I've followed reviews for this restaurant for at least two years and finally made the 90 minute trip from Atlanta to Athens to see what all the reviews are about. Parking was easy. Service was good, but our wait person was a bit over-the-top. Food was good and they had a number of nice options. I know the menu changes daily, but the menu changed from our reading it posted at the door to our reading it at our table. There are many wonderful restaurants in the Atlanta metro area that I feel are equivalent to Five & Ten so I won't drive out to Athens just for dinner. In fact, Kitchen Six is better and it is only a 15 minute drive for me. read more

We had a birthday dinner last Tuesday after receiving recommendations from other students at UGA and reading good reviews. The restaurant had a unique ambiance, it was like an old home converted to a restaurant. There was ample parking behind the building. We found that wait staff very friendly and and professional. The dinners we ordered were the Cobia small and dinner size plates, each prepared differently. I had the ramen special. The dinners had terrific presentation. After each of us a chance to sample our food we quickly realized there was something off with the flavor and odor. The best I can describe is that of a bad fish stock used on all three plates. We are generally not picky and easy to please. We paid our bill and left. I honestly think they just had an off night. read more

We WERE regulars. Our friends were regular customers. Now, we finding ourselves looking elsewhere when we want a fine dining experience. Five & Ten was THE premier restaurant in Athens Georgia, but the quality of the main dishes is inconsistent at best. We have returned a few times, always thinking that the last time was an aberration, and THIS time will be better. But it wasn't. We have heard that there is a regular turnover of chefs, and the owner is an absentee boss. Perhaps this explains the inconsistency in past and current quality. Regardless, I wish this restaurant could regain its stature as the extraordinary dining experience it used to be. read more

Really disappointing for the price. Food was average to poor. Had the ribeye and thought if ordered a tiny steak salad with all the leafy vegetables on the plate. My date ordered the catfish and the way it was cooked, its texture was like an oyster. When you hear so many accolades, you expect a wow experience, just wasn't impressed. What to say? Overall, it's pretty good. My date and I had potato gnocchi, tonkatsu ramen and vegetable stew. The potato gnocchi was pretty good, a little heavy handed on the salt, but overall pretty good. The vegetable stew was delicious, good complexity, depth and flavor. Wished it was a little warmer since its so cold out today. Love the crunchiness of the vegetable and the change of texture from the duck. What made the place receive a 3 stars is the ramen. It was not good at all. They say don't judge the book by its cover, well, they are right. It was beautifully presented but then I saw there's kimichi in the ramen, like what? Also the meat in it seems to be cured and really salty and fatty. This is a Japanese dish (i mean, yea, I understand fusion, but this is not good fusion. Japanese, Korean and southern?). So, that's the first oops, next is the fact that the broth itself was terrible and inedible. It was overly salty with no complexity. Broth is easy, throw in a few bones let it simmer (for hours), but this broth was not thick and lackluster. Following, the egg was cold. Shouldn't it be at least warm? What really bothered me is the fact that this is the special. I thought it was awful and so did my date. I feel like I've had better ramen at half the cost. I mean, I understand this is Athens but there should still be a standard. So, please have real Japanese ramen before advertising. Try Shoya from Atlanta, it's half the cost and delicious. I know it is harsh, but the truth hurts bro. So, overall it is 3 stars because of the ramen. It could've been so much better. Try harder next time? The other things we had was delicious and the service was wonderful, so was the restaurant, but it's about the food ultimately. read more

I don't see what they hype is surrounding this place, the food was good but it was bland. I give it 2 stars because it was obvious that they use high quality fresh ingredients. This place is way over priced for what you get. My wife and I ended going through a drive through after we left because we dropped $85 and still weren't full. Overall disappointment. I've eaten my way through almost all of Athens yet the two spots I had yet to hit until recently were the national and 5&10. I still haven't had the national but in my mind 5&10 doesn't live up to the hype as being one of Athens top two dining experiences. The food is good yet for the price you pay it was not worth the experience. The mashed potatoes I ordered were lukewarm and while everything else was good nothing was stellar. The best part of the meal were the pimento cheese snackies with bacon jam marmalade. The environment is nice and location is right along milledge but it left me searching and wondering what makes this one of the top two places to eat in the city. read more

