Went for the first time today. Choose this place because I had my dog with me. The food was fantastic but be prepared to serve yourself for everything if you are on the patio. They brought out the raw oysters I ordered, no Tabasco. Requested some, never heard from anyone again. Had a tab, would have ordered another drink or more but it is hard to do that when they NEVER come back. Put my dog away and closed my tab. May give it another chance but this experience sucked. read more

UPDATE 9/27/16 Knocking down to 3 stars. Went to the Plano location today, and the small shrimp cocktails my wife and I got had very little shrimp. They've significantly lowered the amount they put in. It used to be overflowing with shrimp, and it was rare to get a spoonfull without one. Today I am guessing maybe 1/4 the cup had shrimp. They also only serve one regular sized shrimp in the garnish now instead of 2 lIke they used to, and now one greek olive instead of 2. I know they aren't hurting for business, so this is probably just a way to squeeze more money out of an already overpriced (but delicious) cocktail. Lastly, to add insult to injury, the cocktail wasn't even full with the sauce and juice to the top. And ask for the lime on the side, it's just taking up space. ORIGINAL REVIEW Love this place to death. If you are a fan of Aw Shucks or Big Shucks, this is virtually the same exact menu and food, minus a few minor differences. My only complaint is how they price their shrimp cocktail (which is a favorite and is delicious). The price for the small is $4.95, the large is $8.95. Never get the large, it isn't a good deal. Let me illustrate, rounding up on price: Small: $5 - 8oz. Large: $9 - 12oz. 2x Small $10 - 16oz. 2x Large $18 - 24oz. As you can see, there is a 4oz. difference between the small and large, and you are charged $1 per oz. for the upgrade to 12oz. If you buy 2 small cocktails instead of a large, you get 16oz for $10. 4 more ounces than the large size for just $1 dollar more than the large size. On top of that, I feel they are overpriced to begin with. "Coctel de camarones" are very cheap at other places. There are many different versions of this popular Mexican recipe, but Fish Shack's is the pretty basic "household" edition. For this price I would expect the bowl sized versions with more ingredients. In my opinion they could make the large a 16oz., or lower the prices on both. Just got home from an early dinner with my parents-who LOVE this place and I have to agree...I have never gotten a bad meal here. I get their Greek Salad Add Salmon Add a couple Scallops or Greek Salad Add Scallops or their-probably best I have ever had, COCONUT SHRIMP-man, so good!! I love their hush puppies too! They have beer on tap, staff is always, always, ALWAYS nice...my poor Dad left his wallet there couple years ago, realized later and went back and the very nice owner said, I was waiting for you to come back;meanwhile, held on to it for him. The cashiers are friendly, bussing staff are very nice, guys in the open kitchen-you guessed it, nice and great at putting together some fabulous catfish, cod, shrimp baskets. Now that the construction on 15th has finally ended on the right side, no reason to not go and enjoy some great seafood!! Love this place so much!! Ps. My favorite is the scallops with grilled veggies (comes with veggies and rice). 8 large, succulent scallops which are as tasty as the high end places for a lot less--and you won't leave hungry. The fried catfish and shrimp is light, crispy and never greasy. All the meals seem to be substantial portions and everything is fresh. There is a beer and wine if you are so inclined. My family and I came to this restaurant when it first opened. In no exaggeration, we've eaten here 2 even 4 times a week for 10+years. We always brought family and friends and wanted everyone to know this place. However, a few months ago (dont know her name) the blonde manager kicked us out for no logical reason. My father had approached the register and asked to get his check revised. They kept saying to hold on which he did. After a while of waiting he went to ask again and mentioned he had gotten charged twice for something and needed correcting. My dad naturally has a loud voice, and all the employees there know my father know his voice and have created a friendship/vibe. One of the newer girls said my dad was raising his voice. Meanwhile, our family friend was waiting on his beer and noticed they left it at the bar instead of bringing it to him. The blonde manager refused to bring it and said for us to get out. She made a huge scene in front of the entire restaurant saying my dad was scaring the cashier because his loud voice. We took our phone out to record and she said she would call the cops if we didn't leave. In no way did we deserve to be treated like that, especially after being customers for a decade. My father even said he was just confused about the ticket, and that he is really confused why she's threatening with the cops. The blonde manager kept saying she was the manager and she can do whatever she wants. She essentially kicked us out and we were told to not come back. Frank (The owner) and his wife were informed about this and told us the manager threaten him to leave the Fish Shack if we ever came back to eat. He said he was in a tight spot because it was difficult to find employees in case of her leaving. Regardless, we feel extremely disappointed in the way we were treated. There was no reason to threaten with the cops. There is video proof and the owner is aware of this but preferred to keep a disrespectful employee than a family of loyal customers who saw the Fish Shack as a comfortable place for over a decade. read more

