The Chick-a-Dee is the kind of of spot in Lewiston where, if you blink, you'll miss it. It's an unassuming building on outer Lisbon St before you come really hit town, and honestly? I never really considered checking it out until my in-laws suggested we go for lunch one day. I always just saw the sign and kept on driving. Now, it is good... and as a bariatric patient, I am usually pretty hesitant to try new places simply because of my restrictions; however, I was pleased to find that there were options that worked for my post-op food plan. Yes, there's a lot of fried options, and there's a lot of pasta, but the stir-fry is what got me saying, "yeah I'll give it a go," and later, "yeah, I'd come back." The food has been consistent, and with a young child (who is a fantastic eater and not that picky... but still), that's huge for us. The service has always been great. They are accommodating, punctual, and friendly. Our most recent visit was extra impressive, because our server happily made sure to spend a little extra time and had so much patience with my five year old who is learning how to order for himself. Sad Day! As a customer of the Chick-a-Dee for over 50 years I just ordered my last meal from this restaurant. Called to order the usual, Luncheon size gulf shrimp with onion rings ($3extra) with a garden salad, a meal that I always had left overs for the next day. I was informed that that was no longer offered. I agreed to order what was previously called a dinner portion knowing I would have plenty of left overs for a couple meals. Cost- $17 with the added onion rings. Picked up the order, got to the car, vented the container so the onion rings wouldn't get soggy on my 15 minute ride home. Boy, was I glad I peeked. I was shocked at what I saw, a very small amount of (10 gulf shrimp) even a smaller than the Luncheon portion EVER was. Thinking a mistake had been made I walked back into the restaurant to point out the error. NO ERROR was made, the order was correct. I opened the container so they could see and they only added the shrimp had been weighed and the amount was correct. The food was good as always and well prepared. I did enjoy it knowing it would be my last. Goodby and thank you decades of enjoyable food. The standards have changed, and I am sympathetic to raising operating costs, or the need to show increase profits, or what ever the reason, maybe they could be courteous and inform the customers of the changes before ordering. The restaurant is a hometown staple. The atmosphere is dated and homely; the entire place is painted a flat gray tone and all of the general dinning area is carpeted (in 3 different types). The carpets are really in need of a good cleaning. The hostess was kind and welcoming and the waitress was timely and punctual with all provided services. The food was good. We ordered the stuffed mushrooms and barroom pretzels as appetizers. The mushrooms were well cooked and seasoned well. The pretzels were delicious and well cooked. For the main courses we orders the coconut shrimp with onion rings and the Boston Lobster pie with baked beans and sweet potato fries. When we moved here a year and a half ago, we discovered Chickadees restaurant and it WAS one of our favorites! We were frequent customers. The quality of their food has been subpar at best lately. The chowder is served at room temperature consistently. The food is GREASY! They don't filter or change the oil frequently enough to keep standards acceptable. The burnt taste is in the food. Servers have turned over and they seem like they don't care. Months ago I tried to get the "manager " on the phone to discuss a take out order ( my only take out order from there). I got a run around for 2weeks about him being on vacation, he'll return your call tomorrow,tomorrow, tomorrow. It never came . Items were missing, my salad was swimming in dressing, couldn't eat it. I was talked into going back. My mom loves the fried clams. So I caved in. We were all sorry again! Cold food, slow service. Won't be back again. Kelly isn't wrong. My parents took me out for lunch today and brought me to Chick-a-dee. I believe it was my first time at this location but I do believe I went to the original location in Turner many moons ago when I was a kid. The original Chick-a-dee closed back in 2012 after operating for 77 years. The family (or at least a member of the family) who owns this location, also bought the original Chick-a-dee in the '70s. I think this location opened around 2007 but don't hold me to it. We had great service today. I don't remember the girl's name but she was fantastic. The food was very good. I ordered the Mini Shore Lunch which included a lobster roll, haddock chowder, fries and coleslaw ($25). It was a very filling meal and everything was tasty. Their homemade fries are bomb. The lobster roll was good--not the best I've ever had but much better than the ones I've had in California. The haddock chowder was good once I added some salt and pepper. And the coleslaw was decent. I felt like it needed some vinegar for some balance. As someone who lives in the Bay Area and goes to different restaurants weekly, I was pleasantly surprised. What a nice place. Aside from banquet chairs, this is a large and comfortable restaurant that offers fresh seafood and killer pie and cake. The hand cut fries are insanely delicious. Finally made it in! I've been hearing about this restaurant from locals, for a while now. Seeing the parking lot, I was sure we'd have to wait. They were busy on Friday evening. It's actually a lot bigger inside than it looks though, and we were seated right away. The waitress was friendly, attentive and very good at her job. I opted for the fried shrimp. Always an amazing meal at the chickadee. I always have a cup of the lobster stew cause it's loaded with fresh lobster. I tried the lobster pie Boston style and it was so creamy and sweet. Our waitress Nikkie was attentive and personable. It is well worth the 20 minute drive for us and always crowded with regulars. So I did a pick up order and my order came with 2 sides of rice once I got home and opened the rice it smelled sour and was disgusting looking. I went back to exchange it for mash potatoes once I get home the mashed potatoes taste horrible and I didn't want to eat it due to the rice situation and now the mash potatoes ruining my appetite. I went back to get a refund and spoke to the manager . He told me that everything is freshly made in the morning and I told him well you need to check with your employees and the food because ain't no way that rice was freshly made this morning and it smelled sour . Well, I ordered gluten-free fried clams today and gluten-free fried mushrooms at the Chickadee restaurant in Lewiston Maine. When I got home, I opened the box and there was so much grease on my food. The breading was stuck to the top of the containers like the containers had been put on their side or tipped. I couldn't even eat it. I called the restaurant and spoke with the hostess and told her that I had been down about 20 minutes ago to pick up my food and I got it home and it was a greasy mushy mess and I need to speak with the manager. The owner of the establishment got on the phone and was instantly offended. He told me I was rude to his hostess. I told him I was not rude to his hostess. The hostess wanted to take down my name and phone number and I told her no I wanted to speak to a manager. It looks like the bag had been tipped on its side because all of the breading was stuck to the top of the container. He told me I was not welcomed in his restaurant anymore, and that was an easy choice for me. I did not get any sides with my fried clams. I did not get any sauces for my fried clams and I ordered the fried mushrooms which was supposed to come with a horseradish sauce and that was not included in it either. The Chic-a-dee has been a restaurant that was a very big deal in my family. Birthdays, mother days, any kind of big deal, the Chic a dee in Turner was always the go to for big celebrations. Fast forward 50 years, the Lewiston location is now the new place. The chic a dee was my moms favorite. She had worked at the Turner location when she was a teen. My mom has now passed away, but I was able to take her there for one last time. I ordered her favorite meal, the fisherman's platter, got the dinner size, whoa is that a lot of food. But i ate it 3 days straight afterwards. I want to thank the chic a dee for being a part of my childhood and adult life and for having one last meal with my mom, in spirit. The food was just as it used to be decades ago, the fish is light and fluffy. So tender. Scallops are perfect and so soft. The popcorn shrimp is amazing and delicious, and fully belly fried clams, the best part. Also came with cole slaw and fries and onion rings. So much food, ate it for 3 meals afterward. Service was fabulous, enjoyed my lunch, one last time with my mom. read more

