My son and I had a wonderful two days diving with Barry over our spring break trip to Maui. My son had completed his online training and pool work in California, so we made a reservation with Barry to finish his open water certification with a referral course. We scheduled five dives over two days -- four for the certification and an extra one as a skills refresher. I'm already certified but hadn't been diving in several years, so I was able to joined them on most of the dives. Barry is an outstanding instructor. He's encouraging yet precise -- striking a good balance between demonstrating skills, offering guidance, and ensuring that you're truly mastering the material. Each dive began with required skills (like mask clearing, out-of-air drills, controlled emergency swim ascent, etc...), and then we used the remaining time to explore the beautiful nearby reefs. Over the two days, we saw sea turtles, eels, an octopus, and an amazing variety of fish, both large and small. On our final dive, Barry filmed us using professional gear, and the resulting video turned out great -- a fantastic memory of our first dives together for my son and me. We also really appreciated Barry's flexibility. When my son caught a cold, Barry was happy to reschedule our second dive day to later in the week, which made for a much better and safer experience overall. He had all the equipment we needed for diving: wet suit, mask, fins, BCD, tank, etc. I had a 7 mm wetsuit since I got cold easily. We dived at Mala Wharf and Airport Beach on scooters! We also did a night dive with him. I called and asked about organizing a private dive charter as my wife and I were especially interested in the backside of Molokini, but did not want to deal with the headache of one of those large dive groups. Barry said he would price out a dive trip and get back to me. A little later he provided us with some different options, not trying to sway us one way or the other. On the day of the dive, we arrived at the boat launch to our private charter with Barry+a boat crew of 3. All our gear was set up and organized perfectly. The dives went great and Barry was with us the whole time taking pictures and video (he has an amazing underwater camera setup). He made sure our experience was focused on having a great time, which we did. The best part about working with him was that he acted as the singular point of contact. I didn't have to organize a a charter, equipment rental, etc. He took care of it all. He's a fantastic diving concierge, guide, and photographer. I will also say that his charter price was significantly cheaper than when I called dive shops directly and inquired about private charters. Hi, I recently went on a two-tank dive with Scuba Barry while on Maui. I've been coming to Maui for many years and have done all the usual dives offered by the larger dive companies, from both shore and boats. I was tired of going to the same dive spots as well as the larger groups often come with commercial dive companies - so I went looking for something new. That's when I found Barry. We did two shore dives using scooters to spots I had never been and had a GREAT day of diving! (If you haven't tried diving with a scooter, I highly recommend it!) Barry provided a very professional and personalized, one-on-one experience for me. He was very patient while I learned how to use the scooters and provided a lot of safety information and planning for our dives, more than I ever received elsewhere; so I felt very comfortable even though I was in "unchartered waters" ;) In making my decision about who to dive with, I ultimately chose Barry for a few reasons. Barry is certified as an instructor at a much higher level than you get with larger commercial dive companies. He worked with me directly to pick dives I wanted to do. He has all the dive equipment I needed, including the beautiful new scooters. He also has extremely high-end photography equipment even though I did not need this on my dives. Originally was diving with Barry for him to certify my girlfriend. He was very patient and spent many hours working with her. When she decided she wanted to take more time to get certified, Barry and I went on the remaining dives. He was very knowledgeable about all of the different dive location choices as well as all of the different things we saw on the dives and he was extremely accommodating. His gear was great and the dives were amazing! We went on dives at three different locations including a night dive (he can also take you on scooter dives).
