It was 9:50 PM, 10 minutes before closing. Normally, I wouldn't go in to order and do that to the poor crew, who have already cleaned and stocked everything and, pretty much, just want to get the heck out of Dodge. But I was on a road trip, had been driving for eight hours and had eight more hours to go. The gas station I stopped at smelled like really good spicy pizza but it had been away a couple hours earlier. Having had nothing to eat put somewhat healthy snacks and caffeine, I realized I had better grab something quick or I would need to wait for breakfast to get anything decent. The gas station attendant told me about Five Guys being open, across the street. I raced over and felt guilty walking in. I apologized but all three of the crew members cheerfully replied that it wasn't a problem at all...WITH ENTHUSIASM!!! The girl who worked the grill joked that it was great because the grill had been so dirty enough that it really needed to be cleaned again. I could see the grill. It was sparkling clean. The girl who took my order cheerfully gave suggestions and we decided on a very custom sandwich. She recommended a couple of grilled jalapenos on it because it would taste amazing with the melted cheese and bacon. And did it ever! The hand cut fries were just as awesome. The guy working the fryer and the two girls happily chatted with me while I was waiting for my order, as they continued to work. Amazing. I don't usually take the time to sit and write out a review of a burger joint, especially when I have a long drive ahead of me, but this team ROCKED. They truly seemed to enjoy each other's company and mine. I can honestly say that I have never been made to feel so welcomed at ANY restaurant or business when walking in minutes before closing. I don't mind spending money on a good meal but spending nearly $15 on a burger and fries while not being waited on at a table just bothers me. I've once been in your store, looked at the board, and left because of it. The Cajun fries here are among my favorite fries out there! The burgers are good and fresh. I don't get all the high marks/reviews here. Sure, it's a decent burger, but 5 stars? No, sir. It's typical burger meat. I mean, you can get this same burger at local Gyros stands, like George's Gyro Spot in Chesterton, and even that double burger was bigger than this double burger (and cheaper to boot). But I didn't come here to talk about George's. Again, the burgers are decent, fast food/old style burgers, and they're good, but it's not the best hamburger I've had. I guess if I was going to wait a long time, I would care about the peanuts. Oh, you can tell me where my potatoes are from today? Great. Can you tell me that they're organic? How about the beef? Grass-fed? No? You can get a lot of cool stuff on the burgers, and that's nice. They give you lots of fries, and you can get them with "cajun" spices, and that's cool. Fries are decent. Also distracting is all the positive reviews on the wall. They even have positive reviews in the bathrooms...from last century. Once again, I just don't get the big deal here. Man what a day I've had. I was just at five guys for 6 hours. Nonstop eating drinking and loving. I ate 106 patties all with only mayo. I had 146 orders of fries also with mayo. 96 vanilla milkshakes with mayo mixed in. Life has never been better. read more

People complain about the price but if you go to Arby's or really anywhere else, you spend just as much if not more than you would at 5 guys. Amazing hamburgers. Fresh, juicy, delicious, piping hot. I can make a darn good burger at home on my grill, but these guys have me beat. The cost for a regular burger and regular fry and a water is $10, but definitely worth it. You're getting quality. You'll also have to wait 5 minutes for your food to be done as well since it's made to order. No warming trays here or anything. The staff is very friendly and engaging and make your trip a fun one. There's not many places I eat at where I cannot finish my food, this is one of them. Today, after eating a regular bacon burger (two patties, 3 strips of bacon) and a regular fry, I could not finish my fries. A regular fry is basically a cup full of fries and 25% of a brown paper bag full of fries as overflow. The fries here are a love/hate relationship. They're potatoes sliced with the skin on and fried in a healthier alternative peanut oil. They're not crispy like Burger King and a bit soggy which I like. If you have the time to wait a few minutes for a delicious burger and willing to spend a "premium" on an amazing burger, you won't be disappointed. I highly suggest getting a regular burger and a small fry. The regular sized is just too much for most people. read more

