I've been going here for my haircuts since 2017 as an out of state student. While I never really LOVED my haircuts here, I think that this is probably one of the better/affordable barbershops in the area. My experience today with Nelson was awful. I enter the barbershop, see he just seated somebody, and ask him if he's free after. He doesn't really say anything but just points at the chair. Then literally a minute later he gets a phone call and accepts an appointment saying "you can come in thirty minutes." I wouldn't call myself a mathematician but seeing that he just seated somebody and that I'm waiting, I think in thirty minutes I'd probably be in the chair. So I walk towards another barber and Nelson kinda yells across the barbershop Idk what he's doin! Anyway that wasn't even the unpleasant part. I asked for a really simple haircut.. a skin fade and a trim. I've had probably over 50 skinfades in my life and this one took so unnecessarily long. He kept hovering over my hair with the razors and barely making contact. I brushed this off as him trying to be detailed, though it felt incredibly annoying. He kept death gripping my ears down and he'd just take off my mask to cut off a side of hair but not put the mask back on. I had to hold my mask on at some point and he never put it back. My arm is full of cut hair as I type this. After what felt like eternity of people loud yelling across the room and very slow razor action in an extremely humid barbershop, he tells me to check out my cut. I had to ask him to let me see the back and when he showed me it, it was the most uneven shit I've ever seen. My back hair legit curved into a U shape with a mountain so I asked him to align the fade on the back with the sides.. I wonder what would've happened if I didn't ask for the back mirror. Fixing the back took another ten minutes and when I looked on my phone afterwards, I found that my sides aren't evenly cut... one side is puffy asf and the other is a bit slim. I also asked for a trim on the top and he somehow left it the same length but uneven. I've had many cuts here and around places in my life and I kept thinking to myself, "this is a terrible experience." The best place to get a haircut in the area with reasonable price. I was little hesitant to pay a visit to this one as many other barbershops near NEU area disappointed me. It's pretty tough for Asian guy to get a haircut in Boston. I got a fade cut from this place and got compliments from several people. Alex is the man. He is my favorite and only barber that I will allow to touch my hair. He remembers the ways my cut is unique and is always in a cheerful and humble mood. The shop itself is renovated with two large flat screen TVs and comfortable couches. The barbers have known each other a long time and love to have normal barber shop banter which is fun. In short, I have two long scars from razor burn on my temples after my cut today. While cleaning up the edges, my barber was moving the trimmer blade laterally instead of up and down, which seems like a pretty elementery mistake to make. I didn't have to wait, I liked the atmosphere of the shop, and the price was very reasonable, but I simply cannot forgive either the lack of care or training that would lead to injury during a simple haircut. read more

This is a fine establishment with veteran barbers. Be sure to make an appointment and make sure you know who you want cutting your hair because once you choose, it would be weird to start going to another person in the same shop. They all seem loyal to that fact. When I walked in not knowing the place and I asked for a specific barber, no one else tried to reel me in to their chair, instead they tried to text the person I was asking for, who wasn't there, so I went to Nelson instead. Turns out he was actually the guy I was looking for in the first place, I just had the wrong name. Nelson is the owner I believe. He's been cutting hair for awhile and he listened to EXACTLY what I wanted and hooked me up. I live in New York, but anytime I go to Boston, I go to Nelson. I got my first styled part from him and loved the look. If you are looking to get a fresh looking cut and and find yourself in Boston's South End area definitely go here and ask for Nelson. After several glowing recommendations, I finally decided to stop in to Cut N Edge on a whim for a haircut. What a really nicely appointed, CLASSY, Black barber shop. Tastefully decorated, beautiful art on the walls, nice music playing. This isn't your stereotypical barbershop- this is a top notch place. As a female, I'm always skeptical of trying new barbershops- are the guys in the shop going to be loud, talking a bunch of disrespectful yackity-yak about women, will there be blaring video games, the bootleg dvd salesman, and all that other stuff that typically comes with the neighborhood barber shop. Also, there is no shortage of women that come here to get their hair cut or their locs edged up. Nice! This is NOT that place. It's FABULOUS! Milq took care of me, and did a real nice job with my cut. Very, very nice guy, professional, and took his time to make me look GOOD. He even gave me a razor trim for my edges and sideburns- greatly appreciated! So you know how finding a new barber in a new town is like finding a church, a gym or a mate. The search can be exhausting because you've got to find just the right fit...the right nuance...AND... it is risky. One bad cut can last you six months. After looking in the mirror this AM I knew I was at the point of desperation. Something had to be done and I couldn't go another day. It was too hot to wear a hat. So I trolled Yelp and searched for black barbershops then looked for comments from women. A good male barber isn't the same as good female barber. Well today I hit the jackpot. Nelson! He has rave reviews on here as does his shop. I called him immediately and he gave me a same day appointment. When I walked in he was waiting for me. No lines!. The shop was beautiful and CLEAN The best part is Nelson took the time to listen to my concerns and anxieties about trying a new barber. He did exactly what I asked for and my hair looks great. This two-star rating is for the haircut. The barbershop itself is very nice, the men are professional and polite, and the barber who cut my hair is a cool and humble type of guy. But unfortunately, I wouldn't recommend the place to other women for a haircut. And I'd read pretty much all of the reviews before I went, I stopped by to talk to someone beforehand, I called ahead to ask if they could direct me to a person who is specifically skilled