Freshest seafood I had in NY. You can taste the freshness and the sweetness of each seafood dish. So this is how it works. You have to go to the tanks area and pick out the seafood you want, they will weight it and give suggestions on how to prepare the dish. Our crab was about 8lbs, they recommended three was of cooking, that's pretty awesome. The lobster we picked out was also done two different ways, and the left over part that you don't normally eat, they will cook it into a soup, what a brilliant way to not wast food! Price is a bit high, but you get what you pay for. There is a 35% pre/cooking fee. They literally cut each and every pieces of the crab legs. We didn't have to bit or crack open any lobster, crab...etc. If you are a Seafood Lover, this is the place to go. 4 Stars for the environment and echo sounds that I wasn't too used to it in the beginning. read more

Lulu is an unpretentious no frills you're-here-to-eat-with-your-hands seafood restaurant. Upon entering the establishment, you will notice the front of the house looks more like a fish market than a restaurant. There is a refrigerated showcase where geoduck and razor clams are stored, two weigh stations, small shopping carts where your pickings are placed, bins with scallop, oysters, snails, Manila clams, and tanks flanking against the wall. In the tanks there are a good array of live sea creatures to choose from - flounder, blackfish, a couple of varieties of bass, King crab, abalone, Atlantic lobster, Crystal crab, Dungeness crab, spiny lobster, wild shrimp and a few others I can't recall. David, who I assume is the owner greeted us at the counter was jovial, and had a good sense of humor as he explained the process to us when I told him it was our first time here. As each item is weighed, you're asked how you would like it cooked, and staff jots down your preferences and back into the shopping cart it goes. Items are then cleaned by staff who are stationed at the far end of tanks before it goes into the enclosed "open" kitchen where it's prepped and cooked and then brought to your table for consumption. For our table I selected live (wild) shrimp, king crab cooked 2 ways, scallops, snails, and Manila clams. I would have continued ordering geoduck, more scallops, a fish, and Dungeness crab had David not stopped us. He suggested because we already had 5 dishes for 7 people, two of which were young children, we can come back up to order more food if necessary. Beverages and vegetable dishes were ordered with our server when seated at our table. The dishes came out at a good pace as there weren't many dinners when we arrived early for our 7 PM Thanksgiving Day dinner. The restaurant is barebones cafeteria-style, blue painted walls with murals of sea creatures, tables are covered with red plastic table covers, and concrete floors. I appreciate the concrete floors because nothing worse than having a restaurant with matted, stained, sticky and/or slippery carpet that hasn't been deep cleaned. As the evening progressed, Lulu became busier and wait staff took longer to tend to the tables. After the initial orders arrived at our table and were consumed, we went up to order more food. There were no more scallops so we only ordered Dungeness crab cooked with glutinous rice. This last crab dish took a long time, possibly longer than 30 minutes after ordering for it to come out. When David came over, and learned of our wait, he apologized and adjusted our bill. We said it was really unnecessary because these things do occasional happen but he insisted so we gladly accepted and thanked him. A couple of things to consider when deciding to eat here. This is not a swanky restaurant. Instead it's barebones, cafeteria style, no frills, you're-going-to-eat-with-your-hands-dirty kind of restaurant. If you want plush seats, better lighting, true table service and a sit down meal, best to go elsewhere. Several Yelp reviews say it's expensive to eat here at Lulu and depending on what one orders, it can go either way because of the "cooking fee" that's assessed to the entire bill. The prices customers pay per pound for the live stuff at Lulu is comparable to going to local fish market to purchase and bringing it home to cook. So the cooking fee is just that, Lulu is cooking it for you. Some items depending on the size, such as the king crab and the number of people eating, can be cooked two or three ways and you're not charged extra which I feel is a good deal and comes out less expensive than eating at a larger, "swankier" Chinese restaurant. BUT when the cooking fee is assessed on everything else (beverages, and items from the actual menu), it can get to be expensive. We ordered snow pea shoot in soup from the menu which was around $14.95. With the cooking fee, that dish came out to $20 which is a premium. Was it worth $20? No, though I would probably order it again the next time I'm here so there is a vegetable option on the table. Would I come back? Yes. Lulu has everything seafood I would like to eat available and in stock. Next time abalone, geoduck, spiny lobster and King crab. read more

This is our usual seafood spot. So happy to see them recover so fast after being vandalized a couple of weeks ago. Even though some dishes could be on the saltier side, everything is absolutely delicious. King crabs, geoduck, fish, oyster, scallop, abalone, too many to name. Service is always great and attentive, and we love the casual atmosphere. Now seafood is pricy, but their price beats what you spend in the supermarket and prepping at home. read more