As someone who doesn't typically enjoy seafood, I really enjoy coming here. My family eats here all the time because the food is so fresh. The scallops are always tender, the catfish fillets (both fried and grilled) are always fresh as well, and the shrimp cocktails are delicious. The thing I appreciate most about fish shack is their consistency in serving fresh seafood. It's not often you find a place like that in north dallas, and to have good experiences every single time here at Fish Shack means a lot, especially since I'm so picky when it comes to seafood. The service is quick and parking is free. They've even expanded their parking lot! There are lots of tables, but be mindful as they easily filled during peak hours. Some days you might have to wait outside the door because the line is so long (but worth it)! I've been coming to fish shack for several years now and never had a bad experience. I've noticed that they've increased their prices and also have a new location. I haven't tried the Richardson one yet but I know I'll be back soon! read more

Keep it a secret or do the right thing? As much as we'd like to keep this our own little secret we'll do the right thing and let you know how great this place is. And besides, the word is already out. Our first clue that we were in for a treat was the security detail in the parking lot to ensure an orderly flow of parking. The second was the line out the door from the time we got there until the time we left three hours later. The quality of the food is superb. The fried catfish was crunchy on the outside and tender and flaky on the inside. The gumbo was thick and creamy with plenty of shrimp and sausage. The crawfish were the biggest and the best we've had in probably 10 years. And the chilled seafood salad was unbelievable. Fresh and healthy, loaded with fish and shrimp on a light bed of lettuce topped with avocado. Ask for some Greek vinaigrette to drizzle over the top - the table next to us let us in on this added pleasure. My wife loved the hush puppies too. There were several tables next to us raving about the oysters... We were just too full to eat another bite. What's more, the prices were half of what you'll find anywhere else in Dallas. Our daughter had a filet and fries for $4.99. You could split the chilled seafood salad and it was still only $7.99. The oysters were only $9.95 for a dozen, and we just had a dozen at the S&D Oyster Company a couple weeks earlier for more than twice that. Plus, the beers were good and cold, filled to the brim at only $2.50 a pint for their specialty beers they had on tap. And you have to admire the owner, who was behind the bar serving drinks the night we were there. We found him to be a nice, friendly and unassuming man in spite of his success and the popularity of his restaurant. You just gotta appreciate a guy who pours his heart into his business, the quality of his product and in assuring his clients' satisfaction. I will be more than happy to re-visit this review after another visit but my first visit to Fish Shack left me slight disappointed. I ordered the Monday Lunch Special... soup and po-boy. I went with the Shrimp Po-Boy and the Clam Chowder. The bread of the po-boy was probably the biggest I have ever seen, yet there were only about 4 or 5 shrimp on the entire sandwich. The shrimp themselves were good, but I just do not like bread enough to eat a sandwich with nothing but a bite or two of shrimp, tomato and red onion. The clam chowder was very potato-y and needed some serious help from the Louisiana Hot Sauce bottle on the table. I'm guessing from the look of the food on the other tables... that I ordered the wrong thing... but until I go back and try something else, Fish Shack is just 2 stars for me. read more

