I ordered my steak rare to medium rare and it came every bit of medium well. Not a single person asked how everything was. When the food came we asked for steak sauce and salad dressing. At which point a different waiter noticed our drinks were empty and asked what we were drinking. Then proceeded to do nothing about it. 10 mins later our waitress Aurora finally came by again, no steak sauce, no dressing, and still no drinks. She then proceeded to blame other people without so much as an apology. Not once did she apologize. Even after I sat with an empty drink for a second time for 10 mins. Then once everything was done she hovered waiting for us to pay the check that she didn't even think to get a discount on. I used to love comimg here, I was here every lunch and sometimes dinner 3-4 times a week. I'm a nurse and choose to come here because of thier convient hours for us. But, ever since this current management has taken over, you can definitely tell the lack of service and favoritism towards certain customers. I was here on a monday night around 9. Wow, am I impressed. Let's start with Juanita (Brianna) - what a great bartender. Very attentive, very professional (excellent customer service). As for the Food - the Gyro was surprisingly excellent with me finally finding a tzatziki sauce I completely loved. The Wife had the Tilapia sandwich, also prepared very well. Came here for takeout driving through the city got a salad, upgraded my meal to have steak. My steak was RAW not medium rare. It was raw. Also, specifically requested utensils and didn't get anything, which kinda sucks when you're staying in a hotel, luckily I had a spoon leftover from another meal. We stopped here while traveling from Denver East. The food and service were both excellent. We had fried mushrooms to start and they were delicious! One son had the ribs and chicken tender with fries and Mac and chs. He said he wished he could eat the ribs everyday. Other son had the rattlesnake pasta with no spicy seasoning and he said it was the best pasta he has ever had. This is a real statement coming from Mr pasta lover. Hubby had the jambalaya and also said it was good. Not the best he has ever had, but he would for sure order again. I had the soup (potato) and salad, and then ate off everyone else's plates. Our server, Amber, was very attentive and the manager even came over to make sure everything was ok. Great customer service. Have been a regular customer of this restaurant for a long time. The product has always been fantastic. The waitress was clearly having an off night and we were understanding. The dining experience went downhill when the night manager (Mark) became accusatory toward a member in our group. It was shocking since we were weekly customers. I told Mark that we were regulars and he said "I don't care." As a business owner, it's hard to find good help. Clearly 54th Street's corporate team took a shortcut in hiring Mark. I had lunch here 1.27.20. I had the Bacon cheeseburger with smoked gouda all the vegetables on the pretzel bun waffle frys and gringo dip. By far they have the best waffle frys and the gringo drip is amazing! If you dont like the gringo dip theirs something wrong with you! They have a pretty solid burger! I ordered med well it was cooked quite good so good I didn't even put any mayonnaise just the vegetables! When you can eat a burger without any condiments and taste the actual burger instead of the condiments you've done your job! Literally the worst service i've had in a while. Felt completely ignored siting at that BAR. My "servers" were in front of me the whole time and they couldn't even ask me if i wanted something. Although this is a chain restaurant. I find this location in particular a nice restaurant to sit and eat after shopping. I always sit at the bar and waited on in a reasonable amount of time. I like when they introduce both servers and when they are busy providing drinks for all tables in the restaurant, they find the time to come over to you and ask if you need anything else. Not dog friendly and clearly unorganized / under trained. I thought I would meet a friend in this vicinity so I called to inquire about their outdoor seating. I specified on the phone that I was asking if I could get a seat outdoors with my dog for tonight. I was told yes. Upon arrival, I again asked to get a table outside for 2+ a dog and was advised it would be a half hour, no big so I provided my number as I was standing next to my dog. Then I waited outside, and told them I would since I had a dog. I later received the text that my table was ready and then was advised to hold on, while the same person who took my name earlier went to get a manager. The manager came and told me to leave as I could not sit outside with my dog. Btw, my dog was entirely silent, calm, 5lbs, and was in a stroller being extremely well behaved. If they had just told me initially, or even when I put my name in this frustration could have been entirely avoided. I will never go here again, even without the dog. read more

