Worst moving experience of my entire life - they asked for bribes, broke our stuff, and charged an exorbitant amounts avoid at all costs.

horrible experience. I was given an estimate then on the day of the move charged an extra 1,000 under threat of my move being canceled. the movers damaged over 1200 dollars of my property and then offered my only 400 in compensation. please run away and find movers with better business practices. customer service was zero help so don't even bother read more

This is the 4th time we have used them and each and every time has been a great experience. From the first person you talk to to plan it to the movers that show up to take all your stuff where it needs to go safely. ....and they stick to their name. No hidden fees. There definitely will be a 5th time. Thank you. read more

We spent hours getting a quote from them, being careful to ask about all details. "Are you SURE you are willing to take our couch as a loveseat? Its dimensions are so-and-so"; "We *think* we have so many boxes, but would like a quote for how much extra additional boxes will be"; etc. Then, 48 hours before the move, a different rep quoted us at 50% more. That's *thousands* of extra dollars. We tried to plead with him to honor what his colleague had promised us. He stonewalled us and told us that we were free to cancel -- for a 25% charge. We couldn't afford the higher rate, so we cancelled. Now we are out $700 for their mistake, and they show zero sympathy. I haven't felt this cheated in a long time. It's making me angry just typing this. read more

Don't waste your time in requesting a quote. They advertise 2 movers for $50 per hour and 3 movers for $70 per hour. This is false. I had 12 medium sized boxes and 3 pieces of furniture to move which would've taken less than three hours from start to finish. The commute from place to place was only 8 miles. They quoted me $2200 for the move!! When I assured them that it is not a big move, that 2 guys can knock out in less than 45 minutes each way, he said it didn't matter "if it was 3 boxes or 30 boxes that's the rate...take it or leave it." A real bully tough guy. Nasty attitude. I hung up on him. Save yourself the time and avoid requesting a quote from them. I ended up going with 2 movers on Craig's list that did a great job. And it only cost me $250 in under 3 hours including gas/toll/travel. read more

Terrible. I should known it would end poorly when the movers arrived and started saying there were extra stairs that weren't disclosed (which wasn't true) and that we could work out a deal on the side to compensate them versus calling the company. Fast forward they scratch the floors in our new apartment causing 10k of damage and now no one in their claims department will respond to me. DO NOT USE THEM read more

Do not use them. They cracked my marble top and damaged 3 pieces of furniture. The insurance they try to sell you is not insurance and has a $500.00 deductible, doesn't cover sales tax or delivery. It is a total scam. Avoid them at all costs. read more

fake ad, rude customer service, they advertise $65 for 2 men and a truck in nyc but yet they wanted to charge me $200 for an hour work When i ve forwarded their ad to them asking if that was a fake ad, the reply was : its for "three men in the truck for all city-based moves. Do you have a legitimate question?" then he continues with:"You can't seem to even read correctly, never mind comprehend simple concepts. "Don't wrestle with a pig. Avoid this company! We hired Flatrate to move from Tampa to Chicago and was the worst experience I've ever had. They destroyed over 75% of our new furniture, broke lots of boxes with glassware, lamps, mirrors, china, etc. They hired another company to finish delivering our items, when they arrived they called another person to come help them to finish the work, that person was under the influence. They left us with everything to unwrapped as they were late for their other delivery. We paid significant amount of $ for this move to ensure our belongings got there safely and they destroyed over $4k worth our stuff. They sent us a check with an apology note for $400. We appealed and never heard back from them. This is not a serious company, be careful!!! read more

Jonathan, Mamadou, and Elias totally made our day, they made our move within Manhattan seamless and easy. I can't recommend them enough! You can't go wrong with these three, and whoever is reading this, I hope you get lucky enough to get them to move your stuff! Flatrate's estimates, lived up to their name, we discussed a price on the phone, and we were able to move without any unpleasant surprises. Five out of five stars! read more

I've used Flatrate twice before for 1 bedroom moves in NYC. It was good back then and Nicholas Roman is a wonderful person to work with. My cross country move experience, handled by Amanda Ortiz, has been beyond terrible. Only after my belongings have been picked up and confiscated (no longer in my possession) am I given a window period that does not include the dates at I am available. They pretty much require me to be available when they can deliver my property. If you have a tight schedule then avoid FlatRate. Was told the following: it takes 7 days to transport cross country. Also that they can only guarantee a delivery date 24 hours before the delivery date. Despite that they have no good explanation why the earliest delivery date they can give me is 24 hours after the pick up date. If you are moving outside of NYV then avoid FlatRate. If you don't want to be treated poorly then avoid Flatrate. If you expect good customer service that does not blame you for their inconvenient availability then avoid FlatRate. read more

Have worked with this company 2 times now and while their moving services are solid, their business practices are less so. While they moved everything on time and packaged stuff quickly, they did break my kitchen island during one of my moves from NY to LA, to which their claims department continuously ignored my emails and never reimbursed me. Further, their sales team claims to have a discount they honor for repeat customers, but this is a lie. I worked with Adam Robb and he was very slow to communicate with and was not able to secure a reasonable price compared to my previous moves. I had to follow up multiple times to get a response from him which ultimately yielded a thoughtless and disappointing outcome. Overall, I would go with this company for their flexibility but for none of their moral / ethical practices. They tend to mistreat their customers and there is a lot of variance in the quality of employees you come across. read more

I recently used FlatRate twice, once moving our office within the same building and also to move my mother-in-law from one apartment to another 16 miles away. Both times the crew was exceptional, very experienced and personable. They worked quickly and padded and transported all items with care. There were large pieces in the office move and fragile items in the residential move, all arrived safely. In both cases there were changes to the inventory last minute, as things are always hard to predict with moving. Some items were removed but other items and needs were added. Flat Rate is truly flat rate and our contract amount never changed. Our Sales rep was always available and Flat Rate stays in contact throughout the move day so you can have confidence if you need to reach someone at the office. I won't bother calling anyone else in the future. read more