I had a bowl of gumbo and it was meh... I also had a bite of my friend's grill salmon and veggies. The veggies were WWAAAYYYY over cooked. Fish was okay but flavorless. Kind of disappointed because I've always wanted to try this place. You order at the counter and give them your name. Then you take a seat and wait for them to bring out your food. They somehow just find you. It was a full house for dinner and I was wondering how they were going to find me but they did. Bowl of gumbo was $5. Prices are reasonable. Amidst the construction on 15th street is an unassuming blue building called the Fish Shack. I met fellow Yelper Venus here for happy hour on a Friday. We arrived around 4:15pm, which was the perfect time because the shack filled up quickly. You order at the counter. They have margaritas for $3.50 during happy hour. Not a bad deal at all. Next I moved to the cashier to place my order. I tried the fish and shrimp basket with fries. You find your own table, and they have runners who will call your name and find you when your food is ready. The catfish was a little on the bland side, but it was fresh. I really loved the shrimp though. they were fried butterfly style, and had a lot of taste. I was pretty stuffed by the time we left. Oh, and by that time, there was a line, so if you can, try to go early. The service was very friendly and efficient. I would like to go back to try the shrimp cocktail. read more

Quick review based on my lunch experience last week with a co-worker. I had a fried oyster and shrimp mixed basket. We also ordered some chilled boiled peel & eat shrimp as a starter. The shrimp was the best thing with make-your-own cocktail sauce. Fried oysters were OK and shrimp was a bit mediocre. I also say skip the onion rings and stick with fries. There are better seafood shacks around town but on a hot summer day I say come here for cold beer and the chilled P&E shrimp. read more

Total dive-looking place. The fried shrimp basket was DELISH!!!!! $4.75 for a glass of wine isn't bad, either. Enjoyed the coleslaw. We saw someone else order the shrimp cocktail (pictured a few times on Yelp) and we kicked ourselves for not getting it! Looks amazing. Word of caution: as someone else mentioned, the street construction directly in front of the restaurant is HORRIBLE. We sat outside and listened to car after car bottom out and lose parts of their cars. This review for Fish Shack is long overdue. I've been eating there for over two years and now feel a review can be fair and accurate. This location looks like a re-purposed Long John Silver restaurant and that set me concerned initially. After walking in, it became cozy and inviting. The staff are friendly and are focused on getting the job done. Their menu offers a huge variety of items and fish being grilled, blackened, or fried. I've whittled my favorite order down to the Oyster and Shrimp basket and add a Catfish filet to round out my Seafood Trio. I will go on record to say that Fish Shack impresses me eveytime with this order. It's been a consistent experience the past 2 years with the food. The flavor, the right mix of cornmeal and cooked just right. The tartar sauce and ranch dressing taste in-house made and they are the perfect compliment to the seafood. For the sides, I ditch them in favor of a cup of their Seafood Gumbo. Chunks of shrimp in a roux over rice...doesn't get better anywhere else. I usually eat here during lunch and I recommend getting here early. By 1130-12pm, the line starts going out the door. Once you taste the food, you'll see why. The only negative and the reason why it isn't a 5 star review is the consistency of not getting drinks refilled at the table. Sometimes we get checked on, other times we have to go take our cups to the counter...which can be a task when it's crowded in there. Good thing is the cups are the larger size yet I don't want to get up and go refill if I don't have to. Bottomline: Fish Shack has some of the best fried catfish and fried oysters in DFW. Combined with homemade tartar and ranch, it's a great lunch spot. Prices are good, service is quick, and I always leave satisifed. I will continue coming back! read more

