Worst moving experience of my entire life - they asked for bribes, broke our stuff, and charged an exorbitant amounts avoid at all costs.

DO NOT USE FLATRATE BY ANY MEANS!!! A brief summary of our experience: 1) Initial consultation conducted four weeks prior to our move went well, and we agreed on timing and rates well in advance. 2) Flatrate confirmed multiple times in the week leading up to our move. 3) Move day came and Flatrate DID NOT SHOW, did not even give us a courtesy call to let us know that they did not hire a crew for our move. 4) We called to see if there was traffic or some reasonable explanation for the delay and the lies started shortly thereafter - either they had a crew and they were confirming ETA, or they didn't have a crew and were working on finding one, or they could do the move that day, or it would have to be Sunday or Monday (after our lease was up). They strung us along for four hours, during which we could have gotten another crew if they had just been up front about their failure to actually schedule a crew to perform their obligations under the contract. 5) We called ROADWAY MOVERS and they stepped up to the plate after it was clear that Flatrate had been lying to us all day long. ROADWAY had movers there within a few hours (even at the drop-of-a-hat request), finished the job that day, CHARGED LESS THAN FLATRATE FOR THE SAME MOVE AT LAST MINUTE NOTICE, delivered every single item in perfect condition from an elevator building, and only charged us a 20% deposit up-front. After realizing they had double-counted the deposit, ROWADAY refunded us IMMEDIATELY. 6) Flatrate took the ENTIRE payment up-front and still has not refunded us after multiple calls and emails. Moral of the story: If you actually want to move on your move-in day, do not deal with these people. They overpromise and quite literally did not deliver at all. Unreliable, mickey-mouse operation and not trustworthy in our experience. Would highly recommend ROADWAY over Flatrate any day of the week. read more

I just moved from NYC to CT and this was the most seamless move of my life. I was notified when the movers were close, and was able to track their location until I finally got a text saying they had arrived. Everything was wrapped and handled expertly and with care. Nothing got scratched and nothing broke along the way. Both men were very nice and very professional. Would highly recommend this moving company to anyone. read more

Very good service. I moved out of state and it went very smoothly. Everyone I dealt with from sales to dispatch and crew was efficient, courteous and reliable. The pricing was fair. I have had bad moving experiences and was skeptical but this company is the real deal. read more

Highly recommend this company! We used them last year, as well as this year when we moved. The 3 movers were very professional, kind, efficient, and careful with all of our furniture. Considering it was snowing, and we were moving from a 3-floor walk up, I was really impressed they kept such great spirits, energy, and stamina throughout the whole move. There were no surprises, and I like that the company sends a rep to assess all the items to be moved, so it's straightforward. They also sent a manager mid-move to check on how things were going. All in all very impressed! Thank you Marco and team, you guys were great!! read more

We used Flat Rate yesterday for a move on the UES of Manhattan. Luciano was the lead mover, along with two other people. The real feel temperature was around 104, and they worked for hours, and they were just GREAT! They never complained, always asked us if we needed anything else, came up with some really smart strategies to move us as quickly and safely as possible, and were a real joy to work with. Moving is always a time of stress, and they made the move so much easier - thanks! read more

I am surprised by all the negative reviews in Yelp which almost made me avoid this company. However, they were recommended by two friends and I got the best customer service during my quote hunt. So I went with them and have no regrets. First, Laurence Yates (sales) was extremely responsive, helpful and patient. I admit I was a difficult customer who was overwhelmed by the move and the events surrounding it. I had to make many changes to the moving plan. Laurence was steadfast, generous and understanding. He got me through the worst of it, all the way up to last minute changes. On the day of the move Jonathan and Francisco were top notch, patient and hardworking. Thank you Flat Rate team for making a major life transition go so smoothly. read more

