My rear bumper and quarter panel were damaged by a hit & run driver. I got a number of quotes but Caltech gave me the most reasonable estimate and they were very close to my house. Joe (the owner) and Dago were both friendly, easily-approachable, and easy to get a hold of. They took the time to explain the claims and repair process to me. They found just a bit more internal damage that wasn't seen during inspection, but did not charge me for the extra work. I got my car back within a reasonable amount of time (approximately a week), and the results were phenomenal! CalTech is such a great store with good conscience and I would highly recommend! The owners of this shop, Joe is very enthusiastic and kind! They completely repaired my Mercedes in the most professional and affordable way, instead of deliberately saying how big the problem is like other car repair shop to charge a huge repair fee. The bumper of my Mercedes-Benz was broken, I took it to another store in Mountain View and they quoted $3000 directly, they said the only way is to get a new bumper. But when I go to CalTech, Joe and the maintenance guy fixed it in an hour, guess how much they charged? $30!!!! They also helped me with other parts so that when I ended up being charged only $30, I felt so ashamed and wanted him to charge more. But Joe said they were there to solve problems for people, and that is enough. He refused to charge more. Do you believe that??? I didn't get any servicing done here but I did call & stop by to get a quote. Someone scraped the side of my car while I parked and did not leave a note (boo!) so originally I tried to wipe it off but it looked to me like the paint was scraped off from the other car. A few weeks ago, my car was stolen and when I recovered the car, the thieves totally screwed up the suspension so that my front left tire was pretty much nudged into the fender. A friend of mine provided me with an estimate of close to $3000, which is pretty much a down payment for a new car. But since I needed this car I already had, I tried to go for a fix. Another friend of mine referred this place. I was a bit sketchy, but since he's been a customer for 20 years--I figured why not? The owner, Joe, is very true to your estimate, but depending on your car, it can take a while. Mine has over countless delays because he could'nt find a match to my custom wheels. Because of that, he knocked the original estimate down a bit. I waited three weeks, and as much as the wait sucked, it was well worth it. He took the time to fix other cosmetic damage on my car and gave it a new fresh coat of paint. I'm only taking a star away because he missed a small detail at the bottom of the car and it wasn't vacuumed -- but that's a luxury these days, but he did say that if I told him I was coming, he definitely would've cleaned it. I got what I paid for and a lot more. Joe is a great dude to work with and if I need my autobody fixed, I'll definitely go to him again, especially since my liability insurance doesn't cover everythign. read more

So about two weeks ago, I was hit on my passenger side rear door all the way to the back wheel. I brought my car to CalTech and they replaced the door and the wheel with new parts. They matched the paint and I got my car back in a week. They even fixed the driver door handle even though it wasn't from the accident! Joe and the guys there did an awesome job! I would give this shop a -10 if i could. Cal Tech and its owner Joe Lew is a con artist and extortionist. His staff is unprofessional, careless, incompetent and rude. i took my Nissan 350z to put on new front bumper, side panels and rear panels. i was quoted $400 and 3 business days. on the third day when i was suppose to get the car, i called them, they havnet even taken the parts out of the wrapper! so after rushing them, i got it on the 5th day. from far away the car looked great, but just like all things that are too good to be true, it usually is! i didnt even get within 5 feet of it and i noticed quarter size blemishes and holes on the new parts from front to back. (imagine putting frosting on a cake and you havnet had a chance to even it out yet, those types of blemishes and imperfections). i immediately pointed it out to Joe and the guy had the nerves to tell me that that's the best they can do it! he said i only requested the shop to paint and mount the parts, not sand or fill in the imperfections with bondo. give me a break! do i need to tell you to use screws instead of Elmer's krazy glue??? he goes on to tell me if i want it fix, it will take another 2 weeks for the side rocker panels plus $150 but no guarantees. this guy clearly did not care about his customers. how did it take him 5 days to do 5 pieces but 2 weeks for 2 pieces? can you say EXTORTION! on top of this, my leather seats had 8 cuts in them, there were countless scratches all around the vehicle that was NOT there before. JOE LEW & CAL TECH AUTO BODY ARE INCOMPETENT, EXTORTIONIST, CON ARTISTS!!!!! All I can say is wow... the other reviewers are pretty spot on in terms of "you get what you pay for." Decent price for replacing bumper/fender with minor scratch and dents, but if the deal is too good to be true then it is. Oh the way back home, noticed the new rear bumper was not totally secure to the car and wobbly enough that the driving it on the high way caused vibration. Drove back to the shop to show the owner, he basically told me that is how the car is designed. Pretty damn sure my original bumper did not shake like that for the 12+ years I drove it and it's has minor dents in it! I showed him that even the replacement bumper shows 3 plastic screw holes near the rear tire on each side of the bumper. Its not "rocket science" but if it took 3 plastic bolts to secure the previous bumper in place I expect all 3 bolts to be put back. The owner then goes to the back of the shop and pulls out a toolbox with various bolts and screws "a single" bolt on each side of the rear bumper. Long story short: Decent price on parts, but wouldn't trust them to assemble a LEGO set. If you have "extra" pieces you are doing something wrong. read more