I'm going to have to go back before I seal the review vault on this FS. The place is fairly no frills - decor reminds me of the open air seafood shacks along the gulf coast in FL and AL. There are picnic style tables/benches throughout and decor that gives the place a "boating" vibe mixed with a little sports. You walk in and up to the counter where the menu is posted up to place your order, they will bring it out to you. All of which is fine by me. Oysters on the half shell, fried shrimp, shrimp cocktail (which came with what I think were deep fried in house tortilla chips), and seafood salad (think a ceviche without the sauce). Oysters were decent. Fried shrimp was tasty. The shrimp cocktail was pretty good, the seafood salad was okay, and the fried tortilla chips were the bomb. The food was nothing to write home about at all; I'm not going to be "itching" to return. The staff was friendly enough although the guy at the counter seemed just a tad annoyed by my menu questions and delayed decisiveness. The bonus was the price - the food itself wasn't overpriced which is always a plus. I finished the night with an upset stomach and vomit session. I am totally not blaming Fish Shack...I have to go back and try the place again to make sure it wasn't an off night, etc. Give the place a whirl for lunch...see if you like. read more

We have been to the Fish Shack a few times, mainly because Top Cat is no longer in business. I always think it might be better whenever we go, but I am always disappointed. The place is neat, but small with tables inside and outside. You stand in a line to place your order, then the servers bring your food. I love seafood and this place does nothing to enhance the flavor. The portion sizes are big - just like most things in Texas and the people are generally friendly. My complaint is that I cannot get over how bland their food tastes. It's is missing seasoning and not even salting the food helps it. I've had all their fried items (oysters, fish, shrimp, etc). I am really not sure why it gets such high reviews - maybe because there is not much else to compete with it. My family used to come in from out of town and my Mom always wanted to go to Top Cat for fried oysters. Since they have closed down, I have never taken my Mom or family to the Fish Shack because they are not up to par. Thankfully, I have found a new place that actually seasons their seafood and I don't plan on going back to the Fish Shack. Overall, I would not recommend this place to anyone who likes flavorful seafood because you won't find it here. read more

Please don't go here. it's been getting too busy on the weekends and it is now difficult for me to find parking at one of my favorite cheap eats seafood places in the DFW area. Yes, the beer is cheap. Yes they do fried food exceptionally well. Yes, the food is reasonably priced. Yes they have multiple TVs. Yes they have a great patio that is climate controlled in the winter. Food seasoning can be an issue - but there are plenty of condiments available. The Mexican shrimp cocktail here is called the Santorini - just with 2-3 olives. Don' know why they try to make this difficult - but just like at In and Out you have to understand the menu options. Get a side of tortilla chips - better than crackers.. Fish tacos are a little different - but tasty. Poor-boys are the weak spot. They are cheap for a reason - 4 tiny shrimp (fish issue too) on a 6 inch sandwich - just a shame. Loose a star for this as I always have to buy more seafood to make it worthwhile. So please, stay away or save me a table outside.... read more

I am giving this five stars for the amazing rainbow trout, it was so light and flaky. Also, the sweet girl who did the register on 5.13.17, sorry did not get this sweet brunette girls name but she spoke clearly, was super friendly and when I came back to get my to go food about ten minutes later, she got my bag immediately walking in the entrance and met me so I didn't have to go all the way to the counter and ask. I think that is excellent customer service. Also, the salad was awesome minus the cabbage. Place is fun and yummy. Veggies were also diced and cooked to perfection. The crab cakes had great flavour but it was good a little non homemade to me and I am not a fan of the fries but it's a personal preference. I'll be back weekly and have to confess I wish they had a location in the 75070 range and Coppell area. Thank you for amazing customer service and yummy food. read more

Let's go fishin! Literally let's go to the fish shack and get some catch. Love love their fried catfish. Perfectly crispy not overly greasy and they come with tasty jalapeño hush puppies. This also happened to be the daily special so it was $5.99 for two very large catfish fillets, hushpuppies and fries. Their daily specials seem to be the perfect thing. I also read that they have happy hour so hopefully when it's cooler I will come back and sit on the patio with a beer and some fried seafood. Sooooo will be back!!!!! read more

