My wife and I came in for a late dinner on Wednesday (7/1). It was such a warm evening that we decided to dine outside along the canal. No bugs! Cozy outdoor setting. We both had our own portion of mussels and a salad. The mussels have always been a favorite and no doubt cooked to perfection. Generous portions for both the salad orders too. Our waitress Stephanie was delightful and provided excellent service. The important thing is it didn't cost an arm and a leg for a great meal. Went for an early Valentine's Day dinner. This is such a great spot for a nice romantic dinner. Our waitress was very attentive and everything came out without a long wait. The bread here is so good! I swear I could've made a meal out of just that! I had the sesame seared tuna, and my husband had the scallops carbonara. I was amazed at how much tuna they gave me! This was not a small portion by any means. It was served with sticky rice and sautéed vegetables in a teriyaki sauce. I probably should've gotten the teriyaki sauce on the side, as I don't like a lot of sauce on vegetables. Vegetables were cooked to perfection though, as was the fish. The carbonara was rich and creamy with some good sized scallops on it. We also had the beet and goat cheese salad, which was large and definitely enough to share. We ended with the flourless torte, which was very rich and decadently chocolate. A few bites was enough, and we were able to take the rest home for later. Recently (June '24), we decided to break up the long drive to Acadia from our home in Massachusetts with an overnight stay at the (roughly) halfway point. When we factored in hotel availability and affordability, that point was Auburn/Lewiston. Luckily, that meant we got to sample Fish Bones Grill for dinner. I'm an ardent Yelper when deciding where to eat in an unfamiliar town. Once we entered our search criteria for dinner near our hotel, Fish Bones Grill was at the top of the search results. Now that we've been, it's easy to understand why. First, the setting is *very* cool: A well-appointed, upscale/casual restaurant in a nicely remodeled mill building from circa 1857. Kudos to the owners and decorators on a job well done. We favor seats at the bar when it's just the two of us. It's easier to sit close together--as we still like to do. Like the rest of the restaurant, the bar is nicely designed and comfortable. I started with my usual Manhattan (very dry & up) while my better half ordered a non-alcoholic seltzer and lime. The Manhattan arrived perfectly chilled and not too sweet, the way I like it For dinner, we started with the Cultured Mussels appetizer. The mussels came in white wine, garlic, shallots, leeks, and a grainy mustard sauce. They were delicious! They also came with toasted Focaccia. It was a great start to our meal. She ordered Steamed Salmon for the main course, while I ordered the Halibut special. Her salmon sat on a carrot puree with roasted broccolini, while my halibut came with zucchini noodles and pesto sauce. Pictures below. She liked her dish very much. We love to see old mills renovated/repurposed. We were excited to visit Fish Bobes Grill. So worth the visit. We were greeted by owner Ryan. Very personable and so passionate about this new life chapter with is wife (new owners since Feb. 2025). Everything is made to order so there can be a wait. Plus it gets busy at lunch. We suggest ordering your drink and maybe an appetizer while you study the menu. The mussels were amazing!!! Bigger than Prince Edward Island in a roasted tomato and chorizo sauce. Served with grilled buttered/seasoned sourdough bread. We brought the remaining sauce home. My husband ordered the beer battered fresh haddock sandwich with fries. I ordered the fried chicken sandwich with cheese and bbq sauce on toasted sourdough. Also served with fries. Both so amazing. We had the the flour less chocolate torte with vanilla ice cream. The torte was very dense and rich. So good. The ice cream cut some of the richness. So elegant inside with