If you value customer service, responsiveness, accurate information, and efficiency, DO NOT use these guys for a long distance move. The sales "specialist" who booked my move gave me all sorts of inaccurate information, never offered me boxes or delivery on them, and it only got worse from there. They showed up without protection for the floor and of course damaged it, and I had to stop them multiple times from attempting to use dollies on my bare floors. At one point I found the slowest crew member hanging out in the hallway chatting on his phone and had to get one of the other two to tell him to get his lazy ass back to work. It took three guys nearly SIX hours to move out the belongings from my small one-bedroom apartment (with a freight elevator, it's not like I had stairs), and I didn't even have any bedroom furniture besides a mattress! The number of boxes I wound up with was higher than the initial estimate, and when the foreman called in to change the inventory list I overheard him telling them I had TWICE as many extra boxes as I did. Had I not caught him and actually done the math correctly for him and insisted he give them an accurate number, they would have overcharged me even more than they already have. Pathetic. A manager or owner from the local office stopped by mid-move to see how things were going, and I made it clear that I was unhappy. He assured me that they'd take good care of my things, and that once everything was loaded onto the truck I would *receive regular updates* every 24-48 hours regarding the truck's progress. Not a word. For an entire week. And of course then it was a holiday so no one was in the office. I e-mailed, left messages with the answering service, and eventually spoke to 3 different people once they were back in the office, all of whom assured me that someone would call me back regarding my queries...no one ever did. Truly disgusting, and not even remotely acceptable for the price I paid. Now dealing with the LA office is turning out to be just as much of a headache - spare yourself the frustration and expense and use a different company. read more

Henry and Pablo came right on time and moved my studio from the Upper East Side to Prospect Heights. They were courteous, efficient and careful with my stuff, which they protected very well. They took my bed and table apart and put them back together. I tipped them well and I encourage you to do the same if you're happy with the service. When you call for a quote and then sign the contract, it's pretty bureaucratic- you get transferred a few times and have to confirm all your details every single time. But everyone I spoke to at FlatRate was helpful, and theirs was the cheapest of three flat-rate quotes I got for this move. read more

My friend recommended me their service but after doing my quotation I understand that this is not a serious company. Customer service was very rude during the virtual showing, did not even listen to my questions and requests and was late to the appointment with the camera not even position on him to avoid eye contact. The quote was $1400 while other moving services range from $500 - $700. I will definitely not move forward with this poor customer service company and highly not recommend it. read more

Movers never showed up. Said they were having some issues and could no longer make it. I found this out when I called them 30 minutes after they were scheduled to arrive at my apartment ON THE DAY OF THE MOVE. It's been almost a week and I haven't received a refund (they charged me prior to move day), and are "making a decision" as to whether they provide any sort of compensation for the additional expenses we've had to incur because they canceled on the day of our move (e.g., prorated rent payment for my old apartment, surcharge for hiring last minute movers). I literally pulled an all nighter with my husband on the day of our move trying to carry boxes/furniture ourselves and unpack enough to be able to have a place to sleep (as well as deal with their horrible customer service). read more

This entire company is a joke. What a terrible experience. They destroyed an antique dresser during the move. Despite me paying for the most comprehensive insurance possible, the claims process has now taken 3+ month claims and they are only willing to pay a tiny fraction of the damage they caused. They are impossible to reach over the phone and very slow to respond to any other channels like email. Please do not make the mistake of using these movers. I have wasted countless hours dealing with these people and have never been so frustrated with a moving company. read more

I coudn't be happier with FlatRate. They gave me a quote minutes after i requested one and walked me through the quote over the phone. The movers came right at the beginning of their time window and were one in about three hours (not that that matters because its a flatrate). The men could not have been nicer. The were so kind, so efficient and had the absolute best attitudes, especially considering I was moving from a 4th fl walkup to a 3rd floor walkup. 100% would use them again read more

