Over the past 6 months, I have called them 3 times now. The first was for a messy sewage backup on Labor Day weekend, the other times were for a toilet that wouldn't flush. In all three cases they showed up on time an the jobs were completed in what I would consider to be a timely manner. Not too much keeping this from a 5 star review other than the prices being on the high side for the toilet repairs. In the past two trips, I spent over $600. I could have a brand new toilet in place for that amount. The tech who came on the last trip did give some good advice to prevent the problem from re-occurring. I would certainly consider them again, but hope I won't need their services for awhile. read more

Please think twice before using Roto rooter. I had a clogged toilet they came out told me I had a massive root problem and job would cost 10,000.00. Never even gave me a quote. They are commission based and push for all kinds of unnecessary work. Through a friend I received Paul Anderson drain cleaning number. Paul Anderson stayed on the phone with me all weekend and came out today fixed the problem for 500.00. I spoke with a manager at Roto rooter yesterday and sweared by his employees work. Well after they ripped me off a 1,000 did not fix the problem I had Paul Anderson fix the problem for 500.00 and there is no whole in my pipe. Think twice before calling them please. read more

I had a very similar situation to many reviewers. A pipe in our home had burst and we called this company and the water company to shut off our water. An unlicensed inspector guy blamed us that we didn't give the right information because customers often don't. He brought a clean-up guy who hung around for about an hour making sure he was there when we contacted our insurance. He wanted to talk politics which was beyond unprofessional.. it was like he was trying to get us to become Maga. It was insane and beyond inappropriate and I should have asked him to leave. This company has admitted THEY HAVE NO PLUMBERS ON STAFF. They have always been known for plumbing. So they are now bait and switch for insurance money. Try Angie's list. read more

