Giving "Five Star" a solid five star after having several conversations with Kevin about my newly purchased house. I originally wanted a quote for some upgrades and repairs. Kevin transparently and honestly told me I was better off getting providence water contacted for repairing some of it which I appreciated. When my boiler and radiator were leaking, Kevin's crew came out fast to look at it. Ultimately took a little while to get everything fixed but the guys worked professionally and efficiently to get the job done. The bill came in a little high for just patchwork (no new components or parts were used so it was 95% labor except for some plumbers putty) but it was lower than the "high end" of the quote I got. Despite the cost, the benefit here is you know what you're getting and that (so far based on my experience anyway) is an honest job and reliable company. So, if you're looking for the cheapest, fastest option you probably want to go elsewhere. If you're looking for a reputable company that tells you straight up what's going on, gives you an estimate and sticks to it, then Five Star is your company! read more

Overpriced; job not completed; service was poor The job was not completed as requested: I asked for a sink repair that included fixing a leaking pipe and repairing a slow flow in the hot water tap. James gave me a quote of $265 to "replace the trap and cut a pipe." I thought this would plead the job. It did not because he did nothing to fix the slow flow in the hot water tap. My complaint was met with excuses: The owner, Kevin, stated that of course the slow water tap was not included for that price. I emphasized I had mentioned this not only to James but also when I placed the order. He took no responsibility for this. The quote of $265 appears excessive. When Kevin came to estimate the cost to finish the job, I asked him what he charges for labor. He refused to say, stating he makes quotes by the job. I asked him how much the pipe and trap would cost. Again, he refused to say. I later discovered that the materials could be purchased locally for about $40. So I was charged $225 for one hour of labor and for the surcharge for the parts. The second quote was excessive with unnecessary work advised: To be fair, Kevin did a thorough job of looking at the underside of the sink and pointing out that the countertop needed replacement. However, he told me the job included changing the two cut off valves, replacing the faucet and an additional item I can't remember (not specified on the quote). The second quote was $665. I asked if it's possible that replacing the faucet would fix the problem. He responded it's best to complete this work because, if done piecemeal, it would cost more. Instead of approving this job, I spent $40 for a faucet and asked a friend to replace it. This solved the problem that Kevin advised I spend $665 to repair. James was more than three hours late: I had an 8 to 10 AM appointment window and asked to be the first customer at 8:00. James said he would try. He called the next morning at 9 AM and said he would arrive as soon as possible but was delayed due to snow (this explanation is dubious: there was no snow at my residence in Providence; nearby areas received less than 2 inches). I informed him in advance that I had to leave at noon and wanted the job done before I left. He arrived at 11:30 and stated it would take him an hour to complete the work. I paid for the job before leaving, trusting that it would be done properly and for a fair price. My trust was misplaced. read more

He looked at my pipes and noticed that the walls were build too close to the pipes, causing them to knock up against the wall when there was hot water. Unfortunately, there isn't much to be done about it, but I appreciate how he was able to explain the situation. He also noticed a bit of water damage and gave me some tips on the boiler. We clogged our double side kitchen sink. My boyfriend tried everything. We tried two different snakes and drano until eventually we just had to call the plumber. I hate, hate, hate to downgrade a business, but here's the story. Kevin installed a stainless sink and repaired a leak in my kitchen. The bill seemed high (actually VERY high), but I trusted him and left it at that. Fast forward about 6 months and we're having our kitchen modestly updated. I intended to keep the new sink originally (it was less than 1 year old!), but two different repair guys asked me about it. I had already noticed the rust starting to appear on the surface. They both (separately and without me asking) told me the sink was a piece of crap and one of them told me if I paid more than $80 for it, I got hosed. Let's just say Kevin charged me a LOT more for it. To be very fair - I should have called Kevin immediately when I noticed problems with the sink. I didn't. That was my fault and why I'm not giving a lower review. He can't fix what he doesn't know about. BUT he did install a poor quality sink and charged me for a premium one. read more

I hired Five Star after I started having issues with my hot water tank. It was rather old and I knew it needed replacing. When I called the woman answering the call was extremely polite and actually made me laugh with her greeting (not because it was corny but because it was genuinely something that made you feel comfortable - it wasn't just the standard "Hi, this is Five Star Plumbing. What." if you know what I mean.) After taking my information Kevin called me back later in the day and was able to give me a quote for everything, which was comparable to other quotes I had gotten. What made me decide to go with Five Star over some other places that may have come in slightly lower in price was these reviews. There is a reason people are giving Kevin and his company 5 star ratings. He was prompt, knowledgable, friendly, and technically went above and beyond what he needed to do to, by definition, "just replace a hot water tank". They couldn't fix the problem but had a colleague from another company who they contacted for us and they came right away and cleared the problem. Cannot say enough good things about this business. Kevin called me back after I requested a quote online to install a new kitchen faucet and a new stand-alone shower assembly and valve. Kevin sent me a quote, and I hired them for an October 30 installation. AMAZING SERVICE!! We had a leak in our water line and after my husband's first two attempts to fix it failed, it was time to call in the professionals ... and that's exactly what we got!! Even thought we called in the afternoon, Five Star said they would do their best to come out the same day! I should start by saying that I appreciated that Five Star Plumbing actually answered/returned my calls, were able to accommodate me quickly with a semi urgent problem, quoted a reasonable price, and carried out the work per our discussion. That part was not a problem. However, I didn't appreciate that some innuendo was made towards our babysitter while we were not home (i.e. talk of trying to get her number). It was nothing she couldn't handle, and I think in his mind he was just joking around, but she didn't feel comfortable having this plumbing service back, and personally I find it very distasteful/unprofessional when contractors make any sort of comment along these lines towards young women who are alone in our house. read more

Kevin was the 6th plumber in as many months to come and try to fix our toilet. We knew it was something more than just a regular clog. No one else was able to identify the problem, and lots of expensive and outlandish suggestions were made. It had been augured at least 4 times, but no one paid attention to what must have been going on like Kevin did. Kevin came in and decided that something must have been lodged in the pipe, but that the others had somehow missed it. He then fixed the problem--a TOOTHBRUSH stuck in the pipe--in two minutes. He also tested the toilet out, flushing paper several times to make sure it wouldn't clog, and changing the water level, before declaring the job done. I was so happy I was BEAMING. On top of knowing his stuff so very well, Kevin is so polite and courteous, and very friendly. We had a nice chat for a half hour once he was done. What a nice guy! And he loves pets, too. Although he wasn't the person who could solve the heating issue that I had, he referred me to someone who could. That person (Ken's Heating, 401-525-0730) came this evening (the same day I called him), despite being very busy, and had it solved within 20 minutes.
