I'd say this gym is above average. Standard weight machines, free weights, bikes, treadmills, and ellipticals. One thing awesome about it is the number of group exercise and spin classes they have which have been pretty excellent. I can't say enough good things about this gym! I was a member for a year while I lived in Durham and loved every minute of it. The gym is remarkably clean, replete with high-quality equipment, well-maintained, has great classes, and is home to the area's most helpful and courteous personal trainers. It's a shame that franchise gyms like O2 Fitness relentlessly promote themselves as the best gym in town, while this local gem goes relatively unnoticed. A quick look at the Better Business Bureau's website, however, shows who's really the best in town. Fitness World boasts an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau, while O2 Fitness has an F. So, don't be fooled by the hype - go with Fitness World and you won't regret it! read more

I joined this gym a few months ago and so far I've been very happy. The gym is large and it's always clean. They offer a wide variety of classes as well as activities like basketball and volleyball. The locker rooms were recently renovated and they're nice and clean. Although the gym gets crowded at peak hours, I can always find a cardio machine or one will open up quickly. read more

I've been coming to Fitness World for a few months now. I became a member due to convenience. It was not my first choice but now that I'm here and I've gotten my feel of the place, I'm really loving it. They have a program for everyone and I can say there is a range of all ages here. And they accommodate that from sitercize to low impact yoga. And then there are Group exercises that will lay you out. You can request a personal trainer or go at it on your own. And NO know one there is judging you. They welcome question and are very friendly. So the cost of convenience has been worth it for me. read more

Great gym with a great staff. I've been a member of a number of two and one star gyms, which might have saved me a little bit of money. However this membership is very fairly priced and it's nice to be in a clean and friendly environment, as well as one well-stocked with excellent equipment. As of Jan 2013 though be careful joining if your main aerobic exercise is elliptical. They only have two up to date Precors with arm motion and you'll have a tough time getting on them at any busy time. read more

The people are really nice, the equipment is clean, and I've never had a bad experience there. Fitness World is a friendly, well-equipped, sunny, well-kept, and overall great place to work out. I'm an avid runner and enjoy group exercise classes, as well as weight-lifting. Ben Kirchner has been my personal trainer for about 6 months, and I've taken his kettle bell and boxing classes during the past year. I can't say enough about his overall and unique areas of expertise, including boxing and exercise science, as well as his sound training methods and advice. His classes are highly attended for several reasons--they're extremely challenging and fun. As a former personal trainer myself, I assure you that he's top notch. Take his classes and try out his personal training! You won't be disappointed!! I've been to gyms all over the country, including Chicago, Brooklyn, and Austin. *Zumba Fitness Review* I'm from DC and Melissa (fitness manager) was my original instructor when I began taking Zumba in Arlington, VA. Her and her team of Zumba instructors are amazing!! I joined Fitness World after my second baby and just knew that I wanted to lose the baby fat. After starting the kettle bell class and the boot camp class I not only started losing weight I started seeing definition. Ben and Whitney are two of my favorite instructors and always have a challenging class. They both have classes while the child care center is open which, for me, is helpful. I also appreciate the friendliness of the front desk staff. Over all the gym and locker rooms are clean and are always well stocked. My only complaint would be that they have cancelled classes that I have enjoyed and did not replace them with a comparable class at the same time. All and all I am glad I joined and have seen the benefits from a great staff. read more

Was only in town for a few days, 3 to be exact & they wanted $20/day!! Even spoke to management & all they'd offer is $50 for a week pass. I told him I was a gym owner at home in GA & that was absurd...that I was not gonna do that & leaving. They were perfectly fine with it. Place was beat up & equipment looked outdated. I'll give it within a year before they are out of biz. Too bad the closest La Fitness is 100miles away, if one was in the area these guys def be gone. read more

Fitness World is the best all around gym that I have ever been associated with. The equipment is state of the art, plentiful, and well maintained. The staff is very friendly and accommodating. There are a variety of exercise classes taught by experienced teachers to suit most any need. The personal trainers are certified and come highly recommended. There is free child care with a caring staff that is the best. The owners and management excel in constantly upgrading the appearance and facilities of the gym to provide a clean and attractive environment. This facility gets only one star for many reasons. First is the group fitness program. In the past year or so, there have only been a few instructors who are knowledgable and motivating (Jim, Amanda, Diana, Christina, Bo). I work out there in the early morning and there are no quality classes to choose from. Most of the instructors do the same, monotonous routine week after week, year after year. Other gyms in the area have much more dynamic classes that are fresh and challenging. Some of my cycling friends have dual memberships because of this. Secondly, there seems to be equipment in disrepair constantly (treadmills, torn fabric on the weight benches, dirty stretching mats, etc). Third, there seem to be a lot of unnecessary rules to abide by. Members are required to have a workout towel but there is no towel service provided, which seems idiotic to me. The complimentary coffee has a limit. The cycling room is not to be used during non-class hours (which is problematic for me since no classes are scheduled when I workout and I'm a road-biker - having access to an upright bike during the rain/winter months would make my experience much more pleasant. Fourth, the club is often dirty. I've seen large BUGS in the locker room, bathroom floors littered with paper towels, countertops flooded with water and soap, and the folks who make the smoothies don't really wash the mixers. Fifth, aside from Larry (early mornings), the front desk staff is never helpful. The don't seem to know about promotions, fees, policies - it seems to get anything resolved you have to wait for a member of management to come assist you. If my dues are going to pay these folks, I wish they would hire someone who understands what is going on week to week, day to day. For $44/month, I feel I can do better. As soon as I can get out of this contract (which isn't as easy as it should be), I'm taking my money elsewhere, as many of my friends have. If you are looking for a gym with good fitness classes, new equipment, a laidback atmosphere, cleanliness, and helpful staff - GO SOMEWHERE ELSE. read more

