I hadn't realized how important it was to go to a place that specialized in men's hair until I sat down with Rio and he walked me through all the ways my hair grows (or doesn't!) and gave me his thoughts on how best to cut and style. He was thoughtful and thorough; I left for the first time in years actually liking the way my hair looked. Plus he was just a chill guy to talk to. I like the vibe of the shop as well. No frills, small and cozy. Maybe I lucked out coming to the shop on a Friday afternoon but it was just a couple folks in there and I didn't feel at all rushed to get in or out. I believe this is my first ever yelp review and I'm writing it because I'm so grateful to have found Van. Van is the best at his craft. The way he cuts hair is differentiated. I never get more compliments about how I look than after I get a cut from Van. He cuts your hair to frame the face in such a way to highlight the features people find attractive. I have been getting my hair cut by Marc for years. Even though Tribe is a lot farther from where I live than where Marc used to be, the thought of switching never crossed my mind. He gives an excellent haircut (even though my hair is a little difficult), he's got great taste in music (so the soundtrack is always excellent), he's friendly, and he's willing to roll with the punches (he doesn't usually do kids' hair, but he gave my son his very first haircut and it was JUST the best). Plus, his space is always clean and well-appointed. In sum, I just don't think you'll get a better haircut or a better experience with anyone else. read more

First time there because of Yelp.....I've been trying out barbershops around the area and I would have to say it's totally not worth for $50. My experience with Gina was unpleasant. She clearly doesn't care what I want. I asked for a side part, but it turns out something very different. I think she is not familiar with foreign head-shape or something because she did a perfect haircut for the customer before me. Scored a rare, last minute time slot at 6pm using the Tribe reservation system on their website, and Van cut my hair yesterday for the first time. He's a true master at what he does and showed total confidence navigating the insane cowlicks and uneven wave of my hair -- which confounded the last guy (at another place) so much he had to ask for advice from another barber. Van is very personable - we had great conversation throughout my cut. He educated me on what pomades and products would work well with my texture hair and things to avoid. His shop is nestled in on a side street in the South End and has a great vibe. They also have a collection of leather goods and other items he makes himself for sale. I have had my hair cut by Van for two years now and will continue to at his new shop, Tribe. He's an amazing barber for so many reasons. For starters he's super personable, you won't have a boring haircut. More importantly though he's very knowledgable on hair. He knows what hair styles match what face shapes and hair types and I always trust his advice when I'm considering trying a new haircut. He'll explain why something may or may not suit me which I really appreciate. As a shop Tribe is great too. More than enough waiting chairs, masculine and woodsy paraphernalia on the walls, and great tunes coming out of the radio. Tribe also uses mytime.com to manage appointments which is incredibly convenient. Lastly the street the shop is located on doesn't have much traffic, this coupled with lots of 2 hour parking out front means I had a relaxing cut without worrying about a ticket or hearing motors whiz past the open front door. With the help of Yelp, I booked an appointment with Gina at Tribe. I arrived at the appointed hour and found that she was attempting to finish up with what turned out to be a very fussy customer. He just would not relinquish the barber chair as he made request after request for a touch up here and there. The good news was I had the time to wait and the very good news was Gina handled him politely and with great courtesy. Once on board as a first timer, Gina asked all the right questions as to my preferences and gave me an excellent haircut. She was quite apologetic about the delay.
