Shave and a Hair cut ... 24 bucks. 16 dollars for a hair cut, 8 bucks for a straight edge shave. Friendly service, great conversation and an old style barber shop with classical music in the back ground... priceless. Ok, enough lame hyperbole. CSqSS was a lot of fun. There's an espresso machine, and the barber even offers up some home made wine (I'll have to get a late appointment so I can try it sometime). The hair cut turned out pretty good, and really fast. The shave.. well thats quite a story: I'm half Indian Half Scottish, and on day ten of a beard growing contest I walked into a barber shop asking for a shave. The barber made fun of me most of the time, and really got a laugh out of the toughness of my stubble. As he used a clipper to shave off the beard... he had to keep shaking it out to keep it from dying. He accused me of trying to break his clipper. At the same time, he gave me an ok shave, but did it without a single nick. (I've cut myself with an electric razor, so this is an amazing feat). This makes me really want to go back. Found this place randomly a few years ago and have gone here exclusively since. Best barbershop around hands down, and reasonably priced.

My first visit went well. Made an appointment at 10AM on a Tuesday. Kevin was cutting my hair. I explained to my best ability what I was looking for. He did a great job. Relaxing and soothing atmosphere. Head massage was nice too. From the main entrance on 15 Court Square, walk past security desk. It is past the elevator on your right. From the PI alley way coming from Washington st, turn right when you see Archie's with Viga ahead. There is an entrance on left side to 15 Court Square. I've been going to Court Square for about 2 years and it's the highlight of my day each time I go. It's a cozy clubhouse complete with espresso, biscotti or cookies, Verdi or Puccini blasting through the speakers, pictures of the 80-year old Arthur with local Italian celebs, an electronic black/red shoe shining machine, and a good variety of magazines, including adult selections. I've exclusively gone with Arthur. and the first time I was a bit nervous, as Arthur is easily distracted with the music, the phone, his Keno numbers, and other patrons, all while holding sharp scissors or a straight razor in his shaky hand. Though, I've learned to trust him not only with the sharp instruments, but also with giving me a great haircut. My hair gets thick and if it's cut too short, will stick straight up. Arthur knows the perfect length to make it look cleaned up, but not stuck up. He will spend a good 30 minutes on each cut, sometime a bit longer. Arthur is a perfectionist and will not hesitate to break out the scissors or trimmer to touch up a spot even after he's removed the gown and neck paper and powdered your neck. He'll wrap you back up and take care of business. And, for his 80-year old hands, he gives a vigorous scalp massage, all while he belts out an opera line terribly out of tune. It's part of the charm of the place. So is the fact that each time I have to tell Arthur my sideburns are an uneven length. Arthur's good-natured response? "That's my calling card! How else will people know I cut your hair?" Then he fixes it. That has happened every month for 2 years. Also charming? Arthur has a soft heart for the VFW folks down the street, and I've seen him dole out some money, let them eat some of the snacks and just let them chill in the waiting area. No harm, no foul. And I can't fail to mention how invigorating it is to get a hot-lathered straight-razor cut under my sideburns, behind my ears and on my neck. A hot towel cleans off the lather and then Arthur applies a neutral-smelling and refreshing elixir. I walk out of there feeling like a new man. 1/7/16: I learned of Arthur's passing. I love this barber shop and I don't even get my hair cut here. They did a great job on my boyfriend's hair and they even offered me some wine or espresso while I waited. I took the wine. Come after 5 though, because I don't think they start barber shop happy hour any earlier. They have an extensive magazine collection (including the non-PG stuff) and they have pretzels in the waiting area. read more

The place was somewhat difficult to find, but it's definitely worth it! It's one of the few haircuts that I've come away with that I really liked. Not everyday you walk away feeling like that. The barbers were really friendly, and despite a short wait, I was getting a quality cut. I loved the fact that they briefly massaged your head and neck. That was unexpected, but really relaxing. The attention to detail that the barber gave me was amazing. I half expected a dozen times that he was done, but he would just stand back, grab his scissors again, and go right back to cleaning up my hair. One of the best cuts I've had, and I expect to go back. Other perks are classical music, older barber singing along with the tunes, cozy quarters. Downsides...some dirty magazines. The guys here are nice enough, and it wasn't tough to get an appointment. That said, they do the same thing here that they do at 90% of other old-school barber shops: you ask them to cut your hair a certain way, and they just do whatever they want. In this case, it means that I asked for it "a little shorter on the top", and walked out of their with a high and tight, looking like I was going into the Marines. read more

I used to hate going to the barber. I don't anymore. This is place is great. They spend a full 1/2 hour cutting your hair, which means they do a careful job. Results are completely consistent each time. They clean up with a straight razor, so you look nice and professional coming out of there. This is neither beauty salon, nor it is Supercuts, nor is it one of those places that gives you a half-assed ten minute haircut that looks bad. Perfect for guys who want a nice, neat cut that is office-appropriate. You will need to make an appointment, typically 1-2 days in advance. This works out well for me, because then I don't have to wait to be served. read more

