was good. Most people probably would appreciated the amount of alcohol in it. It kind of overwhelmed the drink for me.Tim kept a good eye on us but was not intrusive at all. We decided to go ahead and have a late lunch from the dinner menu so that we would only need a snack if anything later in the evening. We did not indulge in an appetizer because the dinners all came with soup, salad, or coleslaw. My dining partner chose the New York strip steak which was a $22 item. It came with a baked potato which was readily substituted for hand cut french fries. It was ordered medium. When it arrived it was cooked properly. I was very disappointed that my dining partner only ate about a third of it. He complained that it had areas of gristle in it. He also opted for salad with ranch dressing. For my dinner I chose the Stuffed Cabbage. It seems that it is more of a northern dish as I have rarely found it on menus in Texas. My mom made delicious (galumpkis) having gotten a recipe from one of our neighbors who happened to be polish and having the knack in the patience to par boil the cabbage, make the meat and rice mixture, also a semi sweet beautiful tomato sauce and being able to roll them fitting about 40 in a large roasting pan. Anyway I consider them comfort food and was very excited to try them. They were served with mashed potatoes and I chose a salad as well with bleu cheese dressing. I'm not sure if my dressing was homemade or not but it sure was good. In fact it ended up being the best and most tasty part of my meal. The salad was fresh with Romain lettuce and some mixed greens, Shredded carrot, several grape tomatoes, cucumber and shredded cheddar cheese. It wasn't too small and it wasn't too large. The dinner came with two stuffed cabbages. The meat and rice were cooked properly and the cabbage was softened the way it is supposed to be. The problem was they were fairly tasteless and the sauce didn't help either- as it was a light red in color but I really didn't taste any tomato in it. Probably the most disappointing thing is that my mashed potatoes were instant. I ate my salad and one of the stuffed cabbages. I also need to mention that right after we sat down and we're thinking about what we wanted to drink we were asked if we would like a bread basket and some nice warm focaccia was brought out along with pats of butter. It was very good. We never made it to desert as both of us were full before we even finished our meal. I would love to see them inject more flavor into their food. Maybe even something as simple as salt and pepper would enhance the taste. I will likely try it again and try something different to see how read more

I don't understand the negative reviews. I moved to Michigan 18 months ago from the San Francisco Bay Area, a foodie area with tons of good, great and fine dining. Everything I've had here has been great. I'd go as far as to say Firewood Grill is the best kept secret in Howell. A highly under-rated restaurant. We've got Brighton Bar & Grill to the East, Tavern 109 to the West and Firewood Grill smack-dab in the middle. I love it. Great food, service and with a great bartender. Shanna's the best! read more

Here is hoping it was just an off night. Been in before and it was quite good. Unfortunately I suggested this place for dinner with 4 of my friends. The service was really slow, but pleasant . 3 of the six meals were awful. I ordered the salmon which was over cooked and so was another. Each came with mashed potatoes which were warm at best, maybe yesterday's. All in all not a good choice. My bill for myself and wife with tip was $90. Unusually busy and I believe we had to wait because they like many other establishments cannot find many people who want to work for a living these days. The host was a young boy and the first thing we both noticed about him was how he was going to town chewing his gum. Not something I would recommend for the first point of contact for the business. The staff was scurrying about trying to keep up with the influx of patrons. Sad to see how those who want to work seem to be stressed because of the additional tasks they now need to take on. First visit here and it was just amazing!! Our new favorite place to go with family and friends. Great interior and very pleasing ambiance!! We had a party of 8 and were seated quite quickly on a Saturday. Drink specials could be better priced but it is a Saturday and their money making day so no worries there. Service? Bad,bad,and bad. Went for dinner last night (Thursday)about 6:00. Seated right away,waited and waited probably 15 minutes still no one greeted us. Finally asked a busgirl for a server. She went to the bar and finally someone came over, took drink orders,left .......10minutes later she's back to say they are out of the wine I ordered. I chose another and off she went. Brought me my wine and stated they had a wedding party that just placed their food orders so she couldn't take our orders for a while. Do not eat here! Garbage food. Tastes like shit. Literally. Manager came to our table and disrespected our entire table in front of our two children. Threw our money on the floor... told us to get out just because we sent our dishes back for tasting sour. The sea food pasta tasted like sour milk with noodles and hard shrimp, uncooked mussels and scallops. The chicken parm is a pasta that used thin chicken cutlets with nasty heavy bread also tasted sour. The clam chowder tasted sour. The only thing "ok" was our sons grilled cheese that also could have been made better by himself than this place. We were even charged $4 for coleslaw we didn't even get. Do not waste your time. Nothing but good things to say about the Firewood Grill! My friend and I stopped today for the first time and we will be back again! The bread and butter to start our meal was absolutely fantastic! We asked for an extra serving of bread. The menu is extensive. They have plenty of appetizers, sandwiches, salads, soups, entrees and specials for any type of interest. My friend had the Cobb salad which was a nice selection of chicken, tomatoes, avocados, cheese, bacon and lettuces. She had it topped with honey mustard dressing and said it was great. I wasn't overly hungry so I just had a bowl of their soup of the day... tortellini. It was fantastic. Much like a minestrone, but with tortellini. The bowl was filling and delicious! They offer a full bar. The Pinot Grigio was fantastic and my friend enjoyed her Moscow Mule. The service was fantastic. I'm looking forward to visiting again! read more

