We have been bringing my two shih-tzus to this place for years! One of my dogs - Charlie - does have anxiety issues and we have never had any issues about him being mishandled in any way. They are always kind enough to make sure they keep our two dogs next to each other as often as possible for Charlie's sake (LOL). The last couple times we have asked them to use our vet prescribed shampoo and to leave it on their hair for 10-15 mins and gladly did it. Love this place, and we appreciate their service. Side note: one time we did leave our dogs hair pretty long so they did charge us an additional $5-10 per dog. read more

SHAMEFULL business alert! NEVER bring your dog to FIRST-COL PET SALON in Arcadia. Brought Achilles in this morning and told them not to cut him too short, was quoted $35. Went back to get him, he was completely shaved (some areas irritated and completely without fur) and visibly terrified. Then she proceeds to tell me with a terrible attitude that I need to pay DOUBLE because he was "energetic" and took extra time. I calmly explain to her that I understand, but that she should have called me and let me know about the additional cost before starting. Continues to yell at me and insist I pay immediately! Again, I emphasize that I understand certain dogs can be more difficult, and say I'll pay as long as she apologizes for not giving me advance notice for the extra charge. She then continued to yell that she's already giving me a discount because the normal rate is 38, when she had clearly told me 35!! I paid (probably cause I'm a little b*tch) and got Achilles away from her. Not only is this horrible business practice, they are genuinely BAD people. If any pet lover had witnessed our conversation, you would know better than to hand over any animal you genuinely care about to people with such ugly hearts. Not only did they do a terrible job and terrify my dog, they sprung a double charge on me and yelled at me in front of other customers!! I sincerely hope you go out of business. read more

Took my dog here before back when I lived in LA...never got around to making a review but it's unfortunate that their business/service hasn't gotten any better. They lie about their pricing and if there are any issues between customer and management, beware of their wicked screaming! My dog was luckily not harmed but she came back very frightened and I wouldn't anyone taking their pets here for even a bath. I have been bringing my cocker spaniel here for years and this review is long overdue. I love this place, great customer service and they truly care about my dog. When it was rainy, Ben would bring a towel to wrap my dog and help me to my car. My dog is very old and had unsteady gait due to slippery floor, they always try to help him stand up and help him on his way out. There might be one time they shaved him a bit too deep causing irritation, but they apologized and never happened again. When i told them the treatment my dog had to get for his cancer, you can tell they were truly concerned and sympathetic. They are always accommodating and treated my dog like their own. There was a groomer very close to me but my dog doesnt seem to enjoy going. But he likes going to first col, thats why i m willing to drive 20 min+ each way, its worth every penny! read more

Tried it once, really economical choice, but won't be coming back. Pros: - SO CHEAP! Only $38 for my 23 lbs dog (considered medium size), which is the cheapest I've found - Crack shampoo/conditioner. It is AMAAAZING. My dog's fur was so soft afterwards and smelled really good for like 3 weeks. - Really nice lady groomer and friendly staff. HOWEVER, the biggest con: - Butchered my dog's cut. Maybe it was partly my fault? I told the groomer to cut his hair short all-around, from body to face so that everything will match and it was summer. Groomer ended up cutting his snout TOO short for my comfort. Then left my dog's tail completely untrimmed, but she touched it up when I asked. I just know that my regular groomer, who I have consistently gone back to after this experience, is always able to get me, so that is what works for me. He's a scruffy terrier mix, so his fur is different from the typical small dog and that might be the reason. I'd say give it a try and see if it works for you because this place has unbeatable pricing and great shampoo. Just don't ask for a short summer cut. read more

This place is AWESOME! Your pets come out smelling OH SO FRESH N SO CLEAN FOR A FULL MONTH+! Everyday's like they just came back from the groomer's!!! The lady here does is for a great price and she'll most likely even cut you deals if you bring a family of pets! I bring 3 cats and a small dog all for $100! They stay well groomed for a LONG time! Took my dog here to get groomed on a busy Saturday without an appointment. It did take a few hours which was expected, but the lady was very nice and did a great job. This place is awesome! Dropped off my cat for her first professional grooming today and picked her up soft, pretty and smelling sweeeeet. Without any trace of injuiry or trauma even though she was a little hard to handle when I brought her in at first. Meowing violently and shaking, sometimes hissing. Am a happy Mom :D Although all the animals I saw there today were dogs and they have a sweet lil resident dog, it is CLEAR that they love/know about CATS just as much :)) The groomer, Ben, and a sweet Japanese lady were very patient, friendly, kind and accommodating. Plus, it was very affordable. $30 for standard grooming. I will be bringing my other cat here soon! read more