Apparently I cannot write two reviews. tl;dr: 4 stars NYC/NYS, zero stars cross country. Local NYC/NYS review: 4 stars, great service, assuming you have nothing of high value/precious. We moved from apt to apt to house and storage unit and such, used 3x, and had good experiences. Be prepared for lots and lots of plastic wrap, which is a bummer. Reviewers mention they put random things together - completely true. If this is important to you, this is not the right company. if you just want someone to come in, pack your stuff, and move it to the next place quickly, this is fine. They are pretty flexible, very kind, and took every COVID precaution we asked them to take. The tip comments are true, but we should be tipping movers well so.... Cross country review: 1 star, do not recommend. Find a company that does cross country/cross state moves and is insured accordingly. We've spent more than $15K just to work around a multi-week delay. Most people don't have this cushion. Communication is not good - if they had been honest with us about the timing and delays, we could have adjusted. In reality, they just suggested we may need to report the items as missing because they do not know where they are. I have cried multiple times from the stress, generally on the day stuff was supposed to arrive...and we couldn't get ahold of anyone....until a day or so later when it's "another week delay..." read more

The worst experience moving and I have moved several times in the city and over states. Rude, lying, not responsive and unprofessional. Found a different mover in 15 minutes with half the price and were amazing. We booked a move two weeks prior for 9 am on a Friday. The day before they asked me if I can move at 1. I said I can't, need 9 am per contract. They confirmed 9 ok. The day of, I emailed at 9.30 as nobody showed up and they emailed back that the movers are on their way. At 10.30 I called again, now my move is at 1 and kept arguing. Showed them the email and the text and contract and said they will come at 12, now it was system glitch. They showed up at 1 anyway and we cancelled the move. read more

A truly disorganized, non communicative and unprofessional company. Read on for some entertainment So we booked this company as they sounded professional and with competitive price. We booked them early Monday morning. Come Thursday afternoon, I receive a casual phone call stating that they're sorry but they will cancel our move for the following Wednesday as their management decided to acknowledge a very important Jewish holiday. I expressed to them that I highly respect their religious holidays; however, this is completely unacceptable as the repercussions that will now follow with time scheduling of two NYC apartment buildings, my time off and overall inconvenience would be substantial. They offered to deduct only 100$ at first. I was shocked. I then called up another company and scheduled with them (which let me say so far have been amazing) and called back to decline their offer to reschedule for a measly 100$ discount. He upped it to 200$ off. Quite frankly, they should have realized that this was THEIR mistake and give us 50% off and we probably would have stayed with them. What makes it WORSE! The miscommunication at their offices booked us anyway for a day earlier than what was initially placed and had the nerve to charge me full price! Luckily when I called to cancel I demanded an email stating that. So I had proof. The manager then tells me they're so sorry for such a mishap and will refund me immediately. EVEN MORE WORSE, the idiots showed up at my building today and insisted to my doorman they can go up and thank goodness my doorman said NO. When I called them to ask why they went to my building, they simply said "that's a million dollar question. We apologize. " Highly advise people not to use this company. They extremely disorganized, no communication amongst their team, and they expect homeowners to trust them with their personal belongings? Don't think so. read more
These guys are truly incredible. Initially, you're given a walk through of the services over the phone, a check list, and a general overview. I worked with Bernard, who couldn't have been nicer. Then came the move. Sayeed and his team were efficient, friendly, and got everything we needed out of the old place and into the new without any damages. Extremely fair on pricing and very professional. 10/10. Moving is never a fun process, but these guys make it way easier. Thank you!!! read more

DO NOT EVEN THINK of hiring this moving company. While they appear quite professional up front during the sales process, they have NO care for your property, have awful communications, and will not treat you reasonably if you need to file a claim. In my case, we moved cross-country, and pretty much every piece of furniture was damaged. All of the pieces were dragged on the ground, ruining all of the corners, and some pieces even had chunks broken off. Upholstery was frayed from being dragged. Our sofa had some strange oil stains on it that do not come off. Even though the furniture had been wrapped in blankets, all of the blankets were frayed and torn showing how stuff was dragged and damaged! I have moved several times, and I have NEVER experienced anything quite like this before. To top it off, we purchased additional valuation insurance from them to cover our furniture and belongings beyond the basic coverage provided. Despite that, we have not had any fair resolution. After some time had passed from the initial claim filing, they advised us that we needed to hire a professional furniture repair company to provide their written report / assessment as to the repairs required and whether the repairs could even be done. We diligently followed their instructions, and spent an additional $250 to obtain the report they requested. After submitting that, we waited a month with no communication at all, only to receive from Flat Rate Moving a settlement offer of some "appearance credits" of a couple hundred dollars, when our actual loss is significantly larger. We appealed the settlement offer, and have been waiting now another month. Again, no communication whatsoever. Unacceptable! Here are sample photos of some of our damages. Our furniture is very good quality and not inexpensive, which is why we purchased the additional valuation coverage. Companies show their true colors when there is an issue, especially by how they handle it. These guys have shown that they are scam artists and do not care about their customers or their reputation. If you call, no-one answers the phone. If you leave a message, nobody returns your call. Stay away form this poor service provider. They are horrible. read more

The movers I had were friendly, fast, and went above and beyond. The 3 stars is because flatrate underquotes to win business, then stings you 24 hours before moving day and is disrespectful to their movers. I had flat rate come to my home to quote. I am not a moving, I don't do this for a living, so I need them to quote. We walk around, open every closet, check things off a list and they say it's 40 boxes. Moving day comes around. Packing is done. It's 80+ boxes. Crew are unhappy as apparently this happens a lot - more work than they expect based on the quote and job takes more time. Even though 24 hours before the move when I received the confirmation email I updated the box count (and was then charged more). I think flatrate is good for the us as customers but the model is unsustainable on their packers and movers unless they get better at giving accurate quotes and scoping the jobs. read more