the exposed brick, concrete floors and beautiful decorating. They take it up a notch with everything they do. Water served once you are seated. Silverware rolled in cloth napkins. Sourdough bread. No feeling that you have to rush through your meal. A little extra in food presentation; ketchup in a little dish with the fries for example. Great fries by the way. The outdoor dining area is set up with greenery to keep it private and decorated with little lights for that romantic feel. On Lincoln Street in the Bates Mill building. We had just a minor wait, as walk-in's we expected that & were quickly seated in the bar area. Perfectly prepared martini & great Caesar salad got us started. We both opted for seafood pasta dishes - which could not have been better-although I like smaller shrimp better, these were cooked perfectly and the pasta - yummm. The scallops were seared and then added to the pasta. A bit of added Parmesan and the perfect wine kept us very happy. Kari, our server was very good - attentive without being overly so. We always like sitting in the bar area and people watching. PS-we don't usually get dessert, but Kari shared that the crème brûlée was vanilla - so yup, so we did it! I used to really enjoy Fishbones, but I haven't been in over 3 years because I'm never in the area. I wasn't aware it was purchased about a year ago. Snagged an early reservation & brought a friend, but food was not good & I had an allergy issue. We ordered French onion soup, a side salad, and mains. The salad was described as mixed greens with cukes, tomatoes & other veggies. Because of my allergy I asked for no tomatoes. I can't have any nightshades, no tomatoes, peppers, potatoes or eggplant, also no hot peppers or paprika. Iwas assured the chef was concerned about allergies & would make sure my food didn't touch allergens. I chose a scallop dish without nightshades in the description and checked with the waitress to make sure I'd be able ti eat it. The food came: the soup had a strong taste of Worcester sauce as the main flavor profile and the croutons were just soggy, dough lumps, but I was hungry. The salads had turned into a Caesar with romaine and no mixed greens, but again we were hungry...then our mains came. The scallops looked odd - they seemed orange & appeared to have a seasoning on them. There was no crust that a perfectly seared scallop should have and appeared grossly under cooked when I cut it in half. I should have trusted my spidey sense and not touched it, but I ate a half of a very flaccid, thin scallop. Immediately, my mouth started burning. I pushed the food away & figured I would take it home, wash it off & finish cooking it. I drank most of my water in the hopes of rinsing some of it away. The waitress came & I asked for more water & a box & to find out what seasoning they had used. She took the food, offered to find something we might like & came back & said there was no seasoning (why the little green flakes, why reddish spots?). She came back with another staff person who said there was only salt & pepper and that scallops turn orange when they are seared. I wish I had taken a photo of these scallops, the surface was soft, they were not seared. The looked like they were cooked sitting in liquid for a very short time. We asked for a coffee and a dessert menu and boxes for our food. We were fine with paying for our meal. I never got the water that I really needed, nor the coffee or dessert. We were told our meal was comped and have a good night. We called our waitress over to ask for coffee and she basically told us to leave...as I'm having an allergic reaction to what was probably Old Bay Seasoning. We did not make a scene & we didn't refuse to pay. I break out in hives, my eyes get gummy, my joints hurt & I feel fatigued when I have nightshades & it lasts for days. I've spent most of today resting, flushing my eyes & drinking water. I trusted when the very nice waitress said the chef took allergies seriously. He obviously does not. read more

