I'll just get my only complaint out of the way right away: the maps on their website are very low-res, you can't see the names of the trails very well, the trails you use to get to the yurts. However, there are some higher-res photos on this Yelp page. Also, they are very hand-holdy about all the rules for getting to the yurts. After talking with them, I get it. There are lots of Gumbies coming up from Phoenix with zero outdoor experience getting lost on trails. We are all pretty experienced in winter, trail, and off-trail travel, so as soon as we were able to convey that, we were good! These yurts are perfect. You have to hike to get into them, so you avoid any sort of crowds you'd have if you were car-camping. But, the hikes are really short, so you can still have a pretty bougie outdoor experience, and bring lots of heavy stuff! They also provide grills and port-o-potties. We stayed in the Columbine Yurt. There were 4 of us, and the fit was perfect! The stove can get the yurt nice and toasty, just sure the window flaps are closed so you can keep that heat in! This was a great place to stay while hiking nearby Humphreys Peak. I would absolutely come back! read more

This was our first stay in the Nordic Center Yurts and we had s great time. We are new to camping and this was a nice experience. We had plenty of wood and a hatchet to chip pieces off for tinder. You may want to bring your own fire starters they have use some old mail which was not paper and hard to catch/ smokey. We brought a pot and stove top coffee maker that we placed on top of the wood stove to boil water for coffee and oatmeal. There is a provider propane grill for cooking. We also brought our two dogs who had a great time. Lots of hiking on the trails. read more

I've been here several times. Always have a great time. The workers here are just so friendly. I love their attitude and willingness to help. Its a beautiful property with so much nature to take in. I just love the snowy landscape. Whether snowshoeing, skiing, snow biking, or renting a little hut for a night or 2 this place is awesome. I come here every year every winter. My girlfriend and I spent the weekend in one of the cabins at the Nordic Center. Overall, it was a great experience - but definitely overpriced. We arrived around 5:30pm on Friday evening January 11th - taking advantage of the winter "Late check in" on Fridays. We checked in, and spent $55 to rent showshoes and get trail passes for the weekend. In addition to the $140 I spent online to book the cabin for Friday and Saturday night. Ok, fine. We took two trips from the car to the cabin to get our stuff in. Better than paying $20 for the gear shuttle, and it felt good to try out the snowshoes. It was both of our first time in showshoes. The staff at the lodge was friendly and efficient in getting us moved in. A+ for them. We got a little lost on the way from the lodge to the cabin - but found it eventually with advice from other people out on the trails. The Nordic Center provides plenty of wood for the wood stove. They also provide newspaper and matches to get things started. Whoever had the place before us didn't leave us any kindling. Shame, but I was able to chop some fairly quickly with the hatchet that was provided. I brought my own just in case, but didn't have to use it. Got the fire started in about 5 minutes and fed it wood for about 2 hours until the cabin warmed up. Once it did - it got HOT! We ended up opening a window around midnight to moderate the temperature a bit. Saturday morning I used the propane grill outside (provided) to warm up some water for coffee. I somehow missed that this was available on the website and hiked in my own stove. Don't bother. The grill that FNC provides is a big two-burner and will do fine for food (brats, etc) or heating up water. It's got auto-ignition, but if that fails you can use matches too. We spent Saturday morning lounging around. Spent the afternoon showshoeing up Coyote trail, which was a great time. A blue run at about 2.5 miles round trip. Our first time in snowshoes and it took us an hour and 15 minutes. Not bad at all. A very enjoyable experience. Saturday night we warmed chili on the wood stove in the cabin. Took about an hour to warm it up on top of the wood stove with a metal pot. No worries. We weren't in any hurry. It got to about -8 F Saturday night. We didn't keep as careful track of the fire that night. I woke up and restarted it at midnight then again at 5am. Plenty warm. We brought too many blankets- but it was comfortable and when I was reading reviews on Yelp!, I didn't see how well the wood stove worked in (really) cold outdoor temperatures. As long as you know how to start a fire, don't worry about being cold. Once that stove warms up, you're good to go. The double bed was about as comfortable as the average hotel bed. Not great, but way better than sleeping on hard floor. We covered it with a thick summer sleeping bag for extra padding. The staff request that you STIR the port-o-potty in order to prevent it from freezing. Not a big deal, if you've got a strong stomach. I stirred it after every use and had no issues with it. Neither (to my knowledge) did my girlfriend. Plenty of (cheap) TP, but I brought a backup roll just in case. I took a few photos - Neglected to take pictures while the cabin was clean, so don't mind our mess. If you're looking for a rustic experience away form civilization, I recommend it - but expect to spend a bit of money in the process. read more