Made an appointment for 11:30 am, was a bit late, got the weird eye...I'm sorry, first timer here. They said something in Albanian, and finally they decided, "hey we'll do a quick hair cut, 20 minutes or so, is that ok?" Of course that's alright, I don't do anything fancy anyways, just a #2 on the side, and leave the top short with a fade on the sides... Thanks... Doree, if I'm spelling his name correctly, did a great job. His attention to detail was SUPERB. My previous barber could do a sick fade, but couldn't do anything on the top. Decent fade, good top work, straight razor on the back neck, and a great price make it worth coming back to. Its $19 for a haircut, but I have him $30 for his hard work as I have interviews coming up soon. Gotta look sharp. I don't think there is a better barber shop in this price range. read more

I've been coming here for about 4 years since a breakup left me without someone to operate my clippers in the comfort of my own home. This is an old school barbershop doing old school work. You will not find TVs here. You will find free espresso at the beginning of every cut. You will find opera (and only opera) on the radio. I've only ever had my hair cut by Kevin who is the youngest barber there (about 26). You'll be entertained the old fashioned way, through conversation. Cuts used to be $16 but did go up to $19 which is still a good deal in the financial district if you ask me. read more

This place is old fashioned and simple, it doesn't look as chic as State Street, but I'm starting to think this is more the look and feel of a real old fashioned barbershop. After having gone back four times, this time with a bit more of a specific haircut, I can say this is the best barber shop I've been to. Kevin is my barber of choice, but from what I've seen Arthur and Jim aren't bad either. Kevin pays the most attention to detail to every aspect of the cut I've ever seen, and makes sure everything is exactly right before moving on. Add jazz music, espresso, and a straight razor shave to the back of the neck, and this is one of the best barbering experiences one can have, especially for only $16 plus tip. Old school barbering at its best. $20 ($16 plus $4 tip) puts you in a time machine. Don't come down if you're in a rush or want some fancy style. Stroll on in to shoot the shit, perhaps an espresso, read a vintage PB, enjoy some opera, and get a clean shave and a haircut. This is one of those places, had it not been for the Internet, you would only heard of via word-of-mouth. No website, no ads, no blaring neon sign or even a candy-striped pole. And thank god, no TVs. (This spot and Drink are like my two no-TV oases in the city). Enjoy that Maria Callas! When your cut is just about done, you'll probably get a scalp massage followed by a warm shave. Mmmm. Excellent barbershop. Classic quality barbers. Get a scissor cut or a lineup. Make an appointment and they will treat you like a king. No frills, no nonsense. Barbershop the way it is supposed to be. If you want fancy go get a manicure and pedicure with your cut on Newbury Street. If you aren't a metro-sexual; come here. Shame on the people who waste their time or money on "fancier" barbershops. Other shops may give you a "free" beer but at over 30 dollars for a haircut... you um are paying for that beer whether you drink it or not. read more

My roommate has been going here for a couple years and I only recently decided to give it a whirl - wow was I glad! Arthur (old and Italian) and Jim (younger and Albanian) are possibly two of the most entertaining people whom you could ever have cut your hair. This is a great place to take a 30 minutes respite from a busy job in the middle of the day. So much care is taken to the cut and the head massage is a surprise at first but a nice added touch. Worth well more than the $16 they charge, I will go here to get my hair cut as long as I live in Boston. Only downside is probably that it is a little tough to find - down an alley, up a few stairs, and around a corner - but it is definitely a hidden treasure. Sometimes you'll even get offered a glass of Arthur's homemade wine... read more

Just moved here from California. Walked in at about 9:15 and they saw me right away. But next time will call to make an appointment. The barber spent a good 30 minutes cutting and styling my hair, and then finished with a straight blade to edge my sideburns and back of the neck. The price did go up to $19 from $16, which is a bit pricey... I will probably shop around to check out other places and compare pricing/quality. read more

Just like everyone has said, this place is really great! It's completely relaxed and they do a really nice job cutting the hair. I had Kevin take care of me and he really took his time and cut the hair carefully but still got me out of there in 20 minutes. The hot shaving cream and shave on the back of the neck is a nice touch that you don't get everywhere else. And for $20 (16 + tip) you can't beat it. I did walk in in the morning thinking they would take a walk in, but they asked if I had an appointment. I've since moved to NYC, but found this place via Yelp when I was working in Boston and agree with the great reviews. They are efficient, professional, quality barbers for a very fair ($19 w/o tip) price. I'm pretty sure it's by appointment only. Dori was my barber and I like to leave a good amount of hair on top. He nailed it every time and demonstrated good attention to detail. He would take about 1.5" off the top, and then stop to ask me my thoughts and if I wanted more off. It's a simple gesture, but it's the courtesy & willingness to do a job well done that sets these guys apart. They also put a warm towel on your neck and give a quick scalp massage. Not sure if that's par for the course at other barbers, but I never had it before. I'll take a scalp massage anyday! read more