Sister restaurant Pine Fish Grill didn't have the hours we needed and another nice establishment close by our stay was booked. So we ended up here and it is worth the trip. Fresh quality bread. I didn't see lobster roll on the menu but that is okay since you can get a good lobster roll "anywhere" here in this state. They also sold out the lobster rangoons here which surprised me as it seems like a slightly "faux dumpling" that is really really well made. Sazernac was strong with quality bitters and orange peel. Since the restaurant was pretty busy even for a Tuesday, I didn't know what my day vegetable option was and was just given potato fries and green beans which were still good. I had the seafood casserole which I loved but I just like seafood in general and casseroles. I got to sample steak which was exquisite the way they cooked it- juicy and flavorful and not overcooked or undercooked. I took a chance on their maple pancake cheesecake and while it wasn't turning my head, it was well done and a very presentable dessert aesthetically and taste wise. I unintentionally annoyed our waitress a bit probably since one of my relatives was in the bathroom so he didn't get a chocolate mint. We ended up with three extra when I asked for one. read more

I was dog sitting in the area and went to dinner here a little bit ago. We got a reservation but then ended up getting a seat at the bar (we love the bar). I was very excited to eat here cause everyone talks about how great it is but unfortunately I was not impressed. We are huge oyster fans so we asked what kind they were serving and the bar tender said oysters. She didn't know what kind and seemed annoyed we wanted to know what kind they were. We did end up getting them and they weren't great. I got the tuna dish and it was good but not amazing. For what we got it was very pricey as well. Overall I was expecting more. The dishes were artistically prepared and delicious. He had the haddock, she had the seared scallops and I had the lobster rangoons. Visiting Auburn/Lewiston ME on business vacation. Fish Bone was recommended by several sources. The local oysters were from Bath, ME. They were fresh and good sized and had a nice briney flavor. The lobster rangoon were light and delicious. The seafood chowder was the best. I had the land and sea. Steak medallions with a skewer of grilled shrimp and scallops. The steak was good but a little over cooked. Still delicious. The shrimp and scallops were perfectly seasoned. We shared an order of the crispy Brussel sprouts. This is a sister restaurant to Pine Point in Scarborough - and there is a similar "vibe" to the cuisine. And, that's a good thing. We came for the "Maine Restaurant Week" menu - and we weren't disappointed. We both ordered the Ahi Tuna Crisps - basically raw tuna done like a poke bowl on a crisp on a bed of seafood salad - there was a strong flavor of sesame and other ingredients to go with the fish. I adored the result, but my spouse thought the flavors overwhelmed the fish. Plating was lovely. For a main course, she had Mushroom Ravioli - which was carried off very nicely, but isn't a dish that leaves the restaurant a lot of room to show off. I had the Seafood Casserole, one of this restaurant's signature dishes. The fish and haddock in lobster sauce were delicious and well prepared - almost all fish and very little crumb or filler. There were some crumbs on top - and they were a bit hard, but overall, we were truly pleased with both the flavor and quality of the dish. For a dessert, again she ordered something plain, the Cream Cheese Buttercake - the crust was dry, but the center of the cake was delightful. The plating was exceptional. First time. After being seated, it took 35 min for the waitress to come to the table with water. Another 15 to receive drinks. Another ~to the 20 for apps. That's 70 MINUTES to place a food order. A smile or an apology to the diners would have been nice. If staff is behind, at least bring some bread with the water. Though other plates were fine with the food, I ordered smothered steak. IMHO "smothered" means a gravy over the steak. No, it was just dry spicy meat sitting atop of lumpy mash. When I told the waitress I thought it would be smothered, she said "the meat was roasted for 24 hours. Would you like barbecue sauce?" $24 for a plate of dry meat on boring mash. The ambiance was nice. Just FYI I would ask for descriptions of the food next time. Sugg. Kitchen should cook what is promised, At least treat the meat like you do the fancy fish dinners or take it off the menu. Give the waitress some new training. read more

We tried the local oysters (highly recommend), shrimp cocktail, FBG chowder, Land and Sea and the apple crisp. I was really looking forward to our meal here after reading all the good reviews. I don't normally complain about saltiness in food, but the salt level in every dish that we tried was out of sight. Even the bread!! I actually inspected the bread after taking my first bite to see if there were visible grains of salt because it was as salty as a pretzel, but it looked like a normal slice. My husband and I were planning to share the ahi tuna appetizer, but I found it inedible due to saltiness. I had ordered soup plus a scallop skewer. The soup was salty, but tolerable so I ate it. I didn't complain immediately when the scallops were not brought out along with my husband's entree, because I thought it would be on the way shortly. Then I couldn't get anyone's attention and by the time my husband was nearly done with his entree I just decided not to bother asking. I believe this is the first restaurant review I have ever written where I complained about the salt levels; I am not a super picky person. read more

Every time I am in Lewiston for work, my colleague would always take me here for lunch. I would also come back here for dinner on my own. This place hasn't fail me yet. Great customer service and great food quality. My favorite dishes has to be their pan seared salmon and sesame crusted ahi-tuna. The salmon is seasoned really well and the skin is seared to perfection. You can't taste the fishy flavor. The mushroom risotto that it served with this is very delicious. The hands down dish has to be the sesame crusted ahi-tuna. It's basically rare tuna with sesame crusted on the outside. It's served with jasmine rice and then topped with stir fried veggies. This is one of my favorite restaurants to entertain clients, out of town visitors, and to simply just meet a friend for lunch. The food is always very good, no matter what you order. Fish Bones has one of those menus that you really should try different things off of each time you visit. My favorite go-to menu item is their haddock. The menu changes throughout the year but any way they cook their haddock, it's going to be good. My favorite appetizer is their Lobster Rangoons and the green salad is a good start as well. They serve a variety of fresh breads and depending upon the season, you may be in for a real treat with pumpkin, carrot, or other seasonal breads. On my most recent trip, I ordered the Rib-eye Filet with Charred Pork Belly Brussel Sprouts and it didn't disappoint. The location is in one of our local mills that has been renovated into a variety of businesses including theirs. It sets a great ambiance whether you are looking for romantic, business, or fun. Oh ya, save room for dessert. Seriously. Even if you can only spare a bite, the dessert is amazing. read more