Definitely special occasion price point with out of the ordinary dishes. Enjoyed every bite of the smoked pork chop with crispy Brussels sprouts leaves. Appetizer of fried chicken skins which were even better than they sounded. Not impressed with the south side fizz cocktail, but nice glass of wine. We had an excellent evening here tonight, celebrating my birthday! We started with the Caeser, which was luscious. I then had the pork loin, with superb roasted beets, and my husband had the piemeal bacon. Both awesome! The cocktails were lovely, and they had a good wine selection. We will be back!!! read more

This was defintely in the top for best dining experiences. My table of four was very impressed by both the food and the service. Our server was helpful when needed and not overbearing. The food was tasty and we loved the atmosphere of the renovated house turned restaurant. Hugh Acheson is one of my favorite chefs and his southern food with modern and Asian influences works so well. My husband and I had an AWESOME experience with our Freshman son at 5&10 two weekends ago. The food was phenomenal, as was the porch atmosphere. Best of all was our server, Alec, who is now an honorary member of our family. Sometimes a server detracts, sometimes is just there, and every once in a while really adds to the joie de vivre. I am very sensitive to gluten and I went to 5 & 10 because I thought it was a farm-to-table restaurant. To be positioned as an upscale restaurant, I was very disappointed that 5 & 10 did not clearly mark gluten free items on their menu. This restaurant definitely offers a variety of interesting foods, but has not embraced gluten free health concerns. It would be nice to have an entree or two that were clearly marked gluten free. The waitress said the kitchen could alter "some" items on the menu to be gluten free, but what a hassle for the consumer! If you are a farm-to-table restaurant, is gluten free that hard? Athens really needs more health conscious restaurants. To claim to be such a foodie town, Athens is way behind forward-thinking towns like Asheville, NC or Hilton Head, SC. - where there are a plethora of high-end, health conscious restaurants willing to embrace consumers' needs and wants. The only high-end restaurant I have found to consider current consumer trends is The National. The food at The National is healthy, delicious, and GF items are clearly marked on their menu. I am a consumer who is willing to pay for GF options - whatever it takes to be able to ENJOY a meal without sacrificing my health. read more

We visited this restaurant twice while traveling in Athens. Once in their old location, and again in their new location. Both times we had amazing meals. This place focuses on local ingredients, which means high quality, fresh ingredients are the norm. This translates into delicious savory dishes and seasonal treats for dessert. They also have a fantastic wine list. The folks at 5&10 impressed even this (sometimes) picky New Yorker. The atmosphere, cocktails, and cheese board (asher blue cheese was incredible) was excellent but 3 of 5 of our entre dishes were subpar, especially for the very high price of these dishes. It's a nice place, but whoever is making the ramen for ramen night does not have a clue about how to make ramen. Maybe if they went to Japan to apprentice for a bit, they could understand, but for now steer clear of the ramen. #1 problem - it was served lukewarm. Ramen is only served piping hot. To write this off as creative is just an excuse for an epic fail. #2 - Those were not ramen noodles. More like repurposed spaghetti - and yes there is a big difference. #3 allegedly it had kimchi in it, but the only thing that might have been construed as kimchi were some pickle chunks floating in the bottom of the tepid broth. Then there were the shiitake soaked in vinegar and sugar ( I presume). Sorry that might be creative but not good for ramen. Nor the large slices of pickled radish (not daikon but some kind of giant red radish). Creative but not good ramen. The best thing was the pork belly (served on the side). I liked that. Traditionally ramen will have pork slices in the soup. Oh yeah and this was supposed to be either miso or shoyu based broth, but it tasted like neither. More like a watery nothing. Any street vendor in Japan will serve superior ramen to this disaster. read more

