So far this is a great atmosphere and the happy hour vibe is definitely in this place! The happy hour Long Island tea was nice and I only had one. We ordered what shows on the pics below. Ok let's start with the center cut baby back ribs. I really never expect to be at a non bbq restaurant thinking the ribs are going to be all that anyway, so they were ok and tangy. The wife ordered the garlic lemon pepper wings and said she wanted it crispy but they were not crispy as ordered but she said they were still good. The fries were delicious as well. The server was busy but he was satisfactory. Overall I give this place four out of five for the switch around. read more

I don't know where to start because this was one of the best dining experiences I've had all year. Service was phenomenal, thank you RJ! We went early on a weekday evening and the place was half full. We both ordered the filet mignon, medium rare with 4 fried shrimp. For 30 bucks, the entree only comes with one side. Her steak was raw, all the shrimp were raw, my mashed potatoes were served cold, her Brussels sprouts were a mix of perfectly cooked and chewy raw. I went to 54 for the first time yesterday, and loved it! We had some drinks and shared several appetizers, which were delicious! The best part of the experience though, was the service! Great service at the bar. Club sandwich was delicious but went light on honey mustard and aioli on the side. Side grilled veggies were tasty that included mushrooms, brussel sprouts,red bell pepper, zucchini, squash, and asparagus. Would definitely order it again. Mimosa was top level juice/bubbles. We tried to go here a few weeks ago. Took a bit to be acknowledged by the hostess, but she sat us fairly quickly. Issue is, no waitstaff ever greeted us. We sat there for at least 10 minutes (it was busy but not super busy because I could see wait staff standing around in the back) sever wait staff passed by us an even spoke with tables around us, but no one ever greeted us. Not even to say "sorry I'll be with you in just a second" We finally just got up and walked out. Too many good places to eat in this city to put up with that BS Also, the place just felt kind of dirty and gross. Had high hopes for this place as the menu looks good. But we sat here for over 15 minutes. Our waitress didn't even acknowledge us and we had to go up to the hostess stand. It is so nice to see new restaurants in South Austin. This is a nice addition. The food is good, menu extensive, and the drinks appear to equally impressive. Missing is the level of service. The hostesses failed to acknowledge our presence for a period of time. Our server appeared to be poorly trained. There was little follow up other than putting food on the table. We were in mid-afternoon on a Sunday. It felt like the B team was working. We will return and hope for a bit of improvement. read more

Terrible food, terrible service. Party of seven, went to celebrate 2 birthdays! Some of us ordered coffee - they were out after the first cup, a restaurant that runs out of coffee, how does that happen? Some ordered margaritas, could not drink them. No one enjoyed their meals, the only good and edible items were the waffle fries and fried pickles. We saw the waitperson when taking our order and delivering food. We were never asked if we needed anything else. Since we could not drink anything water would have been nice. When it was time for the bill we had to ask the hostess to find our waitress, we could see the entire waitstaff in the back on their phones. We did not ask for refunds as we wanted to get out of there. It was a multiple birthday party, so we were planning on more coffee and dessert but were never asked and of course they had no coffee for an evening meal. read more

I've eaten here twice in the last week. Both times the food was delicious. The first time I had the chicken fried chicken lunch special. It was a chicken breast, breaded and fried rather than pieces of chicken. But it was well done and moist when I've been into it. The mashed potatoes were covered with a peppery white gravy. I also had the bbq beans as a side, which were well executed. Also had a strawberry margarita that was pretty good as well. The server I had this time hadn't quite adapted to the technology they were using to take orders. The next time I had the rattlesnake pasta with just chicken on it. It was a gigantic dish, that was enough for two meals. It's spicy and has a strong cumin flavor. The surfer had this trip was well informed and made some good recommendations. As far as the look and feel, I believe it's an upscale brewpub vibe. It's got a giant ceiling fan. That's about 10 feet across in one area TVs that line the walls to cover the sports that are on a see-through area to the keg room. read more

We sat for 15 min and no one came to see us for drinks or food. I saw at least 4 servers at the bar watching football. Another server went to see a table for 2 that was near us. She knew them because she ate some of their nachos and stood to chat. We were in the patio area. I went to the Hostess desk and told her we were leaving and why with a few choice words I told her to share with the Manager. Not the hostess's fault, I expressed my feelings to her. read more

Second time here, and second disappointment. Had an obviously handicapped person with us, but the hostess still made us walk past MANY clean, empty tables to the far end of the room. She was so far ahead of us that I would have had to shout to get her attention, so we followed her. When I asked why she made us walk that far, she asked if we wanted to sit somewhere else (no comment). Every other restaurant offers us seating with the shortest walking distance as possible, but Five Four was oblivious. It was mid-afternoon, and not busy, but still took 25 minutes to get beer. It actually got served a minute after the food, which was served lukewarm. I asked how long the food had been sitting out and she asked if I wanted to talk to a manager. Never mind. It was Happy Hour with reduced prices on appetizers, but the check did not reflect the lower prices. We brought it to her attention, and she corrected it. Would not recommend. I ordered the kids' flank steak, for my baby, which was not only rock hard but also had a disturbing smell that resembled something rotten. It reminded me of a smell like 48-hour-old period blood on a pad--absolutely unappetizing. There was no way I would feed that to my child. I ordered the ribeye for myself, priced at $29, and while it was pink inside, it was incredibly dry and hard to the touch. Not sure how they managed that combination, but it wasn't enjoyable. I brought the issue to the waitress's attention, and she was kind enough to feel bad about it. She offered to have me speak with a manager, but with a fussy baby in tow, I declined. I did, however, urge her to notify the cooks and the manager to quality-check the kids' steaks because serving something like that is unacceptable. Despite the poor food quality, I still paid for it, and also left a 20% tip because the waitress was pleasant. Writing this review to warn others to be cautious and hope the restaurant takes better care in the future. read more

Im also a recovering alcoholic so for me to have to taste liquor in my wifes drink had me very upset I understand this is a draft house we went to try out a new food experience to see what the quality of food they had. Also i over heard the waitress telling the manager that my wife did not mention it would be a mocktail but that was the first word to come out my wifes mouth and she also pointed to it on the menu while mentioning "mocktail paloma with Tajin on rim" After the fact of the manager approached our table he asked if everything was okay I explained to him the situation he can tell i was very upset and wanted to make things right if my wife had drank a alcoholic beverage there wouldn't have been no fixing the situation so i paid for the Caesar salad with a $20 bill and left without saying anything. I had to ask 4 times to turn on the heater, the waitress tried to take our order before the entire party arrived and disappeared when we were ready.