Today was my second time here. The first time, I got the catfish and it was good (though the fries made me go across the street to McDonald's and get an order.) Today, I decided to try the cod. Mistake. First of all, they were nice and brown on the outside but wet on the bottom--which leads me to believe they were frozen and then cooked too fast. The fries underneath were soggy from being wet. The fish itself was rectangular, again making me think: frozen. Last but not least, they were Not seasoned. The only way to make them flavored was to dip each bite in tartar sauce. A complete waste of money (unless you like unseasoned, frozen fillets.) Haven't tried the shrimp or gumbo, so all I can recommend is the catfish. read more

The Fish Shack occupies what my Plano-raised fiance swears was a Long John Silvers. Needless to say, he was a little skeptical about a random seafood restaurant I found on yelp (we have been misled a time or two before). But Rockfish was not going to happen, and my hanger (that's hunger anger) was out of control, so to Fish Shack we went. It's a tiny little place, and it was packed to the gills (ha ha, gills). I ordered grilled salmon with gumbo, fiance got a chicken po-boy with fries. Snagged the one empty table, gumbo in hand, and got to eatin'. The gumbo was impressive: not too hot, not too bland, good amount of shrimp, some sausage. Om nom nom. Your food comes out with a guy carrying a tray and shouting your name-- I feel a little bit like a 7 year old when I raise my hand when my name is called, but to each her own. Anyhow, fiance was delivered a shrimp po'boy, with no fries, which was not gonna fly. So that had to be sent back. The chicken po'boy he finally received was edible, but a little on the lame side. Fries never arrived. My salmon was good. The veggies were good, the rice was good. I left feeling super satisfied, and I ate only half the portion of fish. We finished it up with some T.C. Shaved Ice so fiance wouldn't feel so sad about his non-seafood meal-at-a-seafood-place disappointment. We'll be back though! read more

Part of my effort to find the perfect Gumbo close by. I tried this place shortly after they took over the Long John Silver's that used to be here some years back. Thought it might turn out to be a good catfish place but was not impressed. Since then this place has apparently done well so decided to try it for my Gumbo search. A good crowd for a Saturday afternoon which required a line to order. You order at the counter and they deliver to your table. Ordered Gumbo and Hush Puppies. Gumbo was ok, but not the real style of New Orleans Gumbo - not the flavor I was looking for. Lots of tiny shrimp in it but the wife felt they weren't very good. Hush Puppies were not the traditional variety. Sort of a corn bread and cake type mixture. Seemed a little sweet and too soft for my taste. Lots of people there though. Noticed they really pile on the fries on meals like they don't serve much in the way of fish. But, it works for some. Will probably be back to try the place for catfish as I really haven't found a really good source close to Plano. Just won't be eating the Gumbo... read more

First visit to the fish shack on a visit to Plano. Overall pretty good. Had a combo fried catfish platter and it was done right just as I expect in Texas. Hot, cooked just right, and very tasty. The other three members of the party tried different items and they were all demolished. Not a lot of seating when it gets busy but that is the only real downer. read more

If you care about oysters on the half shell, skip this place. Some were served so spoiled they were pink. The others were just slimy and everything bad. I love oysters and this place should take them off their menu until they have some sort of expertise to buy, store and serve them. The catfish filets and the onion rings were fried very well but lacked seasoning. If you like bland, you'll be happy. I wasn't. A nice plus is that there's a Plano pedestrian cop hiding out back reporting to street patrols patrons that leave the parking lot with whatever criteria he's using. So you might want to skip the drinks. If you have a favorite oyster bar that's a longer drive, make that longer drive. read more

Had heard about this location after trying a different place and figured I would give it a shot. The parking was easy and the place was cute. It was a bit cold in the addition where we sat until the heaters were turned on. The drinks were huge, which was a plus...my food (the 1/2 lb of boiled spicy shrimp) came out with the rest of the food and I found them to be a bit bland. I think if in town again I'll stick with the first place I went to. read more

A regular favorite for my family. Husband and I have taken to sharing a bowl of gumbo or red beans ans rice along with a grilled tilapia fish platter. More than enough food for two.