Probably the best night out my husband and I have had. When we first walked in, the hostess was warm and directed us to the bar while we waited for our table. The drinks we ordered were unique and well made, and our bartender was quick and friendly. Once we got to our table, the waiter (John) pulled out all the stops to make us feel welcome. Aside from the fabulous food, our waiter really made our experience there enjoyable. The food was exquisite, the atmosphere lovely, and the service unbeatable. Everything you could want in a restaurant. Price point is high, but the quality of the establishment is well worth paying for; as a place to celebrate a special occasion or have nice date night, this is now our go-to. read more

We four enjoyed an evening here last night! We sipped a st Estef French red that was exceptional, as were the pickles, and the rabbit ravioli small plate. Service was exceptional! The cuisine we tried: 14 oz steak, pork chop, lingcod, radish n turnip salad, cheese n vinegar rice n arugula salad, the best dishes were the steak n pork w a close third the rabbit ravioli. We cannot recommend the turnip, or the cod. The carrot roasted side was warming but undercooked. This wasn't crisp tender....it was hard. We skipped dessert and left feeling vaguely this place is running out of special spot to less due to some poorly prepared dishes and lack of fresh and hot off the skillet. Please chef, warm the plates more and the food should steam w heat. The rabbit agnolotti, SHOULD be sitting on a chill shelf and placed in a steamer or boiling bath and come out so when you slip your fork in the steam escapes. Lukewarm is not nice. No cook should allow the plating to happen unless it can be served hot. And a steak surely could have a hot side that complements steak, hard carrots don't help ...lukewarm at best. Order carefully n encourage the waiter to talk to chef about HEAT. Improve your steak knives they grind meat, not good for cutting. read more

This is a beautiful restaurant with a lovely atmosphere, great service, and thoughtfully sourced and prepared food. However, if you are plant-based the options are less than stellar. Upon request the chef prepared a vegetable plate for us which had a few seasonal vegetables. While they were delicious, it was not a complete meal and it certainly wasn't worth the price...which you won't find out until the check comes. I would love to see a plant-based option on the menu that includes some sort of grain, legume, or even potatoes and mushrooms, to make a filling and satisfying complete meal. I am baffled why a talented chef can't seem to come up with something better. Seems like a lack of effort to me. read more

We've been visiting this restaurant 3-4 times per year since it opened forever ago in the old location. The food over the past few years- even with the new head chef- has become increasingly disappointing. We try to spend every New Years Eve here for the special 4 course menu. The service for our New Years Eve visit last year was not at all up to par and nothing like any of our previous visits. Our second course for the entire table was skipped and we were served the third course after the first. That course was taken away after we informed them of the mistake, and the second course was served. Then instead of receiving our third course next the servers brought out second course again! We were perplexed and disappointed , especially since the servers seemed dismayed and irritated when we informed the them of the errors they made. If our group of 6 is spending over $1k on a meal, the service coming along with that price tag should be seamless. I really want to love this place again as much as we did years ago. I feel like every time we visit there's just a few minor changes made to the same menu that's been served for years now. I would thoroughly enjoy seeing an overhauled menu to make this place worthy of frequency visits again. read more

We went with another couple for a night out away from the kids. I had heard about this restaurant from a friend at work and decided to give it a try. The food was fantastic and the service was great as well. They had a nice selection of oysters On the Half-Shell which are one of my favorites and they were spectacular. As a special that evening they had bone-in pork belly with some type of maple glaze that was ridiculous. Haven't eaten here in awhile and was looking forward to the changes in the menu. The special starter of grilled lamb Flatbread was flavorful and just enough to set the stage for the main course. Frogmore Stew was a bit more sophisticated than typical Frogmore stew. Flavorful with adequate seafood. The pork chop preparation was simple but may have been the best pork chop I have ever been served. The collards were a perfect side. The bright green color, texture and combination of flavors were a nice compliment to the pork. The cream Brule with Muscatine jam was a perfect ending to the meal. The only disappointment was the flourless chocolate cake- exceedingly dry and old tasting. The apple compote and whipped cream could not revive it. Great wine pairings recommended by very competent and attentive staff. We will not wait so long to return. read more
