I recently had a routine cleaning & received a bill showing I was charged the out-of-network rate, while I was informed this office is in-network with my insurance. When I reached out to the office to ask about the bill, I was initially told that I should be in-network, that they would look into this for me & would get back to me later that day. By the end of the following day, I hadn't heard anything back, so I called them again. They just told me what we already knew, which was that insurance only covered 60% of the bill (the out-of-network rate). At this point, I looked up my benefits on my insurance's website just to be sure they hadn't changed. My research confirmed my coverage for that appointment should have been 100%. I even called my insurance company, who also confirmed that the visit should have been covered 100% but was billed improperly. I called again & talked to someone else, who agreed that it was weird that the bill wasn't covered & that they would reach out to the manager & get back to me. Nearly 1 week later & I never heard back from anyone. Instead, I got another message stating that I still had an overdue bill. So, I reached out a fourth time to ask if someone was looking into the bill like I was told. I received a message back stating, again, that my insurance only covered 60% of my bill. Which, as mentioned, we'd already established. At this point, I was quite frustrated as I didn't seem to be making any progress with the bill or getting through to anybody, so I went in-person to the office to try to talk to someone in billing or a manager (which I had to take time out of my work day to do since I work full time). The manager was not available when I went in, so I asked them to at least send her a message for me along with a break down of my insurance benefits (which I printed out for them). I am still waiting to hear back. I work in the medical field, so I understand that things can take time, especially with billing issues and insurance. I also know a lot about insurance at this point and understand that sometimes claims are mistakenly billed or processed improperly. What's frustrating to me is the lack of communication and unwillingness to look further into things for me, especially when I had reached out to the office four different times. Instead of trying to understand what the problem was, it was mostly just met with the same phrase over and over: "Your insurance covered 60%." Instead of this office advocating for me, I've had to go way out of my way to advocate for myself. I believe it's important to advocate for your patients, and that just has not been my experience with this office. I can't imagine what this situation would be like for another patient who hasn't worked with insurance, who may not understand fully what their insurance benefits are and who may not know how to advocate for themselves. Hopefully this office is able to help me out with this situation, though I'm not inclined to return for more appointments in the future. Certainly not worth the headache or wasted time.

Seems they like to do the "bait and switch" tactic. "We will get you right in if you're a new patient but once we have you hooked we are 4-6 months to treat you".

After our initial meet and greet, came the second visit. . .My child was excited until Dr. Dowell wanted his dog on her stomach while he worked. She did NOT want this dog on her, but he insisted. (I have a photo) This diminished her trust in him. She let me know that she didn't like it but said yes so he "wouldn't get mad." I didn't like that answer. I don't want my daughter agreeing to something because she's worried about what that person will say/do! Third visit, we went back for a filling and noted we didn't want his dog on her. He didn't seem too happy and started the filling without any numbing. He didn't want to needle numb or use nitrous oxide so he started drilling raw. My child was uncomfortable and scared. She pinched my hand & I tried telling him, BUT he told me "I want her to tell me" She was clamping my hand; she could NOT talk with tools in her mouth!!! From there, he decided that because she was scared, crying, and bleeding profusely from her mouth that he would attempt laughing gas. NOTE: There was no anesthesiologist there to monitor this being administered. *Not only did he not listen to me as her fingers and legs started showing signs of a classic 'Tonic-Clonic Seizure', but he kept administering the nitrous after the initial phase (muscle stiffening) which caused her hands, fingers and legs to lock in a cramped position. I was so terrified that I wanted to call an ambulance. Once I ran out of the room, he finally took me seriously and stopped gassing her. I was frantic on the phone with my mom as an assistant came to tell me my child was ok ~ I came back in to her crying as he's rubbing her hands trying to get them to loosen up He almost caused a seizure on my 7 year old, which could've had irreparable damage!! When they called to try to reschedule, I asked the staff what they would do to prevent this from happening again. They said the dentist would contact me with those details. Dr. Dowell sent me and my child's father an AI generated response as to how it was my daughter's fault for being scared and not his fault. (I have photo proof that over 70% of his response was AI generated. ) He never reached out to me personally & hasn't checked on my child since the visit ... yet ... they billed me for another visit that we NEVER attended & now they won't stop calling for money. This is not an office I trust and that is not a dentist I would recommend for your children. Please moms, if you care about your child, go to a dentist that has an anesthesiologist on site. His lack of concern for her small body and all of that laughing gas going straight to her brain showed me he's NOT there for the kids...He's there for himself! Instead he used a cheaper in house type of retainer to fix my teeth. When I moved out of state I found out I could not complete my treatment as Invisalign was not used. When I contacted his office I was told in a nutshell too bad. No refund of any kind. Also, he is so busy he could never stop to discuss my care. He is rude to the young people he employs which is a shame because I like them. It's taking a chance to use him even though he has a reputation for skilled work. His ethics are lacking.

THE BEST KEPT SECRET IN FLAGSTAFF!! By, DIAN W…read more I have never written a review before but feel compelled to do so. It was Friday of Memorial Day weekend. I took a bite of my bagel, and broke the tooth next to my front tooth right off. I could feel the blood rushing to my face. Oh no! It's a holiday weekend and I live in Scottsdale. I don't have a dentist in Flagstaff. I went through the phone book and started calling dentists. Some offices didn't answer. Some couldn't take me. Then, I got the sweetest gal on the phone at Peak Family Dental. She said, "Try to get here within the hour. After that our Dr. is booked." I raced over tooth-in-hand convinced that all I would need was a re-glue. After a couple of x-rays, I finally met Dr. Bryan Shanahan. He was super friendly and warm and after looking at the x-rays he told me that I had broken my tooth off inside my crown and that there was nothing for him to glue it back on to. He gave me a bunch of options one of which was to have a root canal and a dental implant. It seemed to make the most sense. But, where would I find an Endodontist? I have a whole weekend of activities planned and I was missing a front tooth! Dr. Shanahan explained to me that he could do everything. (I've had dental implants before and I know that these take months to heal and you have to walk around with a temporary in your mouth. Very often they'll give you something called a "flipper" it's a fake tooth that pretty much falls out of your mouth all the time. I was dreading that.). And then Dr. Shanahan explained to me that he teaches down at the dental school in Scottsdale and that he knows this technique where he can actually drill out the crown that fell out of my mouth; create an abutment and use my own crown as my temporary until my mouth heals. I've never heard of anyone being able to do that!! But I was all ears because that meant that I would walk out looking pretty much like I had the day before I broke my tooth. Shockingly, he was able to do all of that work in under 4 hours. (He had to work on me in-between his already scheduled patients.) Before I left, Dr.Shanahan warned me of the possible pain and swelling I might experience over the next few days. While I did have tenderness, I wouldn't call it pain. And I had no facial swelling at all. I couldn't believe how lucky I had been!! To find a Dentist who would take me on a holiday weekend; and who could do absolutely EVERYTHING!! It was such a stroke of luck and believe me...such a relief. I went on with my weekend as planned. I've become a SUPER FAN of Dr. Shanahan. I think you'll feel the same way.
