The ambiance of this place was wonderful. Many hibachi places can be a little old or look dinky. Here, the walls and surroundings were clean and modern. The light up tables are a particularly nice touch. The food itself was terrific. The only downside were the portions, not much food for what you pay compared to other hibachi places. My guest requested hibachi, and who would think NYC would have such few options. While Benihana was the obvious first choice, the reviews were less than stellar (it was OK when I was there over 10 years ago, but I suppose has gone downhill). So, a yelp search led me here. Turned out to be a great option. The hibachi service and show was up to par, and the food was cooked perfectly. Will definitely come back again if I have another hibachi request. PS. I celebrated my birthday here last Saturday and had a wonderful time. The food was phenomenal and the presentation was very entertaining. One thing I will say though - and this isn't a negative - this is a restaurant where the time of reservation is verrrry important since it's on a table basis. Came here after researching to find a nice hibachi place to take my boyfriend to celebrate. Inside it's very nice. We made a reservation and got there early, so we sat at the bar in the meantime. We happened to be there in time for happy hour also which was really nice. Cheap sake bombs and sangrias! They even had some food options for happy hour but we didn't try any since we were waiting to be seated for dinner. We were seated in the far back corner of the restaurant at a table with a bunch of other young people. It was nice to not be put with a family with a bunch of children. I checked in with Yelp so we received a free appetizer, which we picked to be braised duck tacos. These were tasty! I ordered the lobster and shrimp hibachi combination and my boyfriend got the filet mignon and shrimp combination. Both were very tasty! There is an up-charge for fried rice, which is typical of hibachi places, but so worth it. I've been to many hibachi dinners and I do feel that the "show" portion of the dinner could have been better. It seemed quick and not complete. Overall, the food was really good, especially the filet mignon and lobster. Food and service was really good, but with their being so many restaurants in New York and since we live in Jersey, I'm not sure that it stands out enough to come back again..but we'll see! read more

Maybe 6-7 little pieces of steak. Steak was cold too. Also, they give mandatory 18% without telling you and staple the signed slip on top so it makes you look like you need to tip again. I came here for a friends birthday. The location is awesome with good bars next door. The wait was 20 minutes as they try to full each grill table with as many people. The place itself is clean and has a cool atmosphere. The food was amazing. We order ahead so the grill master can get the ingredients. If you like leisure with deciding on the menu or ordering later this spot is not recommended but most hibachi spots do this. The drinks were greatly balanced but expensive. So, tonight was actually my first time ever being at a hibachi restaurant. Although most New Yorkers tend to flock to Benihana, I decided to stay a little closer to home. I must say, Flame did no disappoint. I'm sure they're busier on the weekends so, I was more than happy to avoid a huge crowd. My mother in law, and my 12 year old daughter accompanied me. Neither of them had been to a Hibachi before either. One thing I can say is this, you blink and it's over. My reservation was for 7pm, after allowing time for the grill setup and entertainment, I was able to finish eating my meal by 8:07pm. My chef sang Justin Beiber while he flipped food into mouths and joked with us all. I'm not sure if he provided his name. If not, that may be info to provide to the patrons. The chefs provide the entertainment, why not have them be a part of the dazzling reviews? For 2 adults and a child to eat, my bill still fell under $100 which is awesome. My only complaint would be that I did not receive a menu for the sushi rolls with the drink and habichi menus. I thought perhaps, they no longer offered sushi rolls. Then, someone at our table ordered some. It's a fun place, the food is good and reasonably priced. They carry a large variety of wine. Their mixed drink menu had some appeal. Flame is a new UWS restaurant that's attracted crowds for the hibachi, where they cook it in front of you. Not being a big fan of restaurant theater, we took a pass on that and instead just wanted the sushi and the appetizers. Is the sashimi/sushi good and fresh? Yes. Is it that differentiable from, say, Momoya? Not at all. In fact, it's definitely not as creative or good. What brought it down to 3, though, was the rather insulting P2P (price to portions ratio). The "dim sum sampler" consists only of 6 pieces -- basically a single dim sum dish you could get downtown, not a comprehensive sampler. Moreover, to the dim sum veteran, it's thoroughly Americanized and inauthentic. There are better places in the city to get either Asian fusion, dim sum, or sushi/sashimi. PASS. read more

