I've been coming to barbershop lounge for a few months now and honestly the quality is amazing. I've been to a few barbershops before but I don't think I'm ever changing again. Yes it is expensive but the quality and the service outweighs the price. Maleena is absolutely amazing. I love how she takes her time and she doesn't rush things at all. She makes sure before she sends me off that she got every piece of hair and makes sure that she got everything. Not only is she amazing but she's also very meticulous. She lets me choose the scent for the shaving cream which is amazing. And a complimentary drink is offered. Where do you get that service? I don't think anywhere. The place is beautiful and feels like a barbershop from the 90's which is killer. Whenever I go in there I know that I will look confident coming out and ready to tackle anything in life. While staying at a hotel in the area, I dropped in to have my head shaved. I expected the barber to use the straight razor, but he persuaded me that the electric shaver would be fine. Best walk-in barbershop experience of my life. Whenever I'm in Boston, I won't let anyone touch this lettuce except for Heather - she was fantastic... A real artisté with 14 years of experience. I checked into my appointment with two things. A mop and a creative directive - "Give me something elegant in the front and savage in the back, perhaps a modern mohawk." I checked out with a crisp cut which sparked an interesting draw at the following day's wedding. To my chuckle, one of the bridesmaids asked me if I curated art for a living. Nice enough place and barber (Bo) and the styling was good, but i left my beard trim + shave with quite a number of cuts on my neck. My friends and wife were horrified when they saw me and asked what had happened to me. I guess I'm a bit surprised - I somewhat rapidly and carelessly shave my own neck each week without any cuts. Gentlemen shaves by women in lingerie. Could you ask for more? Well, at least that's what the gigantor poster on the wall shows, and what a great poster it is! But seriously, for gentlemen only, this grooming establishment has a nice list of services from haircuts, facial/head grooming, shaves, hand/foot treatments (manicures and massage), and..... get this... a pool table and coffee bar to kick back in if you're just in the mood for hanging out. And to round everything up, a shoeshine service on the premises. It is located right next to Delucca's market, and right across Daisy's. I love this place. It oozes a slight element of sexiness, not just from the friendly staff, but also from the decor around the place that resonates the message "this is the way it SHOULD be for men." It reminds me of those places in London or New York that know how to pamper guys without feeling too...... foo foo. The female haircutters are from various salons in the city and surrounding towns, very easy on the eyes, give great service, and best yet, let you catch any game you need on the flatscreen TVs. The real challenge, was seeing how they handled my friend's 5 year-old son a couple days ago. I was impressed. Great job on the haircut by a very charming Rosa, they knew how to handle him, and they managed to keep him quiet. I observed the other gentlemen getting their haircuts and shaves, and they all seemed pretty satisfied. I went back today, and got my hair cut by Valeria, a very sweet girl from Brazil, who did an outstanding job considering this was our first appointment. During this, I also got convinced by another staff member, who I'll refer to as Uber Milf Michelle, to come back for an old fashioned shave..... how could I say no? I even went overboard and got a manicure. When it was over, I didn't have a lisp, and my hetero manhood was retained, and my fingers looked decent. As I went to pay the bill, I got coaxed into a shoe shine by Marvin, who delivered like Fedex. The only thing missing from this place that would make it perfect? Hugh Hefner's symbol in the corner. First off I'd like to state that Valeria is absolutely fantastic and even though this place is a bit pricey for a men's haircut, she truly does an amazing job. What prompted this review (I have been going to this barbershop for ~1yr) are their business practices. They recently updated their pricing (increasing men's haircuts with and without shampoo) by $5 or ~10%. They did so to both their existing and new clients. The problem I have is that they did this by simply having papers up at the font desk... THAT'S IT! There was no verbal communication to me as an existing/dedicated client when I got a haircut 2 weeks prior to this change going into effect. I then got a haircut a week ago, tipped as normal and then checked my receipt at home later going through my credit card statement and noticed my bill was higher than average. When I called and spoke to them, they stated that it was something they did to all their clients and that there was "literature" at the desk that I should have seen. They apologized that I "didn't notice" the information and that's all. Poor business practices to keep customers in a city that has plenty of options. Again, if you're gonna go to this place, go see Valeria. She's truly wonderful and a master at her craft. Unfortunately, neither her nor any employee that works there mentioned that I'd be charged more 10% more for future haircuts. Maybe it's my fault for not looking harder at all the papers at the desk when I check in/out... but I'm going to argue that most people don't think about reading paperwork when they go get a haircut. read more