After a TERRIBLE dining experience last month, regarding our party of six, my sister-in-law called Chickadee on three different occasions, asking to speak with the owner/manager, only to be told he would return her call - to no avail. After waiting three weeks, I decided to call. Of course, he was unavailable again, but did call me back the following day. He had an attitude from the start, and apparently, did NOT want to hear any complaints. He started YELLING (continuously) over the phone, where I could no longer get a word in, saying I should no longer do business there. Like I would choose to?? This individual should NOT own a business, as he is completely out-of-control with customers, and I empathize with his staff! He should definitely seek ANGER MANAGEMENT. And for the record, VILLAGE INN has MUCH better seafood!! read more

My family has been customers of Chick-a-dee of Lewiston for years, so it does not feel good to write this negative review: I called to place a to-go order of a small fisherman's platter and lobster stew. The stew was okay, I've had better... The fisherman's platter was completely soggy! When I called to place the order, I was told 10-15 minutes. Great, I was in the parking lot, ready to pick up as soon as it was done. I waited just over 10 minutes, then went inside... It smelled so good, as usual... It was hot and I couldn't wait to get the food home. Before I did anything upon getting home, I brought my order into the kitchen and opened up the platter to find a pile of soggy mush! I had not eaten much earlier in the day... I was so hungry, and so disappointed. When that order, which I'm sure was perfect upon being fried, was cooked, it should have gone under a heating lamp with the cover opened to prevent wetness. It was all sticking together... the shrimp was the only salvageable item, along with the stew, which I saved for my lunch today. I spent $58 inclusive of a $5 gratuity to be polite. I live just literally 3 minutes from the restaurant, so no excuse for serving food in that condition. What probably occurred was that the order was fried right away then left to sit until picked up. It wasn't very busy. Perhaps I should've ordered inside and waited... Either way, waste of money. So disappointed. My parents loved that place. What a bummer. I will never go back. I was not about to back out, then inside the restaurant with my reject order in tow to make a complaint in front of customers. I could have tactfully stated my case and likely would have been compensated for the fisherman's platter-- I was so disappointed and too frustrated to return the food. This is a heads-up for the public, who order food from their cars or homes, then get there to pick up soggy seafood and fish-- gross! read more

This place always knocks it put of the park. The food is always amazing. It's been about 5 years since I've been there and the only thing that has changed is they don't give fresh bread anymore. That was the only thing that was disappointing but I could live without bread. The fisherman's platter is massive with shrimp, scallops, clams, flounder, fries, onion rings and 2 choices of sides. We received a suggestion from a local that this would be a treat place for dinner. They were correct! To start, this place is deceivingly large - lots of space for large groups. The menu had such variety that I had trouble deciding what to pick. It's one of those places that I would normally have to go back multiple times to try everything that sounds good. The serving sizes were very generous, the waitress staff is very friendly, and we had a great time! If you're ever in Lewiston this is the go to place! The seasoning in the Fisherman's platter was perfect, and the seafood was also cooked to perfection. Personally, the clam chowder had too strong an onion flavor for my liking - but the clams and potatoes were cool perfectly. Live in CT but in town for business. Dinner here tonight on the recommendation of a local colleague. Wednesday night happened to be lobster roll night to my great delight. I started with a cup of the Lobster Stew which did not disappoint. Loaded with chunks of lobster in a light but creamy broth. Shout out to the amazing bartender, Tori who took great care of me! She knows how to handle her patrons, even the over-indulged touchy-feely creep I sat next to at the bar. Apparently he is a regular, well known wealthy patron. Enough said...thankfully he was on his last drink... But the food and Tori's great personality won out for a great experience. Will keep going back as this restaurant and the employees even the manager are very friendly and even turned down a light where I was sitting to help with a migraine I was dealing with due to having relapsing remitting MS and during a flare up.