I hired flatrate to move me from the village to chelsea. 8 blocks . The movers for the most part were fine. I have moved 6 times in NYC and more than 10 across the country They sawed a very expensive sofa in half they said to get it out the door but it had been delivered and made it into the apartment fine. They refused to pay and only. Offer 60 cents per pound for insurance which in NYC is a ridiculous amount. I am posting pictures too. They also broke a large frame. Paid these guys almost $7000 to move my expensive IT equipment. Paid extra for "Coverage" in case they broke any of my expensive equipment. They did over $8500 worth of damage and after WEEKS of waiting for them to respond to me about a settlement, they finally sent a letter rejecting all my IT equipment and offering me $950 to settle. I am currently seeking other means of recovering my money and will NEVER use this company again. I feel cheated, ripped off, lied to, and given the run around. I would have come out ahead financially to throw my belongings in the Hudson river and re purchased everything when I arrived here. I have never been as dissatisfied with service in all my life. Worst movers on the planet. Do not be fooled by the lies and slick marketing tricks. They will destroy your belongings and offer you a pittance for them. DO NOT HIRE THESE PEOPLE!!! read more
The movers themselves were very friendly. However, I will NEVER use flatrate again. I scheduled the move one month in advance and was quoted ~$1500, far more than any other company but because of my strange moving hours (6-9 pm) I chose to proceed. My move also included a carpenter taking apart and reassembling the couch. At 1 pm, on the day of the move (!!!!), I received a call asking if the carpenter could come earlier to see the couch. It was also implied that the carpenter might not be able to have the couch delivered that same day, however I was not given a reason. The carpenter arrived, disassembled the couch, and promised me he would try his best to have it delivered the same day after I explained that my new building has a strict elevator reservation rule for all move ins. Instead...he took MY COUCH back to the flatrate headquarters rather than to my new building. How does this make ANY sense?? It doesn't... That evening, when the couch still had not arrived, I called flatrate and spoke with Nestor - who was also unable to give me a reason as to why the couch was still lying in pieces at the flatrate headquarters - except that the carpenter had already gone home. I understand that my move to the new building (6-9 pm) was very late. However, when booking this move ONE MONTH IN ADVANCE, I was told that this move-in time would not be an issue. To then find out the DAY OF that in fact there was an issue, in that the carpenter wanted to go home, was EXTREMELY disappointing. For the EXORBITANT price that flatrate charges, this mixup was unacceptable and caused problems for me at my new building. Don't make the same mistake I did - use a different moving company. ***UPDATE: apparently customer service saw this review and kindly called me and offered me a partial refund - very professional of them. I appreciated this gesture. Thank you, FlatRate read more

Please beware FlatRate Moving. This company will destroy your high ticket items and go dark when you file a claim appeal. My friend recommended FlatRate Moving to me as a reputable company. She had used them in July 2018 and had a great experience. I placed my trust in FlatRate and unfortunately, my experience was horrible. Here are the full details (sorry for the length). I am a real customer. I have never been compelled to write a negative Yelp review before but I don't want anyone else to go through this. I had a small 1BR move. I paid an additional $300 for full value "insurance" (not the regular per pound insurance) from FlatRate to cover a very expensive credenza ($4,150) and dining table ($5,100). When I bought the insurance from the rep, he told me that if anything happened, they would first attempt to repair the items and then if the repairs were not to my liking, they would refund me the replacement value minus a $500 deductible. The movers were nice guys, super courteous, showed up on time, but were clearly exhausted and were joking about being out all night the night before. I let them know about the two high ticket items and asked to please be extra careful. I told them they should remove the credenza doors and legs to reduce the weight, but they declined and told me they move pianos all the time and that this was a piece of cake. Given their slow pace, the move took over 14 hours to complete (not the 6-8 hours as estimated). The very last item they brought into my new place was the credenza. And of course, they dropped it in the stairwell, causing a huge gash on the front corner (among other dings and nicks). They also damaged the leg of my dining table. I figured, no big deal since I had the insurance after all. I filed a claim and they sent someone to inspect the credenza. About a month later, I received a settlement check in the mail for $340 ($840 settlement less a $500 deductible). The insurance cost me $300 to begin with. So I basically received a net of $40 for $9,000 of damaged furniture. I filed an appeal as this would come nowhere near the $1,500 repair estimate I received from the manufacturer of the credenza. FlatRate told me it was under review. That was 2 months ago. I have since emailed them 7 times and left multiple voice mails and they have gone completely radio silent. I don't blame the moving crew for this (accidents happen) but please don't fall for this shady scam by FlatRate Movers and choose another moving company if you value your belongings. read more

This was my 3rd move with Flat Rate. The last two were flawless and while this one looked flawless initially (and I tipped 25%!!!), when I started unpacking boxes, I realized that a bunch of plates/glass had been broken. The boxes that had broken pieces had asphalt imbedded into the sides of the box, which means not only were my boxes dropped, they were dragged on the ground (and we are talking about small boxes because I always pack heavy items in small boxes). Beyond that: it has been 2 weeks since the move and I'm owed a refund of over because I didn't need their "couch doctor" services and it still hasn't been processed. I don't know what happened to these guys, but I will NEVER use them again. read more
Moving is such a hassle, but honestly, the easiest part turned out to be Moving Day. I packed up my tiny apartment for three weeks (I have a lot of stuff), I called about twelve movers for quotes, spent hours of my life on the phone detailing every piece of furniture I owned, and got a wide range of prices and fees and availability. FlatRate fell on the high end of the quote spectrum, but they were so easy to talk to on the phone. And they emphasized the fact that there are no hidden fees...it is literally a flat rate. You won't be charged if the movers get a ticket the day of moving. They will loan you wardrobe boxes the day of your move. They have insurance, if that is something your building requires (as mine did). I received a copy of the quote by e-mail, so I could double-check it, which I appreciated. And I was able to electronically sign it to set-up the move. I received two confirmation calls about my move. The day of the move, my movers were not just on time...they were early. And because I was such a great packer, I was fully ready for them. FlatRate was efficient, fast, and very professional. I was so nervous that something would go wrong, that the movers wouldn't show up, or they'd be late, or they'd break something, or any number of other things that could go wrong...and the move was just so easy. They were in and out in 3 hours (I moved from the UES to Brooklyn Heights), and nothing was broken! I was thrilled with the move...unpacking is another story. I would absolutely use FlatRate again! read more

