Bad food bad service. This was our second time trying Five West after a bad experience a few years ago when they first opened. No hostess at the front. The lady that came to seat us looked annoyed that she had to leave whatever else she was doing and didn't even crack a smile. Later on an older couple walked in, waited a few min and just turned around and left because nobody seated them. We came for happy hour not realizing its not a good deal like most happy hours. It was $2 off appetizers which are all close to $15 to begin with. I ordered nachos and tried to change my order 2 min later when the waitress came back with our drinks. I seriously doubt she had even submitted our order yet but said she had to check with the kitchen. Came back and said sorry they already started making the food. Even so, I think they should have let me change the order just for good customer service. The nachos were terrible too, a huge plate of mostly dry chips and cheese with only a small amount of garnish on top and the smallest dish of salsa imaginable. My husband ordered calamari which he said was okay. He also got a side of brussel sprouts which were drenched in a sweet sauce that tasted like pancake syrup. Completely disgusting and inedible, not sure how you can mess up brussel sprouts and bacon. Was supposed to be honey glaze apparently. But literally soaking wet with a puddle of syrup in the bottom of the bowl. Lastly, we sat inside and were bombarded with flies the whole time to the point I could barely take a bite of food without swatting them away. We will not be coming back. Hopefully they can better train their waitresses, kitchen staff, and managers in customer service. Way overpriced for bad food. read more

I've been disappointed with the food. The atmosphere is fun and the service is great. It feels like the chef is afraid to add flavor. Once I had a sandwich that had a horseradish sauce on it, but it was like watered down mayo/sour cream. I didn't even finish it, there was zero flavor. The missus ordered the beef short rib, that looked fantastic, but fell well short of expectations. I ordered the Thai Burger. It was alright, but the patty tasted frozen, and there was no savory flavor that you'd expect with something labeled Thai. The only saving grace was the service. This was my first time eating at Five West, and I will definitely become a regular customer. I went at lunchtime and was seated right away. The large space and modern details provide a nice ambience. My waitress was friendly and offered helpful advice. The fried green tomatoes were good, though being from the South I'm more accustomed to them being served with comeback sauce rather than ranch. I had the blackened chicken and avocado melt sandwich, and it was delicious. I swapped out regular fries for sweet potato fries, which were also good. I didn't come intending to get desert but couldn't resist the description of rocky road brownie sundae. It was heaven! I'd come back just for the dessert! We researched this restaurant through Yelp and decided we had to go for lunch. The first thing to say, and this is not the fault of the restaurant, is that we sat outside. Very nice under the Fall sun, but we were almost defeated by the flies. It may be a good decision to sit inside. The service was friendly and efficient. I ordered walleye in batter and my girl ordered breaded walleye, both were served with a variety of vegetables. I was disappointed with the fish. It tasted as though it may have been frozen. The prices suggested the fish should have been fresh. My girl took a first bite and found a long black hair. Fortunately the waitress spotted the event, moved in, took the dish and promised it would be replaced. The maitre'd promised we would be given a free desert. A few minutes later, her replacement meal arrived with sincere apologies. But, she also claimed the fish was very poor in quality. We both also felt the mix of vegetables was such that there were no individual tastes. It was just a veggie mass alongside some poor quality fish. In her meal, there was more crust than fish. So, neither of us finished our meals and we chose not to have a desert, free or otherwise. The biggest disappointment was that we consequently paid the full amount. We did not enjoy our visit to Five West and will not return. read more

5 West does have excellent breakfast. New Orleans Pizza excellent, usually I take it home, serves 3 to 4 meals. A real bargain. Corn beef hash tastes homemade. Excellent breakfast menu, but only go when nice weather so we can sit outside. Just too noisy inside, it would be nice too f they would cut the music, we might go there more often. I dine out to visit first and hope to have a good meal. I would say 5 West has the best breakfast in Rochester. read more

Late lunch on 12/30/18. Neat decor. Industrial chic. Exposed ceilings, wood. Assortment of hightop tables, regular tables and bar seating. Very unique menu. Loaded with so many things I wanted to try, it was hard to select just one entree. I had the cherry almond salad with salmon and maple dressing. Another person had the walleye on polenta and someone had a lime shrimp dish. Waitress was attentive. I can't wait to go to Five West again. read more

I've written a few reviews on 5 West that weren't so good. I wanna update that. We had dinner on the patio last night (the inside is still a loud rumble in my hearing aids) and it was perfect. The lighting, décor and noise levels were right. The water feature makes the road noise from Circle Drive a non-issue. It was very relaxing. I had the Flank Steak Salad, my Wife the Walnut Chicken Salad. They were terrific and well presented. It was nice to be able to order a beer from my favorite local brewery LTS. We'll be back. Maybe I'll try dinner on the patio in February and see how that review goes :-). PWC read more