A few weekends ago we had our wedding ceremony and reception at the Flagstaff Nordic Center. For a while they've had the venue at the front of the center, but recently they opened up a more affordable option about a mile walk back on a nature trail next to the Sunflower and Columbine yurts. This space was provided with a 2 night stay in the yurts and the freedom to do whatever we wanted to the surrounding area for the wedding. I've had a very mixed experience working with the Flagstaff Nordic Center during the last year planning our wedding ceremony. I didn't opt to spend thousands of dollars on a wedding planner and decided to do it myself instead so I was very involved with every part of the planning process. Initially we started working with Tuesde to set up the contract for the venue. Overall, she was spotty on emails (it would take about a month to hear back typically) and when I would call it would go to voicemail saying they weren't accepting calls as it was their busy time of year. This was pretty inconvenient when trying to plan a wedding in an area that they were just testing out and had a lot of logistics. With the mile nature walk back to the venue, I knew that a majority of my family wouldn't want to or couldn't endure this. They offered to shuttle passengers from the front office back to the venue for a 15% additional service fee which we incorporated into our contract. The day before our wedding we started some initial set up where Evan and another girl (not Tuesde, but I couldn't get her name) brought up tables, chairs, and helped move the portapotties. This girl seemed like she didn't want to help, that she didn't understand simple instructions, and that she was just eager to leave work. After they had moved both of the portapotties, my mother-in-law asked to have one moved by their yurt which they said they would move the next day. I tipped them and they left. The girl came back the next day - there was another wedding going on in the front this day - she rudely asked where we wanted it because "it was the last time [she] was going to move it since it was going to take like 40 minutes". We discussed the shuttling service for later, which she seemed like she didn't want to do even though we paid extra for this service. Our guests found that there was a sign in the front office for the shuttle, stating that staff would return periodically from attending the other wedding to shuttle our guests. My mother-in-law voiced her concerns to this girl who kept smiling and trying to drive off as she was talking. Overall, very poor customer service from this girl in particular. We felt that our wedding was second to the wedding in the front of the venue and that our event was less important. Evan was fantastic and is the reason for 3 stars. He was courteous and made sure our needs were taken care of even though his friends were getting married in the front venue. He took over shuttling services and helped out until 8:30 PM that night to get our guests safely back to their cars. If you are choosing to have a rustic forest wedding at the Mariposa Wedding area, I would request to work with Evan as your event will most likely go more smoothly. read more

This was my first time staying in a yurt and was very excited for the experience. Being a regular camper i am used to roughing it in the woods or desert. The reason for the 3 stars goes as follows. There is a bit of misinformation regarding thr yurts in the website and the email they send you. I stayed in a front country yurt and in the website stated it was a self check in and right next to the lodge. But in the email they call for a 3 pm check in and being upwards of 3 miles away from the lodge. Those particular requirements are for the back country yurts and are not specified in the email. Phone tag was played for a week to clarify everything. Second: everyone i spoke to on the phone said the back door of the lodge was open all night long (for showers and restroom usage). There is even a sign in the yurt saying it was open 24/7. However, when we tried using it at 7pm it was locked. I was a late check in and called ahead to notify them and get any specific details. Apparently there was a miscommunication between employees and they ended up locking the doors. They apologized for it Third: around 3 am they started running engines and snow plows. A man came to aplogizes in the morning for the noise. I, fortunately, took sleeping meds and did not hear a thing. My gf was not so fortunate. The engines woke her up. As far as staying in the yurt. It was awesome. I think everyone should stay one. Especially in the cold ass winter. I just didn't like the misinformation and miscommunication of it. read more