Great service and friendly employees! It was our second time bringing our Pekingese here and they've done a great job both times. Call ahead to make appointments; they take appointments until 3pm on days where they close at 5pm. We have a 20 lb. Pekingese and they charged us $38 for a full grooming, which we consider reasonable. We will come back again! read more

Mm I wish I could give 3 and a half stars? I brought my puppy and my friend's dog here (both small dogs) for grooming. The service was really great, don't get me wrong. They were really friendly and I even had trouble finding the place (the street they were on was blocked off) but I called and they helped me get there :) However, I did notice a big chunk that was accidentally shaved off my puppy's face :( I'm sure it was just because my dog was being difficult and moved or something though, haha. He looked a lot better when he came out though! He's a terrier so his hair's really unruly, but the groomer cut it short and he looked great :} My friend's dog didn't really look any different though. And her nails still hurt like heckk. I would know.. they dug into me the whole car ride home :( I believe the price was $25 each dog? Not bad, considering. I tipped too of course. The lady said prices won't change, so it'll always be $25 :) We also left with two goodie bags filled with yummy treats! My dog was happy about that haha. All in all not a bad experience. The location is a little hard to find, it's right by the bridge - almost under it? Also when you enter the floor looks a little dirty :( Didn't want the dogs walking on it after they had just gotten groomed but.. oh well. This place is a hidden gem. I love taking both my dog and cat here, and my dog gets really excited when we walk in, and he hates getting a bath. He gets excited because they are so sweet here, not only to the animals, but to us humans too. There is a human candy treat bowl on the front counter for us good owners! When I pick up the critters, they always give a little bag of dog treats. That is so thoughtful! Prices are very reasonable too. read more

We've been bringing our little Yorkie Leo here for about 6 years (his entire life essentially). We've moved to San Diego about 2 years ago and will continue to make our way here for our little guy. The owner is the sweetest lady ever! She always remembers Leo and her son (I think it's her son) is equally as nice and patient with us as he's always squeezing us in when we decide to make our quarterly trip to the SGV area. Leo is never EVER frightened, always groomed perfectly, and is treated like a little person. I've even heard the owner refer to him as "Leo-kun", which was very endearing and it didn't go unnoticed by us as we knew he was being treated with respect. Also when we first got Leo from his breeder it was this lady at the salon that expressed concern over a possible ear infection he may have and she was right on the mark! I took him in to the vet the next day and was thanked by the vet for bringing him in so quickly since he was so young. The thanks really was to the salon's owner as she was the one that brought it to my attention, showing she really cares about her little clients and their health. If you treat your dogs like family members, then you can rest assured that your fur baby is in good loving hands as you can tell they adore animals here. These people are wonderful and we will continue to make the long drive here just for his groomings and recommend to everyone! :-) read more

This place was very patient with my new puppy. He's terrified of people he doesn't know. He normally bites and can be very unfriendly with people. However, the owner was very sweet. I think Muuki new she was a dog lover. She treated him right. Although he was a bit aggressive at first she calmed him down and made him feel like everything will be okay. Heck!!! I was nervous myself i kept calling to make sure they can handle his behavior. He came home with a bag of treats and smelled like the doggie shampoo. The cut was a lot cuter than i expected. My dog is super important to me, and I usually try to wash him myself because he's weary of strangers. However, I was desperate for a doggie groomer and found this place through Yelp. Monkey (yes that is my dog's name) is shy and gets nervous whenever I leave him anywhere. The lady here is super friendly and gentle with him and Monkey always comes out really white and fluffy! Now, he still isn't fond of groomers (he's been kind of traumatized ever since I brought him to the Petsmart groomers his first time) but she always gives us a little pack of treats for him and I guess that makes up for everything haha. She usually shaves/trims the belly hair but Monkey hates that so I just ask her to trim the hair under his paw. A wash and a little trim all for just $25+3 for tip is a very inexpensive price, especially compared to the other groomers around that cost double First-Col and don't do as well of a job. Just give her a call in the morning and she's really flexible with just letting you bring in your dog. (I've attached a picture of Monkey for everyone to see!) :) read more

Took my 2 year old maltese here today and I was pleased. My pup had got her hair tangled in the bushes so I asked them to cut her short and they did. My only complaint is that her breathe still stinks! And she doesnt smell like baby powder like other places do lol but i guess ill do that myself. When I came to pick her up, the lady did inform me my pup has a broken toe nail so I was glad she let me know instead of me finding out on my own. overall, i give this place an A-OK. read more

