I Went to the Fish Hut today and ordered a 2 pc. Halibut fish and chips to go. The fish did not taste fresh. It looked and tasted as if it had been frozen. thawed battered and fried. It was dry and did not have any flavour. The chips were a bit dry as well. I called the Fish Hut and explained I was not happy with the order. The person told me she would have to see the fish to see what hsppened and I should take order back do she could see it. I explained I live the other side of town and could not come back today. She said I would have to come today with the order before she could do anything. I told her again I could not come back today but I would be posting a review. Sbe didn't seem too concerned about that. Small place looked fine. read more

There was a time when this business provided a decent fish and chip meal, however more recently the quality of their food is not acceptable. The last two times we were given fish that was mushy and appeared not fully cooked - GROSS! We also have a problem with the "service". When you call and place an order by telephone they ask when you would like to pick it up. A time (eg. 15 minutes) is agreed upon. When you arrive in 15 minutes they have not even started cooking the food yet and then I had to wait another 12 - 15 minutes for the poor quality order. What a waste of time. Needless to say I definitely will not order from there again and furthermore will NOT recommend this establishment to anyone. read more

This is the greasy spoon I was looking for! The staff was really friendly and there is ample parking. I know that when I'm craving a battered fish with fresh fries (make that a poutine plz) I will be coming to this little gem. We really enjoyed our meals here, the coleslaw was fresh and the fish was crispy (not crunchy) and the fries perfectly cooked. Awesome gravy!! The restaurant was clean as was the bathroom. Nice and fresh. Had some halibut and chips. Not overly battered or fluffy. Chips were crisp and you can tell the oil is changed regularly as it call came out that golden yellow. Fish was moist as well. They also gave out Heinz ketchup packets. Interior was nice and clean, busy with take out orders. read more

Wow! This shop truly deserves a 4.5 star review! This local mom and pop shop truly mastered the craft and serves up some top notch fish and chips. The shop is frequented by primarily locals that have kept this hidden gem from the rest of the foodie world. It is located in a local indescript plaza that does not scream come to me but with this shop, the traffic should increase. They serve up several types of fried fish from the everyday "white fish" to the coveted Halibut. I samples the Seafood platter that includes a very decent sized halibut, 4 scallops and shrimp along with a 2 piece haddock platter that includes freshly cut fries (chips), coleslaw and a wedge of lemon. The fish was all very fresh and had good texture, the batter was light and airy and not oily that many shops default to now. The scallops and shrimp were also very fresh with good texture and sweetness. The entire serving was spot on and could take on any chip shops in Toronto and then some. Their beverage selection does not include alcohol but the variety will suit any taste including a cup of non vintage Waterloo's finest tap water. I will need to make more reasons to come to Waterloo to visit this place out before others discover this gem out! read more

Tried this spot as a last minute choice. Would definitely not recommend. We had the halibut and chips and haddock and chips ... both were low quality for the fish and chips. Fish was mostly batter and overly greasy and fries seemed to be recooked as opposed to being fresh. They were almost a harder chewy texture. That said the coleslaw was great but not a reason for me to ever return People were quite nice but unfortunately the food was well below any decent fish and chips. Well being new in this area, and coming from Oakville where the minimum cost to get halibut and chips is like $15 per person, this was a bit of a shocker. The fish had the perfect amount of batter and it was crisp, while it was perfectly cooked on the inside. The fries were very good, and the gravy (for the fries) was very very good. Not too salty, but just right. The best part, this delicious meal only cost us $16 for TWO!! For halibut! I feel like if this gets out the price will change so let's keep this between us! Seriously don't ruin it... Needless to say anytime we have a fish craving this is the place we'll be coming to. read more

Wasn't really a fan of the fish here. Had sort of a stale taste to it as it had been lying somewhere in a freezer for months on end. Staff was also not so friendly and even told me "Buy or Bye" when I questioned their outlandish prices. After returning from a trip to Ireland, was looking for good fish and chips. Tried a couple of other local places, but they didn't measure up. That is until here....the batter was light and crisp, the chips well cooked, and the choice of fish and price...when I entered, it was small but people were lined up to order and others waiting for there's. They have a few tables but it looks like the fish shop in Ireland, where people got take away... The fish was too salty and the fries tasteless, but what really upset me was that I was told the fish would be ready in 10 minutes and it took over 25 AND the fish was packed on its side in a brown paper bag. The oil from the fish leaked out and left horrible stains on my car seat and my clothes. read more

We tried this restaurant tonight for the first time. We ordered 2 orders of the 2 piece white fish meal. It came with a large order of homemade fries. The breading was perfect - the meal delicious. It was a Friday evening - and took about 35 minutes from the time I ordered it until it was ready. The place was very busy for takeout! Don't expect a fancy place but the food is great and value is good. We highly recommend The Fish Hut. read more

Best fish and chips I've ever had, and I'm a huge fried-fish enthusiast. The batter is perfection - crunchy but not too heavy. The portions are VERY generous, especially given the low price point. They also have amazing lunch deals - I believe 2pc fish & chips for $5 or something in that range. I can't comment on the fries or any other items on the menu, but the fried "white fish" is simply spectacular! HIGHLY recommend! read more

Shrimp - very good Halibut - excellent Coleslaw - very good French Fries - terrible I have doubts that the fries are fresh cut. They were maybe sitting for a while cooked or uncooked. On my fifth visit here in a few years to order Halibut and Fries, the quality has been consistent, Halibut was always a good size and had a crispy batter while the fries were always dry, stiff and overcooked. Poutine was awful due to overcooked fries. "Always" means never wavering or changing. The asian couple running this shop are friendly, work hard and work fast. read more

This restaurant is so unassuming--a tiny hole in the wall in a tiny neighbourhood plaza--but it is among the best take out places in KW. Actually, you can eat in or take out, but in either case they fry the fish and chips right before your eyes.
