Came with my family on a Friday night and had a wonderful time! We showed up a little early and missed the live music, but with our toddler at the table, we wouldn't have lasted too much longer. Service was great and food came out very timely. I ordered the short rib burrito which was very rich in flavor coming mainly from the meat, but the meal overall was lacking for $20. For a $20 burrito, the presentation and size was underwhelming. Would have loved to see a chipotle sauce, Guac, pico, or something on the side other than shredded lettuce and some Mexican rice. My friends and I stopped here for a late lunch on the way back to Grand Rapids after shopping at IKEA all day. It was a pretty easy stop off the highway, and despite some construction in town we found parking pretty easily. It was pretty empty when we arrived, but by the time we were paying our checks it was very full with the early dinner crowd. Service was quick (maybe even a little rushed), my beer was nice and cold, and they have a pretty big menu. Seems like anyone could find something they like. I was actually torn between 3 or 4 different things, but settled on the Carl's Club sandwich. It comes with a side of tortilla chips and salsa. The chips were decent; not too oily, but tasted like they came out of a big bag (a little stale) though the menu says they are housemade. The salsa was pretty watery, so I didn't really eat it. The sandwich was good! A very generous amount of turkey, and I liked it on the 9 grain bread. My friend got the Lu and Carl's Salad that also looked really good. Overall, I'd say it was good, not great, but I would go again. Similar to another reviewer I debated between 3 and 4 stars, and since there wasn't really anything wrong I'm going with 4. I might end up bringing my husband here in a few weeks, since we need to go back to IKEA and this was a nice, easy spot to get to. This is the most misleading restaurant I've ever been to. I went online and ordered myself the prime rib sandwich for lunch that was listed at $17.99. She asked what side I'd like with that as if it was included and one of the options she listed was a side of fries and I went with that. Now I thought this was a little pricy already but when I arrived they try to charge me $26 for it! I asked what the difference was because it was listed at $17.99 online and she tried to tell me it was due to sales tax. I told her sales tax in Michigan is 6% not 50%. She then looked at it again and said it was due to it being listed incorrectly online at $17.99 it actually was $18.99. I told her that still didn't make up the difference $8 they were trying to charge me as that only accounted for about $2 of it. She then said they had a 1% "carry out fee" I again explained 1% would only be about 18 cents that didn't make sense either. She then said the carry out fee was actually $3 (more than most places charge for DELIVERY!). I inquired what the carry out fee was and she said it was to cover the cost of the Styrofoam boxes and plasticware which makes no sense because it cost nowhere near that amount. Even with all of these bogus charges that made me feel like I was looking at my cell phone bill the numbers still were off. She then explained the remaining difference was due to my side order of french fries which they told me over the phone were included in my meal! I told her I was told they were included and never asked for them myself and she made it seem like I was causing a huge hassle to have them removed at that point as I really didn't even want them to begin with. She pretty much just dismissed valid my concerns as irrational and petty. It's sad that we are at a place where there's this many hidden charges in even buying food. We just saw where events/sports ticket website were forced to disclose the total cost to consumers because of all their hidden junk fees but it's amazing we are getting to a place where even ordering food from a restaurant is now being riddled with junk hidden fees. We may actually have to get to a place where a law is passed for transparency in food prices. If you list an item at $17.99 on your website you shouldn't be charging people more when they show up to pick it up. read more

