I've gone to Flanagan's over a dozen times. The prices have always been great and I've never had a problem with service. Everybody has different experi menxes, but a lot of the reviews I read make no sense or are super picky. I've always found this place to be a decent pace to go. Flanagan's Stop & Shop - The best cider ever! - Beer, Wine & Spirits Near Me - Appleton, Wisconsin

The place smells like mold and mildew and the owner has a stick up his butt. Wasn't going to say a word about the mold smell until the owner was unkind. I parked in their lot 10 minutes before close and the owner drove by in his jeep, yelled at me saying I couldn't park there and said he was calling the cops for all the cars in there. It was basically like being scolded for walking on someone's lawn. Ok old man LOL. I was going to be parked there for 5 minutes. You won't be gettin' my business and I wouldn't recommend the place to anyone else, especially if you have asthma. Why is it so hard to be a kind human being these days? Such a bummer. read more

I really like the selection they have at Flanagan's. There are few varieties of Whisky that I find tough to locate anywhere else. They also have good prices on beer. One negative is the rebate system. They are always advertising great rebate deals, but I have been turned down for a mailed-in rebate on multiple occasions because Flanagan's receipts do not include an item description or UPC. There is literally no way to confirm you have actually purchased the item applicable to the rebate. Also, please stop advertising that Dachs "Tastes Just Like Yuengling." I had such an incredible experience with Flanagan's. About two years ago my partner had to put his dog down and I was living in a different state. After trying to find multiple delivery services for liquor, I came across this sweet shop. A woman told me they don't typically do that but would be happy to accommodate. She picked out, delivered and included a hand written card to my parents home, a few miles away. This was an incredible experience and I will not forget that level of customer service! I have recently been introduced to this place when I stumbled across it in my travels. I agree with the review before mine. Good beer selection (everything from piss jock beer i.e Beer30, to a vast selection of microbrews). On the other hand the wine selection and presentation is crap. I spent quite a while walking around trying to find wine varietals I liked. The wine is not put in any kind of easily findable order, nor does it look like it has been touched in a good while. The champagne is in 3 or 4 different places in the store that are not even close to each other. Also I agree that when you go to a store that contains as much wine as this one does, you would expect that the staff would be able to answer any questions about the wine as well as be able to know what they are talking about. Now comes the best part. The owner will kiss up too you and make you feel like a the best customer ever, unless your black. The staff has been instructed by the owner , and I quote, "If a black person comes into this store, you are required to call someone to have them watched". Definitely not a store I will be going to ever again and will be passing the word on. read more

I was in the town, visiting family unexpectedly. When foraying into foreign territory (I'm from Kentucky, y'all), I always enjoy finding local or regional beer offerings. I treaded slowly and quietly away from my family obligations (read: in-law visit) and found this place nestled in a downtown shopping district. I had but minutes to spare, but the selection of craft beers was extremely good, causing me to hyperventilate because I simply didn't have the time to read each label and make the difficult decision of which bottles to buy. However, I finally made my selections and purchased a New Glarus sampler pack as well as a smattering of other bottles that represented a variety of breweries and styles. The lady who checked me out was helpful and friendly, and I left with beer: end of transaction. This may have possibly been the final time that I will visit this establishment in my lifetime (long story of why we were in Appleton at all, but that's both irrelevant and downright uninteresting). I appreciate a liquor store that has a good beer selection, and I rarely look at anything else. I don't like hard alcohol, and know about as much about wine as I do about nuclear fission (you don't know me so I guess I should tell you that I don't know much about nuclear fission). So, this place was great for me. Visit it if you like craft beer, wine, spirits or fission. Oh by the way, the entrance is in the back of the store now. read more

The positives for Flanagan's: they might have something new beer-wise for you. The negatives: everything else. The staff is neither friendly nor helpful. Not rude by any means, but the type of employee that will wave vaguely in the direction of the item you're looking for instead of taking you there. That's fine, it's a liquor store, I don't need you to be first in customer service, I guess. What I absolute will not abide is garbage masked by the word "savings". Maybe it was my mistake to assume that the margarita mix discounted during the Thanksgiving weekend was not expired. (It was, by several months. Gross.) Maybe it was my fault to assume that if a business heavily advertises the mail-in-rebate on their vodka, that they will give you a receipt that allows you to, you know, get the rebate. (They don't.) Stop in here if you're desperate and in the neighborhood. I got burned and am never going back. This also means I won't be patronising the restaurant either. The customer service is crap. I went today, 1/17/21, went to buy a case of Crown Royal because it was a good price. Instead of, taking a case from the floor I thought I would ask. The guy working there said he was busy. So I patiently waited. He then walked pass me and ignored me. So I figured I would just get the case from the floor. ON my way to the checkout he asks me where I got that case. I told him from the floor because you did not want to help me. He then responds you know there are 6 large bottles in there, is that what you want? I said yes it is. I then said there is a mail in rebate. He then responds you don't get the rebate here. The checkout lady was pleasant. So I asked do I go online to pick up my rebate. She said she has them and would give me one. She said that when picking up a case the customer is to ask. I said I did and he was too busy. So I said fuck it I would get the case from the floor. I will not go back to Flanagans. I will pay a little extra to a business that will appreciate my business. Flanagan's apparently does not need my money and I do not want to support a business who feels I need them. read more

