I recommend Firicano's to everyone in Boston. This is a great North End family business that has a real barbershop vibe. I have been going to Mark for years. He and Rich both are fun and friendly and do a great job. The shop itself is a comfortable place to hang out while you wait, except now during COVID. Right now it's by appointment per ordinance. But getting an appointment is quick and easy. I'm looking forward to watching sports while I wait again soon! Easy to walk over from the City Hall area and you can get there by the T to Haymarket. And after your haircut you can get lunch or a quick espresso in the neighborhood. Great place to spend a little time during the day. I live in Jamaica Plain and it's the only barbershop I go to. I visited Firicano's after a run-in with a different North End barbershop which left me with an unsatisfying, too-quickly done hack job. They don't even touch the level of quality or customer service that I experienced here. Not only did Mr. Firicano correct the mistakes (which were many) that were inflicted upon me by that other barbershop, but he provided the attention and customer service that one expects when one stops into a place of business. I ended up with a much shorter, but much better looking cut than I thought possible. My hair is getting a little long now, and I'm looking forward to returning to Firicano's for another great cut. For reference, the cut I got was: Fade up from the bottom a 0-3, and then a little left on the top that I was able to part with a comb and style to my liking. read more

I've tried every high-rated haircut place in the North End and Financial District, and Firicano's is by far the best. Don't even think about going to Boston Barber & Tattoo- those guys are jerks and give you whatever haircut they want. Rich (owner) at Firicano's listens to you and gives you a professional haircut you can be proud to show off. My cut: Fade the sides and back from a #1 to a #2, cut the top a #4, blend it in. Great value for your money. A inexpensive $14 cut that I always round up to $20 (with hair, a solid tip is money that pays dividends) that doesn't look cheap. I've been here 4 times and always happy. Always a lone barber. I don't know his name, which tells you that he's not gonna instantly become your BFF. Though, he politely and intelligently volleys back my comments regarding baseball, football, etc. Some observations that you may consider pluses or minuses: Little small chit chat No appointments and often a small wait...it IS a barber shop after all. No wash before cuts (there's a sink, but I've never seen it used) You'll be hard press to improve on this place. read more

Honestly, my north end friend rave about this place for years and now that I live in the area, I swung in here when the time was right for a cut. I'm not sure what all the hype is about? Came here at 4:15 on a weds, got a seat, no problem. He (I guess it was Rich after reading other reviews) asked what I wanted and it was like I was speaking Greek. Maybe if I spoke Italian it would have been better, but I legit got an 8 min piss poor haircut. I had to go home and do touch ups myself in the mirror around my ears- it was so poor. I asked for a professional looking cut, where I can get out of the shower, not run a comb through it and look fine. I told him that in the summer, I usually do a #2 on the side with a fade #3 on top...didn't really get that, I just got a messy lack luster quick cut... Overall, I was very disappointed with my cut, so much so that I'm writing about my experience here. I'm not going to come back here, not worth my time or my money. After several years of random haircuts at chains whenever my girlfriend happened to be getting her hair done I decided I was sick of mediocre cuts like the one in my profile photo and went searching for a real barbershop. I settled on Firicano's thanks to Yelp and it's become one of my favorite barbershops over the past year. Whether it's the day before an event, job interviews or back to school (I'm a teacher) Firicano's quickly became my go to spot. Hell, I got my hair cleaned up here on my wedding day. Mostly gotten my shaves and cuts from Sal, I think I only had Rick once (that'd be the wedding haircut), and each time I step out of the shop with great hair for next to nothing ($16, come on). And if you've never had a real shave with hot lather and a straight razor you owe it to yourself to get one done. Sal's a master with the razor and the extra minutes and 12 bucks you spend on the shave feel like a goddamn spa weekend away. read more

I stumbled across Firicano's back when I lived in the North End about four years ago. Fast forward to today, and I still make the trek despite living in a completely different neighborhood. What more could you ask for from a barber? - Both Rich and Sal give consistently good haircuts. And if you've never had a hot shave, get one. Nothing like it. - There's no appointment necessary. - The place FEELS like an old school barber, only with the modern update of ESPN playing on flat screens. - The coffee, sambuca, and donuts are a nice touch. - $16 for a haircut? Can't beat that. I didn't even bat an eye when the price went up a few buck few years ago. My only issue with Firicano's is that it's cash only, but it's a minor thing. I've been living in the North End for going on 4 years now. I've tried several of the barber shops in the neighbor hood. I've found them either to be too expensive or have a constant long wait. Firicano's is $16 for a cut ($20 bill with tip and you're all set). Sal (the bald guy) is a 3rd generation barber who is quick and efficient. Rich (the owner) also does a great job. You can gab with them a little bit, but if you just want to get a quality mens cut and get in and out, this is the place to go. You've got TV's on sports or news, great, recent magazines, and free coffee. The place is great and I'll never go to another North End Barber as long as I live in the area. read more

Awesome hot shave!! Never had one before and went with a 2-month scruffy beard. Lather, hot towel, great shave, cool towel - fast and super-smooth and only $12! No nicks or cuts. It was his birthday and I didn't know what else to get him, so I got him a good haircut and a shave. He loved it. My mom keeps saying it's the best haircut he's ever gotten. So there you go. It was quick. It was cheap. But I'm pretty sure he made a judgement as soon as he saw me, and the cut itself wasn't anything to write home about. For example, my sideburns are uneven for one....no worries, will fix it when I go home, but I'm def not making the trip back from Chinatown. I just got a haircut the other day and it was great. I used to go to State Street Barbers in the South End, and this place was an easy transition. Despite no offerings of a beer nor a jack hammer back rub found at State Street, $14 for a legit cut and straight razor shave is a terrific value. I've gone to this barbershop for 3 years and almost never got a haircut I wasn't satisfied with because the same two guys are always there. However, yesterday I went and there was a I sat down and said "2 on the sides and back and leave the top long, don't take too much off the top". My head now has basically the same length hair on the top and sides. He asked me what I thought and I told him he took too much off the top. He then said well I want you to come back so I'll give you this one for free. Really? Why would I go back? You had one job that I explicitly told you to do and completely failed. I paid him anyway and left. If you're going to get your haircut here wait and get the normal guy who has been there forever unless you want the wrong haircut. I now have a buzz cut thanks to the hack job I got by this guy. read more

This is my favorite barber shop that I've ever been to. These guys are true pros and give a great cut at a good price. It's definitely got that "local barbershop" feel with only two chairs and most patrons seeming to know the barbers on a first name basis, but I've felt super welcome as a newcomer and the guys are happy to let you enjoy your haircut in peace without the awkward small talk if that's what you're into. read more

Guys, you know you hear about how women love mani petties... well I think the straight edge shave is the man's version of the mani petti. I have had less than 5 barbers give me a straight edge shave in 34 years and Rich has been doing it for the past 10 years for me. Hot towel, massaging in the shaving cream and a steady hand. These guys cut a mean head of hair, but it's the little extra touches that make it primo. The shaving products they use are great. I had my first straight razor shave today, which was a nice "bro" version of a facial. If there's a line, don't worry because they work fast. Remember to bring cash.