Fitness World is your typical offer-it-all gym: group fitness classes from boot-camp to yoga, indoor cycling, cardio equipment, free weights and machines, personal training...and so on. I'll take a moment to state that as far as group fitness classes go (including indoor cycling) the place does a great job at offering a full and diverse schedule. I also appreciate that they are equally attentive to their TRX and Kettlebell programs. But I'm giving the gym 5 stars because of the highly visible commitment to continuous improvement. Each and every year there are equipment or facility upgrades/improvements and/or program expansions. When it was time to invest in all new bikes for the cycle room, the owners sought out and purchased the best bikes currently available for use in any gym in the Durham-Chapel Hill area. In response to ballooning kettlebell and personal training programs, the owners acquired additional square footage and equipment to properly accommodate the new space needs. Cardio equipment, also, is consistently upgraded. And these continuous improvements do not come with an 'upgrade assessment' or any additional charge to members. So while I'm appreciative of the great instructors, the wonderful hours of operation, the overall cleanliness, and the very reasonable pricing--I'm most impressed by the fact that the place just keeps getting better! read more

Great gym for lifting and basic cardio! Has every weight machine you could ever need and some with friendly staff who learned my name in less than a week! I'll definitely be renewing my membership when it runs out. Only small critique is I wish they had 35lbs barbell weights - other than that minor complaint, it's a fantastic gym. read more

I've been a member for quite a few years and everyone working there is super helpful and knowledgeable. A few months ago, I got back into personal training and starting working with Cameron. Not only does he keep the workouts varied and interesting, but he also modifies as necessary to accommodate old injuries (what can I say, I'm a klutz :-)). I've been a Fitness World member for a little more than three years, and I go to the gym at least 3-4 times a week. I have nothing but excellent things to say -- the machines are in superb condition, the locker rooms are clean and air conditioned well, everything is well spaced out, and both the staff and clientele are extremely courteous and personable. They offer a wide array of group classes from kettle bell to yoga, and they also have smaller personal training boot camps that can kick start any fitness routine. As for their personal trainers -- they have an extremely dedicated personal training staff. Kevin Posey, their fitness director and a personal trainer (mine), has expertise not only in fitness, but also in education. Consequently, he knows the best ways to teach people the safest and most effective ways to work out. Fitness World's kids' room is also fantastic. I've been bringing my two kids to the gym (now ages 6 and 4) for the past two years, and they love it. Tons of activities keep them busy while I'm sweating away. And, I can't forget to mention the awesome smoothie bar. Great way to cap off a workout! read more

Over the years, I've been a member of several gyms, and so far Fitness World is my favorite. THe location is ideal; there is a good variety of equipment and it's fairly well--maintained; the staff are nice and helpful without being too pushy; the bathrooms and showers are clean and well-kept; and the prices are decent. I agree with other reviewers that longer hours on the weekend would be fantastic. I didn't give them a 5 only because they do have some older, fraying equipment and the WiFi can be spotty. read more

I recently moved to a different part of the city, and boy was it difficult to find a new gym that lived up to my great experience at Fitness World. All of the staff were friendly and helpful. The facility was clean and machines are plentiful and well maintained. I also really enjoyed the fact that it was always busy enough to feel a community vibe at the gym but never so full that it impeded on the progress of your workout. I've been a member for most of this gym's operating years. For the most part, I really enjoy it. A big plus is the childcare. To have my kids cared for there while I workout is part of what keeps me sane. For over 6 months now I've been taking Kettlebell Circuit with Ben. That is one tough class. First class hurt for a week. But I keep coming back because it is so challenging. I'd never push myself that hard. I also love Ben's boxing class. It isn't as much fun as a prior teacher's class which was more of a dance type cardiobox, but it is challenging and a great workout. Ben's music choices aren't always my favorite, but that can be the case with any teacher. read more