We had a party of 8 and did not have a very long wait for dinner on a Friday night (granted we ate around 5:30 PM so the dinner rush was just beginning). I ordered the black and blue burger and thought that it was delicious, although I found it odd that the default side was salsa and chips. Looking for a Dog Friendly restaurant in downtown Brighton that serves good food than Lu and Carl's could be the ticket for you. We stopped in here with our pooch and were welcomed with smiles and a bowl of water for our dog. Really love this concept as Brighton business district is really a pedestrian/walkers dream in that it is packed with good restaurants and Bars and is a great place to take a walk with Fido and get a meal/drink at the same time, also known as a two'fer! Doggies aside, the food here is good and service is prompt and very friendly. On this particular occasion we had a burger with fries, Chicken taco's, Short rib burrito and chicken fingers with fries. All the food was tasty and well cooked and a not a single person in our party of four was disappointed with their food. The environment is casual here with both indoor an outside dining and doggie wall of fame (Picture of patrons dogs hung all over inside the restaurant) is not to be missed. Came here on the way to the airport from up north. Super fun atmosphere, the food was great, and everything was reasonably priced. I got the Carl club with a mimosa. The turkey on that club was the real deal!!! Carved turkey, not just deli meat. The chips and salsa that come with the meal are fresh, definitely not bagged chips and Pace. It was okay, but probably could be better. I'm on the fence about giving them between 3 and 4 stars, but I'm feeling generous, so here you go, it's a 4. First of all, the bar wrapping around the entire center of the small location, taking up a large percentage of the floor space and footage is ridiculous. I grew up in Brighton and I know what this place used to look like and what type of eateries were in it before and my wife used to work in Brighton and she said the same thing- the huge sports bar concept does not fit in. The bar is awkward. It doesn't look right and there's no floor space or room. It looks dated. As for the ambiance, it is a hodgepodge of casual meets sports bar meets bistro. It's a mess. The restaurant was clean, but looked dated, messy and lacking any real sense of design. It looks like too many concepts and nothing gels. It is not the ideal location for a sports bar, if that's the theme they desired. The huge bar meant all the tables were too way too tight and small and if you had many dishes or a few drinks that weren't cleaned up immediately, you'd be cramped for space. As for the service and food, it was fine. The service was super slow, with one lone waitress working every table. The bartender at the bar was largely not busy and no one was at the bar, nor was the bartender (or whoever she was that was tending to the actual bar) busy at all- in fact, she was largely on her phone or watching one of the multiple TV's overhead while not helping out elsewhere. Our waitress kept apologizing to each table and I felt kinda bad for her. She seemed pretty nice and did try to get everything out to the tables on time. My sandwich was good, not great, but hearty and I liked the chips and my wife's "homemade" mac and cheese dish was alright, yet was skimpy and lacked seasoning. The beer options were okay, nothing super interesting. The prices were on par with the neighborhood and the food and drink options were pretty decent, and very on point with the local restaurant options nearby. Overall, I'd maybe pop in for a drink and a quick appetizer if I was in town again, but that's about it. read more

We stopped in with the kids on a hot afternoon and had a great lunch. As a party of seven, we were seated right away. Our server- Katie- was awesome. Super nice and efficient. We had a variety of food. The taco salad was delicious as were the southwest egg rolls. The hot dog was way too big for our child, but we cut it up and made it work. Visited tonight for dinner. It was busy but we got fast service. Reliable food and really tasty. One of our favorite bars in Brighton.

We ventured into downtown Brighton just before Christmas for a festive meal, and Lu and Carl's had the perfect atmosphere. Lots of lights, decorations, just a fun place for the evening. It was nearly full at 5:40 pm. When we arrived, there was an intoxicated patron near the entrance who had apparently been asked to leave and wasn't too happy about it. He kept wandering back in and out of the restaurant, yelling aggressively at two young ladies who appeared to be a server and manager. Eventually they had to lock the door to prevent him from coming back in to yell. We were seated at a table for five, and our server was none other than the poor girl who was being verbally assaulted at the door. She was an absolute champ. A pro. Sure, there were some hiccups during the meal. If I had just been verbally assaulted, I would have had trouble focusing too. But the entire staff handled those issues seamlessly with genuine care and concern. Her name is Katie, by the way. So if you go to Lu and Carl's, be sure to ask for Katie. Shes excellent. read more

Four of us stopped here on the way back home from Frankenmuth and really enjoyed our visit. We started with the spinach dip appetizer and have to say the fresh chips really made this delicious. We all got sandwiches and fries and as many people have mentioned the fries are delicious, perfectly crispy and a decent serving with the sandwiches. I had the patty melt and it was huge, a good sandwich to get if you want to have leftovers. A friend ordered the blue cheese burger and it had lots of fresh blue cheese on it, he loved it. This is definitely a place I would go back to for a good casual meal in a fun setting. If you're a dog lover bring a picture of your pooch in a wooden frame and they will hang it on the wall. My only small criticism is the ripped upholstery in some of the booths, it looks really bad and doesn't make a good first impression. read more