Worst experience ever! Would NOT recommend this company for a long distance move!! I just moved from Santa Monica to Manhattan. I had about 8 large pieces that were supposed to be wrapped and moved. Of those half were damaged including my nice 55' flat screen tv went missing. No body has reached out to me, returned my calls and when I call I continue to get the run around. Such a disappointing experience as if moving isn't stressful enough. It's been a week now and still no one has made any effort to resolve this. DON'T USE FLATRATE FOR AN LA TO NY MOVE!!! read more

Would ABSOLUTELY recommend this moving company. They took an awful and stressful process and made it easy. Everything was incredibly smooth with my move, from my initial call to booking the move, through the end of the movers dropping everything off at the final destination. Everyone was incredibly helpful and communicative along the way as well. The movers were on time, speedy (unlike other companies that take their time and try to run the clock), as well and kind and professional. Plus, competitive prices and they it was truly the price that they initially quoted me, no games or gimmicks like I've experienced elsewhere. I will definitely be using FlatRate Moving and recommending to all of my friends and family. read more

The movers came more than 30 minutes later than the appointed time. While moving things out of my apartment, I heard a big crash sound from the bedroom while I was in the living room. Soon after, a mover reported that a nightstand top was loose and a handle to one of the drawers was broken. He reported this after moving the nightstand across the room; it was in an inner corner originally and, when he reported the damage, it was near the entrance door. Upon inspection, I found damages on the floor and bedside damages (small cracks) near where the nightstand was moved to. I think he accidentally dropped the nightstand, and it scratched the bedside and made cracks on the floor, creating a crash sound. He would have reported the obvious nightstand damage before moving it if the damage had been there before he moved it. Things happen. What frustrated me was a refusal to acknowledge his action. He tried to convince me that the handle had been broken before he moved the nightstand, and the big crash sound was things bumping into a wall while moving. I told him that I am not stupid and wouldn't be swayed by his unlikely explanation because I knew for a fact that the nightstand was fine in the morning and the big crash sound couldn't be caused by some small bumps. In the very morning prior to the moving, I was using the nightstand drawers to put some clothes in, there was no damage. The cracks I found on the floor were quite visible, I would have noticed them before, if they had been done prior to the move. There were no other such noticeable cracks on the floor. I told him that I thought he broke the handle and we disagreed on who caused the damage and that there was no point in arguing about that. I told him to continue the move. I didn't curse or use any foul language. The statement I made that I think he broke the handle upset another mover, a tall guy. He thought I was disrespectful for expressing my thoughts on who broke the handle and threatened to quit the move. Then, they all moved out of the apartment and didn't come back for more than 10 minutes. That put me in jeopardy because I had to move out that day. I felt I was owed an apology, not a threat by these guys. I decided to pay penalty fee to the apartment and use another mover. I went out and told the tall guy to move all the furniture back into my apartment since they didn't want to do the moving. He seemed to back down. After a while, they decided to continue the move. While assembling a smaller bed, they assembled it wrong and had to disassemble/assemble again. I have a suspicion that they damaged the boards because I saw them using electric/manual screw drivers much longer during the assembly than the disassembly. Overall, the experience was bad. I had to go through a lot of stress dealing with your movers. Here are 5 negative things about your movers in my experience. 1) Trust: Refusing to acknowledge their mistakes 2) Attitude: Instead of owning the mistake, getting upset for hearing fact-supported claims about their mistake. Getting upset when hearing a gentle prompt to hurry up, due to elevator reservation time running out; the delay was caused by movers themselves. 3) Hostility: Trying to put a customer in a difficult spot by threatening to quit in the middle of a move 4) Workmanship: Assembling furniture without clearly thinking and damaging the furniture in the process 5) Time: Coming to work late and delaying the work by taking unwarranted time out during the move read more
I used FlatRate twice to move and they were great both times. First the relocation specialist will meet with you at your place to determine how much stuff you have to move and how many boxes, etc you might need. Before the moving date, if you end up having less stuff, make sure you call them to remove the items you do not need or else you will be charged for it. They are very cool about making sure that your moving list is up to date and correct. The actual movers can vary. Usually the guy in charge is great and knows what he is doing but sometimes the other guys just stand around and you have to direct them on where to place your furniture or how to put your bed or table together. FlatRate makes moving a lot less painful and I highly recommend them for any move you might have. I worked with Yuval who was very professional and quick with responses. read more

I've moved with Flat Rate four times now. Laurence has been my estimator each time, but I've had different crews on each occasion. I cannot stress enough how professional my experience has been, especially compared to some of the jokers I've used in the past. You might see weirdos in one-star reviews below complaining about giving out their address so Flat Rate could provide an estimate -- you WANT them to do that, for goodness sake. Guy comes to your apartment, walks around for 15 minutes, and boom -- you have a binding estimate amount. I have never once paid a cent over the price quoted, and there's never been any sort of last minute "hey, we forgot there's a $20 blahblah charge you need to pay" that you get from movers/deliverymen frequently (looking at you, Sleepy's). I have also never had an unprofessional crew in four iterations. All my possessions have been treated with care and respect, and I cannot recall a single damaged or broken item in four moves. That's pretty incredible. Moreover, this past time I used them to pack up the apartment as well, in addition to the load/unload. They wrapped and packed up a two bedroom apartment in about 2.5 hours with immaculate attention to detail. Not a chip on a glass, dish, or appliance. They aren't the cheapest option, but you get what you pay for -- and they are worth every penny, let me tell you. Fast, professional, friendly. read more

I would advise everyone against using them. We had multiple issues - first of which was that the packers set a fire in our kitchen, filling our apartment with smoke and setting off the building smoke alarms. Our items were placed in storage and then eventually shipped cross-country. When the long-distance movers arrived, several of our items were missing and turns out they were left in storage. It took more than 2 weeks for the additional items to come. Their customer service is horrible and I would never recommend this company. read more