Thank you so much (young man and nice woman) who did the job that my cheapie self didn't even want to D.I.Y. It's just always been so simple to call and place an appointment, drop them off and wait for the pick up call a few hours later. We have dogs and cats in our home- and we bring both here. Luckily they accepted our cats, and it made me feel really happy to have the groomers tell me my boys are actually very sweet (which i know is true). They really, really suffered with fleas at one time and your flea shampoo bath (no added cost to my total) really helped alot and got rid of the fleas. I wish you could see how happy these indoor babies are! I will always go here- they are not only the nicest, but highly qualified & experienced. P.S. I read somewhere below they are Japanese, which makes sense, Japanese people have historically always cherished and loved house pets like cats and dogs! I have two dogs, one big German Shepherd mix and one small Shih Tzu mix. The Shih Tzu has been to many different groomers before and has had many bad experiences, but this groomer is different. She treats my dogs so well, and can handle the German Shepherd's unruliness. They never come back with any nicks because she's always careful and patient with my dogs. Every time my maltipoo Toby needs a cut, I take him to First Col. It looks like a family owned business run by a mother and son (?) who are both extremely friendly! I always take Toby on Saturdays and I never have problems getting an appointment, though it could take up to 4 hours if they're really busy. The price for a full groom for Toby is $35-40 depending on how long or matted your pet's fur is. I always request the Summer Cut for him since it's pretty much summer in SoCal all year round. They do a really good job and he always comes out sooo soft. They even give you a doggie bag full of treats for your pet at the end! read more

Our dog feels comfortable and happy when she's at First Col whereas at other places she was very anxious upon arrival. She would be caged in the back of the store of Petsmarts and would be there for hours. Ben has spacious, open kennels where customers can easily see their dog and how they are being treated. I used to go to Petsmart for grooming service for my dog but that wasn't nearly as good as this place. The lady is really nice, and they don't make you leave your dog there all day and will try to work around your schedule. Prices are good too, my corgi is only $25 for a grooming and nail clipping which is much cheaper than Petsmart. The store looks a little run down on the outside but the inside is clean and doesn't smell like dog at all. read more

First-Col is AMAZING! I've taken my dog here twice and my cat once so far. I'm pretty sure I'm going to be taking my dog here forever. I've been trying groomers everywhere from at home in the SGV to LBC when I'm away at school but there's always something that isn't right. The closest I've come to perfect is Soggy Dog in LB; I thought there couldn't be anything better, until I stepped into First-Col. Cut: I explained I just wanted Cookie to be lightly groomed. As a papillon, she has a single coat and fine hair, so it's not very hard to manage. I just wanted her belly shaved and to have some maintenance on the rest of her body (ear fringe, tail, nails/feet). The first time, I left a little anxious because I'm always afraid she'll come back with bat ears, but when I picked her up, she was perfect! Her fur was exactly how I wanted it to be and while walking her to my car, 2 people said she was so pretty! :) Shampoo: GREAT shampoo. It's a very light and clean scent that sticks around for weeks. It's not overpowering, but very delicate. Her fur was so white and well conditioned too that she actually looked and felt glowingly soft haha. Service: Seriously, after today's visit, I'm completely impressed with their service. They were very polite and courteous the first time, and today was just the same. My dog had been to the vet for dental services and she smelled like hospital. I also recently adopted an abandoned kitten and brought her in to be groomed as well to fix her matted and dusty fur. It was all very last minute, and when I called in at 2PM, they told me to rush over anyway. I knew they were busy and that they closed at 5PM, and they STILL offered to help me out regardless of the timing. They could have turned me away easily, but they didn't! Price: 20 for my dog. 20! and 25 for the cat. I wish I could write that in enormous font. After ALL the places I've been to, I can't find anyone with these prices. Everywhere I go, it's always been an average of 40ish. First-Col is truly, truly amazing. Take your babies there! Also you get a baggie of treats after. :) read more

She's always very accommodating to my schedule for last minute drop off and late pick up etc...does a good job for grooming. $30 for grooming on my 12lb jelly is cheap. But I still make the drive to come to this groomer :) sometimes traffic gets crazy and id be late - they would still wait for me. * They have the best smelling shampoo for your dog to smell so powder fresh. * I think it's a Japanese lady and her son that run the business.