I want to start by saying that the service was very good and they made good for our somewhat disappointing experience by comping our appetizer. I really couldn't wait to eat here since hubby has been several times for work and the reviews were all good. We had a short wait in which we shared a beer that was a bit warm for a hot summer evening but that was minor. Our complimentary bread was great as were the crispy brussel sprouts. Hubby got a Diet Coke that was really flat so the waitress brought him another that literally tasted like bleach or some kind of chemical; totally undrinkable. Hubby loved his burger; we both got fries that were cold so the overall experience was just meh for me. Visited for the first time during Maine Restaurant Week with a group of 5. I got a delicious fig vodka drink that I could have easily had more of. The bread they serve before food is pretty out of this world. There's 3 types, 1 of which is zuchinni bread! For the 3 course menu I got crab dip with bread, pumpkin chicken ravioli with sage butter and walnuts and flour less chocolate cake. Everyone else got pork belly burnt ends, steak fries and a dessert. The beer selection is okay but I think the mixed drinks are the winner here. read more

Though I still consider this to be one of the better restaurants in the area, my last visit there left me somewhat disappointed. Our server was friendly, but not especially efficient (it took a couple of reminders to get her to bring one of our party's requested extra ice for her drink). She offered bread for the table, and that was of reasonably good quality; served with decent butter, not olive oil. When that was gone she offered to bring more with our meals: a nice touch. The noise level was high, even though we sat in an alcove off of the main dining area. On a steamy summer evening it got pretty warm in that location, so I noticed that the tap water served when we sat down, had no ice either. Our shared appetizer, calamari, was fried and served with a sauce which might be called "Sweet Thai". I'd call it good, but not arresting. I usually order seafood here in deference to the restaurant's name, but this night I ordered the duck special. When asked if I would like it "medium", I said I'd like it on the rare side of medium. When it arrived, everyone at the table commented on how rare it looked, and indeed I'd call it that as the center of each pre-sliced piece was cool and red. Unfortunately, I didn't find it to be especially tender or flavorful. The risotto beneath the duck was rather salty, and I found myself thinking that I could make it as well or better. My wife enjoyed her spinach ravioli. My "taste test" of her offering was good, not grand. I think the server should have offered some parmesan for the top. We capped the meal off with shared creme brulee, which was quite tasty. I'll finish by saying that the "$$" rating on Yelp seems wrong. Several other, relatively low priced restaurants in the area were rated the same. You're definitely going to drop a few more dollars at Fishbones than at most of those. So, overall, good food and service, but you won't write home about it! read more

I was in town on business for a few nights. This is the #2 ranked place in area. The building is nice. It is in an old mill. Inside is nice. I booked a reservation for one on a Monday evening. But it is 12 degrees in Lewiston Maine so it probably wasn't necessary. As a 1 person party I usually choose the bar top but a crowded bar caused me to alter to dining room. Sat me right by the tea and water station. Wasn't that big of an issue. Waitress was very nice and pleasant. Food ordered. New England clam chowder was the hit. The burger had to be sent back. Burnt the bread. Over cooked the meat. Fries were ok, homemade pickles were good. The manager did remove the burger from my bill. Toll house cookie sundae was typical cookie / ice cream, nothing special. Overall the area dosent lend itself to a lot of options. If the expectation is low then you should be fine. read more