I've heard so much hype from people over the years about how good this places burgers are and after finally making my 1st stop here I can honestly say, that's exactly what it was is hype. The burger was okay, but nothing fantastic. First off, it wasn't even that hot. When I get cheese on a burger I expect it to be melted. The cheese slices were ice cold! Same deal with the cheese dog I ordered. I expected melted cheese and it was just one cold slice of a Kraft single wrapped around it! I understand that a lot of people may disagree with me on this next one, but when I order bacon on a burger, I like the soft bacon. To me crispy bacon is for breakfast, not for a burger. Another disappoinment of this place is their scarce menu selection. Where's the specialty burgers at?! That's why I much rather eat at Meatheads or Schoops than Five Guys. Another thing Meatheads and Schoops has that Five Guys lacks is chilli cheese fries. I haven't even started in on how expensive this place is. A burger, a dog, and a drink put me out almost $20 bucks! I'm always willing to give a place a second chance, but if I lived by that old adage; You only get one chance to make a good impression, I wouldn't be going back that's for sure. read more

I order Five guys every couple weeks using their website and it's always a pleasure. I don't have to wait in line, just walk up to the pick up area, tell them my name and they hand me my bag of food. Food is always hot and delicious! I love all the different items you could put on your burger/hot dog and the fact that everyone working there seems genuinely nice is a little mind blowing. They really seem like they all enjoy working there and working with each other. Love five guys burgers. We tried the one in West Lafayette earlier this year and were really excited when we heard one was opening here. We haven't eaten in the dining room yet, but I've taken advantage of the online ordering process twice. It's pretty great. I placed the order about half hour before I wanted to pick up, paid online. It's nice, lets you customize everything. Came in for pickup, was able to skip the long line. Food was fresh, ready, prepared exactly as requested. I give Five Guys five stars. You can make a burger about half million different ways, free peanuts and the soda machine was pretty cool. The meal did cost about $21.50 for two people. If you are in for a good fast food meal then come here. I have eaten here before. The thing I remember is that one order of fries is for 2 people or so. The sandwiches have a lot of items to add even the vegetarian option. When the place opened they had one of the new Coke fancy machines. A clever concept to quick and efficient and great tasting food. Limited menu, burgers, fries, kid stuff and hot dogs. You get to watch the food being made. They throw a patty on the grill for every head they count walking in the door to speed up the cooking process. It all comes down to individual taste buds and preference. You can't rate a restaurant on the pure fact that you yourself like crunchier fries or no skin left on the potato before its cooked. That is unfair to them on their overall qualities. The food is fresh, the fries are cooked in peanut oil, and you can't get these fresh qualities at Mc'ds. If your on a diet this is the place to splurge! Don't get a little burger, the double patty is way, way more satisfying! They give you a ton of fries and they have peanuts for you to snack on while you wait. The volunteer tax preparers at United Way purchase their lunch from local businesses throughout the tax season, So that is approximately 10 lunches a day for 40 days. Our secretary deals with the restaurants placing the order And then going and picking the orders up and bringing them back. For the first time we ordered from the Valparaiso Five Guys restaurant. Our secretary ask If the persons name could be placed on the outside of the paper sack as the orders were filled. This is something that we typically request and all restaurants we have frequented thus far have been willing to do. For some reason we were told this was not something that the staff at Five Guys could do. Our secretary was told that the only way the orders could be individualized was they would write a number on the wrapper of the sandwich. So then Each individual sack had to be searched just to see what number was written on the sandwich underneath all the french fries that were spilled into the bag. I hope you can visualize what a difficult and messy task this proved to be to the point that our secretary ask us to not order again from the Five Guys restaurant. read more

First trip ever to Five Guys! We got there really early (first customers) and let them know we had never been before. Staff was extremely helpful in explaining their menu to us. Both my husband and I were greatly satisfied with our burgers and the fries were also quite good!! I am not fond of getting my own drinks... but that's just me.