This was my first time moving long distance. Reading reviews online I was very skeptical about Movers and Packers. My experience with flat rate (delivery pending at the time of review ) was great. Adam was very professional and accommodating on the phone. There were two guys with a truck. Pablo and Pedro. Very warm and experienced. They took care of everything , inventory last minute detailing and extra wrapping of boxes for long distance move. Simply loved it. You are in very good hands with Pablo and flatrate.. cheers !!!! read more

Did a move today between NJ and NY and it was an excellent experience. I moved into a 1 bedroom. Nick, Milton, and Nickolai were exceptional. They were punctual. Took an inventory of all of the items I was moving, explained how the day would go, and got to work. They moved every box and piece of furniture with care. The even tightened the legs on a table that was wobbly. They wrapped my furniture well to ensure that it would not get damaged, and packed all my things very carefully. They got through the wrapping and packing of the truck quickly and made their way to my move destination quickly. When they arrived they carefully and quickly unpacked the truck and placed all the items inside where I wanted them. The whole job was done efficiently and with care. Would definetely recommend them and will use them again next time I move! read more

The 3 men that showed up for my move were the best! They worked fast, took care of my belongings and even took away some empty boxes that I unpacked while they were in the process of moving me in. HIGHLY recommend FlatRate. Don't waste your time checking other movers in Manhattan. Their prices are reasonable and they don't nickel and dime for time or size of your move. They were the best price i received and hands down the best service. Do yourself a favor and call them. read more

Their workers are rude, inconsiderate, and I will never recommend their service. There are way too many movers in NYC to deal with their attitudes. This was their "Elite" service. read more

Flat Rate movers are the best ! Today Ernesto and Justin came to move me out of my apartment and it couldn't have gone better. They were friendly and professional and got the job done in record time. I can't thank them enough for how helpful they were. Nick was also excellent in setting things up. It's very easy and the technology used to sign paperwork, pay, etc. makes the whole process much easier. Highly recommend ! read more

Rating between 2 - 3 stars was debatable. Flat Rate was referred to me by one of my graduate school classmates that had success moving from NYC to MIA. Unfortunately, my experience was not as smooth. I believe generally they are 4/5-star, but my experience was the outlier which I feel no other person, especially someone not covered by corporate expense should endure. On a positive note, the email or phone responsive of the Flat Rate office team is great as is the speed in which items are packed/unpacked, loaded/unloaded by the on-site movers. Also, the paperwork is well laid out. However, the negative is a lack of organization to pack/unpack boxed contents; as well as my move was scheduled against my preferred timing, leading to both inconvenience and inefficiency of delivery plus some of my furniture arrived with damages and all furniture had dust. Also at the end of the first 3-month storage period, I was notified my monthly storage fee would double. I had to refute such gouging and eventually I agreed to a more a nominal increase, but an increase all the same which I found unscrupulous as nothing in original contract said rates could change. It was agreed to in writing and verbally that I would be alerted 48 hours before delivery. Instead not only was it only 24 hour notice, Flat Rate Long Distance decided to proceed with the move on a date when I had tight availability and that my building management could only assign 2 hours use of elevator even though we both requested the day after which was free availability. The movers were there a total of 3 hours and 45 minutes. Given the poor scheduling, I had to take a conference call so I was preoccupied for the first 2 1/2 hours of the move. For what remained, it was difficult to direct the movers due to the missed time and so many items being in my apartment that were brought up to adhere to the 2 hour elevator limit. Also, due to the poor packing of my boxes, and being that I have so many items, it was difficult to properly place items for two reasons, first, the boxes were not detailed in labeling. For instance, books in boxes were labeled to the correct room, but there was no labeling of which shelf, and left to right, based on how it was setup before packing it up. Therefore, without me overseeing, the books were unpacked and haphazardly placed on shelf, mostly back to front. This created aimless work for the movers and extra work for me in completely reorganizing. Second, all furniture had dirt which led me to question were my items not stored wrapped; the dust was caked on. I received no heads up beforehand that this may be the condition they arrive in to prep so unpacking was futile as all furniture had to be thoroughly wiped and sanitized. Given the dust, why would Flat Rate not recommend that I cancel unpacking given their expertise of what condition lengthy stored items might arrive in? Also, many boxes had a mix of items just thrown in without regard for the protection or delicacy of the items, i.e. shoes with lingerie, kitchen items with linens, light fixtures with hair products. I have a lot of things and this move wasn't easy on both ends, however, my contract wasn't just for transporting items, but also fees for packing and unpacking. Including $500 cash tip for the movers on both ends, I absolutely feel jilted. To add insult to injury, a handful of furniture items were delivered scratched with gashes in the wood that were not there prior and two pieces off hinge. Additionally, right after my pickup, I reached out to my booker that the movers left two picture hangings on wall that I specifically asked to be packed; to this date I've received no response, apology or compensation. My Dirt Devil vacuum and Black & Decker drill are missing; as well as the moving blanket I borrowed from a friend seems to have been accidentally taken during unpack. The only thing that got me through the delivery was how great the foreman was. I really wish the packing had been done better so that they could have unpacked better and helped me more because they had such great attitudes. Unfortunately, I had to release them as it was futile due to hapless packing and dirt on the furniture. Plus what they were unpacking actually was creating work. Moving is a strain enough as it is, even more so as a single woman, and without a company covering long distance and the long storage expenses. I am hoping that Flat Rate does the right thing with reparations for the claim and photo documentation I submit. Should you select Flat Rate, please be proactive to ensure you do endure the damages and occurrences I had. Photos are posted to show above. read more

