On Top Barbershop was exactly what my Dad needed! Located in a two story building just off King St. On Top Barber shop looks like a place for the young and hip to get an edgy cut. When we walked in I felt a little worried we just ruined the young vibe. But Daniel (also the owner) flashed his warm smile and made my Dad and me feel at ease. After a brief chat about the type of cut my Dad wanted (no bowl cut) Daniel got started. No pre-wash, dry cut, old school, barber style. I liked it. Daniel kept my Dad entertained and did a nice job! He kept laughing and smiling with my Dad which was so kind. When we paid, Daniel said he would come to the house so my Dad wouldn't have to walk up the stairs. When I called I didn't know what to expect. In Hawaii you have your stable of barbershops. The ones where you walk in and it's crazy expensive and pretentious and everyone is a hipster and too cool to look at you. The Asian ones where it's super cheap and also they live there as well. The high end ones where you're gonna be eating ramen because your cut is gonna cost damn near 100$ including tip. But there are the ones that stand out and this my fellow yelpers are ones we look towards to experience something different and new. OnTop Barbershop is a neighborhood barbershop that resembles your friends house where everyone is up to something whether it be watching TV, taking shots, or just talking story. Everyone in the shop is very welcoming. I felt like I was friends with everyone that was there. I walked in and the owner asked me if I wanted a whiskey while I waited. Looked at the shoes for sale and sat on the comfy couch while I waited and watched people come in with a smile on their face to be greeted. I can see why this place is growing through word of mouth. We were with family visiting from the mainland and stopped into The Gallery (a coffee shop in Waikiki). I've had a family member cut my hair all my life. So when I had to find a barber, I had no idea how to ask for what I want and how I wanted it styled. I don't have much hair so it was pretty easy. Dennis took my call and I was able to walk in. His directions and instructions were awesome. No problems finding the place, parking, and entry. Once inside, I was greeted and everyone was very cordial and friendly. They have 2 large TVs and if you're lucky, you'll meet their mascot. Dennis did great by asking the right questions. A little cautious about not cutting too much but being it was my first time, I get it. I wasn't the most descriptive about what I wanted so it's a learning curve. After a couple tries, we got a great result. I have never gotten compliments on my hair before (like I said, I don't have much hair lol), but after seeing Dennis, people noticed the change and everyone liked it, including myself!