We enjoyed sitting outside for our meal. Went back a second time and ate inside. Nice, casual dining with a nice size bar. High top and regular tables available. I really like sitting in the window seats and looking at all the cars and people walking by. Pricing is average. Parking can be challenging depending on when you go. Food was average bar food. Came here after we missed last call for food at a neighboring establishment. I ordered a french dip and my wife ordered chicken fingers & fries. Both were mediocre, though my wife said her fries were actually very good. The beef on my french dip was dry, and the jus for dipping was extremely salty. Beer selection is modest, with three or four crafts on tap. I will say the guy in the corner playing guitar was quite good, though if we hadn't been seated next to him we might not have heard him. Noise level was quite high. Service was OK. We weren't kept waiting for anything and the server was pleasant. I've had worse, but L&C's wouldn't be my first choice if I found myself hungry in Brighton again. read more

I seem to remember liking Lu & Carl's more the first few times I went. My husband, daughter and I went back a few weeks ago because I remembered really liking their flats sandwiches. They were still okay, but nothing to really rave about. It wasn't crowded when we were there, but there were some crumbs and stuff on the floor, and only a few people seemed to be working. Maybe it was because it was just a weekend lunch time, but I would think if it wasn't crowded, there should be time to keep it clean. The waitress was very friendly with our daughter (which is always appreciated by me). Our daughter really enjoyed her macaroni and cheese and 'Scooby Snacks' graham crackers for dessert. My favorite thing at Lu & Carl's is all the dog pictures on the walls. The restaurant is actually named after the owners' dogs. My dog is the one in the green and white sweater. Be forewarned, this review is based on brunch. I had the egg's benedict that was a twist on the traditional and came with a sausage patty and some red pepper (as pictured). The meal was great value and the place is quite divey/sports bar-ish so I wasn't expecting anything amazing but it was actually pretty good. They also have a bloody mary bar that is well stocked but comes at a $12 price tag. We had no problem getting a seat for Sunday brunch at around 11:30. Lots of flying insects indoors and inattentive staff. We have been here many times to drink, this was our first time stopping by to eat. It was maybe one of the last nice days in the fall. I couldn't even get out my app order before lifting my head and seeing she was already gone. When we did see her, she was just sitting at a table and playing on her phone. The food was good, We started with the Cajun Steak Bites. Although the steak was good, they weren't Cajun at all. Maybe somebody once complained of them being too spicy and now they cant really make them Cajun? That's just what I assumed. The entrees were filling. I got their Black & Bleu burger with fries. It was a good burger, and the fries were even better! My girlfriend got an Avocado Tangerine salad and it was pretty big. There was certainly a lot of food with both of our orders. As far as the food review goes, the steak bites could've been better. Every restaurant in the area offers steak bites, so you really have to have something good to be able to compete. I understand after the pandemic it is hard to find staff, but it cannot be hard to enforce simple business policies. Policies such as no phone use on front of house floor, or even no sitting at the tables during working hours, is nothing unheard of. With the location of this place and the business I see it get, I guess we were just expecting better. read more

First things first: The food was good. Everyone at my table enjoyed their meals. HOWEVER. The service here is GOD AWFUL. Firstly, there was no hostess, so we didn't know whether we should seat ourselves or just stand and wait so we chose waiting. After 5 minutes or so of servers walking past us and not saying anything, a girl comes over and tells us we can sit wherever we like. Alright, cool. We sit for another few minutes before we are even greeted. Our server was really nice and got our drinks pretty fast. We put in our order and the food comes out. After she drops it off, she tells us they're doing shift change and so we are going to be transferred to another server. Firstly, what restaurant does that? Secondly, she's the one who did the work and I really wanted her to get the tip. But, I digress. So, we never see a server again. NOT ONCE. Nobody came to ask how the food was or if everything looked correct (thankfully it did or we would have sat there for who knows how long waiting to get it fixed). Seriously, NOBODY came by our table and spoke a word to us. Finally, after we're all done eating, I went up to the bar hoping to at least get the bill so we could get out of there and I STILL GOT IGNORED BY THE BARTENDER because she was standing there texting and talking to the other servers. Wtf? Horrible. EVENTUALLY, another person in my party went up and asked for the check and she finally decided to acknowledge us and bring us our check.