Update 2: The company made everything right yesterday and finished the move, so I am updating to 2 stars. I will update once I receive payment, should be about 2 weeks. Thank you for correcting this situation! Update: If you have a bad experience with this company, leave a bad Yelp review--it is the only way they will contact you. I received a call from customer service directly after posting, and they were very nice and helpful. They are giving me a partial refund and sending over another truck to finish the move this evening. I agreed to update my Yelp review, and I have removed names. Original review: FlatRate Moving is a SCAM--they did not complete my move, lied, and will not return my calls! This whole move has been a disaster, and the movers lied to my face. The company will not return my calls, nor will the lead mover. I spent $1360 to move one bedroom from Queens to the Bronx, and an additional $300 in tips, and for that amount of payment they won't even dignify me with a call for incomplete service. I'm sure if the move goes well, it's great--but if it doesn't, THEY WILL NOT RETURN YOUR CALLS. First I called on Friday during business hours to update my inventory, as I decided to leave some of the furniture behind, and I had mistakenly told them that it was 4 flights when it was really 2; so I wanted to update this information, but I could not get a hold of anyone. Saturday morning, May 26th, for some reason my card was not going through, so they asked me to go to the bank and get a cashier's check. My lead mover's manager told him he was not permitted to move until I returned. I apologized for the inconvenience and pointed out the things that needed to be moved, which was very clear and all was listed on the inventory. At this point I was happy with the service and not concerned. Then the lead mover called me while I was at the bank and said that he trusted me and would meet me at the new apartment. Had he waited as he was legally instructed by his manager none of this would have happened. My roommate called me when they were getting ready to leave and said that they hadn't packed everything. The lead mover told me that it was just the futon which they were unable to move, and I figured that I didn't care about it. No big deal. So I met them at the new apartment, they were very careful with my things and efficient, so I tipped them each $100. I noticed that some boxes were missing, but they said they had everything and were not able to return. It turns out they WERE able to return, because he said, "We made a big mistake and forgot your bed frame, so we need to go back for it." Great. I'm still happy at this point. I reminded them of a large box (that was with the other boxes) in the living room, a mirror, and 5 boxes in the closet. They said they would make sure they got them. They came back with the one large box and told me that they had already packed the boxes from the closet. I gave them the benefit of the doubt. I returned to my apartment the next day to finish cleaning and found an entire van's worth of boxes that they had not moved, plus a very small nightstand that they had moved out of the bedroom but not to the truck, and a small bookshelf that I had clearly asked them to move and was clearly in the inventory. I called the lead mover and the company and left multiple messages (again during business hours), but nobody returned my calls. Finally I started texting the lead mover and threatening to make formal complaints, at which point he was motivated to call me back and told me he would return the following evening (yesterday, Monday) at 6:00 with his own van to complete the move. Great. I can understand a mistake and was grateful he was willing to correct it. He said he'd call on the way over. So I show up early and wait until 7:30, called and texted multiple times, but he was a no show--he didn't even call to cancel. At this point I have an entire van's worth of furniture and boxes that were not moved, the company will not return my calls, I don't have a car, and I am out $1660 for moving from a one-bedroom to a one-bedroom, both within NYC. Fortunately I have a friend with a van, and I am going to pay him $100 plus dinner to help me finish moving tomorrow evening after work. In summary the company did not complete the job, lied, was then a no-show, and will not return my calls. I can understand if they were to call me back and apologize and give me a partial reimbursement (or better, finish the job), but for the amount I paid and no phone call? Totally unprofessional. BIG SCAM, save your money and go elsewhere. At this point I do not expect anything from them because they are liars who do not follow through on their word. Stay away! I lost a lot of money! This was not an innocent mistake, because my roommates SHOWED them the remaining boxes and they refused to pack them. read more