I stopped for some New Year's Eve refreshments today and was once again disappointed. It was the "last straw" for me. i want to share my experience as advice to others that are looking for single bottles of that "latest and greatest" hard-to-find craft beers. I've always enjoyed pouring over the huge selection of single bottles - finding new beers to try every week. But over the course of 2016 (after talking with the owner about adding 400+ more beers to his selection) the prices have steadily gone up. For awhile the variety of beers outweighed these increases. But what I encountered today has made me put this store on the do not buy from list. Example: New Glarius has a new beer out called Scream IPA. It's $10.99 a four pack at Flanagan's. A single bottle is $5.99 a piece. What?!?. Same with Fantasy Factory. $9 a six pack or $3.69 a single. I understand trying to make a bit of money, but a 200% mark up? No thanks. Most of the singles are this way. I advise people to try the many other options first, like: Woodman's, Festival Foods, Pick N Save, Shopko Express before going to Flanagan's. Unless you are looking for a special import, don't over pay for something you can get elsewhere. read more

I've been going to the Stop and Shop for nearly my entire life. Back in the day, they used to have their own special dirty party favors section. Well those days are gone and so are the packages of fake vomit and nudie-girl lighters. What's left is a chintzy liquor store with a terrible wine selection, but a beer selection that's somewhat redeemable. All these years, i've never thought of Flanagan's as a place to buy anything other than a giant bottle of brandy, a six pack of high life and some ting. But fine wines? After their renovation years back, much of the store is taken up by their massive wine selection. The problem? It's such a horrendous wine selection, I can't even go in there anymore without my eyes bleeding!!! Well, I guess this is when my pretentious wine-snob side is in full effect. The fact is, I love wine, work in the industry and like to think I know a thing or two about the grape and it's delectable juice. Every time i've gone into Flanagan's looking for a decent bottle, i've walked out with a six pack of beer. The fact is, there is a delicate art to crafting a good wine selection. Variety is key. You want a vast amount of great and unique wines from all over the globe in every price range, but mostly in the $9 to $30 range. From each country, you should have a couple of big dogs in $50 and up category for those big spenders. Also, you want a knowledgeable staff who can point you to the exact wine you would like. The arrangement of wine is also very important. If you go by country, at least have them arrange by grape varietal, or very least, price. At Flanagan's, it's a very sporadic collection, heavily dominated by new world Californian wines. It's very possible that you may see a disgracefully old vintage of Kendall Jackson Cabernet for $12 next to a bottle of Flora Springs Cab for $75. What? Try to find a good wine from Argentina, I dare you! The Italian selection is made up of ultra expensive chianti's...which no one really even drinks anymore. I find more people want stuff like Barbera, Aglianico or Nero d'Avola. Wicker bottles of Chianti are pretty much automatically filled with shit wine and should be used for display only. Every time I go in all of the bottles are dusty...that, combined with the old vintages tells me that they don't have that much of a turnover, which is never good. The blaring heat in the winter is also a terrible sign....I can't even imagine how cooked and corked a lot those bottles are. Also, the staff almost never really knows what they're talking about. Nonetheless, they have a great beer selection with a ton of micro brews. You can even mix your own six pack out of a plethora of singles, which is cool. The walk-in beer cooler is fun. Overall, a decent store in a pinch. The beer selection is good. Their wine buyer, on the other hand, needs to be fired!!! What they're doing with that valuable wine real estate is sad!! read more

The wine I bought was old and turned. They traded it out for a more expensive bottle that I had to pay extra for. That was also turned. Management thought it tasted just fine. If you want wine that tastes like it came off of a hot truck you will love it. Better to buy wine elsewhere. read more