This place sucks because there is a huge hidden charge. They dont tell you they add 30% to the price of seafood for cooking it until the bill comes. so $500 worth of seafood becomes a $650 bill. we ordered the chicken and it was so overcooked we sent it back. it was probably pre-cooked and reheated. ordered a beef dish and that was so over cooked, shoe leather probably tasted just like that. The batter the fried pork chops was so bad it made Kentucky Fried Chicken looked good and grease free...if you want to go try go ahead but 30% premium for steaming the seafood is exorbitant imho and I will not be going back. read more

We came here for dinner. The décor was not what I had expected when I walked in. The entrance was where all the fish tanks were with the live seafood. It reminded me of the fish market. It didn't smell though. However, "the buffet" restaurant is nicely decorated in the same building.. and it's a hotel. Anyways, the price for king crab is pretty good at $28.99 a pound according to my mom (her third time here). They do charge 35% service fee for cooking for you. For 4 people, we ended up with a five pound crab. We ate everything! The king crab was fresh and sweet. It was very MEATY. We loved it. Don't have high expectations for the presentation of the food though. The pitcher of beer was very cheap. The scallops were very fresh. It was really good. DO NOT GET THE UNI. The UNI was terrible and tasted disgusting. It wasn't expensive but there's no point to order if it doesn't even taste good and leaves a bad taste in your mouth. You pick how you want the crab cooked... and we chose to steam it with noodles. I liked it a lot. We also got the sticky rice, which didn't have much crab flavor but it's a good choice if you like sticky rice. The plates are too small to eat from. I understand that eating crab can get messy but the plate is so small the crab keep falling off the little plate. The shell of the scallop was the size of the plate. Service is good though. The waiters consistently come to switch your tiny little plates to give you new ones to eat from. The napkins are so small and thin though. The food was delicious overall. I am not a fan of the décor though. I think I would have enjoyed it more at a typical looking regulation Chinese restaurant. read more

Ok, this place is a solid 4 stars, but I'm giving it 5 stars purely to offset the reviewers who knock off 1 or 2 stars based off of the price. The seafood is fresh (think about it, these creatures were literally alive in tanks just 20 minutes before they're on your plate!). The chefs do a decent job preparing the food (although I do feel that the chefs at this place when it was still called Lulu's were a bit better). The waiters do their job. They don't "over-serve", but they do enough and will always answer your requests. I don't think it's fair to lower reviews just because someone may not be happy with the bill - it should be based off of food and service. I mean, the restaurant is pretty transparent with their pricing. All seafood prices are clearly posted. The 35% cooking fee is posted. It's not like these guys are trying to swindle you. I completely understand if you prefer to not pay so much for a dinner, but then you can just go somewhere else, right? That's like expecting to get filet mignon for hamburger prices. And then people complain that waiters are upset if you leave 10% tip instead of 15% tip? You kidding me? These waiters probably work harder than you and me combined, and depend on tips to make their living. If you're leaving 10% tip, that's on you, not the waiters. Get off your delusional high horse and stop thinking that you're actually being generous with your 10% tips. Shame on you. read more

This place may not have the best decor but the food is amazing and fresh!! Even with the cooking fee it's still cheaper than most seafood restaurants!!! There must have is the razor clams in black bean sauce! OMg it's soooo good!!!! Been there 3/4 times already and I can't wait to go back! Apparent it's 35% surcharge for cooking the seafood now. Which I found suspicious when my buddy, Winnie C., mentioned 30% just a few days ago...and my friend's mom also told us it's 30% AND the owner himself said it's 30% when we ordered the food. But the waitress insisted that the surcharge was always 35% since the day the open. Oh really? Anyways, about the food...we ordered: ~5lbs of lobster and had it cooked 2 ways (scallions+ginger and a deep fried) - didn't seem like they served us 5 lbs of lobster, pretty salty and just okay. ~black bean clams - nothing special and i had one dead clam :( ~garlic snow pea shoots - REALLY oily and bland. they just blanched the veggies and then stir-fried it for maybe a millisecond. the veggies were slightly undercooked and just drenched in oil. :( :( ~steamed abalone - 2 out of the 4 we ordered were very tough. the "xo sauce" is not very xo sauce-like. the sauce is basically black bean sauce with lots of ginger. ~steamed fish (bass? forgot what kind of fish it was) - probably the best dish It's definitely something we don't have anywhere else in NYC, but it's nowhere near as good as the seafood joints in HK. read more

The seafood are live and fresh but they put too much MSG and that took away the good taste of fresh seafood. Also there is mandatory 15% tip! They will ask you to give more if you do not tip over 15%. We tipped $30 for about $300 bill, but they demanded more! Will not go back of course after this. read more