I ordered their mango salmon, Alaskan, and eel roll as part of their three-roll special, which came with a soup, salad and drink for around $17. Came here for dinner. The place was two blocks from the 81st Street train station. When I entered, I saw that there is a bar. I told the host that I am here for hibachi. I told them I have a reservation, but they don't see it in their system, possibility due to that I didn't come at the time I was supposed to arrive at. After seating down, I ordered their combination of sirloin steak and free range chicken with an appetizer of golden tofu, the curry chicken samosa, and the duck tacos. The menu was a diversity of various Asian cuisines. The grill is a smokeless one, where the air duct is next to the grill. While I was there, I saw that today was someone's birthday. The chef who cooked our food told us that it's his second day working at the restaurant. The food was usual. The air duct didn't collect all of the smoke from grilling the food. Great neighborhood Japanese restaurant. We went on a Monday night around 8 pm. Restaurant was busy. Hibachi was full so we sat in a booth near the sushi prep area. We ordered the wonton soup and a variety of sushi. The soup was warm and filling and we liked all of the sushi we ordered. We took advantage of a special that was for 2 classic plus 2 special rolls for $38. The special also came with an avocado salad which we didn't realize until it arrived. Great, attentive service. Let me start by saying, this review is not for Hibachi grill service. My family and I (party of 5) came with the intent to have a Hibachi dining experience however; we were informed since we didn't have a reservation we would have to wait over an hour for a Hibachi table. We opted for a regular table. We were quickly seated at a booth towards the back of the restaurant. We waited a bit for our server to come to our table and greet us as he was the only person tending to 3 other tables. Once he arrived to our table and took our drink/appetizer order, the service sped up. Both the kitchen and bar was quick with producing our order; the same holds true for our entrees. My biggest issue with my dining experience is that nothing wowed me or left a lasting impression. I ordered a Shiso Mai Tai as my cocktail - once again it wasn't bad but it did not leave me wanting more. My appetizer was the calamari - this was probably the best thing I had all night. My entree was pineapple basil rice with shrimp - this was good but, I didn't like the raisins in the rice. My husband had the duck spring roll as his appetizer - it was not good....at all!!! There was more veggie in the spring roll than duck - but the spring roll dough was pretty good. (We scraped out the filling and ate it by itself)! For his entree, he had the roasted duck breast with white rice. His entree was the worst thing we had for the night. The duck breast was very dry!!! I think it was overcooked, and the entree lacked some sort of sauce to eat with the rice. Wow!! Just wow!! Hands down my favorite Hibachi place that I've ever been to and that's even including more than the ones we've been to on expensive cruises. Everything about this place is original. The drinks and the food are out of this world. My only critique is that they had a rookie chef cooking for us, but even he was still highly entertaining and cooked some great food!! The owner was amazing and super complimentary with service and a little extra :) The special rolls were a bit pricy but the original rolls were pretty reasonable and comparable to other places around. On UWS there really are no hibachi places so this was a good idea. Cons: Our tall waiter was not very attentive and he took a long time to get us our food and checks. But the food was worth the wait! Came here for Hibachi on a Saturday evening for a friend's birthday dinner. If you reserve with a large group for the Hibachi seating, they're very particular about timing. You get 1.5 hrs from start time. The food is typical of any Hibachi grills and heavy on butter, oil and garlic. A absolute gem in upper west side. This place went above and beyond my expectations. The menu is full of delicious options. This is mainly a hibachi restaurant but they have all kind of Asian fusion foods with a awesome bar for drinks. The restaurant also have a section if you do not want hibachi, which we did as we were not craving hibachi. We order some dim sum appetizers which was surprising really good for a hibachi restaurant and had few cocktails from the bar. The staff were super welcoming. We told the waiter it was our first time here and he gave us suggestions on everything on the menu. Our water was constantly refilled as well. We will definitely come back next time just to try the hibachi! read more