Received immediate phone call inquiring about our situation & was able to set up a no cost assessment & quote for 8:30am the next morning. As promised, they called us about 30 minutes before arrival. The rep met with my husband who explained our concerns. He said it was completely different problem than we thought. MOF, he noticed a leak that had just started. He provided us with an estimate in about 15 minutes. You get what you pay for! Rotorooter, sure the reputation out there from the larger companies is that they're more expensive. I'm not even sure if that's true. I do know the plumber I used previously didn't return my call for 6 hours while active sewage beginning to build in my basement. I'm not upset with him, just that this was an emergency situation given the hazards of a sewage overflow. I needed someone there, on a Saturday, immediately. So I don't want to disparage the tradesmen who are smaller operations in Providence, they simply don't have the emergency personnel resources to get to an emergency quickly enough. Roto Rooter should be teaching a masterclass in customer service. I had a hell of a job due to a sewage backup in my basement that required digging up half my street in Providence. And the cost of remediation was high, very high. On Saturday, the tech Brendan Aunchman was at my home in an hour. He spent over 6 hours snaking the line in every which direction possible. He finally had to give up and let me know more extreme measures were needed. Btw... He was very good at explaining everything, even show me the camera line and answer any questions I had. That night he already had paperwork to set me up for a bigger operation Monday morning. This required outside excavation. Monday morning at 730 am everyone who needed to be here was here and started working right away with permits in hand. This was a bad news project at every turn requiring a 2 day job overall. The master plumber, John Facchiano was down underground digging his butt of for hours. The manager Joe Desimone was there all hours of the day either by phone or in person to keep me calm and explain what was happening. My job ultimately required the assistance of the city water authority. Did I have to worry about that? Nope. They took care of it all. I like that they involved me as little or much as I wanted to be as I had other things happening in life during the project and really didn't need to know too much about the headache going on outside my house. What was an extremely stressful time was tamped down for me due to above and beyond customer service and communication. Even if I ended up with a lower quote, I'd gladly pay Roto Rooter the extra few bucks for the experience. Because of that I ditched my local guy and decided to have roto rooter deal with some other basement issues as well unrelated to the sewage backup. Cheaper isn't always better. They changed my mind about just having a "guy" who does a bit of everything. I'd rather have these pros any day of the week. Thanks for making a tough week easier. I dropped a diamond earring down my sink and unfortunately don't have a trusted plumber. Roto-rooter got the job done quickly and professionally! Someone was at my apartment within the hour and the pricing was very transparent. They do have a minimum show up fee which is reasonable and comparable to other places I called, and they didn't charge me anything above that for such a simple job. Roto-Rooters who serves Pawtucket: Never had an issue with Roto Rooter until now. I called them in September due to my main drain back up and was charged 900 dollars for the hydro jetting and snaking services. In the midst of all that, one of the tech was trying to promote his plumming side business and gave me his phone number. A few weeks later (October) my pipes backed up again and I had a flood in my basement. I called Roto Rooters and they sent out two techs, who snaked out huge ball of roots out of my drain. From the amount of roots that they snaked, it looked like nothing was done a few weeks ago back in September and I was charged 900 dollars for services and it was hard to believe that services were provided. I honestly think the tech, who was promoting his side business thought I was going to call him instead of Roto-Rooters! A few day later I called back and spoke to a supervisor Wilson Molina, who was extremely rude and wouldnt give me his name. Wilson Molina didn't want to hear what I had to say because it was his "top plumber" who provided the service back in September. He pretty much didn't believe what I had to say, dismissed me and didn't wanted no part in making this situation right. So I asked to speak to the general manager Joe Desimone, who was very professional, helpful and understanding. I am very thankful that he intervened in this suitatuon. Wilson Molina ended up calling me back to apologize. He told me that I was right and he was just looking out for "his boy", who unfortunately was wrong in this situation. How sad and unprofessional that he could not differentiate between work and his personal relationship as a supervisor. I feel like I was taken advantage of as a YOUNG FEMALE Landlord. I called to have a flange replaced and the tech quoted me $800 just for the flange. He saw my eyes bulge and said that since I would be installing the new toilet myself, he could do it for $500. Was given 9-3 window for service with a call/text 30 mins prior. i called at 315 to check when I heard nothing. They came, did 1/3 of the job, causing extra sewage to be dumped on my floor when a bucket could have been placed under the line to catch at least some of it. They told me people would be in touch with me later that day about the 2nd part which was cleaning up the sewage so where it's a biohazard it needed to be done quickly. I called twice, was told I'm on the list and they'd still be by that night. Around 1am I gave up assuming they'd call first thing the next day but received no call. I forgot about my previous experience and had the exact same scheduling baloney that happened 5 years ago again. They came late 30 minutes after a huge 4 hour scheduled window, let me know they didn't have the parts and would come back the next day between 8 am and noon. I called dispatch and moved that to a time I could actually do in the afternoon. Day of, they tell me after waiting around for another 4 hours that they can't make it and will now come tomorrow. My hot water heater stopped working on New Years Eve and I have a toddler, so I needed hot water. What I will say for Roto Rooter is they had the first available appointment. However, the fee was astronomical. I told them ahead of time that I would need a thermocouple - very common, cheap part. However, even though I told them twice, they still charged me the time it took the plumber to go get one. In the end it was not the thermocouple that was broken (this was not their fault - plumber told me it could be that or the gas valve ). However, they charged $450 and did not even get it working. They quoted us over $600 to get the gas valve changed, and wouldn't even supply the part - they told us we had to go through the hot water heater company. In the end, I called a different local plumber and they brought the gas valve and replaced it for a total of $200. Roto-Rooter is not the worst plumber I've used, but the cost is ridiculous. read more