After spending the day exploring central Maine, we had worked up an appetite. Our guest wanted one thing: surf and turf, and Fish Bones looked promising. We arrived and were immediately drawn to the outdoor patio even though it was a crisp fall evening. We were warmed by a tall patio heater and all of the extra jackets we tend to carry around with us. Our waitress was an absolute delight. She helped our guest select the right IPA off the menu and was knowledgeable as to where all of their seafood was sourced. We ordered up a few Damariscotta oysters and made them disappear quickly. They're not quite as salty as oysters you'd find across the Atlantic in Ireland, but they are very good. Our food arrived quickly. I had the True North Atlantic Salmon which was served on a mashed potato pie with a side of pickled cabbage and asparagus. I'm not an asparagus fan, so I didn't try that, but the cabbage was very good. The salmon was cooked to perfection and was not overdone or too dry. My wife had the Lobster & Sweet Pea Ravioli and this was definitely the table favorite. It took 3 of us to finish it all. The portion was huge and the homemade ravioli accompanied by lobster claw meat was to die for. Our friend had the Pub Sirloin & Crispy Lobster and all but licked the plate clean. Her sirloin was the exact medium rare she had asked for and was accompanied well by a hearty garden salad. Our waitress continued to be attentive and kind throughout the evening and we were never left guessing when she'd be back. This was probably the best table service we have received in Maine to date. We went here on our last night staying at the Hampton Inn Lewiston-Auburn. We were planning to try it anyway since it's just across the street from the hotel but we received a gift certificate so that was a bonus! I assume since it was Wednesday night and that it was around 7:30 when we arrived, the place was pretty dead! Almost no one inside and a couple of tables outside. We wanted outside anyway so it was nice we weren't the only ones! The hostess gave us a great table at the back corner with a table for four ( we were only two but we like to spread out!) Again, since it was already 7:30, we just ordered a couple of appetizers and a couple of drinks. The waitress was really cool! We had local beers and some mixed drinks. All were good! The ribs and salad were good as well. The key was the low-key outside seating! We were winding down from our trip and the outside atmosphere was perfect! Only regret was not trying the beer flight! The couple in front of us got the big flight ( I think 6 or 8?) and the flight looked pretty well poured! Only real downer was that they close at 8:30pm! But, pretty much all restaurants in the area close around the same time! Not sure why but I'm guessing it's probably due to the area. It's kind of a regentrification area with some really nice restaurants but the area is still a little sketchy especially at night read more

My second visit to Fish Bones Grill in Auburn, Maine. Upon entering I was greeted by two super friendly hosts and was able to get a table. I ordered the Salmon with day potatoes and a vegetable. First, the fish was cooked to perfection and I'm super picky about Salmon, it was delicious, the vegetables were sautéed Fennel, Tomatoes and Onion they were very tasty, the Potatoes were also delicious. As I was pretty hungry I ordered dessert the Apple Crisp was just ok.. overall my experience was wonderful, great service, great food, great house wine and one full happy tummy read more

Here for the NCAA Frozen Four Div III Men's Ice Hockey tournament, we decided to check this place out based on the great reviews-and we were not disappointed. The decor is warm and reminds you of the interior of a ship with lots of dark wood and crisp white linen "sails." The aroma wafting from the open kitchen is an intoxicating blend of herbs and garlic. I had (as I love to do) perused the menu online before our arrival. I knew the pan seared duck breast in a pomegranate reduction with smashed sweet potatoes, blueberry butter, feta and bacon was for me. My companions were also pleased with their choices of the seafood mixed grill and seafood pomodoro pappardelle with black pasta. I tried the seafood pomodoro and what pleased us was that it contained copious amounts of fresh seafood including large wild scallops and whole lobster claw meat with an adequate amount of black pasta. I felt the sauce however was a bit bland and could have used a little more salt. My companion, however was pleased. My dinner was just the right amount and the flavors successfully married. I think it was the best of the three dishes we ordered. Wanting a little dolce, we ordered the mocho-espresso pot de crème with bailey's whipped cream and a vanilla bean crème brûlée. Both were excellent and we were surprised at the large portion offered for the latter. The prices were extremely reasonable for the excellent fare. With one glass of wine, one raspberry lambic ($14), one Maine root beer, three dinners, two desserts it came to $150 with tax and tip. If I lived locally, this would be a favorite weekly hangout.
