We went in here expecting more hand carved leather or western type designs. Once inside, we found it was mainly designed for the cosmopolitan woman. I'm a local, I come into first street leather occasionally to purchase Brighton jewelry and while most of my visits are pleasant, today's visit was not. My mother in law, son (who was in a stroller), and I were browsing. While I was looking at the earring by the register. The woman behind the register asked me if I was planning on paying for the hat my son was wearing. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. She had previously walked by and glanced at my son who was in stroller and the shade cover was down. NO ONE could have seen of what kind of hat my son had on, much less the details on the hat. I looked at her and told her it was a $6 target hat. She nervously laughed and said it looked like one of their hats. My mother in law asked me if she had hear right. I said "yes" and "let's go." On our way out we pasted the hats. I took my sons hat off his head and looked at it. They didn't have a hat that looked like my son's hat!! Then the woman walked over with a hat in her hand and said " I thought he had this hat on." My mother in law said "it's not even the same color! You were wrong!" The sales woman then said, "it was a mistake." I looked at my mother in law and we talked out. If the sales woman really thought I was trying to steal a hat, before making an accusation, she should have gotten down on one knee and had an interaction with my son before opening her mouth! read more

So, if so could give this place a NEGATIVE star rating, I would. Unless you have experienced it, you will never realize how extremely frustrating and upsetting it is to be profiled whether by race, class, gender, whatever. So, these shops in Solvang are small; there is one way in and one way out. Michael and I went to the leather shop and they had these nice RFID wallets that I have been wanting for a while. I looked through the inventory and found one that I wanted. I was very vocal about it so it's not like I was being sneaky. What possessed one of the store clerks to follow me to the other side of the store is beyond me. I get that they want to beware of shoplifters but there is one way in and one way out. If I come out of the closed off area without the merchandise in sight, which was REd, then it is understandable. You can approach me and ask me if I left it on a counter, etc. Don't follow me around like I am going to steal a funky $28 wallet. Really? I was sooooooo pissed off. I very loudly said, "I'm not going to buy anything from this store since this woman is following me around like I am going to steal something". Talk about hotter than fish grease. They have beautiful coats, hats, purses, etc and the prices are fair especially for quality products. However, i'm giving 2 stars because me and my family came in today and the employees were audibly talking negatively about us to other people. I literally heard them saying that we were stupid people that come in not knowing what we want and said that we were "wasting time just looking around" This is disgusting and was embarrassing to us especially considering almost every person in my group (except for one minor) had more than enough money in our wallet. It's nobody's business why we were there and they had no idea if we were just browsing or looking for something in particular, and even IF we were just "looking around", your shop is on a popular street in a popular tourist town so if you don't like people peacefully looking around- EITHER MIND YOUR DAMN BUSINESS OR RELOCATE YOUR STORE. read more

Travis is the best! My husband and I came looking for a hat. Travis took his time with us and was friendly. We ended up purchasing 5 Brighton charms, which are my favorite now, sorry Pandora. We also purchased a leather hat for my hubby. I'm sure we would have purchased the hat anyways but Travis made our experience even better. read more

I cannot say enough good things about this establishment, and the people who work here. I came through Los Olivos on a weekend getaway, and found myself in this store. After a few minutes, and a pleasant conversation with Julie, I discovered the most stunning leather flats, heels, and a pair of gorgeous, unique and feminine leather boots. I bought all of them, and likely would have purchased others if I wasn't in a hurry. Here's what makes this place special... Julie offered to hold an item for me so I could think about it. After some consideration I decided to purchase it, but they were closed. I called the Solvang store and spoke to Travis... I have never been so impressed with someone. Travis went out of his way to complete the transaction, made sure it was shipped that day, and then followed up to make certain I received it the next day. I was leaving out of town for my birthday, and really wanted to travel with this item... Travis called UPS for me, and asked why it wasn't delivered that day, then coordinated for them to have it done by the end of business. I received the item, and could not have been happier. Travis - I am enamored with your customer service, work ethic and consideration for others... You are an outstanding individual and I am now a customer for life. Travis and the rest of the staff are always friendly and willing to help. Over the years we have purchased leather goods and other things from this store.