Came in on a Sunday eve around 8:30pm, the place wasn't even 1/3 full. We were immediately greeted and sat by staff, brought waters, and informed that the server would be by promptly. After at least 10mins of waiting for the initial greet by our server we left. We're local and have eaten at 5 West many times and the service has been consistently mediocre. Tonight was it, I doubt we'll be back. Rochester has increasingly more food options. read more

I was here for some tests at Mayo and had to have something with no butter, gravy, oil, dressings or sauce and they were find enough to make me some plain pasta and steamed broccolini so I came back for a good dinner tonight. The bourbon glazed smoked short rib with garlic mash and grilled broccolini was phenomenal! So glad I came! read more

Pretty good breakfast! I love coming here Monday mornings after working nights over the weekend. They offer a mayo discount for "third shifters" if you have your ID badge from certain places. Haven't ever been there for lunch or dinner, but it is always crowded. Dog friendly patio. read more

This is the first time we've been here and we were there for lunch. The waitress did a great job but the food was average at best. I ordered the West Burger with a side salad for 16.00 and my wife ordered the Margherita Pizza for 15.00. Culver's has a much better burger at less than half the price and the pizza was just ok. read more

Spacious is the first thing that comes to mind. The kitchen looks like it may be a chef's heaven. For food, I can only speak for what I had, the Scallops Carbonara. It was decent and I would probably have it again. read more

Solid place. I'd say 3 1/2 is a bit more accurate but we live right down the road and spend a lot of time here. Brunch is my favorite and the corned beef hash is some of the best I've ever had. Dinner is nice too and the food ranges from good to outstanding. Staff is very nice, at times unorganized but the restaurant is fairly new and that may just be growing pains. I like that they serve Left Hand Milk Stout :D A couple of cases that really impressed me. Once I made a comment that the corned beef was pretty tough (it usually melts in your mouth) and the manager came by and took quite a bit of time to apologize and just chat in general. That made an impression. Another time I came here with a very large running group after an early morning run. There had to be 30-40 of us and considering the large group the staff handled it well. Decided to try this place out for Sunday brunch. The food was good. I had a veggie eggs Benedict. The H sauce was quite good as was one of the poached eggs. The other egg was way over cooked. Hash browns were nicely done, but not what I had ordered. My wife had a croissant sandwich that was okay, but croissant was tough, sausage patty was small and too thick (absent in most bites, and arugula added nothing. All-in-all, 3 solid stars for food. The service was not good. The host staff seemed to wish they were elsewhere. Open tables were abundant, but we were told to wait without explanation. The bartender repeatedly ignored us. Our server got my order wrong and appeared disinterested. The front end staff seemed aloof, and acted as if they were doing us a great favor by doling out a bit of their attention. The restaurant is attractive inside, and the outdoor seating would be appealing when it's warmer. Nonetheless, the poor service will probably keep us from trying it out. read more

Lovely place! I came here for a business lunch on a weekday within their first week of opening. It was about half full. Service was fabulous, ambiance rustic and trendy, we all enjoyed our food. I had the steak fettuccini. It was delicious. The fries are like crack: garlicky herby crack! So good! The brownie actually is an enormous portion consisting of 3 good sized brownies with vanilla ice cream. I am looking forward to trying the rest of their menus. Great atmosphere but a little loud. Beautiful outdoor seating and interesting menu. The food is a bit pricey but very tasty. The calamari was excellent but the pumpkin seed crusted walleye was a smaller portion for the price. It was alright but I wouldn't order it again. My friend had the tuna burger which was fantastic! The drink menu has a huge beer selecion, wine list, and some fun cocktails. I had the honeycrisp mojito which was refreshing and dangerous! Very tasty and highly recommended. Parking was the biggest issue with the place. Even with a full lot, street parking full, and some overflow into the next lot, there was still some open seating inside on a Tuesday night. The wait was about 35 minutes and the staff seemed very accommodating. Get a reservation! read more

Second time I have eaten here when I have been in town. I have found it wonderful both times. This time I sat at the bar and the bartenders were very attentive and friendly. The Beef Teriyaki soup was amazing! I had the smoked pork chops this time and they may have been among the best I have ever tasted. Two thick pork chops with a potato mixture below.. delicious! The service here has definitely improved since my last visit when the restaurant just opened. There is about a ~15-20 minute wait to be seated during dinner hours. The food is hit or miss, though definitely better than my first visit last year. We had hummus and spinach and artichoke dip. The hummus was very disappointing, with a bland flavor and thick texture. The spinach and artichoke dip was lacking in flavor. My entree, a spicy rose fettuccine, was notably better and made up for the start of the meal. One of my main complaints would be the inappropriate timing of food and wait. The appetizers took a while to come out, and when they did, we were served our entree at the same time. By the time I got to my entree, it was slightly cold and much less enjoyable. Overall, while the ambiance is nice, the noise level of the restaurant and large booths make it difficult to carry a conversation easily. Five West certainly has gotten better since it opened, but there is room to improve in its serving of dishes and overall food. It is not worth the wait, and I won't be back unless friends want to make the trip. read more