We drove from Tolleson to come to this to have the kids go down some hills, well, first they want $20 to park and do the snow play. The staff were rude as hell. Got mad when we were walking to this snow play area and we're in the wrong place, and instead of directing yelled and we're unprofessional and rude. Going into the very small corded area there was nowhere for the kids to play, one small patch of snow to roll down and the rest was literally rocks, rocks everywhere and no actual snow to play in, if you attempted to throw a snowball, it was hard and not throwable. We went for literally 10 minutes, got a refund and left. Definitely not worth the money! Avoid and park towards the sides of the road! You'll get more play for your family! read more

My wife and our 5 year old twins rented a front country cabin for two nights during the first week of August. This was a great getaway wihout any major saccrifices in comfort! The cabin has no electricity or water but the lodge is a 30 second walk away and has full bathrooms, showers and sinks with regular water service. In the main area of the lodge there are also a couple of electircal outlets which we used to charge our phones and tablet (we watched movies when the kids were asleep!). They supply an LED latern which provided good light for most things. We brought flashlights (for late nigh bathroom trips) and headlamps (for reading). There were several big thunderstorms during our stay and the cabin stayed warm and dry. I was inpressed with how well the roof muffled the noise from the rain. The mattresses on the double bed and the bunks were objectively decent and much better than a camp-mat on the ground. Still, after two nights my wife and I were a bit sore! Between storms we made a couple of campfires and used the provided grill to cook our meals. The grill has a two burner regular grill area as well as a round side burner for a pot or pan. The kids loved wandering around the area by the cabin by themselves and we took a few long hikes into the woods as well. We saw lots of chipmunks and squirrels and even saw a deer. We walked past a few of the back country yurts, they looked roomy and had great locations deeper in the woods. I have T-Mobile which occasionally had some service, I could sometimes send and recieve text messages from the parking area and I could see my new emails but was unable to open them. I couldn't make any calls. Not a big deal, just thought this would be helpful info. This was a great getaway for a family that does not really rough-it! We could park just behind the cute cabin and we had acess to the real bathrooms. It is a 15 minute drive to town to pick up supplies each day (Sprouts, Whole Foods, Natural Grocers!). If you want to do things a bit more basic the there are tent sites which are also near the lodge and there are the backcountry yurts. This is a great facility with lots of options depending on your desires. This could become something we do every summer. read more

Miles of groomed trails for x-country. Rentals of diff. types of skis, snowshoes, sleds, ski toboggans for babies. The cost for our family of 4, with trail pass was $128 - quite $$$. (I think they should waive trail pass fee w/rental prices). Was a good day though - even our 8 yr old did the trails no prob. (her 1st time!). Staff helpfull & very friendly. Easy to find, just past snowbowl exit, right off hwy 180. If you stay in the historic part of flagstaff, off route 66 (try aspen suites) this is only 15 mins drive. read more

My cousin had her wedding here. She is the super outdoorsy type and the complete opposite of a bridezilla. This place was perfect. It even poured rain and it was perfect. Nothing beats the beauty of nature if you ask me. The only reason I'm not giving 5 stars is because I didn't exactly use the facilities. Only one couple invited to the wedding had the guts to stay in a Yurt. I mean, I know myself. I am not that rugged when I need to get ready for a wedding. I need the basics, like running water, to be a given under those circumstances. Call me high maintenance, at least I know my own limits. read more

My parents have been cross country skiing since they were young Lumberjacks at NAU. They decided it was high time for their offspring to take up the same hobby, so they piled three unwilling young adults into my father's truck and took us to Flagstaff Nordic Center. Hilarity did not ensue. I'm pretty sure they had a coupon because, as I understand, cross country skiing can get quite pricey. Plus, they are both educators which means they are always looking for cheap entertainment. The employees at the center were very helpful, and even though my gear looked like it came straight from the 1980s it worked well enough. My parents quickly left my brothers and I in the dust, and thanks to the beginners trail that the center carves into the sides of the moderate trail we were able to complete the loop. My God was it painful though. I fell every few feet and got my skis tangled something fierce. I really appreciated that the center sent out patrols every now and then to check up on skiers. They even gave us some hot chocolate at the end of the experience to help us warm up. A nice touch! Just a note: The Flagstaff Nordic Center is also extremely beautiful during the warmer seasons. I've gone mountain biking on the same cross country ski trails and with much more success. This is a great place to visit year around! read more