I visited Appleton over summer and helped my parents throw an anniversary party. Our caterer recommended contacting Flanagans to handle the bar. I will say that they worked on a tight deadline, brought out a wide selection of beverages, helped set up and the bartenders were good with the guests. Those were the good things. I only wish that our dealings with the owner Pat could have been better. Here's what happened. At the outset, most of our dealings were with a middle manager. She was pleasant in quoting us some various prices on beverage costs and labor. However, our requests for a formal quote were ignored, and at the end of the day, we ended up being charged $1,000 more than the estimate I calculated for myself based on the prices I was given, about a third more! Several wines I requested were swapped out for others without notice and the substitutes were not as good. In one case, we were charged double the price I was quoted for one variety of wine (e.g. they failed to charge the sale price that they promised at the outset). Additionally, the labor expense ended up way higher than quoted, and the incidentals, like ice, cups, bus tub rental, etc., which were never quoted on the front end, came out much higher than one would reasonably expect. FYI, they also add 18% on top of everything for gratuity. It wasn't clear if this went to the servers or to the business, however such a high mandatory "gratuity," especially when the bill comes out higher than expected, makes it really hard to use the tip as an expression of satisfaction with service to guests. In an effort to come to some middle ground between our quoted prices and what we were ultimately charged, we pointed out the surprises on the bill and discrepancies between some of the initial quotes and final charges. In a call my father had with Pat, Pat got angry, threatening and hung up on him. Ultimately, after several more exchanges we paid the full bill just to put things to rest. Pat's a gruff guy and seems to lack some of the basic courtesy and professionalism needed to keep customers returning to a small town business. It's too bad that such a fine party had to be tainted by a dispute that dragged on afterward and made us certain that we wouldn't bring any more business to Flanagans until they fix their policies regarding up-front estimates and their to approach customer service. read more

In the past 20 or so years Flanagan's has been my go to place for beer and bargains. Today I can say is the last time I will ever enter the establishment. My wife and I purchased a few cases of beer before the holidays largely because of rebates offered by those brands. Today my wife decided to fill out those rebates and realized that the wrong rebate slip was given so she went to this store and interrupted the owner(?) taking a smoke break. He insisted she didn't get that rebate slip from them even though she had the receipt, upc's, and the fact that we only bought beer there. He argued with her and then said I'll get you the right rebate, but that rebate didn't come from us. As if he had to pull the $10 out of his own pocket. One less customer ought to be of value to this establishment. Too many places in Appleton to buy beer and liquor to have this kind of poor service. ' read more

Like Benjamin H, I can only give Flanagan's 2 stars. However, I'm in disagreement with him about Flanagan's beer selection. Like BH, I like to think I know a little bit about the Hops and Grains and what I see going on at Flanagan's frustrates the hell out of me. I can't tell you how many times I've walked out of that store, not only empty handed, but angry too. This place has potential but they've had this potential for well over a decade and all they've done is squander it. But even worse, I've watched them take advantage of customers on rare beers, when they *should* be taking care of loyal customers with those products. It must have been about 2009, when Goose Island Bourbon County Brand Stout was really gaining steam. Back then, it was relatively available. You could buy 4 packs around the Valley for $17-18 and bombers for $10. But what did Flanagan's do? The very first day they put their bombers of GI BCBS on the shelf, the bottles had two price tags on them...a "regular" price and a "sale" price. The kicker is that the regular price was tagged at $19.99 and the sale price was $13.99!!! Not only was that highway robbery, but they were trying to convince customers that they were getting a deal. SHAMEFUL. Their "sale" price was 30% higher than the going rate, all over town. Seriously? WTH is that? I obviously wasn't the only person to notice. When everyone else in the Valley had long since sold out of this beer, Flanagan's still had it lingering on the shelf. Things have not improved one bit since then. And more importantly, they have done NOTHING to stay on top of the craft beer movement so finding the very limited stuff is nearly impossible anyway. Add to that, the fact that so many of their imports are covered in dust and stored, unprotected from the fluorescent lights. You couldn't pay me to purchase one of those skunky old imports, let alone pay the extra mark up they charge on everything. I can find pretty much everything I want to drink, just by running to Woodman's but there are more and more options out there every day and I don't have to pay their extra $1 or $2 for every 4 pack or 6 pack. read more

They carded me (which is fine because I'm 27) but then they refused to sell me alcohol because my 28 year old friend didn't have a ID with him. What a waste of time. The sign outside and the internet both said they open at 9am (Thursday morning). I waited in the parking lot until 9:15am and they still were not open, I called and no one answered, not even a message stating the hours. I left and called at 9:30 to see if someone had gotten there and still no answer. When I called at 12:30pm that day to see if they had what I was looking for, the female that answered was very rude and even though they had what I was looking for, I wasn't going back after how I had been addressed on the phone. There are plenty of other liquor stores I can go to and most will be happy to help you get something even if they don't carry it. I will not be going back to Flanagans parking lot ever again! And if your sign says you open at 9am, you should really open at 9am. I can't stand poor customer service and stores who have no regard for other people's time. read more