My husband and I were enjoying a gorgeous day walking down Newbury street when this place caught my eye. I know my husband loves shaves so we walked to see if he could get one. The store was closing in about 30 minutes but they were able to squeeze him in. I love that they have a pool table and bar in the back. Though no one offered me a drink, I entertained myself playing pool. I'd occasionally peek over to see how my husband was doing. He looked very relaxed with hot towels on his face or with a blade against his chin. After he was done he came over and rubbed his cheek against mine. After frequenting the $20-30 barber range for many years, I was looking forward to receiving my first expensive beard trim. I could never quite get the look I wanted from my regular barber, so I figured I'd find a high-end shop with knowledgable stylists that could really up my beard game. Unfortunately, my beard is now gone. As is my mustache - I've never actually seen a mustache of this length outside of the military. I entered with a respectable beard and mustache that needed a small amount of edge-shaping and taming. I asked the stylist to straighten out the lines, and said I didn't want to lose any length. I left with about a half-inch off my mustache and an inch-and-a-half off my beard. We're talking about 1.5-2 months of growth, and now I've got a mustache that looks either military or early-80s pervert, depending on your perspective. Beyond the free bottle of water, the service isn't any different from your run-of-the-mill barbershop - they just charge 3x the price. This wouldn't be an issue for me if the styling was better, but it isn't. I wish I had seen the comment that Mark S. wrote on 1/28/18 before I had to learn the same lesson: "Do you like your beard? Don't go here. There's a difference between a trim and lopping off 85% of the length of a customer's beard." read more

Best place for men's cuts in Boston. Vibe is very old school sports bar but with a very modern take. There's a bar to wait at where they serve soft drinks (someday I hope they get a liquor license so I can sip on some scotch). Services are very extensive- I typically get a men's cut with a hot shave. Prices all reasonable. The highlight is my stylist, Maleena. She takes direction well and executes flawlessly. The level of detail and care that goes into every cut is impressive- down to this last little hairs that can look a bit mote perfect. I've been with Maleena for several years but have also had a few of the other stylists and can say that it is a very talented group. Manager only hires top tier talent. read more

Dan and his staff at Barbershop Lounge are truly the Best of Boston. I had cut my own hair for more than 15 years since freshman year in college, but in anticipation of my wedding in the Fall of 2019, I figured it was about time to find a barber/stylist to give me a proper cut. I started my search about a year in advance of the wedding, and I was not very happy with the first three barbers/stylists that I tried. Despite being from two other Boston and metro-Boston shops that are well rated and focus on male clientele, their cuts weren't all that great and they just didn't have the patience, the attention to detail, or the personal care to gain my trust. That's when I found Barbershop Lounge. When I first read Dan's bio on the shop's webpage, I knew he could be my guy - beyond his impressive training and teaching experience, it was the mention of his standard pre-cut "consultation and grooming discussion" and follow-up "recommendations for home care products and usage" that sold me. Cut 1 didn't disappoint. Before even picking up his shears, Dan took the time to listen to what I was looking for and to analyze my hair type and facial structure (as an engineer, this was right up my alley). Dan then confidently recommended a style, and I instantly trusted his expertise. The wedding was still 6 months out, but I was game-planning my subsequent pre-wedding cuts with Dan before I even left his chair. I've been a faithful client ever since that first cut. I couldn't even bring myself to "cheat" on Dan by cutting my own hair during the COVID work-from-home orders. Instead, I walked in to the shop last week with a mask and 5 solid months of growth. Not to fear - Dan took care of me. Despite small changes in shop protocol for the health, safety, and welfare of all staff and clients, the quality of the experience and the cut remain unchanged and unrivaled. A friend recommended the Barbershop Lounge for the haircuts and other services. My hair was rather shaggy, so I gave it a try. It was my first time there and I wasn't exactly sure of the location. I was a little behind schedule and a nice helpful voice called to give me better directions. When I arrived, the door opened for me by a very attractive blond girl. She escorted me to Rosa who was waiting to cut my hair. She was very pleasant and made sure she knew how I wanted my hair cut. I was there around noon and it was pretty slow, but it did look like the place would be fun to hang out if there was a wait with the pool tables and flat screens. During the haircut, something extraordinary happened that only me, one other guy and the staff got to experience. From the back door, "Big Papi", Mr. David Ortiz strolled in with the owners of the establishment. He walked by Rosa and me, said a wicked polite "Hello. How are you!?" I managed a "Um... hello, how are you?!" He was friendly to everyone there as you would expect. I only wished I pulled out my cell phone camera to document it. Went to the Barbershop lounge today for the first time. VERY nice place with awesome decor and atmosphere. I was escorted to the bar in the back by the receptionist, and given a nice cold bottle of Poland Spring water. I sat there watched some games for a few minutes while flipping through some of the various mens magazines laying around. I was then escorted into the Pedicure room by the nail/skin/waxing pro Stephanie. She was very easy on the eyes and wicked cool person to chat with! This was a very private and relaxing room with a leather heated massage chair, my own personal flat screen to watch whatever I desired, and I had my own end table to put everything on including drinks and magazines. Stephanie was magical and relaxing with my feet, real top notch! I then booked myself for a Maintenance trim. Velaria was the one who carried this out for me. Again very professional, easy on the eyes, and VERY good at what she does. Like I said I only wanted a maintenance trim, but Valeria said she couldn't stand the look of my do (it had been 3 weeks since my last cut) and since they weren't busy at that moment ended up giving me a whole head touch-up, and then rinsed/shampooed/conditioned/styled my hair for me! All for the original price. As I was leaving there were guys getting shaves, cuts, some nail treatments, playing pool, and hanging at the bar. This place is awesome and I highly recommend it for any guy who hates getting hacked by a barber, and doesn't enjoy the foo foo salons on Newbury. All thats missing is a smoking room and Humidor..........hint hint! read more