Awesome campsite and facility! I stayed here for a HAHGW meeting with Arizona Game and Fish. I loved being in the woods, but fully covered with a large tent in a safe location. Good thing it was sturdy because we did get rain! The Forest Service has a nice cabin with restrooms and a shower. There are a few yurts and other small cabins located a 10 minute walk away. In the winter, this place is home to cross country skiing and dog sledding, as well as hunting during the appropriate season. Make sure to check the weather Phoenicians! The weather changes quickly and can be cold at night even in the summer time. It was 55 at night when I was here in July. So plan for the weather! read more

We went on one of the first weekends for the summer back country sites! We rented a yurt and a front country cabin, and it was great! Really lovely experience, and the woods up there are just enchanting. The large back country yurt was easy to find, maybe a 10-15 minute walk from where the parking is located. It was up in a gorgeous meadow, and was way bigger than anticipated! The wood was all stocked and ready to go, which was really helpful, and the BBQs are propane which were easy to get going. The people who worked there (Dan, Mike, and Wendell) were very helpful, although they were not very prompt at responding to phone calls and/or emails. Our group had a blast, and we are already talking about when we can get back up there. As far as stuff to do, there are several great hikes right there on the site, and then some that are not even 3 miles driving distance (lava river caves, etc.). Definitely good for big groups of singles, families, or couples! read more

Stayed in one of the further back yurts this fall and had a wonderful time. It's tricky to navigate in the dark, especially if you're bad at reading maps... so don't make my mistake. Our stay was during a busy week with a marathon as well as many Flagstaff events and we still felt taken care of and welcome. it was a great weekend. We hadn't X-Country skied for years (more than 20). Its like getting on a bicycle again. It was great. we arrived early before the crowds on a Saturday just before the season ending. No one there. it was awesome. the staff were quick and friendly and we really had a good time. Boy are my legs muscles screaming at me today but hey it feels GREAT to be alive again in the cool MT air gliding across the well groomed paths. I will definitely go again a lot next year. read more

My husband and I were on a road trip and looking for some place to stay near the Coconino National Forest. While researching, I cam across the Flagstaff Nordic Center. We decided to stay in one of their small yurts and it was awesome! The yurt was nice and new and they provided us with sleeping pads and wood for the wood burning stove and water. It was perfect for us because we had been camping prior and this was the perfect accommodation for us. The prices were definitely reasonable! We arrived late and happened to meet one of the owners, he was very friendly and very helpful. We really stumbled upon a great place- only wished we lived closer to Flagstaff (we're in Northern California)! read more

last year there wasn't enough snow. with a groupon nearing expiration, we had to use it this year and headed up yesterday for some snowshoeing. it's nothing fancy. just a cabin and dirt parking lot on the side of the road where you sign in. since we were renting snowshoes, we were then directed to a yurt behind the lodge to pick up our gear. after that, it's pretty much off you go. the majority of visitors here are cross country skiers. apparently you can rent backcountry yurts to sleep in. there are miles and miles of trails for the skiers and plenty of miles for snowshoers. although whatever you do, no matter what, DON'T WALK ON THE CROSS COUNTRY SKI PATH!!!!!!! or else a bothersome old lady (whom doesn't work there, but annoyed us anyway) will make sure to let you know you are doing it wrong! anyway....the staff was friendly and seemed helpful. the trails are very well marked. waterproof hiking boots, water resistant pants and jacket are recommended. layering is key as you will heat up rather quickly traipsing through the woods. read more