Strongly discourage others from using this moving company. I paid nearly $3,000 for a full service move to have my 1-bedroom apartment moved 10 blocks south. Flat Rate came to my old apartment to inventory all of my furniture, so they knew exactly what I had and priced it accordingly. Nevertheless, on moving day, the team showed up very late and was unable to complete my move in the time windows required by both my old and new buildings (resulting in an overage fee). In addition, the movers scratched the door of my old building, left several items of furniture in the apartment, and neglected to pick up the boxes I left to be donated even though the agent I worked with--Matt Ockers--promised those would be picked up. All in, the damages caused by FlatRate resulted in a $650 fine from my old building that is being taken out of my security deposit. I initially forwarded the email from my old Superintendent to Brian Nalty and Matt Ockers that outlined the damages and included pictures of the issues. They replied saying I should file a claim. Given that I'm 8.5 months pregnant and I already paid for a full-service move, I felt like the company should simply reimburse me for the issues. I then reached out to Flat Rate corporate--Brian Nalty, Matt Ockers and Ricardo McKenzie--and never got a response. Overall, it was an incredibly poor experience. I paid for a full service move and received extremely poor service and lack of responsiveness throughout. I strongly urge anyone considering them to go with a different company. read more

We could not be more satisfied with our moving services from Flat Rate Moving. Sean, William, and Randy were friendly, professional, fast, and careful with our items. When wrapping our items, they added layers of plastic to ensure that they arrived in perfect condition on a very rainy day. We were given extra boxes as needed, tape, and paper for glassware/delicate items at no extra cost. Once arrived, the team spent time placing our items exactly where we would like them, and also took. care removing all plastic and packaging from our new space - this was really nice:) This is an extremely affordable and excellent service. Thank you to this awesome team! One more glow to add: the guys even encouraged us to let them take over our odds and ends/pillows/random stuff that we were just going to drive over in an attempt to save. Just such incredible service. Thank you! We'd recommend this company to all of our family and friends as we had a wonderful experience. read more

Terrific moving experience. They treated my furniture and personal items like they were their own. They were very experienced and wrapped all furniture items effectively. Everything was delivered in pristine condition. The only issue was confusion over the tip. Their website says you can tip online, but they asked for cash. Regardless, it's tough to find great movers in NYC that aren't too expensive or charge you an absurd price. I heavily recommend to any friends or acquaintances to use their services. It's hard enough to find movers who won't break everything and they exceeded expectations. read more

Nightmare!!! This was my first job that I was forced to quit in a month. The management team - Dejon and Leah - were the worse people to work with. Leah, doesn't have any clue what she is doing there. I do have 7 years experience in moving industry and I do have enough knowledge to do my job properly and I had some conflict with her while I was working there by giving me different orders and telling me what to do in which many times it didn't make any sense. On the other hand, I had Dejon who was knowledgeable about the moving industry but, he loves using people badly. When I got interviewed by him - he claimed that we are looking for a few strong candidate to hire since now there have a bigger cake and now ''there are willing to share this larger cake with more new employees'' BIG LIE. He uses this strategy only to hire new employees only for the busy season (summer time) and fire them on fall when the moving industry starts to slow down. The environment is to toxic and the payment is terrible. They promises you a lot and don't do anything about it. Empty promises. I hope they will get their things together and make that place better before they file for bankruptcy. read more

Response to business : To be clear AGAIN, my issue isn't the price, its the lack of accuracy and the need to finesse a potential customer during THE INTERACTION WITH YOUR TEAM. Customer service starts from the time you pick up the phone. You sent me an agent who had no idea as to how far my move was after taking the list of inventory and leaving. Your company was the only company who left without giving me a quote after telling me someone didnt pick up(I actually heard the phone ringing nonstop). Of course I didn't move forward with your team, why would I do business with someone who couldnt give me a proper quote without proper knowledge of the mileage. What a joke! read more

Big thanks to the mover's team: Daniel, Eduardo, Luciano; they did a super job! Moving is super stressful but with them, they help me to reduce the stress: they were super professional, cordial and very well organized. Big plus also: you can track everything online (the truck for ex, signing the contract etc). I moved from NJ to PA and the price was correct too. I would totally recommend this company! thanks. Can't believe I haven't written a review yet - I've used these guys for NYC moves at least 4-5 times, as the couple times I tried another company I regretted it immensely. Great service, movers are friendly and professional. Nothing has ever gotten lost or damaged in the many moves I've had, and they really do just charge the agreed-upon rate. They also have some cool perks like a truck tracker so you can see where they are. Jose on the sales team is awesome and always makes sure everything goes smoothly. Highly recommend! read more