The only reason that I'm giving this place 1 star is the server we had was exceptional!! As for the hostesses and the manager, not so much. We arrived at a busy time and we were told it was going to be an hour wait. As we sat waiting for 55 min there was 1 high top table in the bar that sat empty the entire time we waited. When our name was finally called we were sat at that lonely empty high top that was vacant our entire wait. When the manager came by, we inquired why they hadn't seated anyone at that table, his reply was "nobody wanted to sit here".... well if they had maybe offered it to others who were waiting I'm sure someone would have taken it. It was not like it went unnoticed to him because he was too busy laughing and joking around with the two girls at the hostess stand. My experience at the 54th street was TERRIBLE! We are very mad at the manager that runs 54th in Independence, MO. The manager was the rudest Ass hole I have ever met. We sat at a booth and we asked for a sling for our 3 month old and they didn't bring us one. I had to grab a sling myself and when I did the manager came over all mad. He told me I could not have a sling at my booth. He told us we could move to a table or leave. He was very rude and said it wasn't his problem that we couldn't have a sling by the booth. Tables around us were very mad at him for the way he talked to us. Another table told us we should leave because of how he talked to us but we were so hungry that we decided to sit and eat. The whole time we sat and ate the manager was giving us dirty looks and whispering to the servers. We will never come back to this 54th street again! read more

Came here to eat dinner and service was poor. We asked for fried pickles and then were told they didn't sell those, when clearly it was on the menu. We ordered our food and everyone besides the server came to the table. Me and my family got our meals, one was missing a side and one was given the wrong side, also previously the server said she would have to charge us extra for ranch . About 15 minutes passed by and the server never returned to the table. We told her about the issues and she brought the asparagus out AFTER we got the bill and paid, along with our food already boxed up at the table. This place is packed, but don't let it fool you. The food is not that good. At least the 54th street sliders and fries aren't that good. They're $1.75 on happy hour which is good. I got three but only ate two. Not enough onions. Buns weren't toasted and were too chewy. Meat didn't have much flavor. Fries texture was good but didn't taste that great. The kids cheese and mac looks like it came from a Kraft box. Apple sauce is from Motts or something and comes in a prepackaged container. The steak and cheese wasn't bad. The peppers have a nice roasted flavor but the sandwich wasn't creamy at all steak had a pepper flavor which wasn't too bad. They have $5.99 appetizers (some aren't included) but you have to buy a $2.00 drink to get the discount so it kind of negates the discount. The men's room smelled strongly of urine. Love their happy hour specials. Watch out for crappy servers though. My sister and I came in just after 9pm on a Sunday. We weren't entirely sure if they had the late night happy hour on Sundays so we asked our server, Allison, when she took our drink order. She just stared at us in silence for a good minute before finally saying "Uh yeah if it's after 9... I just don't know what time it is." It just seemed like she decided right then that we weren't going to order much and tip poorly on top of that and wrote us off. Wrong on both assessments. My sister ordered the waffle fries with gringo dip. We decided to share an order of pretzels with cheese. I ordered my go-to the Baja Biggie Basket (taquitos, chips, and gringo dip) and a side of loaded mashed potatoes. And we both got drinks. The food comes out and everything looks good except I was given a Combo Biggie Basket instead, which comes with half the taquitos and a sort-of southwest egg roll that I do not care for. I pointed this out to her and instead of the standard "sorry, there must have been a mix up" I expected (as I'm sure confusing the two similarly named apps somewhere on the journey from the table to the kitchen is a common occurrence), she told me that I was wrong, and preceded to explain the difference between the two dishes as if I were stupid and hadn't pointed it out in the first place. Finally I was given my correct order. And then I was given the itemized bill, which was around $25. I gave her my card and she came back with the credit card receipt, but it said my total was $50, double what the itemized check said. When I showed the waitress this she immediately blamed another table for being needy and distracting her from running my card correctly. She came back with another receipt with the correct total and told me "everything should be fine, since your card isn't charged until we completely close the check". I left her a decent tip, despite the subpar service, and left. When I checked my bank account the next day, I had a pending charge for the incorrect amount and had had enough. Called the restaurant and shared the entire experience with the manager who apologized profusely and informed me that the server was considered a "senior staff member" and would be spoken to before her next shift because of her attitude and failure to involve a manager when she messed up my check (felt kinda bad about that one). But everything with my account was fixed quickly, so there's that. I'll just be extra careful to check the bill next time I decide to eat there. read more

