Stewed Oxtail, Rice & Kidney Peas, Steamed Cabbage & Carrots

Best in the city! Generous with the servings, great drink selection. Rice and peas has the perfect amount of coconut milk, cabbage and carrots aren't over cooked (still has crunch) and oxtail full of flavor and tender.

Oxtail, Cabbage, with Rice and Peas

All I can say is what happened? Flames used to have the best oxtail in the city. This is my third time going and the oxtails were tough. They lacked the flavor that they usually have. It tasted like one seasoning was dominating yesterday, and it was not the right one. The cashier added a beef patty and charged me for it. I do not like their beef patties so I would not have ordered it. I called to inform them of the mistake, and they wanted me to drive 25 minutes to get a refund, when it could have been reversed. No way. There was not even an apology. She said I could drive. No thank you. I decided what the heck, I can taste the beef patty. No thank you again. I threw all of the beef patty away. I I will go back to the one on Blue Hill Ave to see if the food and service are any better.

    Curried Goat

Wow just had the Curried Goat here and it blew me away. So much depth of flavor and no gaminess to speak of and ooooh so tender. Plenty of reason to come here. They have a plethora of Jamaican favorites and they are all good believe. Thank me later.

Spoiled curry goat, rice and peas w/ mixed vegetables. Worst ever!
    Johana M.

I been eating from this establishment for years. Today I decided I'm not going back. I ordered a Large curry goat, rice and peas, and mixed vegetables. The food goat was spoiled. It must have been left over because she piled the goat on my plate and they never piled it on like that and after tasting it I know for a fact the food was spoiled. They fail to understand that because I'm not speaking Jamaican my family is Jamaican and I know good food and today it was at its worst. Not everyone knows good or great food. Flames your going up in Flames!!!

Solid Jamaican food. Always there when you need it. I typically stop by for a beef patty or jerk chicken plate!

Went in for a beef patty with cheese and came out with a tasteless, government cheese filled flake crust.

For sides, we got Black Rice, Sweet Plantains, Green Plantains, Rice & Beans. Wow, what a superb meal. Everything was delicious. They also go a little light in the salt which I loved. There wasn't a single dish in there that I didn't like. The chicken was tender, the stew and legumes were flavorful, the rice was well cooked, the tostones were crispy, and the sweet plantains were truly ripe. I honestly wish they had a combo where they could do three mains and six sides cuz I would be into that! And a special shout out to the compostable packaging. Loved it.

Unfortunately, my experience fell short of expectations. While the staff was friendly and welcoming, there was a little lack of coordination in the service but not so much that it detracted from the overall service. I decided to order the fried chicken, hoping for a flavorful experience, that Creole food is typical of, but I was sorely disappointed to find that it was completely devoid of seasoning--absolutely none! The taste was bland, and I found myself unable to enjoy it at all. After a few bites, I realized I couldn't force myself to eat it, so I ended up tossing it in the trash. Given that I was already some distance away from the restaurant at my next stop, returning it wasn't an option. I did take the time to call the restaurant and voice my concerns, but they l didn't offer any form of credit or compensation for the issue, so it only reinforced my decision not to return, as I couldn't see myself taking another chance on a meal that fell so flat. Overall, it was a disappointing experience, especially considering the hype surrounding this place.

You order first then pay at the end of the line. The folks behind the counter are nice and they give you so much food! I was deciding between the oxtail and the jerk chicken.. but someone mentioned that they have the most tender oxtails here so I went for that. The total was around $23, which seems a lot but this easily is 2-3 servings, so it's really worth the price. The oxtail was indeed very tender and flavourful. The rice & peas were also filled with flavour and cooked well. The cabbage I'm not a huge fan of, but I gave it a try. Will probably skip that next time. 10/10 will be back! Maybe for the jerk chicken.

My go-to box lunch is always fried chicken, rice&peas with curry gravy and raw veg.. di ting UP.. I even got a likkle piece of goat spill over with the gravy. *blush* The fried chicken was nostalgic of high school days. My husband got a mix box with curry goat and jerk chicken, he wanted food but they only had boiled dumpling at the time so he got rice snd peas. He enjoyed his meal too. We also got a small cup of their carrot juice to share - just like mummy makes it mmm. They had carrot cake and red velvet cake the time. I was going to go with the carrot since it was easter time but the 2 ladies I asked rated the red velvet higher so I got that. The red velvet cake was SO light and airy I basically inhaled it. They have high ledges to stand and eat your food but no seating available. The ladies in the shop were nice. Order with confidence + surity and yuh good.

A large is a meal and a half and the pricing is still reasonable for what you get. Some may debate me on the filling but the skins are not to be compared. I have been coming here for 30+ years and the skins have actually gotten a bit better, even though they were already great. New staffing had definitely improved the service. I can remember many years of having to get there by 6:00 if you wanted roti because they were on the last batch of boneless chicken and curried potatoes. In recent years they seem to have gotten better with managing portions and volume. The location is tough. I usually park on the side street just above them because the double parking mayhem of Blue Hill Avenue is not worth the stress. Few people ever dine in. There are a couple of booths but the business is almost entirely takeout. I do miss the Tremont Street/South End and Roslindale locations but I am so glad that Blue Hill Ali's is going strong!