Do not use FlatRate. Movers did the oldest dirty trick in the moving business. When they arrived they let me know that I had more items than what was on the inventory. The inventory was from my previous move 2 years ago and was suggested by FlatRate. I said "yes' to keep make it simple and also because I had less than what was moved two years ago. When the movers arrived they checked the inventory against the content in my apt. They let me know I had more than the inventory and that it would cost more. It would be cheaper, of course, to pay them instead of calling the company. I let them know that I didnt not need to move that day and would be happy to call the office. I also let them know that if Flatrate didnt want the business they could leave and I would get someone else. They told me they would go ahead with the move as a favor and started to load the truck. The request for cash payment started again once again after the truck was loaded. It was more work than expected, the office would charge more, and they would work with me. Called the company and spoke with Rosa who put the blame back on me because I had three items more than the inventory. Let me be clear...I was given the option by FlatRate to use the inventory from 2 years ago and there were three items not on the list. FlatRate was due the money for those items but did not really care about how I was treated by the movers. The movers made a stressful day worse by demanding cash and the company was complacent. I was an advocate for the company before.. now a detractor that will do what I can to get the word out. read more

Hired these guys to move a one bedroom apartment into a storage unit. Everything started out ok, until they realized they were going to miss the window at the storage facility. Someone at the main office screwed up and didn't relay the times correctly (I had reminded them twice of the time constraints). So, rather than finish the job right, by wrapping/protecting all the furniture and electronics they promised to, they threw everything into wardrobe boxes, skipped wrapping larger items and rushed to the place, only to arrive 5 minutes before close. Of course, I only found this out today, when I began to unload my stuff. Speakers crammed loose in with end tables, stuff broken, and no sign of the feet for my sofa. The lesson? If you use these guys, watch them the ENTIRE TIME to make sure you get the wrapping/handling your pay (top dollar) for. Or don't use them at all. Added one star for the customer service follow up, which rebates me a little for the inconveniences. Won't cover a new couch and sound bar though. read more

Just had a fantastic experience with Alberto and his team from flatrate. They were almost an hour early just to make sure they were on time and had great attitudes. They were efficient and worked like a well oiled machine and took special care, like protecting the corners in our new home so that there wouldn't be any scrape damage. Other movers estimated it would be a 7-8 hour job and they were done in about 4 hours. I would highly recommend Alberto and his team specifically. read more

Steve and Charles were absolute rock stars, making the nasty business of moving completely stress free and easy. I have some unreasonably heavy and complex furniture that didn't even phase them, and the weirdos did the whole thing with a smile! We used Flat Rate moving & storage during 2021. Our storage unit flooded with river water with $30,000 of possessions in it - everything was destroyed with water damage. Their storage unit is built in an East River flood zone. We filed a detailed claim for $25,000 in damages. Flat Rate is offering us $1000 in return, or 60 cents per pound. They refuse to let us speak with a human, answer our emails, or be reasonable in any way. Others have filed similar complaints with the BBB. These people are immoral. Avoid them. Try Maxi Moving instead - they are real people. read more

We hired Flatrate to move us within Westchester. The only smooth part of the process was the virtual walkthrough price assessment. After that, everything went downhill. Communication has been absolutely horrendous with no followup on questions or complaints. Primary screw-up was that flatrate forgot to send packers the day before our move. We paid for the company to pack us up. Initially, we had asked if it would be possible to move and pack on the same day, but were told it was not possible because there was too much stuff. Understandable. So, I had to cancel all of my scheduled appointments at work and take the day off. Then, nobody showed up on packing day!! They messed it up and by the time we discovered this, they didn't have a crew to send. So, they ended up packing us on the morning of the move, which as they had initially predicted, was too hectic for one day. On the day of the move, they underestimated how much stuff would fit in the truck so they ended up having to make 2 trips with their truck so they didn't finish until around 10PM. The actual moving guys were very hardworking and for the most part did a great job. Some of the packing was subpar but generally things arrived without much damage. There were a few items that did get damaged though, including a brand new home theater speaker and a baby crib. There have been multiple attempts to get this resolved including reaching out to customer service, submitting the necessary forms and receipts, phone calls, etc. It has been over 2 months since our move and nobody has ever responded. I was hoping they would get back to us without me resorting to leaving a public review, but even after I sent feedback through their website and requested to be contacted, STILL nobody has reached out to us. Nobody called to follow up on the damaged items and nobody even reached out to apologize for the huge screwup of forgetting to send a packing team the day before the move. I understand that every moving company can have their good days and bad days, but it has been over 2 months now since our move and the absolute lack of communication is unacceptable. They got their money so now it's complete radio silence! It is amazing to me that such unprofessionalism still exists. If you need to move, go with another company. read more