This is my 57th review and I pride myself on being fair and even handed. While I have not always been delighted with the services I have received, I have never called a company deplorable nor would I do so lightly. I was having my apt painted and floors redone and needed to have my furniture removed for the duration, hence my call to Flat Rate. I carefully planned the timing of the painters, flooring install and the movers; (even allotting a few days of "wiggle room" just in case) as I was having people over for both Passover and Easter. The first group of movers picked up my items to bring them to Flat Rates' warehouse in NJ. A little over a week later, they were to be returned. The second group of movers arrived and were almost finished when I was advised that there was "a problem." The mover asked me to accompany him to my lobby where I found my very expensive side buffet, upside down with the back leg and adjoining area smashed to pieces. He admitted that this was his fault, and that this actually occurred days prior as they were loading my furniture from their warehouse into the truck. I asked why someone from Flat Rate didn't call me prior to delivery? The mover indicated he was instructed to deliver it broken, and to advise me to file a clam. This was the first red flag- Flat Rate was aware that their men damaged my furniture and yet, fir some inexplicable reason felt no obligation to advise me of same. I called their customer service dept immediately and incorrectly assumed they would be as concerned as I was. Their response "oh, sorry - can you please just take some pics, fill out the form and send it back to us." I filled out the form, included photos, a receipt which clearly shows the cost of the piece. They also ask for the weight of the piece which I think is absurd. Not sure about all of you, but I just can't for the life of me remember when was the last time I weighed a piece of my furniture. Clearly another red flag. Saying I was devastated about the damage that Flat Rate caused would be an understatement. Just to clarify, if this were a piece of furniture I purchased from Crate & Barrel, sure I would be upset, but we are talking about a piece of furniture that was bought as an investment and was over $6,900. Since I was aware of the value, I opted for their insurance which valued my property at $10,000. I then receive an ambiguous email from their Customer Service Dept - I say ambiguous as it was signed "customer service" which indicated that I needed to contact their vendor, All Furniture Services, so they can assess the damage. All Furniture arrives three days later, the guy tells me how great he is, and that he can "fix it" Fix it? Even if All Furniture were miracle workers and could "fix it" the piece would no longer have the same value. To add insult to injury, I needed to call 20 people and tell them to find alternative arrangements for the holidays - so another big thank you to Flat Rate from my friends & family whose holiday plans were cancelled the day before. I then receive an email to advise that my claim is "now closed" and they would like to offer me $250.00 as a "courtesy compensation" So Flat Rate just damaged a $6,900 piece of furniture, and their idea of settling my claim is to offer me $250.00? They also advise that I can have it repaired by All Furniture Services for $450.00. As per Flat Rate, I have a $500.00 deductible so while they state that they will repair or replace any damaged furniture, in actuality you are the one who pays for the repair. I am far from obtuse so what am I missing here? I am now sitting with the broken piece of furniture in my kitchen (where their men promptly "dumped" it) although it belongs in my living room. My apt looks as if I just moved in instead of having just been redone. And while the damage was due to Flat Rate's negligence, they have now washed their hands of the matter and feel that an offer of a $250.00 check will cover my inconvenience ( It cost more than $250. to have the piece professional cleaned). Inconvenience doesn't even begin to describe what I have been through and again, all due to Flat Rates' negligence. They have decided to wash their hands of the matter, I on the other hand have not. My next call was again to their customer service, to ask for a name/ email address for someone on their management team. Nope sorry - we cannot provide that information. As someone who works in management for one of the largest privately owned companies in the U.S., we have no issue providing contact info for anyone on our Executive Management Team. EDIT (March 6): I spoke to Vicky, head of customer service at Flatrate Movers, this week. She saw my yelp review and called me to get more details. I was impressed by the proactive response and her interest in my experience. She assured me that what I described below is not the normal experience, and they have spoken with the movers to remediate the situation. I'm happy now to recommend Flatrate to others, b/c clearly customer satisfaction is their priority. (March 2) We wanted an up-front amount to budget for moving costs, so flatrate seemed ideal. Plus, we investigated 3 other companies and all the quotes seemed to be in the same ballpark. Flatrate got the edge for excellent sales service in assuring us *everything* was included such disassembly & reassembly, extra packing and padding for all the furniture and breakables, and taxes + tolls + expenses. Plus, I thought they might be motivated to work efficiently since there was no hourly rate. I was quoted $950 for *everything* and was told that 4 guys would show up, and it would take around 4-5 hours. We had a 1-br apt on the 2nd floor, and we moved to a 3rd floor walk-up apt. Basic inventory includes bed, 2 dressers, large 8ft ikea wardrobe, couch, 2 desks, 4 chairs, dining table, 2 elfa storage units, 4 bookshelves, 3 large clay planters and @ 30 boxes of stuff. Couple of things to note here: - we told the sales rep that we were moving to a 3rd floor walk-up - we initially forgot to include the 3 clay planters in our inventory list, and we emailed the sales rep 4 days prior to the move to be sure and include these So on the day of the move, we were ready with all the boxes packed and labeled. Our arrival window was 1-3pm and the moving truck arrived at 3pm with 3 movers, apologizing for the delay b/c of problems with the previous move. The foreman was clearly ready to get going since they work on commission and not an hourly rate, as he explained to us several times that day. However, one guy had to sit in the truck the whole time so we only had 2 guys to pack up our apt. The planters were the first thing the foreman complained about - "it's not my responsibility... if anything happens to them, it's not my responsibility b/c that's not on my inventory sheet. That is going to cost you extra." We discussed this for a few minutes, and decided that since we did email the sales rep about the planters, we would be ok for insurance purposes. They moved the planters but didn't add anything to the cost. The movers got everything into the truck in about 2 hours, except for the large ikea wardrobe. That was the next complaint from the foreman... "it's not my responsibility." According to the foreman, he felt like the wardrobe was too risky to move and it would likely break and it wasn't his responsibility, as he kept repeating. We did remind him that it was included in the quote - the disassembly and reassembly in fact - but he was adamant it wasn't his responsibility. Since he was so sure it would not survive the trip, we decided to leave the wardrobe to the next tenant. In hindsight, I guess he wanted to leave it b/c it would take too long to handle and he was in a hurry to finish for the day. So we left the wardrobe - the largest piece of furniture, and likely a chunk of the price quoted. When we arrived at the new apt building, the foreman balked at the walk-up. Apparently, he was not told that the stairs were double flights instead of a straight flight of stairs. We didn't know we had to explain the stairs to the sales rep when we got the quote, but we told him it was a 3rd floor walk-up and it was written on the foreman's papers as a 3rd floor walk-up. The foreman kept balking - "this will cost you extra, someone will have to pay us for this, it takes extra time." So he called flatrate headquarters and talked to them for a while, and then handed the phone to us. We explained that we said 3rd floor walk-up but we didn't know we had to give details about the flights. A few minutes after that call, another rep from flatrate called us again. After much discussion, we were told that sales would have to call us later in the week to discuss how this might impact our final price. We were very upset to hear this since we had left the largest piece of furniture back in the old apartment, with no complaint about getting a refund, and we had been accurate in describing everything in our move. Sales never asked for details like how many stairs are in each flight, etc. That said, the movers worked very hard to get everything upstairs in 2 hours. They finished the day around 8.30pm, so it was about 4 hrs of work and 1.5 hr of transit time. We tipped them 17% on the original cost even though the large wardrobe was left behind. The foreman then took a box of cookies on the counter without even asking me if he could have any - cheeky! read more