We have been twice now and both times it's been great. We love the New England Clam chowder as well as the coleslaw. Lamb Tips and artichoke spinach cheese dip appetizers are great. Perch, walleye, coconut shrimp and seafood pasta are great entrées. Their mashed potatoes are to die for. Service has been very good, place is clean and everyone very nice. This rating reflects the fact Firewood Grill (FG) was not open as advertised, not our dining experience which has been good in the past. We stopped by FG on January 10, 2022 about 11:30 AM and were disappointed that FG was not open, despite our visit being after the restaurant's posted opening time and no indication on either Yelp or FG's website of closure - either temporary or permanent. While in the parking lot, we called the restaurant, thinking perhaps they have revised hours of operation; there was no answer and we were unable to leave a message because the mailbox was full. We were disappointed as we had been looking forward to a return visit. We understand this is a difficult time for many restaurants and were hoping to support FG. We suggest that FG update its website to post current hours of operation and update the outgoing voice message associated with the restaurant's phone number. read more

Amazing service and food! Tried it on a whim during Melon Festival and loved it! Ordered the filet tips as an appetizer and the melted in our mouth. My wife and I then shared the stuffed cabbage and a chicken piccata. The piccata was tender and good if maybe even a little too lemony, but the star of the show was the stuffed cabbage. Our server told us the owner stuffs them himself and you can taste the love! Light, airy, and delicious with an amazing tomato "gravy" over the top. Never had them before, they blew our minds and it's our new favorite thing. Going back one week later to have more. We can't stop talking about them. The food was excellent but the restaurant is dirty. The ledge along all of the booths was so dusty dirty that I had to be sure my granddaughter didn't touch it. I looked at the floor it didn't look like it was swept, vacuumed or mopped in a week. Several booths needing the seats replaced the padding is worn out and uncomfortable to sit on. You can feel the boards. So excellent food but if the restaurant is dirty then how is the kitchen maintained. My Husband and I stopped by at 6:30 for dinner and the place was packed! Ever single seat was taken and the staff was working their butts off! It made a great impression seeing everyone working so well together! Our waitress was prompt and pleasant to work with too! More importantly the food was to die for! No longer the place it used to be. Ate there last week, mid-afternoon. Service from the gal who served as bartender, waitress, hostess, etc. (the only one up front apparently) was very friendly, however the food is suffering and management needs to intercede on some basic protocols. A) Salads brought before appetizer, even though we ordered apps first and then waited to order. B) Appetizer/Nachos tasted like fish though only beans and cheese on top...inedible. C) Food was overcooked, chicken parm was burnt and tasted "wrong", fish was OK but sparse. D) We ordered cocktails off the menu and they "could not be made" as the ingredients weren't available (so why have them on the drinks menu?). While we sat in our booth, a woman cleaned around us - spraying obnoxious smelling disinfectant on the tables to clean...while I appreciate the clean, the smell made dinner even more unappetizing. Bathroom was also not quite clean and with so few customers in the restaurant at the time, inexcusable. We've eaten here often over the years, sometimes OK, sometimes better - but continually going downhill so I think we're done. read more

My daughter had her wedding dress tailored in Howell, and neither of us knew the local restaurants. So we took a chance from advice from Yelp and stopped for a quick bite to eat at the Firewood. It fit the bill. My daughter is gluten free (medically), so we took a chance that this place would have on-site-made food (and an ingredients list). The interior is nice and seemed clean, but it was a bit dark and dated. We were quickly greeted by friendly staff. We ordered a couple of appetizers for fun, and they were able to make a few changes so that my daughter could indulge. It was awesome that there were no eye rolls or dirty looks. Our server was terrific and acted as if it was a great culinary idea. So she made us comfortable, as well! We ordered the spinach artichoke dip, with chips not pita. It was really nice and creamy. Then we had lamb tips, which were devine! We especially loved the garlic dip that came with it. Of course, Abbie had to have French fries, which were delicious. We decided to treat ourselves and asked for a gluten free desert. Our server checked and discovered that the lemon creme brulee with blueberries was GF - and it was delicious! After seeing the chef on the news we decided to make the Britt trek to Howell to have dinner at Firewood grill. Upon arrival I was a little concerned because the exterior of the restaurant looks like it's a Denny's. I said to myself, oh no, I hope this wasn't a mistake. But that's where my concerns ended. Walking inside the interior is updated and modern. This restaurant was clearly a diner or something of that sort in its former life but they've done a nice job inside making it look more upscale and sleek. For dinner we opted for the chicken piccata and the BBQ pork tips. Both came with sides and either soup or salad. All of the food was absolutely delicious. I love that they make everything from scratch and use fresh local ingredients from local farmers and their chicken is free range. Lastly we shared their famous homemade cheesecake that is such a secret that the owners wife makes it at home daily! It was outstanding. The portion was huge, the two of shared and still couldn't finish it! It was topped with a raspberry sauce and fresh blueberries and strawberries. This was a great trip and an outstanding meal. My husband had the supreme firewood burger. The canned beets were on the verge of spoiling, the cukes had been sliced the night before, very dry & kinda hard on the outside from being out all night The cherry tomatoes were sunk in & very sad looking. Good gosh the ?garlic dip? not really able to identify it & the hummus were very bitter tasting.
