Their catfish dinners are awsome. Made the mistake today of ordering fried catfish po boys. The bread was thick and fresh, lettuce crisp, tomto fresh, however the shaved miniscule piece of catfish placed on the sandwich was almost lost. I honestly was embarrased for them to put out such a meager offering of catfish on a sandwich. I doubt you will ever see this place on diners, drive ins or dives. Excellent food, affordable prices. Always packed. Lunch hour could be tough, and Sundays are super busy. I am VERY picky about my fried catfish. Everyone offers it but almost everywhere else they screw it up. Too much batter, overcooked, bad cuts of fish, whatever. Fish Shack NEVER screws up my catfish. And the pieces are huge, I can get a 1 piece basket with fries (ok) and hushpuppies (AWESOME) for SIX BUCKS and I am done. If you are a big eater, the 2 piece basket is $2 more I think. Sometimes the Mrs and I split that, or the 1 piece and a side like red beans & rice. It's an order at the counter style place, low key. Decent beer/booze/wine selection. Even when busy they crank the food out. It's always busy, but the line moves at a decent pace... but pay attention when you pull up... if the line is coming out the door or you have to park across the street then you know you're in for a little wait. Wife likes the dungeness crab too. She used to be a snow crab snob, but these are big. The owner is super nice and frequently works the register, he's even pretty good at remembering the names of locals. Only downside is the parking and the wait. But it's worth it. Hook, Line & Sinker (the downtown Dallas location, NOT the new one on Preston) was my previous go to for catfish, but this is BETTER, CLOSER, and CHEAPER. I find it ironic that the overflow parking lot is across the street behind a Grandy's! I assume that location doesn't sell much catfish!!! Another potential downside... it's a block from the Plano police department and cops love this place. So don't go crazy on the cocktails. read more

The absolute BEST Catfish and Shrimp I have had since living in Plano/ Dallas. It's fried perfectly and has the right amount of seasoning NOT salty at alll..I have been to Pappadeaux, Razzoo's, Cheddars to name a few and they cant touch The FISH SHACK.. They make there food to salty way to salty. and it's not fresh tasting at all. This is my favorite little getaway spot for me time. The oysters on the half-shelf are amazing and the prices are great too. The fried shrimp and oyster basket is scrumptious. The fish is very fresh but side orders get mixed-up during "rush hour." Prices are reasonable for the fare. Skip the "other fast food" places even if you want fish sandwiches and enjoy the conventional options here. Seating may be problematic during peak periods but then there is always the to-go option. True to it's name, this place really is a shack. It kind of feels like a sports bar inside, with concrete floors and lots of open seating. Tried their catfish combo and it was actually pretty decent. I have been here a few times for lunch and the line gets long with parking kinda tricky so try to go early or later. But once you are out of the line you food does arrive fast. I would say there are things here that are great and things I will pass on. I think they really cook the catfish well and the portions are good. The fried pickles are the best I have ever had. They are the spears. I don't usually like hushpuppies but theirs are really good. Not too greasy or dried out and a nice flavor to them. If you are from Louisiana like me, you will want to not try the po-boy. I have had the oyster one and not sure what was going on with that. The bread is of course not French bread and therefore not a po-boy in my opinion. It is some overly chewy hoagie bread. I think I may have had 4 oysters on it? I basically tossed the bread and ate the oysters off it but was highly disappointed. The gumbo is not gumbo but more of an etoufee of sorts. That is not to say it is not tasty cause it is. But when you order gumbo you expect gumbo and not whatever that was. That being said, I would order it again but not if I had a taste for gumbo. The shrimp is good too. I like the flavor of the shrimp and fish more than how they do oysters and I love oysters. I don't live or work close to this place so I would not frequent it as I live in proximity to other options. I'll start off by saying that I have spent half of my lifetime living on the gulf coast (FL, AL, MS, LA) so I know what good seafood taste like. The establishment itself is as the name states "shack", but by no means any different than many other fish houses I've visited in the past. The family all decided we'd go with something safe so we decided in the fried catfish, fries, and onion rings. However, I added a side of oysters as I was craving them. When the tray arrived I was pleased to see that these were actual filets of fish as many seafood establishment nowadays are serving smaller portions and still calling them filets. The first disappointment was the size of the oysters. They were literally the size of marbles. Next up the most important test of how does it all taste...The only good thing I can say about the food was that it was fresh (definitely farm raised fish) and hot and that counts for something. However the taste or seasoning in the breeding mix was no where to be found. The wife and kids( 8&5) all didn't finish their orders. This goes for the marble sized oysters as well as the fries. I don't want to drown my food in condiments in order for it too taste good. For anyone that has never been to the gulf coast they would probably say the foods great but for a kid that grew up on oysters, shrimp, grouper, red fish, this is NOT it. We won't be going back. Really disappointed overall. Onion rings were undercooked and cold. Shrimp taste less clam chowder tasteless and delivered late to table. French fries were cold. Eh... Just ok. Ceviche was catfish but I expected that. It had good flavor. My fried catfish was a couple of super thin pieces that were fried to non-existance. Only edible in the middle. Place was super busy so maybe that was why our food was over cooked. Was told by a friend to ask for someone specific and didn't I feel like an idiot when the guy behind the counter had no idea who I was talking about. Reasonable pricing. I wish I could give 10 stars! I have been going to FS since he opened. stellar seafood, great casual atmosphere, CHEAP prices! we always get the blackened fish tacos. OH YUM! I have simply stopped ordering them anywhere else. they will NOT compare to the tacos at FS!!! and we get the large santorini shrimp cocktail. Good GAWD! filled w/ big and little shrimp and big chunks of fresh avocado. the hush pups and tarter sauce are the best I've ever had. hubby likes the big fat fries. the fried catfish is yummy too. and the gumbo! do yourself a favor and go early or late. do not show up at prime lunch or dinner time. if you do go then - you don't get to whine about the line. you were warned! but, even if there is a long line, the line always moves fast. the food always comes to your table quickly. the staff always impresses me w/ the way they maintain their cool! when it gets crazy busy like that - I would surely crack under the pressure. they do not! always friendly. Ok, so I used to come here often. But lately the customer service from the young girls have not been so great. I find the young staff is not friendly and dropped my fixings the last I was there. They didn't even bother to bring out anymore to replace what THEY dropped. The owner is friendly. But I just haven't been happy with the younger staff and their attitudes. I see the cashiers smile at other people, but one in particular always has an attitude with me. I'm actually pretty easy to please. But after realizing it has happened on numerous occasions, it has steered me from returning. The lines are always long and I've had to wait long because staff forgot to give me my TO-GO order. Other than the unfriendly staff, the food is pretty good. I prefer their fish tacos. I have liked everything I've ordered. There's also limited seating during lunch hour. I visited this location today for the second time this month. All of the food is very good. I've sampled fried catfish, fried shrimp, fried oysters, red beans & rice, onion rings and coleslaw. I prefer Fish Shack over their competitors because the breading on the fried items is light and just right. I don't like heavy breading that some places have. I think the coleslaw is the weakest item, not very flavorful. You order & pay at the counter, and they bring the food to your table when it is ready. Usually takes about 15 min. This place can get crowded at about noon, but the line moves fairly quickly. The parking area is also limited. Apparently, the "crowd noise" varies from day to day. The first time I went, I would describe it as moderate. Today, it was horrible. Prices are around $10 - $12 for a combo basket. My chief complaint is that there is no combo basket that includes catfish, shrimp and oysters (all 3). Don't know why. They also have a location in Richardson. I plan to visit that location and review it. read more