My friends brought me here knowing I love seafood. It's pretty much my diet besides carbs. Walking inside, I was very surprised. I didnt know it was a 'pick your sea critters from the tank' and they'll cook it however you want kind of restaurant. I thin this idea is fresh and fantastic. Of course I assumed the dishes would come out superb. Walking towards our table, I was not impressed by how much the dining area still looked like a fish market... Our dishes came out and, I was not impressed. The first piece of clam I had was gritty and not cleaned properly. The shrimp wasn't all fresh since some of them clearly had the wrong color. The crabs that came out were probably my favorite of the night and the meat was tender but had oil dripping from it. The lobster tasted the same as in every chinese restaurant. Abalone was partially burnt. For a restaurant all about seafood, I thought they'd be so fresh at least. read more

Expensive, but fresh seafood that is cooked pretty nicely. We ordered live shrimps, geoduck clam, razor clams, red crab and Chinese okra. Everything was nicely cooked except the Chinese okra. They didn't peel the skin off thoroughly, so the dish had a "veggie after taste" to it. One star off because their serving plates are simply too small, especially customers are eating all of the shellfish. That would require wait staff to change the plates frequently, which was not happening and we were the only 2 tables there. I would go there if you intend to "treat" someone, but I would not go if it's a get together for couple of buddies because it does get a little steep. At Lulu Seafood Restaurant, the draw is picking live seafood and having the kitchen cook it right away. It follows the concept that is commonplace in almost every seafood restaurant in Hong Kong and China. However instead of actually selecting the seafood like the Asian counterparts, at Lulu it is more like you point at the animal you want and THEY pick it for you. If you don't know anything about seafood or have a language barrier, they could pick a dead animal for you. That was the case when I told them to switch out the dead king crab they tried to give me. Seafood selection is very limited also. They seem to have only the most expensive varieties also. The majority of the selection is at nearly $30/pound. I am talking about king crabs, coral shrimp, tiger groupers, mantis shrimp, and even some foreign flounder called the Korean Turbo Flounder. It is daunting when the "cheapest" seafood they have are the lobsters and dungeness crabs. Everything seems to be at market price but they charge you an extra 35% for cooking any fresh seafood. Selection and price aside, the quality of the seafood is pretty good. Their cooking methods tries to keep it minimal and not overwhelm the natural flavors of the seafood. The service is exceptional as well. The fish mongers gave recommendations on the best ways to cook each seafood and the waitress were very quick in changing plates and refilling water. Even with the language barrier, they tried their best to communicate in English. There's an interaction aspect here that will amuse people new to this concept. You think you will get better food if you know you had a part in the food selection process. It works but you have to be assertive and actually demand for the specific fish or shellfish. But I'll probably not return as in the end, any respectable seafood restaurant should serve the freshest seafood anyways even if its behind the kitchen. read more

They charge a surcharge about 35 percent to cook it. Food was absolutely delicious. We had lobster, fish, snails, clams, noodles and snow pea leaves. We loved it all. We were surprised when we walked in the door. There were fresh seafood tanks, where you could pick the fish you wanted and have it freshly prepared, and the dishes coming out of the semi opened kitchen looked very appetizing. I highly recommend Lulu's Seafood. Our food was great and we tried things we hadn't before. We took pictures of some of the dishes. Made to be like having a meal in a Taiwanese night market! Prices are definitely reasonable, and the seafood is killed on the spot (you can hear the knife coming down on the chopping board sounds) so you get very fresh seafood. On most days you don't need a reservation since the place isn't packed; I've come here a few times on busy weekend nights and never needed one. If you come here by car, go in thru the back entrance 2 avoid the fee or tell them you came for the hotel ;) - the people who collect a $3 fee at the front literally don't make sense, they give you a card, ask for $3, let you pass once you pay, then take back the card in one exchange. The boss man is great - he always gives us a plate of pickled seafood for free, but if you don't get this plate I recommend ordering it since it is simply wonderful and worth a try. They also sell snails here, which is quite different from escargot. If you like escargot, don't be afraid to try the Asian snails, although you do need to weed it out of the shell yourself. Another note - the crab over rice is so-so, and noodles are also so-so, but if your dish is mainly seafood it is gonna be amazing. read more