After a few visits here, I will say it's a decent spot. Most recently, my wife, mother-in-law and I sat in the bar area to catch the fourth quarter and OT of NFC playoff game and get some dinner. Our server was friendly, efficient, and kept their sodas filled. Food came out quickly. My wife and mother-in-law both had salads which were huge and, I heard, quite tasty. I got a sirloin with baked potato and "garlic bread" - the steak was about what I expected for the low price, in that it was fine but not great. It was cooked quite well, however. The baked potato was fine. The garlic bread, which was really just a strip of bread with garlic butter on it, was not pleasant. The drinks menu is pretty good. I swear 2015 must be the year of the chains for me. I've eaten at this location twice now as well as both Zona Rosa and Gladstone once each. I'd say Indep is my favorite out of the select ones I've tried. My last visit a week ago really enforced it. I unfortunately did not catch my servers name and I'll blame it on the strawberry long islands which is something I also hardly ever order, do I have a fever? He was a middle aged Latino male on the patio. He was AMAZING and even my date agreed. He really went the extra step to give recommendations on beers and drinks, gave us ample time to decide on menus when we went in indecisive but not enough to feel forgotten, make small talk naturally without having to try, and was quick with the check. 54th is one of those solid chains where you can do practically anything. Watch the game, take advantage of a good lunch special, enjoy a meal on the patio, hit the drinks with coworkers, or take grandma. Favorite things of mine include the four play appetizer (which consists of waffle fries, buffalo wings, chicken quesadilla, and your choice of Wisconsin cheese bites or mozzie sticks served with that GRINGO DIP!), southwest tortilla wrap, and their burgers. Universally I've noticed that drinks always arrive pretty slow across the board. This would be my one gripe. read more

I've lived in KC almost all my life and I've never been to 54th Street Grill & Bar. Probably because they don't have one in Jo Co (I think maybe there used to be...) Anyway, was in Independence one day on a trek to Old Time Pottery and went in search of food. I had a burger and it was solid. I don't know that I'd call it the best burger I've ever had but it was pretty darn good and really hit the spot. The fries were good too. Been a long time customer of 54th street. However the customer service tonight from the server and from the evening manager was poor compared to what you might expect . The manager identified himself as Mark. He was staring at our table for an extended period of time making all of our guests extremely uncomfortable. This is a restaurant known for excellence, but this was clearly a bad experience that did irreparable damage to the image of 54th Street in Independence. 54th Street is consistently good. We've been dining at 54 for a few years now, and have visited several of their locations across the metro, and I can't recall ever having a bad experience or bad food. They're usually busy for dinner and you might have to wait a while (20-30min) for a table, and on at least two occasions we've had slow service due to how busy they've been. Our last visit was a busy night, and the server disappeared on us for a bit, but some one else came around and took care of our order. The setting is similar to most casual dining restaurants, as far as ambiance (very laid back and slightly loud) and layout. They have purposefully tacky decor, overloaded with vintage signs, posters, and memorabilia. They offer a very varied menu, with a large variety of burgers, and sandwiches, they also offer steaks, pastas, salads and one-offs like their tacos and the gyro. I've always enjoyed their food, I've only tried their burgers, and sandwiches and have liked all of them so far. I wasn't impressed by their dessert offerings though, and after trying their chocolate cake once have opted to skip dessert on my subsequent visits. read more

Been eating here a lot in the past few weeks and it's pretty good. The prices are reasonable and the food and drinks are pretty good. Only one true vegan option (veggie burger ordered with no cheese or aoli sauce) - but they do have salads which you can modify too. Plenty of vegetarian options and a long list of great sides including different steamed veggies. The drink and beer list is extensive and there is a great bar area to sit at and enjoy the big game on one of their MANY giant screen TV's. The wait staff has been hit or miss, but I've also been in there during some VERY busy times. Our server the other night, Ashley, was amazing! She was totally on the ball, laughed at a bunch of my stupid dad-jokes, and made sure we had everything we wanted.