We used FlatRate Moving to move our things from a home in Colorado and our home in NYC to our new place in Philadelphia. To put it simply, everything about this move was completely unprofessional and mismanaged. We could not be more disappointed in the lack of service and the aggravation caused at every turn and it ended with our furniture (worth $7k) being delivered broken and a refund of $450 for move that cost just shy of $10k. We submitted a claim and an appeal to the verdict with all information documented with pictures and explanations in powerpoint. Bottom line, a move is stressful enough so you need to work with experienced professionals you can trust. I highly recommend avoiding FlatRate. Here is an outline of our experience: 1) COLORADO PICK UP: After flying from NYC to Colorado explicitly for the confirmed October 27 pickup, the van didn't show in the first few hours of the window. We called FlatRate and were told A) there was no pickup scheduled for that day despite the fact that we had confirmation emails not only from a FlatRate employee but also their automated system and B) the pickup would have to be scheduled later in the week on a day we were no longer in Colorado. After spending time talking with 2 different people at FlatRate, a supervisor told us that the automated system had sent us a pickup confirmation in error and that was a common mistake. He said, "We don't know why it does that, but it does. I'm sorry." This still didn't make any sense to us because despite any malfunction of an automated system, we had written confirmation from our sales rep we had been working with. Additionally, FlatRate had already charged our credit card the day before which only happens when the pickup is confirmed. After making it clear that we were unable to come back on any other day and supervise the items being packed, the supervisor made arrangements for a truck to execute pick up that day. Our whole day was spent re-organizing the move for the planned date and then waiting for the truck to show up. A fundamental error such as the pick up day and window being incorrect (after a human and automated confirmation) is absolutely unacceptable, especially when you live out of state and are taking the time to fly in specifically for the move. 2) PHILADELPHIA DELIVERY: On the receiving end in Philadelphia, the Colorado shipment also proved problematic. We emailed our sales rep and Dejon Reid (VP of Sales!) multiple times to coordinate the delivery date and received confirmation for Nov 19-20. I reached out to both gentlemen on Nov 8 and again on Nov 13 to advise them that the Philadelphia Police Department was only able to give us a parking permit for the delivery truck on Nov 19 so that is the date we needed to lock in. We never heard back from either. On Nov 14 we received an email from an employee saying that our shipment was enroute and there were no delays. On Nov 16 we received an email from the Long Distance Department confirming the shipment was still enroute and the current estimated delivery window was Nov 17-20. With no further information and no response from our sales rep or the VP of Sale about locking in Nov 19, we were forced to call FlatRate on Nov 18. The representative said, "I don't have Nov 19 confirmed and will inform you once we have a date available" implying we had no prior communication with FlatRate about the delivery date whatsoever. We were frustrated beyond belief: how was there no record of the Nov 19-20 window that the VP and the sales rep confirmed and now we were being told there was actually no date on the books at all? We explained the entire situation to the representative who had to escalate our situation only to come back and confirm Nov 19 an hour and half later. I understand that it is difficult for FlatRate to confirm exact dates and times but it should be noted that on Oct 31 the sales rep confirmed a delivery date of Nov 17th via email; so, if he could do it once, why could it not be confirmed again two days LATER than the original planned date and if it couldn't be confirmed why wasn't that communicated to us? Also, we were extremely disappointed that we were emailing with a VP at their company who never responded to our emails after Nov 8 and let our move fall through the cracks to again be dealt with by us, the end customers. 3) CLAIM PROCESS: The claim process was just as bad as the rest of this experience. Filing the claim and then waiting 2 months for FlatRate to tell us they would give us $450 for the $7k worth of items that were damaged was insulting. We then filed an appeal. We were continually told they were still looking into it every time we followed up. Months later still no answer. This is customer service at its worse. If you do decide to use FlatRate, please make sure to get the highest insurance possible.

Photos are posted to show above. read more

Photos are posted to show above.

This is my 57th review and I pride myself on being fair and even handed. While I have not always been delighted with the services I have received, I have never called a company deplorable- nor would I do so lightly. I was having my apt painted and floors redone so needed to have my furniture removed, hence my call to Flat Rate. I carefully planned the timing of the painters, flooring install, and the movers (even allotting a few days"wiggle room") as I was having people over for Passover and Easter. The first group of movers pick up my furniture to bring to Flat Rates' warehouse in NJ. A little over a week later, they were to be returned. The second group of movers arrive and were almost finished, when I was advised that there was "a problem." I accompany him to my lobby where I find my very expensive side buffet, upside down with the back leg and adjoining area smashed to pieces. He admitted this was his fault and that it occurred days before when loading my furniture from the warehouse into the truck. I asked why someone from Flat Rate didn't call me prior to delivery? He was instructed to deliver it broken, and to advise me to file a clam. This was the first red flag- Flat Rate was aware they damaged my furniture and yet, for some inexplicable reason, felt no obligation to let me know beforehand? I called customer service immediately and assumed they would be as concerned as I was. I assumed incorrectly - their response was "oh, sorry -fill out the form and send it back to us". I filled out the form, included photos, and a receipt which shows the cost of the piece. They also ask for the weight - which is absurd. Not sure about all of you, but I can't for the life of me remember when I weighed a piece of my furniture. Clearly another red flag. Saying I was devastated about the damage that Flat Rate caused would be an gross understatement. Just to clarify, if this were a piece from Crate & Barrel, sure I would be upset, but we are talking about a piece that was bought as an investment, and over $6,900. Since I was aware of the value, I opted for their insurance which was to cove me for $10,000. I receive an ambiguous email from their Customer Service Dept - I say ambiguous as it was signed "customer service" (no actual name of a person to follow-up with). They tell me to contact "their vendor" All Furniture Services so they can come and assess the damage. AFS arrives three days later - the guy tells me how great he is, and that he can "fix it" Fix it? Even if AFS were miracle workers and could "fix it", the piece would no longer have the same value. To add insult to injury, I needed to call 20 people to tell them to find alternative arrangements for the holidays as I now have a large piece of furniture sitting in my kitchen, and my kitchen furniture in my living room, so clearly I cannot have people over- another big thank you to Flat Rate from my friends & family whose holiday plans were cancelled the day before! I then receive an email to advise that my claim is now "closed". They have graciously decided to offer me $250.00 as a "courtesy". So Flat Rate just damaged a $6,900 piece of furniture, and their idea of settling my claim is to offer me $250.00? They said I can have it repaired by AFS for $450.00. As per Flat Rate, I have a $500.00 deductible so while they state that they will "repair or replace any damaged furniture", in actuality, you are the one who pays for the repair. I am far from obtuse so what am I missing here? I still have the broken piece of furniture in my kitchen (where their men promptly dumped it) and my apartment looks as though I just moved-in, instead of just being redone. Flat Rate is not disputing that the caused the damage - so the big question is why would any reputable company not take responsibility and offer to replace the piece? They are under the misconception that an offer of $250. will cover my inconvenience Inconvenience doesn't even begin to describe what I have been through - all due to Flat Rates' negligence. They have decided to wash their hands of the matter, I on the other hand have not. I called Customer Service to ask for the name/email address for someone on their management team. Nope sorry - "we cannot provide that information" I work in management for one of the largest privately owned companies in the U.S. We gladly provide contact info for anyone in our company. Why? - because any company with integrity actually WANTS to hear from their customers -whether for a compliment or complaint. That is what good companies do. That is what ethics and good business practices are all about. Clearly Flat Rate has none. read more