Maybe a haircut but just don't go there for a shave! My attendant had just had a cigarette so I got smoky hands and fingers all over my face. The wet towels were put on for only a few seconds as an arbitrary thing - not long enough to actually soften whiskers. Then out came the standard Gillette razor, albeit a vibrating one. If you want to part with money to get a shave no better than what you can do yourself then go here. I had missed patches, rash from where they'd scrubbed my face with the razor, just awful. read more

Went in for the first time today. Called ahed around lunch and got an appointment pretty quickly for right after. Receptionist on the phone was excellent and very friendly. Once there everything felt comfortable. The same person on the phone took my jacket and bag and sent me to the back. Somewhat of an awkward lounge because of the way the seating is arranged but, taking a seat at the bar, all was well. I sat for 5ish minutes (I was early) and was very nicely grabbed by Taffy. Taffy, such a dream stylist. Very nice, and walked me through each step making sure I was comfortable and liked what she was doing. As someone that often could not describe how he would like his hair, she understood pretty well and did a nice job lightening my thick hair while shaping it nicely. Did I mention she is beautiful? Almost makes it uncomfortable since I have terrible social skills. But, she makes it all good with her hair cutting magic. I typically think the clientele for this place may be a little more....shitty. I don't want to stereotype but I feel like juiceheads and asshats would love this place because of nice looking women cutting mens hair. I far from qualify for either stereotype but I must say I really enjoyed the nice talking and joking around with everyone. So, why 4 stars? I want consistency and can't say they provide that yet. So, I've had the chance to get my hair cut done in a lot of places, each with varying results. Barbershop Lounge falls into the "good" side of these varying results. Rosa did a great job with my hair. She listened to everything I said about my hair, and was able to come up with a great final product. Not only was the length just right, it was all manageable as well. It is a little pricey ($50 for the cut/shampoo, though I paid less on Groupon), so take that into account. The haircut was good but nothing out of the difference that I would get from my regular barber (which theyre skilled at their craft as well). Im not dissapointed with the service that I received, I just guess after this experience its not worth anymore than $25, including tip, for a mens haircut these days. Or the hype that Newbury St would bring for a rags to riches type hair cut/style. Maybe because I keep it basic and it grows out\ within 3 or so weeks I might not appreciate the style I was given as much.Nice staff, great atmosphere and a great cut. I will use this place as my back up (Work in the Back Bay, live in the South Shore). The only problem I guess I had with the place is it seems the ladies are not certified to use a straight edged blade as the one that was used on my neck had a staftey guard on it and did not feel the way my current barbers razor is or performs. All in all, nice place, nice haircut and good staff. If you have the money and you can commit yourself to the place, I would recommend the $495 for unlimited haircuts. I would also inquire about personalizing your own package as they were offering customized ones to fit individual needs. read more

She really made me feel right at home at the Barbershop Lounge, took the time to talk about the kind of style I wanted, and pitched a couple of hair styling suggestions that I hadn't considered, but thought they were great ideas. The haircut itself was amazing. I never know from one salon to the next if I'm gonna get my hair cut the way I like it, so with each new experience, it's always a bit of a gamble. This being my first time here, I didn't know what to expect. I am happy to say, however, that Barbershop Lounge is top-notch... and Valeria's a HUGE reason why this place is so awesome. I had so much fun speaking with her throughout my cut. She's a very sweet, charming lady who made me feel 100% at ease there. To see the finished product was so great, too, because I'd been needing a solid, professional cut and Valeria delivered in a way that very few could ever possibly top. I am giving two stars and it might seem mean. Its not. Men want and expect no challenges when getting a haircut. In and out is ideal, or maybe peruse a few cool magazines and in the chair and out in 20 minutes. This was different, really nice decor, a bit dark tho', things seemed to be jammed into this space that really aren't needed. RE: pool table's, coffee bar...maybe, shoe shine....meh. and all the fuss about this print of a barber chick flirting with an old man....meh. As far as the cut, it was fine, as good as my wife delivers. The only difference was; these ladies were less dressed than my wife. the neck shave was lame, my wife cleaned it up later in the week. IMHO: if they got rid of all the distractions in their shop and got 4 chairs and four barbers with skills, it would be worth the time & money I spent.