This place truly defines what a barbershop experience should be. Two guys that maintain a non-descript shop in the back of a non-descript office building, but they do a great job cutting hair. I called them up around 4:30pm because I was looking for a haircut before a presentation that I had the next day, and of course they were all booked up, but the guy on the phone said that if I swung by around 5:45 then they would see if they could squeeze me in (they close at 6:00). I stopped by and both guys were busy, which was no surprise and no problem because it gave me a chance to peruse the "entertainment" magazines (of which they had a solid collection). Right around 6:00pm they both finished up with their clients, and agreed to stay around late to give me a cut. Now I don't have a whole lot of hair, and it would be pretty easy for a barber to give me a cut in 5 minutes (especially if he's trying to get home because his shop is closed). This was not the case at all. The younger Albanian guy (tough to understand, but loves to chat) gave me a full 20-minute haircut that had more detail to the edges and sides than I'm used to. Throw in a two-minute head massage and a thorough clean-up of all small hairs and it can only be described as a perfect haircut. $16 for the cut is well worth it, highly recommended. read more

A real hair cut - I'd almost forgotten what it is like. Where the barber actually focuses on individual strands of hair, rather than taking an electric razor to your entire head. You are best off calling for an appointment here. And watch out when the fat lady sings - the old guy (haven't mastered their names yet) has a habit of swinging his arms out and singing along on the high notes - which can be a bit disconcerting when he has a straight-edge in his hand. read more

Best babershop that I've come across in Boston. Haven't had my hair cut by Arthur but Jim is really great. I showed him a few photos on my ipod and about 20 minutes later I had the exact haircut that I showed him. I'm an Asian guy and he seemed to have no troubles cutting my hair type (straight, coarse in some spots). As for the shop itself, the sitting area has lots of magazines and had a tray of cookies along with a water cooler. I didn't have to wait very long and they play really gentle classical music in the shop. The only downside is that it's in a bit of a odd spot (inside the lobby of a downtown building). Just make sure to jot down directions before you go. I plan on getting Jim to handle my next haircut. read more

I've always wanted to go to an actual barbershop. Both to avoid the boring gossip of a salon and the terrible results of a cheap chain. First of all, this place is amazing. It's tucked away in the lobby of some office building. As soon as I walked in I was greeted by Arthur, an old italian barber...so far so good! Although he looks like he might break any minute, the guy has the steadiest hands I've ever seen. The barbershop banter starts up pretty quickly as Arthur takes every razor in his arsenal to my head. Sometime around 10 minutes in, the other barber asks if I'd like an espresso. Now, I may have gone for a haircut, but I will return for the service. After that he topped my espresso off with a shot of Sambuca and hands it to my with a biscotti. Arthur never seemed happy with his work, continuously making adjustments, but not being picky, I liked it before he did. He asked if he could shave the ends of my sideburns and the back of my neck, to which i said, "sure!" The hot lather and straight edge was both scary and amazing. Seriously, try this place out. Call ahead and make an appointment, even if you have to wait, they'll treat you right. read more

I've been frequenting this little barber shop for over 8 years and can not issue any higher praise, their cuts and service are exactly what you'd expect from an old school barber shop. The ultimate measure of any barber for me: the use of a straight razor and hot foam to shave out the back of the neck. Done and done. I've been seeing Jimmy exclusively over these years who, by default, has assumed the 'head barber' chair. The only way place I will now go for hair cuts. I had spent more money at places like Floyd's and been very unhappy, I feel like those type of places are too busy being alternative and trendy to do a basic good hair cut. I have now been here three times. The first time I just walked in and got a hair cut from Kevin. Kevin doesn't seem to be mentioned much on here but he gave me the only good hair cut I had gotten in two years. The second time I also had Kevin. The third time I went with Jim. All three great basic haircuts, which is actually hard to give me since my hair does some odd things around the scalp line. I usually go to someplace I've either been before, or someplace where I know I won't walk away thinking I've wasted money and time on something I regret. That being said, the 16 bucks I spent here pretty much got me what I should have expected: a 16 dollar cut in 20 minutes. Add the tip, and all-in-all it's not terribly priced. However, I will probably not return to this place again. I have gotten a similar cut from a similarly-priced barbershop for years, so I don't think I'll mind finding my way all the way out to the place three or four miles from my house. What baffles me, however, is the people that are raving here. I've had much more attention to detail paid to my hair before because I've shaved it myself. I've also coughed up the extra 20 bucks for a good cut at some salon-like places where the stylists spent some time asking what you want done to your hair; Jim just went ahead and started cutting before asking me what I was looking for. When I told him I wanted it very short, he said "well, not too short." I think I know what I want my hair to look like. I kind of expected to have my hair washed afterwards, but I guess that wasn't in the cards for me. As for the neck and ear-area lather and shave? I get that at every barbershop, only the difference is at the other places, the lather is hot. Here, it was cold. Whats the point? read more