Fabulous seafood restaurant!! Definitely a gem where I should go back again soon. It's spacious, with a huge tank area where you could pick out your live seafood to be prepared, and a great place for gatherings. I went with a party of seven on a Sunday evening for my boyfriend's birthday, we ordered a pitcher of beer and a bottle of wine, Australian lobster, uni, sea bass sashimi, clams steamed in onions and ginger, stir fried frog legs, more shell fish, chicken and beef. They must've served me with some VERY unsanitary foods, I had to run to the bathroom to throw up in the middle of my dinner, of which was already unreasonably expensive. The food is super fresh - really, it's actually alive and you pick it up by the pound. You can choose between different options of preparation - all super delicious; the staff recommends the best way to have it. So much food... And such a small check! I have no idea why all these guys come here and eat and complain about cooking prices, If you want cheap food eat at home PERIOD. The prices are all seasonal supermarket prices on their seafood, they charge you 30% cook fees which is reasonable. If you eat out at a restaurant lobster is 16.95 and up depending on which restaurant you go to for a 1.5 pound, these guys are charging $9.99 per pound and $3.00 to cook the damn thing. Normal weight on a lobster is around 1.5-2 pounds, So in all the prices are about the same. I been here 3 times total in the past month and I have no complains regardless food or service. It's all FRESH and LIVE seafood and NOT dead. Seafood is NOT cheap if you want to eat cheap seafood then go to red lobster and get frozen lobster or shrimp then. read more

This is my 3rd time coming here. The seafood is really fresh here but keep in mind you'll have to pay a sur-charge of 35% of cooking fee. You get to choose which seafood you want and they will bring it to the kitchen and start cooking the way you like it. Two stars for the freshness of the seafood, that is about it. And it is not a lot of variety for a Saturday evening. The flavor is nowhere near a Dai Pai Dong supposed to be. The dishes tasted like they were boiled then sauce poured over. You probably wouldn't mind as much because the ingredients sell themselves. Then, adding up the cost of the items, cooking fees, and tips, it is a pricey meal and not of good value. Though I have to admit you're paying for the fact that you can't make the same at home. so i walk in and ask for the fresh lobster the lady said she had a special $7.99 per lb... for some reason after I chose a 4 lb lobster she came to the table and said it was $12 a lb, I ordered the steamed fish along with the house fried rice a fried chicken ... It felt far from the old Resturant i used to go to once a week .(up until few weeks ago) this was one of those rare occasions where u feel that your money was wasted in a restaurant and u didn't get what u paid for it , poor ambiance and horrible service, food just didn't taste right ... staff kept in yelling at each other in the background . Disgrace of calling itself a seafood place, they don't prepare to bring you any good We ordered 元贝，生蚝，白灼虾,皇帝蟹... The 元贝 was disgusting, it's only warm and their sauce was fraud. They mixed MSG（师傅） in their soy sauce. The waitress did not even care to review your feedback to manager. 生蚝 was super late and brought to us 40 minutes after order as they were not busy at all. Again, I am not sure why they are in the business serving seafood. The oysters were not hot and they were warm as room temperature. The waitress was not there to serve good and fresh food, rather to chat and to be argumentative. Lobster was heavily fried, too oily as they don't control timing right. And put a lot of salt to give your heart attack. 皇帝蟹 king crab, the steam dish was only warm again and tasted bad. I would suggest you go to any place in Flushing but not here for food. Fantastic place for fresh seafood. You pick your own seafood, then just tell them how you want it cooked. Great for a small group. We had dungeoness crab, clams, abalone, shrimp and barramundi fish. Less than 20 minutes from tank to table. We got most of our food garlic steamed so we could taste the freshness of the seafood. Very casual atmosphere with friendly and helpful staff. They change your plates whenever they see shells on it. The boss came by to check on us too. The only thing is, they only speak mostly mandarin. But they figured out what we needed. There is minimal decor, resembling street stands in Asia. You basically pay market price plus 35% for the prep. So it's not bad if you want fresh seafood. You could pay double that in a "standard" Chinese restaurant. We will definitely go back for more. read more

My parents come here very often to eat here but this time I was with them and we ordered several expensive dishes so the bill was equal to 600 dollars. My dad left 60 dollars as tip. That's already 10% and there was 7 of us. When we were about to leave, this waitress came up to us saying our bill is so large and we tipped so little. My parents we not confrontational and gave another 20 dollars so they tipped 80 dollars total. Who does that? Going up to a customer and telling them you tipped so little? There only 7 of us and you in no shape or form deserve 80 dollars even if our bill was 1000 dollars. We ordered expensive dishes, not massive amount of dishes that require you to work yourself to the bone to serve us. Look, I'm Chinese and I do understand how waitering works for us but you just lost my parents as customers that use to come very often and would probably make serval thousands of dollars over time. I hope the owner understand, your waiter got compensated now but you as a business just lost a customer that would of gave you a lot more revenue. She was lucky it wasn't me.