with womens' cuts, and then I even brought 5 different pictures with me for reference. I've also worn a tapered fade before so I knew how a good cut looks on me. I had a medium sized 'fro and I wanted them to take it all off and give me a nice, simple low cut with plenty of feminine detail (it was a VERY big deal for me). I stressed the fact that I did not want to come out looking like a boy. I came out looking like a boy. Toward the end, I had to finally just stop the whole thing and ask him to just line me up and I'd just pay him after that. When I left, I went to the nearest store and bought a hat, I was so embarrassed. I came home and wouldn't even let my roommate see it. Tomorrow morning I'm going to pick up a wig to wear until it grows out a little and I can do something to fix it. The last thing I'll say, in his defense, is that I don't think he's a bad barber, per say. That's the reason I'm keeping him anonymous. I just think that he didn't have the versatility to be able to do a nice cut for a lady. I trusted him with my hair and I just wished that he'd been honest about that. I'm quite possibly the whitest boy this barbershop has seen for quite some time, a fact that they made immediately but playfully clear to me, but then I just had to put up with some general ribbing for the rest of my time there--and the end result was well worth the teasing. Having recently quit my job and, around the same time, moved into the Mass Ave neighborhood, I started looking around for places that would give me some good ol fashioned fades and cat scratches, things I have been deprived of for over a year. While other, most flashy barbershops did not impress, Fabio at Cut N Edge was incredibly fast, neatened much more than I asked for, and just generally left me with a GREAT finished product, and in much less time than anyone else I'd been to . Until I found Cut N' Edge, I could not find a place in Boston that could get my haircut just right. Nelson really treats each one of his haircuts like a masterpiece -- he is a true artist. Music was pretty awesome, a mix of Latin and Hip Hop. My barber was Christmas (like the holiday), a friendly older man. The place wasn't chatty which was fine by me, you know us guys, we go in, get a cut, and we're out. I did show him a few photos of me with my previous hair-cut telling him that it was how I wanted it, the top was much shorter than I wanted, and also a bit on the thin side, maybe he's not used to handling asian hair yet. Awfully unprofessional haircuts, had the TV blaring full volume while the barber was watching the TV, yelling across the room to other barbers, and attempting to cut my hair over aggressively. From my experience with actual skilled hair stylists and barbers, I cannot believe that my barber used a razor on the top of my head while you would expect any barber to use scissors. He didn't even ask me what I wanted before he started to buzz away. The place looks nothing like what it does in the pictures that they try to make look professional and the supreme standard. I normally would not write this review because I believe they affect businesses poorly due to one person's perhaps biased point of view, but this business really deserves this one star. As a newcomer to Boston looking on Yelp for a place to get a good haircut, their 4.6 stars really fooled me. Getting haircuts has always seemed to much like russian roulette to me - sometimes they'd be great, sometimes I'd enjoy it, but sometimes I'd spend way too much money for something that I couldn't wait to grow out. First, two tips: 1. This place only accepts cash. I was lucky I had cash which I never usually do. 2. Beware, google maps will lead you to an alleyway behind the shop. The shop is actually on Mass Ave. This shop is as good as it gets for sure. Men's haircuts are $20, so not the one $ sign I had gone in there expecting. But you got what you paid for--very very nice ambience, the guys are super cool and well-dressed. It's a great atmosphere ; don't be deterred if you're not Black--I, along with many of the patrons am not, and had a great time. The shop is inviting and hip. Had a great experience. Heard about this place and thought of giving it a shot. Got an appointment with Alex who not only understood my requirement but also asked me before certain steps (very important - you don't want your hair to be cut super short beyond your req and then be asked if you want it shorter which is exactly what he said). After he was done, he asked if it was fine or if I wanted it a bit shorter and then cut it further on my demand without any problems. Great professionalism. I highly recommend this place if you want a decent hair cut in a respectable establishment with somewhat neighborhood barbers with professionalism. As a black Northeastern student, the location is ideal--although I didn't start going to this barbershop until my junior year--simply because it's tucked away I didn't know about it. The only reason I didn't rate it 5 stars is because unlike the barbershops here, my barbershop at home (Chicago) provides a real barbershop experience which includes: wash, sometimes a complementary shave--which is awesome. This is the place to go for great, stylish haircut. The prices are very reasonable, around $20 for a cut and beard grooming (great for a student's budget). Nelson cut my hair and he was awesome. He knew exactly what I was looking for, great taper on the sides, great work with clippers on the top for a messy Mohawk look, great work with the razor to edge it all up. Honestly the best haircut I've ever received. Nelson was very personable and easy to talk with. Had a very bad experience. I went in, everyone seemed busy. So I looked around, and was greeted by a middle aged guy wearing a red hat. Said his name was Ramone (not even sure of this; he mumbled a lot). I told him, specifically, that I needed a haircut and was looking for a new style. He nodded ok. So I sat down and he prepped me. Then, before I knew it, he started trimming my sides! I yelled at him to stop and asked what was going on. But, by that time, he had trimmed a significant portion off one side. When he stopped , he mumbled something like "don't worry, I make you look good!". I had no choice but to let him continue. In the end, he ended up giving me a decent haircut, but it was not at all what I wanted. In retrospect, maybe it was my fault for not asking for a stylist, or for not asking for the manager. However, if I say I want a new style, I expect the guy to at least talk me through it. I'd advice to ask for a stylist specifically. read more