Been dining here occasionally since it opened. Fun, funky, decor and good service. In the past I've usually ordered the fried catfish platter and it has always been good - not great, but good. Tonight the family chose Fish Shack. I decided to go healthy and try one of the "grilled" plates. I ordered the tilapia with rice and veggies. What arrived was a plate of two generous filets of slightly browned tilapia. The rice and veggies were buried under the fish. My first thought was "nice portion of fish, but where's the rest of the meal?" As it turned out, it didn't matter. The tilapia was oily and heavily salted. The veggies were a disastrous mix of mushy squash, onions and more SALT. The rice was void of any flavor or thought. A real disappointment. Grilling and seasoning fish properly and cooking fresh vegetables should be easy. Apparently at Fish Shack "fried" is the only thing that matters. read more

Love this little hole in the wall hidden in East Plano. I have never had a bad meal here. I am a fried catfish connoisseur. I will drive out of my way for good catfish. Luckily I have found a place near home to get it. I like my fish crispy but not burnt and they manage to find that fine line for me. I have never tried the oysters or crawfish here, but have seen them and they always look good and fresh. The fried catfish is very good, and the fried shrimp is pretty good too. I like to get the Mexican shrimp cocktail as well. They do a great version of that as well, I have to ask for mine to be mild as the guys in the kitchen like to kick that up a notch! This place gets very busy at nights especially on the weekends, but that is because the food is good! Parking can be tricky, they don't take reservations and its self seating. Take all that into account, and plan accordingly, and you will have a great experience here as I always do. I almost forgot that they have a condiment station to mix your own cocktail sauce. This is great for me, as i rarely like what most places offer as cocktail sauce, so I always have to ask for more horseradish. This is a family run joint, which is part of the charm. A sea side bar kinda feel hence the name Fish Shack. The food isn't the greatest, but it is pretty good. My favorite thing to get there is the seafood salad. It's light and refreshing shrimp and fish combination heavily flavored with citrus; served with some crunchy tortilla chips and lettuce. The lettuce is mixed in with the fish.