I can't speak for the other reviewers, but I was referred to Joseph Lew at Cal Tech through a few of my mother's church friends who had good work done there. I think this is a good place to go if you're settling a claim outside of insurance. You will get a good deal and the work will be solid, but maybe not as perfect as if you went to one of those big fancy places that overcharge insurance claims... I asked how to do it and he said I will do it for you. He went in and back with a towel with paint thinner. He cleaned up the scratches on my car without charge! Let's just say you get what your paid for. I learned my lesson as a customer/victim of Cal Tech. I had my spoiler painted at Cal Tech several months ago. When I came in to pick up the spoiler, I noticed tiny bubbles all over the spoiler. The shop owner, Joe Lew and his staff not only gave me attitude when I refused to pay for the awful looking end product. Joe also claimed that the bubbles are normal and that I should expect this type of quality since he quoted me such a low price. Worse Auto Body Repair shop. I'm selling my car and I had minor scratches on my bumpers over the years. I went to Caltech Auto Body Shop to get my bumpers painted so it will look better when i sale it later on. The price Joe estimated was decent and beat most of the other shop but the job done is HORRIBLE! After I got my car painted my tires and hood has paint ALL OVER it. The colors they painted on didn't even match my original color. The messy job they did decreased the value of my car I can't even sell it out now! The quality service of this Body Shop sucks. I don't recommend anyone to go there unless you want your car to look worse than it was before they "fix" your car. read more

The other reviewers are pretty much correct. The owner as well as the workers are all out to get your money one way or another through unethical business conduct. On the surface, the owner Joe may seem nice but it is nothing but a mask concealing his true intention of extracting as much money from you as possible. They lied about insurance sending us a check to pay for their service (when insurance already said they will send a check to THEM. They should already know this because this is the second time we went there). We ended up paying up-front only to realize the entire thing and now Joe left us to deal with all the insurance crap which will probably take weeks before we will even receive the check. Recently we were at the mall and someone snapped driver side mirror. We checked online, got jb weld and glued it but there was misalignment and every place we spoke to ( caliber auto repair, crown auto body and few more in milpitas area) quoted around 160 for fixing it and said it was 2 hour job. However, person at caltech was awesome. He took 10 minutes fixed it right away and charged $25. I would definitely recommend this place for honest estimate for the work involved. read more

Yup, just as other customers have said, you get exactly what you pay for. I do not recommend this guy, he is a scam artist, he claims he has been in the business for 25 years, but the work he puts out is pretty bad. I had the upper portion of my front and rear bumper painted black by these guys and there were bubbles on the front bumper and an obvious orange peel on the rear bumper. When I revisted his shop and complained, he said you get what you pay for. This is not how to do business the right way, do not use this shop, it is at your own risk. I can not believe he can stay in business doing such shoddy work. read more

Took a fender in to be painted earlier this year. The owner wrote it up---called him later and asked him when it would be ready. He told me to bring the car in again so he could get the color information on the door---he had done it the first time. I took it in and he got the information. When I picked up the fender, it was a different tint of silver--I didn't say anything, because he had told me that the paint probably would not match correctly. A few weeks later, when I was ordering a couple of spray cans and the clear coat, I noticed that the color he had written the second time was wrong. I think he already had that color from another job and decided to use it. I finally got around to paint the fender today and it came out very good---the color matched the rest of the car and I didn't even have to blend in to the hood and adjacent door. When I sanded the fender that they had painted, there were a lot of small high spots. I would not recommend this outfit. read more