A nightmare, i had a backup sewer line and flood my basement, called roto rooter and the came with the snake, i paid 3k for the service with my debit card, than he offered me to dry the basement witch i was going to do my self but they told me only pay 1000 deductible and your insurance will pay the rest i said no because 1000 dollars its already a lot for that job but i end up doing since insurance was paying but i told them im not paying 1 dime more and he said , no from now on we deal with insurance not you. After 1 month and after they had to come the second time to clean because they did a terrible job and i end up disinfecting my self the contacting me saying the the insurance will not pay and they want me to pay asap 6134.08 or they have to put a lien on my property. I told them i was very clear that i didn't want to pay 1000 deductible but they forced me and end up paying the deductible and not a dime more.4000 dollars was already a lot for what it was done ( 3000 for snake and 1000 deductible) now they after me for another 6134 total 10.134 for a hours work that i had to do it my self after the mess they left. read more

Caution! Never use this company. I had a clog in drain under my sink which prevented my dishwasher from draining. I called RR for service and when they came the said I needed to clean out the pipes all the way down to the basement as well as replace part of the drain in my kitchen. They estimated the whole job at almost $900.00. I told them to just replace the pipe under the sink where the clog was as everything else in the home was draining properly. So it obviously wasn't in the basement. They were just trying to scam money from me. They replaced part of the pipe under the sink below the trap and charged me over $300.00. The dishwasher still didn't drain. They said I needed a new dishwasher. I was Annoyed that this dishwasher was new and expensive. So they left. My uncle came over to look at the clog issue. He was able to fix it In less than 3 minutes without replacing any piping. There was a clog in the trap that he stuck a screwdriver into to break up the clog. They replaced the pipes before the trap where the clog was and it wasn't the dishwasher at all. I called to complain about being charged to fix something that didn't need be fixed and they keep giving me the run around. They are totally scam artists and have awful customer service. Called on a Sunday afternoon because my bathtub wouldn't drain. They wouldn't give me pricing on the phone, but sent the guy to the house for free. He was there within about an hour. So far so good. Then he told me how much he wanted to snake the drain--over $500! I was taken aback. I declined, and he dropped the price instantly to $350. I declined again, and he dropped the price to $250. Some googling before I called suggested I should expect to pay between $150-$200 for this service. He was also pushing their overpriced drain goo. He said that was why my drain clogged in the first place--because I wasn't pouring this stuff (and my money) down the drain every month. Of course, he didn't know what was actually clogging it at that point, but hey, never miss a chance to sell stuff I guess. I wouldn't have been surprised if the guy tried to sell me a used car before he left. That was how the interaction felt all around. After he left, a friend of mine and I cleared the drain with a $25 snake from Lowe's and a shop vac. Took about 20 minutes, if you don't include travel time to the store and back. Boy am I glad I didn't spend $500+ on this. From reading the other reviews, which I now wish I had done before calling in the first place, my experience is not unique. I won't be calling them in the future. Tl;dr: 1. Their business model seems to be bending homeowners over a table. Be warned--they will charge you multiple times what a regular plumber will charge for the same service. 2. If you do hire them (and you shouldn't), haggle the price down. There is lots of room to move (i.e., you're getting horribly ripped off at full price) 3. Basic clog removal is pretty easy if you have the right tools, all of which are a lot cheaper than hiring these guys. Let me preface by saying that I HATE calling tradespeople, my wallet always feels so much lighter post visit. Today's concern had been to cap a waterline, and address a potential leak in my kitchen faucet. Apolo, my plumber, was terrific. We ran some tests proving the faucet was good, but the previous homeowner had done his own plumbing before me, and so he recommended a redo of the plumbing underneath to avoid a potential future issue. I'm not a pro, but I knew it looked bad. His aptitude in this field was undeniable, and he showed me the clog buildup already in place, and how I probably would've been calling them back shortly. I literally renewed my RI drivers license online and, received in the mail quicker than these jerks got me a gift card for fucking up their service. Ready for the kicker....!....they told me they'd give me $100 gift card to a place of my choosing and they only gave me $50. Upward and onward, corporate here I come!!!! Two can play this game. Let the games begin. ------------ 8/12/17 So after a couple weeks of waiting for Roto Rooter to get in touch with me, I finally talked to them yesterday. They were apologetic for what had happened, and completely owned their mistakes which was refreshing. They offered me a $100 gift card to wherever I chose as an apology so I guess I'll be getting that in the mail soon. I appreciate their ownership for their mistakes, and their attempt to make up for it, but I still won't recommend their services or give them a higher rating on here. Good riddance! read more