This was the worst moving experience ever. Although the relocation consultant and technician were helpful, the operations and customer service department are an utter disaster. I booked a pretty simple move from Manhattan to Brooklyn and was explicit about the fact that someone would have to break down my couch, transport it, and reassemble it at my new apartment. I sent a picture of my couch to the relocation consultant and told him I used The Couch Doctor when I moved the couch into my apartment. Flat Rate moving not only showed up without a technician to deconstruct my couch, but the customer service department had the nerve to tell me that I wasn't clear in my request, despite the fact that I sent an email and picture with explicit instructions. My relocation consultant actually agreed that I was very clear with my instructions and didn't understand why the operations department didn't send a technician to deconstruct myself. Just when I thought it couldn't get any worse, Flat Rate wanted to increase the rate they charged me to move from $980 to over $1500 for the 'added" service that should have been included in my quote. Or course I told them they could kick rocks. It has been 2 days since my move and I have repeatedly tried to call Flat Rates' customer service department and I have yet to reach anyone. Additionally, my relocation consultant has requested the customer service department to contact me and insisted at this point there is nothing he can do. In short, this company may have a "flat rate" but they misquote you to get your business, try to up sell you when you have limited options, then don't respond when you want to give feedback or rectify a problem. Worst experience we've had with movers. 8 hours into the move when we were moving out of a rental home, they called and said they needed to double the cost or they wouldn't do the job. Since we were moving out, we had no choice and they knew it. They assured us on costs ahead time after examining all the pieces, and there were no changes after that. Then after we agreed to it we came to find out the next day that they left the biggest piece they were supposed to move and store and when we called and said what happened, they said it was too late in the day and would need us to pay for another day. Just a scammy group that does this often as all the other reviews show. We have used several of the other moving companies and would strongly suggest finding better groups than FlatRate. read more

DO NOT use Flat Rate movers!!! Our movers never showed up and when we called after our time window had passed, they dispatched unprepared movers that had a half full truck. These guys didn't have any blankets/wrapping, and didn't even show up until 5:30pm (our window was 1-3). I watched in horror as they damaged our complex's door into our apartment (smashed in) and they created 3 massive holes because they didn't have tools to remove the legs from our couch. The holes couldn't be patched and required days worth of labor and sheet rock to be repaired. Since the truck was full, we had to borrow a friend's truck and move the remainder of our things since at this point it was 10pm and they still hadn't gotten to our new apartment!! Once they got there, I learned that my Crate & Barrel dining room chair was stained because they didn't have blankets, my sofa was ripped, my lamp shape completely crushed, and my Pottery Barn dining room table had chunks of wood missing. They left an absolute MESS, including wardrobe boxes everywhere with clothes thrown at the bottom since they did not have enough boxes. They were unprofessional and didn't even have any tools with them and relied on my boyfriend's drill which he was transporting back and forth so that we could get our furniture moved. We received complaints from both of our complexes due to the move happening so late on a weeknight with no regard for the fact that it was now almost midnight. In the end, after causing over $2,000+ of documented damage, they're only willing to reimburse $441 to which I now have to seek legal action. Run as fast as you can away from these "movers" and never use them!!! read more

