My husband and I were in NYC on business and Akura was only a few blocks from our subway stop and our meeting. We were surprised to see it was highly rated and decided to give it a try. We were not disappointed!! This restaurant on the Upper East Side looks unassuming but the quality, service and prices were all excellent. We started with pan fried gyoza and fried shumai. Not every restaurant offers fried shumai and I prefer it to steamed shumai, which sometimes has a slimy texture on the outside. Both appetizers were some of the best I've ever had, crispy, fresh and delicious. I ordered the lunchbox special with beef teriyaki. I couldn't believe the portion for the price. A lot of places make you choose soup or salad. This came with both, along with a California roll, white rice, some veggies, steamed shumai and the protein -- a choice of teriyaki chicken, beef or salmon. You could also order a sushi or sashimi lunch box for a bit more. The ginger dressing tasted fresh and delicious, with just a little spice. My husband ordered California rolls and spicy tuna rolls, also a lunch special. He said it was the best spicy tuna he's ever had! Akura is a bit off the beaten path for places we normally visit in Manhattan but we may just have to come back! Downside? No alcohol but you could bring your own with no corkage fee if you wanted. They served water, soda and even hot tea in stainless steel tumblers. I liked them for cold beverages but it was a bit odd for green tea. Not a dealbreaker at all - but interesting enough that I noticed! I kinda want the same glasses for my house as they kept drinks nice and cold! Very friendly staff, quick service - well deserving of 5 stars.

I went for a quick dinner with my cousin and sister on a Tuesday night, and you don't need a reservation! We got the Akura Special (for two) and a three roll maki set to share and it was plenty of food! The service is amazing - they always go above and beyond and the owners are lovely! They also give a free appetizer when you sit down, we each got a bowl of miso soup! Would definitely recommend and would go again in the UES!

W sushi and W service! 100% recommend and don't forget the kani salad fireeeeeee you should gooooooo and try ittttttttttttt

Was walking in the area with my mom and passed by on the way to a bakery, but good thing we turned back. One of the staff members opened the door for us. It's wheelchair accessible. Attentive and helpful staff. Great first impression of the place - garden decor, chandeliers/ambient lighting. Got the Creme Anglaise souffle pancakes - with fresh fruits, very light and fluffy, not too sweet. Ice cream sounded simple on the menu - though just a small scoop, it came with red bean paste, fresh fruits so not bad @$6. Rose latte is rosy of course with crushed petals. Liked the food presentation, cute spoons. Will surely return. Restroom available.

The soufflé pancake was unfortunately quite mushy, without much of a bite to it. The salmon was fresh but the cuts were on the thinner side, so it was decent but nothing extraordinary. The aesthetics look nice and welcoming, but the service was more cold and distanced; would definitely improve the mood if the servers were more social and friendly! Our server forgot one of our drinks, and didn't ask if we wanted our lattes sweetened or not, so we asked for simple syrup to sweeten our drinks ourselves. To our surprise, we were charged for simple syrup as shown on the receipt as a custom item...never have I been to any restaurant or cafes where you had to pay to sweeten your own drink. Unfortunately, this cheapened the experience and made it feel like you're being nickeled and dimed by a pretty restaurant. Not sure if this is the restaurant's/owner's rules or just the server being incompetent/not efficiently trained. We dined at 2pm on September 9th, 2026, as to not get other servers in trouble! Overall, Vert Frais definitely has a lot of potential of being an amazing Japanese brunch spot, so I hope this review can help them reach their truest potential! Thank you for reading and best of luck! (:

The yakitori here is very tasty. We loved the veggie skewers (okra and shishito peppers. The salmon belly is actually just salmon pieces and not the belly party. The enoki beef was little too salty. The squid, beef and scallops were very tasty. The veggies tempura were freshly fried and delicious. Could have been drained a little better. Salmon crispy rice was a hit but the star of the show was the sushi and sashimi deluxe and the blue Toro roll. Amazingly fresh. The passion toro was a little too sweet and fishy for us and had no passion fruit taste. Service here is amazing. Dashi Okume sells ... you guessed it ... dashi. They sell several kinds, and you can taste all of them there in the shop before deciding which to take home with you (I tried them all and went home with one bag of vegetable dashi and one bag of sweet shellfish dashi). They also make custom-made dashi. You can choose from around 30 ingredients - dried fish, seaweed, mushrooms, and vegetables. They grind it up and put into individual bags for you. Such a fun idea, but I thought I should try some of their pre-made dashi options before creating mine own. They also sell miso, rice, noodles, rice seasoning, seaweed, tea, and other items. I picked up some Japanese mustard, seaweed, and rice seasoning to take home with my dashi. Beyond being a great shop, they also have a cafe area where they offer a teishoku set meal - you pick your fish, which comes with tea, rice, miso soup, pickles, and sides. They also offer an omakase popup. The shop is beautiful, and the service was very friendly and helpful. I'll certainly return for more shopping but next time I plan to make a meal of it and try their teishoku set.

My boyfriend was the one making the dashi, so I perused the fun goods while he built his base. The dashi does take some time to make, so you can select your blend, then leave for a while and come back later.