We are in the process of buying a home and had Roto-Rooter come out to inspect our sewer line. We discovered in the video inspection that the line had significant blockages from roots. The technician suggested that the entire pipe needed to be replaced or otherwise cleaned out and relined. The cost of relining was $200 a foot. When I asked (a woman without my husband present, so got a lot of "little lady" attitude) if we could just clean out the pipe and address later, I was told it was impossible to just clean it out. But that is exactly what would have happened before the relining. The technician basically acted like the house would fill with sewage if it was not addressed that instant. I understand that he has a service to sell, but this felt like preying on the customer. Lots of groaning and sighing as he inspected it. So much doom and gloom. I got a second (third and fourth) opinion and not only was the recommendation from all of them to just clean out the line and then do annual maintenance for $500 total, they said relining, if it was absolutely necessary would be $70-90 a foot instead. A total rip off and felt like really predatory process. At the very least, get multiple estimates on cost. read more

We have very old plumbing and were trying to replace an old toilet which didn't even have a shut off valve. It went straight into the tank. Ed warned me that it could go one of 2 ways. 1. He unscrews the pipe and it comes off and replaces without a problem. 2. It breaks on the inside of the wall and we have to tear through the wall to fix it (the reason we didn't even try). Fortunately, he was able achieve #1. It did need some nonstandard parts to make the connection which we would never have been able to find at Home Depot or Lowes. He did a great job! read more

Called them Monday because I had a clog in my main sewer line and was unable to clear it myself with the hand auger I owned. They sent a Tech out for a free estimate to clear the line. Two hours later a younger man showed up, I believed his name was Rues, I bring him down to the basement where I already had all the access to my drain ditch opened up for him and explained the problem. With out even opening the clean out, he starts telling me that there is a whole house trap in the floor (which was true) and that their Augers can not get threw them. I replied back to him saying isn't that what the 2nd cap is for? He then tells me that there is multi-able bends in the traps and that they can't be cleaned out. he then tells me that they will have to dig up the old trap and replace it with a newer clean out for a cost of $3750.00 but they offer financing. I ask him again if he could just open the 2nd cover plate and see if the blockage could be just right there. I'm told that he sees this a 100 times a day and that the only way to solve this issue is replace it and sets up a time for another plumber to come out the next day. Once he left I did some online searching for how these traps work and sure enough I find that there is only the one bend (kind of like a p trap under the sink) and that by removing the 2nd cover you can easily clear the trap and snake the line going out to the street. After a trip to Lowes to by the right tool to remove the old brass cover with the square head ($20.00) I immediately found my blockage and with a thick pair of rubber gloves and a clothes pin on my nose (exaggeration) I had the blockage cleared and everything back up and running. I called R/R back to cancel the appointment and requested that a manager of some sort call me back to explain why this guy wanted to charge me 3700$ with out even looking at drain. I will never ever call for their service again. Scam artists at their best. read more