I honestly wish I could leave ZERO stars. Avoid this company at all costs. They sent an estimate, I updated the items, and was told the fee would be the same. The moving foreman did nothing but complain the entire time, repeatedly saying it was more than was on his list. I showed him the final approved inventory, but it did not stop his whining. more complaints on the delivery end, but his crew was silent, so I tipped them well, even though they damaged a few items. Broken glass in boxes, paint ripped off furniture where they placed packing tape. scrapes across the floors in the new place. The worst of it however, was the scarring to my sleigh bed. gouged across the footboard, and a side rail has a chunk missing. The foreman, who pretended not to know how it happened, wanted to fix it with a crayon, but I declined. It was obviously dropped and/or fell over in the truck, and DEFINITELY was not wrapped correctly. I submitted a claim, and found someone to repair it for $675, which is not bad for a $4,000 bed. After almost two months of ignored emails and phone calls, their response was, and I quote, "Your claim has been settled and closed in accordance with the elected coverage for your move. Copied below is the settlement letter you will receive in the mail with your settlement check. Please allow 7-14 business days for your check to be processed prior to mailing". The settlement amount? $246.00. Less than I tipped the incompetent crew. Trust me, Avoid FlatRate Moving at all costs, because I assure you, it will cost you in the end. I had a second move a week later, originally scheduled with FlatRate, but canceled after the poor service. The replacement company I used was phenomenal. Look for my review. If you have an upcoming move, short or long distance I HIGHLY suggest that you book with ZeroMax Movers. Fantastic, friendly, and hardworking crew, unlike FlatRate. read more

Useless! Throwing my stuff directly in the garbage. I trusted that the storage facility was weather proof. My items were delivered soggy and moldy. The foreman admitted to the fact that everything sat in water for many months- my whole home contents ruined! The response was "not our fault" - "Sitting in water" at the warehouse as the mover tells me when unpacking the truck, wet, smelly boxes. It destroyed over $7,000 worth of my personal goods. Furniture, clothes, air conditioner and more. Insure acne was purchased for this purpose. To protect my stuff. Absolutely unexpected! Absolutely not acceptable! read more

If there could be less then one star. Terrible. Awful. I would not recommend this company at all. This was for a move from LA to NY. I got a quote. Then on move day. They called and said it would be almost 1000 extra (so much for the flatrate?!). Then they said there was no extra charge. During the move everything was mixed together so it arrived completely unorganized. The did not pay any attention to signs. Like ship upright or flat or fragile. When it was on a local truck for delivery, they loaded the work onto a small truck they could not accommodate the move and so part of the move had to go back to their warehouse. Not to mention, wood broke in two. And also there truck broke during the move. For the item that went back to the warehouse I was told that I had to follow up because that it was not a given I would get it back. Lastly these people are not cheap and I got many quotes prior that were at least half of their rate. I would highly recommend going with a cheaper company as you will get the same level of service. read more

After moving with Flat Rate, they were non-responsive about where my items were being stored. I called and emailed for weeks before being told four different locations that my items were being stored at in three different boroughs. I finally was given an address only to discover that they put my belongings in a self storage unit in Glendale, NY even though their website promises that they own and operate all of their facilities. I had to fight to get an appointment to check on my belongings which they tried charging me $160 for. In the end, I decided to hire different movers to get my belongings out of their control as they are running a scam with their storage services. Everything they promise in regards to storage on their website is false. Dealing with admin has been a total nightmare, and after 6 weeks, I have still not been reimbursed for unauthorized charges to my card. In short, if you are storing with them, get your stuff out of their control as quickly as possible. It is not being stored where you think it is. Do not use Flatrate at any cost. We originally signed up to move with them for a cross-country move from New York to San Francisco. We ended up going with another company and cancelled before the 48-hour period of Flatrate's contract going into affect. Somehow they ended up charging us the full amount of $5k. Then, after we told them we had actually cancelled within an appropriate time, they only refunded us half our money when they were supposed to return the entire 5K. Over the past month we have been tirelessly chasing Flatrate and in communication with their customer service team who promised us they would reverse the incorrect fee of $2500 that was not refunded to us. The customer service rep was helpful at first then completely disappeared. However, the remaining refund never happened. For the last two weeks we have been trying to get ahold of their customer service team, but they don't pick up their customer service line even during normal business hours. Flatrate promised a full refund, for a service they never provided, and has yet to follow-through on their word and return our money. Do not use this company. read more

