This place was good. I liked it a little more than my hubby, but the flavors were a little more "my thing". The staff were helpful, but honestly the descriptions could have been a little better, or maybe a sample list of what might go well together. The staff were great, but I am a bit of a foodie and didn't really know what stuff was, which made it a little harder. I would go back in a heartbeat to get their yummy bowl of food. I liked the coconut sauce a lot, and the spicy stuff they added at the end was yummy too. I thought the cheese roll would be better so I got an extra one, but it didn't have much flavor. read more

This place intrigued me as I walked down Main Street from the very crowded Montana Ale House. If you like Chipotle, you will certainly enjoy this establishment as a fast casual eatery. Disappointed the medium bowl option was discontinued. Who thought limiting customer options was such a great idea? The small bowl is too small, more like an appetizer. The large bowl is too much food. I mainly come here because it's reasonably priced in a town saturated with overpriced or unaffordable eating establishments. I really dislike the rice. It's pretty awful. The meat, sauces and add-ons are flavorful so it almost makes up for the mass produced tasting rice. Like school cafeteria rice is the best way to describe it. Without the affordable, and perfect amount of food, option of the medium bowl, I'm less inclined to return now. read more

I'm a little torn writing this review, truth to tell. Or to put it another way, It would be more accurate to write two - one for good days, one for the rest, simply because the quality vacillates quite dramatically. To be very clear, when its good Five on Black is one of the best deals on Main - cheap, fast, fresh, and absolutely delightful, with a nice atmosphere to boot - and if I could I would give the good days ten stars and two extras, just in delight at how good the experience is. Its also worth noting that no matter what, the sauces and condiments are always spot on and delicious, and the flavor of the meat is also always stellar. However, for some reason the portions and other ingredients (carbs in particular) vacillates dramatically. Some days the rice is perfect, the cheese buns are fluffy, chewy little delights (seriously, the Pao de Cijo dished out here is absolutely killer when its good, and one of my favorite things on Main), and there's a generous helping of protein to tie everything together. On others, the rice is undercooked and disgustingly gritty, the cheese buns weird little glue pucks (often scorched on the bottom, for good measure), and the protein feels like an afterthought. The protein I can haggle - though why I can get a generous portion one day then need haggle for less even with an extra helping tacked on the next escapes me - but the underdone rice and glue pucks routine is off putting and borderline unpalatable. The portion issue does seem to vary by the day and time, but there seems to be no rhyme of reason to the sub-par carbs. So, in short, if its a good day and time this place is amazing - word to the wise, dinner seems to consistently deliver more balanced portions, and I'll give a shout out to the Thursday and Saturday evening crew, who are both charming, generous without fail, and have excellent taste in music to boot ;) - but if its an off day you'll probably wonder how the place stays open, and if you're like me and have eaten here often, you'll likely find yourself scratching your head at the proverbial moodswings. Odd, and a pity - the quality was more fonsistant when I first moved here two years ago, and I'd swing in more often these days for a quick bite if I could count on consistent quality... read more

This restaurant sports a fast-casual concept, not unlike Chipotle or its ilk. All portions are served in a bowl, perfect for diners on the go. The five-step menu is crafted to give the hungry diner a generous combination of pieces with which to construct a bowl and easy to read and understand. I chose a base of greens, with a topping of feijoada ( a savory Brazilian stew ), black beans, and a spicy chimichurri as a topping. The greens were indeed crisp as promised, providing a nice textural base. The stew was hearty and thick, with a generous meaty flavor. The chimichurri was spicy and refreshing. The beans were soft, with still a bit of "pop" to their skins, and did not impart much of their own flavor. In all, my dish had a good blend of flavors, starting with the savory stew and cooled down by the greens and the chunky tomato vinaigrette (akin to a pico de gallo) with which I also topped it. 5 on Black in Bozeman has been my go-to place for allergen free meals. The last 2 trips in there have been unusually disappointing. Even though I always go in just before the busy 12 o'clock rush, these last 2 times they haven't had all of the options available. There was an incomplete, less organized feel about the place. No greens, roasted vegetables or all of the protein options available. The next time no sweet potatoes or farofa! Hopefully it was just 2 unusual events and not a trend. read more

I'm no expert on Brazilian food so I'm not sure about how Brazilian the food it but the food is definitely delicious, nutritious and filling! It is similar to chipotle where you select a bowl of rice/salad or both that is topped with dressing/veggies/sides/choice of protein. They also have quite a few spicy sauces including what appeared to be there own and it is delicious. They also sell canned coconut water which I love. I wish I had this in my town - it's not expensive and really good! read more

It's a make-your-own bowl place. There are three sizes of bowls, all under $10, and every time I have left with a full appetite. When I refer it as a Brazilian "grill" place, which it really isn't a "grill", people tend to think if meat and not vegetarian friendly. I just want to say this place really does have variety for non-meat eaters! This food is healthy and fresh. The food is more on the spicy palette, so if you're not into spicy then choose carefully on what you order. The interior has a modern, simplistic, and open design. There are tables outside. This is my new go-to quick lunch/dinner place in downtown for a meal under $10. I really do recommend to try this place. read more

I have not been here in awhile and was disappointed by the return. The music was ridiculously loud and the employees were disengaged with customers. I ordered the beef but was very suspicious of the bright red meat that I got. Prices are okay for the amount of food but portions are inconsistent. I saw the server in front of me serve his customer twice as much meat... I think five on black needs to focus on their customers a bit more read more

I ordered a large meal and a medium meal, but evidently the guys didn't hear me correctly. I ended up with two large orders, and boy am I glad. Food was amazing. Food Hot. Fast service.