I called Roto-Rooter to fix a laundry sink leak. The charge would have been 375. Wilkins was fairly on time and friendly. Shortly upon arrival he told me about their whole house special for 795 where you save over 1500. What's included: They clean all the drains (about 6 drains) and the main line and do a video inspection. All their work is guaranteed for a year. Whereas the laundry sink repair would be only 6 months. They also included a treatment product to use monthly as maintenance. I was not planning on spending 800 right before the holidays, but we had been having several slow running drains for a while and they were at our home. Wilkins cleaned the toilet while waiting for Apollo to arrive as the WHS was a two-man job. He wanted me to make sure the toilet looked the same after the cleaning, as that's their policy that everything look untouched when they're done. Apollo and Wilkins had to move around a shelf to get at the main line. Equipment was brought to the basement and they began their work. The pump was loud and I could hear Apollo explaining the process to Wilkins, which sent doubts about how often Wilkins performed that type of work. The video inspection was cool to watch. All in all they were here for four hours total. They returned the shelf and tried to sell me a second treatment product so I could have double since my drains needed a lot of maintenance and seemed disappointed I didn't want to spend another 50. The laundry room sink repair is functional. They only thing is there's dried dirty stains (sewage?) on my laundry bottles and a few of the items that were on the shelf, dryer, and sink. It would have been nice if they cleaned that up instead of me finding the mess the next day. I thought it was their policy that everything look untouched when they're done. The shower is still slow flowing, but not as much. All the other drains run clear. read more

A sudden back up of sewage into the downstairs shower was not fun. RotoRooter's employee, Chris Eldridge (Service Tech #4635), was dispatched quickly after I called for help. I appreciated his humor and professionalism as he cleared the main line with a long, heavy duty, electric snake. He came back a few days later with a sewer camera and gave a thorough colonoscopy to my house. Yes, bush and tree roots, and bellied line means something has to be done. Haven't received an estimate yet for the various approaches to the problem. So far, my experience has been this company has been a good one. Revised the 5 stars to 3 stars: this service cost over $1000. I thought at the time it was typical. Ooooh no, not by a long shot. I had a back up again and a friend told me to call another business. We work with Jim Dowding. Jim checks in on us every 6 months to make sure that our roots are under control. We live in an old house that is surrounded by trees whose roots constantly invade and clog our pipping. Jim comes and clears the pipes, taking the time to explain each step of the process, suggest alternative treatments and helps us plan for future projects to repair and maintain our pipe system. Roto-Rooter has consistently been on time, efficient and affordable. We couldn't keep our house above water without them. read more

The technician was here promptly and provided excellent service he even gave me advice on how to best avoid the situation in the future. I appreciated his candidness and professionalism. He was a very nice person and deserves great clients! The only reason why did not give five stars is because the prices for a snake was between $399-489. I feel the prices are a bit absorbent. Update- 4/20/18 Q: How can a company that charges over 2x as much as the highest hourly rate that a normal/honest plumber would charge & that slaps on an extra $50 for parts make itself look even worse? A: By assigning one of their people to keep up with Yelp reviews and pretend to take complaints seriously. "Pat Swanson" contacted me and said a complaint would be filed on my behalf. The local Roto Rooter branch called me and essentially told me "Well, that's just the way it is-that's how we do business." That's it! I understand that the company wants to try to make people think they are doing something to address negative Yelp reviews--and having a rep type in responses to each one might look impressive--but there is no substance. I can't stress enough just how horrible these people treated me or how bad of a job they did. First they charged $650 for a $200 snake job. Then they tried to get me for another $1200 to jet the pipe and even tried to sell me an $8000 job that I didn't need. No warranty and I had a flood within a week. In addition, they left the toilet and pipes in disrepair and in violation of RI code. I called Wood's Rooter Services that came in, and when they recovered from the shock of how Roto-Rooter left it, jetted, snaked and scoped the pipe for $395. Full warranty. No problems since. Is there anything less than one star? UPDATE!!! Roto-Rooter contacted me and gave me a full refund. I commend them and the poor girl that had to talk to both me, a very unwilling and hostile customer, and her bosses in order to resolve this issue. Her good nature stopped me from hanging up the phone when she first identified herself. Summary... The quality of work remained poor without apology. The prices remain about three times that of comparable local companies. They went out of their way to contact me and give me a full refund, but it was not until I posted a negative review. They knew well in advance of that that I was not happy and they would not have otherwise attempted resolution. For these reasons, I've changed my rating from 1 star to 2. read more