I'd offer five stars if we were simply talking about the movers. They were prompt, careful and expedient. They handled everything as I'd requested and were more than patient and thoughtful throughout the process. The same cannot be said for customer service. Flat Rate has failed to reimburse me for charges I'm clearly owed from over a month ago. I have this information agreed to and in writing. However they have failed to respond to repeated emails and phone calls in the month since my move. Pretty disappointing for what is considered to be a reputable company. I hope to hear back from someone soon to reimburse me for the money that is rightfully owed. read more

The pre-move process is simple. They book time to come see the stuff and take notes. However, on the day of the move, we were told we had more than what they listed. For full transparency, they do send you the list to confirm but in the pressure of a big move, it's tough to go through it item by item. I'd suggest you do that so that you're not hassled on the big day. I had to get on the phone with customer service. Bernadette was very helpful and waived the charges. Moving staff were great too but the glass of a framed painting broke. Looks like the claim process is nonexistent. I've written to them twice already but have yet to hear back. read more

Update 2: The company made everything right yesterday and finished the move, so I am updating to 2 stars. I will update once I receive payment, should be about 2 weeks. Thank you for correcting this situation! Update: If you have a bad experience with this company, leave a bad Yelp review--it is the only way they will contact you. I received a call from customer service directly after posting, and they were very nice and helpful. They are giving me a partial refund and sending over another truck to finish the move this evening. I agreed to update my Yelp review, and I have removed names. Original review: FlatRate Moving is a SCAM--they did not complete my move, lied, and will not return my calls! This whole move has been a disaster, and the movers lied to my face. The company will not return my calls, nor will the lead mover. I spent $1360 to move one bedroom from Queens to the Bronx, and an additional $300 in tips, and for that amount of payment they won't even dignify me with a call for incomplete service. I'm sure if the move goes well, it's great--but if it doesn't, THEY WILL NOT RETURN YOUR CALLS. First I called on Friday during business hours to update my inventory, as I decided to leave some of the furniture behind, and I had mistakenly told them that it was 4 flights when it was really 2; so I wanted to update this information, but I could not get a hold of anyone. Saturday morning, May 26th, for some reason my card was not going through, so they asked me to go to the bank and get a cashier's check. My lead mover's manager told him he was not permitted to move until I returned. I apologized for the inconvenience and pointed out the things that needed to be moved, which was very clear and all was listed on the inventory. At this point I was happy with the service and not concerned. Then the lead mover called me while I was at the bank and said that he trusted me and would meet me at the new apartment. Had he waited as he was legally instructed by his manager none of this would have happened. My roommate called me when they were getting ready to leave and said that they hadn't packed everything. The lead mover told me that it was just the futon which they were unable to move, and I figured that I didn't care about it. No big deal. So I met them at the new apartment, they were very careful with my things and efficient, so I tipped them each $100. I noticed that some boxes were missing, but they said they had everything and were not able to return. It turns out they WERE able to return, because he said, "We made a big mistake and forgot your bed frame, so we need to go back for it." Great. I'm still happy at this point. I reminded them of a large box (that was with the other boxes) in the living room, a mirror, and 5 boxes in the closet. They said they would make sure they got them. They came back with the one large box and told me that they had already packed the boxes from the closet. I gave them the benefit of the doubt. I returned to my apartment the next day to finish cleaning and found an entire van's worth of boxes that they had not moved, plus a very small nightstand that they had moved out of the bedroom but not to the truck, and a small bookshelf that I had clearly asked them to move and was clearly in the inventory. I called the lead mover and the company and left multiple messages (again during business hours), but nobody returned my calls. Finally I started texting the lead mover and threatening to make formal complaints, at which point he was motivated to call me back and told me he would return the following evening (yesterday, Monday) at 6:00 with his own van to complete the move. Great. I can understand a mistake and was grateful he was willing to correct it. He said he'd call on the way over. So I show up early and wait until 7:30, called and texted multiple times, but he was a no show--he didn't even call to cancel. At this point I have an entire van's worth of furniture and boxes that were not moved, the company will not return my calls, I don't have a car, and I am out $1660 for moving from a one-bedroom to a one-bedroom, both within NYC. Fortunately I have a friend with a van, and I am going to pay him $100 plus dinner to help me finish moving tomorrow evening after work. In summary the company did not complete the job, lied, was then a no-show, and will not return my calls. I can understand if they were to call me back and apologize and give me a partial reimbursement (or better, finish the job), but for the amount I paid and no phone call? Totally unprofessional. BIG SCAM, save your money and go elsewhere. At this point I do not expect anything from them because they are liars who do not follow through on their word. Stay away! I lost a lot of money! This was not an innocent mistake, because my roommates SHOWED them the remaining boxes and they refused to pack them. read more