Spent a lovely cool August weekend in the spruce cabin. Nice change from tent camping. Between the flush toilets in the lodge and the roof over our heads during the late night thunderstorm I felt we got quite the deal at $45/night. Will definitely try to make it back up for a few nights next summer. read more

We did a beginner lesson, with my 6-years old. The cost was $50, which is reasonable for adults but I wish they had a price for kids. My little one was done with the lesson in 60 minutes. I would say the lesson is more for adults. I did learn some tips/tricks. The first lesson started at 11:30am. After the lesson, we were all starving. They sell snacks here but I brought my own and I am glad I did. read more

WEDDING VENUE: We booked the site for a formal wedding for 150 people. The site is terrific, but the staff is less than helpful. The employee on duty introduced himself to us in the morning and said he would be of service to us.When he was contacted about the toilets being full, he said, "I will put some cleaner in there, they will be fine." They were full and disgusting. He was informed with ample time to take care of it prior to the start of the wedding. He did nothing and it was dreadful. The afternoon of the wedding we were informed that the tablecloths had not been delivered (we had to go to an outside vendor and pay for our own which did not arrive until literally 5 minutes before the wedding began.) Trying to set up 25 tables in 5 minutes created a nightmare, and come to find out the day after the wedding, the tablecloths were on site all the time. The employee seemed very unconcerned about our dilemma and just shrugged. We were completely on our own to figure it out. The tables and all of the chairs at the ceremony site and in the dining tent were very dirty from being in storage and we were assured told they would be wiped down. It had not been done and 30 minutes before the wedding when we requested to have them wiped down the employee made the comment, "Well I guess I could do that, but the first gust of wind will just make them dusty again." I insisted and he got a bucket of water and a rag and half heartedly wiped off the just the seats in the dining tent, leaving the backs of the chairs dirty. He did not wipe off the ceremony seats. We had 150 guests arriving in dress clothes to sit on dirty chairs. If you are going to advertise this site for a wedding venue, you should staff it as such as well and train your staff in customer service Everything I have cited above is nothing that is above and beyond what would be considered reasonable and included in the price. The nordic center is a hub for the outdoor enthusiast. The 40-something mile trail system gave my buddy and I plenty of space to mountain bike and explore the back woods at 8000 feet elevation. I stayed in a Yurt for the first time, and it was better than tent camping (and cheap for a real shelter). The couple of employees who run the center leave the "lodge" unlocked so you can hit the restrooms if you don't want to use the outhouses or mother nature, and also get fresh tap water (which was surprisingly good). When fire restrictions aren't in place, you can make a camp fire outside of your yurt or cabin, and also use your wood stove. Want to know the best part? It is dead silent up there at night, which means a good night sleep. I'm already excited to go back in the winter to try cross-country skiing and set up shop in one of their small cabins. read more

As a season pass holder at Flagstaff Nordic Center, now Flag Nordic Village, for many years past, I decided not to buy a pass this year and just buy day passes when I wanted to ski. I was dismayed to learn that they have closed the Nordic Center Monday through Thursday for all but season pass holders. To do this in mid ski season forces all those who want to ski during the week to buy a pass. This policy represents a contemporary money making greed that is so prevalent in this country and is not representative of nordic skiing tradition which has always embraced a concept of providing recreation and well being for the local community. Shame on you Flagstaff Nordic Village. You should follow the example of more traditional nordic ski areas who cater to locals who love to ski and not be so interested in the dollar. The cabin was clean and there was plenty of wood to start a fire in the fire pit. We rented mountain bikes and rode them to a beautiful high country meadow covered with wildflowers. I recently stayed in Lily (front country yurt) over a weekend. A friend had recommended it and it was so much cheaper than staying in a hotel! I had a blast. They provide you with pads to lay on, firewood in your room if you request it, a lamp, a stove, and cleaning supplies. They have a lodge where you can use the restroom 24 hrs and it is just a short walking distance from the yurts. The yurts also have propane grills out front with propane if you want to cook anything. We ended up cooling our breakfasts on the top of the fireplace that was inside the yurt. It is in a beautiful area and it is very peaceful and quiet. I will definitely be back! The staff is very friendly and accommodating. read more