This is my 57th review and I pride myself on being fair and even handed. While I have not always been delighted with the services I have received, I have never called a company deplorable nor would I do so lightly. I was having my apt painted and floors redone and needed to have my furniture removed for the duration, hence my call to Flat Rate. I carefully planned the timing of the painters, flooring install and the movers; (even allotting a few days of "wiggle room" just in case) as I was having people over for both Passover and Easter. The first group of movers picked up my items to bring them to Flat Rates' warehouse in NJ. A little over a week later, they were to be returned. The second group of movers arrived and were almost finished when I was advised that there was "a problem." The mover asked me to accompany him to my lobby where I found my very expensive side buffet, upside down with the back leg and adjoining area smashed to pieces. He admitted that this was his fault, and that this actually occurred days prior as they were loading my furniture from their warehouse into the truck. I asked why someone from Flat Rate didn't call me prior to delivery? The mover indicated he was instructed to deliver it broken, and to advise me to file a clam. This was the first red flag- Flat Rate was aware that their men damaged my furniture and yet, fir some inexplicable reason felt no obligation to advise me of same. I called their customer service dept immediately and incorrectly assumed they would be as concerned as I was. Their response "oh, sorry - can you please just take some pics, fill out the form and send it back to us." I filled out the form, included photos, a receipt which clearly shows the cost of the piece. They also ask for the weight of the piece which I think is absurd. Not sure about all of you, but I just can't for the life of me remember when was the last time I weighed a piece of my furniture. Clearly another red flag. Saying I was devastated about the damage that Flat Rate caused would be an understatement. Just to clarify, if this were a piece of furniture I purchased from Crate & Barrel, sure I would be upset, but we are talking about a piece of furniture that was bought as an investment and was over $6,900. Since I was aware of the value, I opted for their insurance which valued my property at $10,000. I then receive an ambiguous email from their Customer Service Dept - I say ambiguous as it was signed "customer service" which indicated that I needed to contact their vendor, All Furniture Services, so they can assess the damage. All Furniture arrives three days later, the guy tells me how great he is, and that he can "fix it" Fix it? Even if All Furniture were miracle workers and could "fix it" the piece would no longer have the same value. To add insult to injury, I needed to call 20 people and tell them to find alternative arrangements for the holidays - so another big thank you to Flat Rate from my friends & family whose holiday plans were cancelled the day before. I then receive an email to advise that my claim is "now closed" and they would like to offer me $250.00 as a "courtesy compensation" So Flat Rate just damaged a $6,900 piece of furniture, and their idea of settling my claim is to offer me $250.00? They also advise that I can have it repaired by All Furniture Services for $450.00. As per Flat Rate, I have a $500.00 deductible so while they state that they will repair or replace any damaged furniture, in actuality you are the one who pays for the repair. I am far from obtuse so what am I missing here? I am now sitting with the broken piece of furniture in my kitchen (where their men promptly "dumped" it) although it belongs in my living room. My apt looks as if I just moved in instead of having just been redone. And while the damage was due to Flat Rate's negligence, they have now washed their hands of the matter and feel that an offer of a $250.00 check will cover my inconvenience ( It cost more than $250. to have the piece professional cleaned). Inconvenience doesn't even begin to describe what I have been through and again, all due to Flat Rates' negligence. They have decided to wash their hands of the matter, I on the other hand have not. My next call was again to their customer service, to ask for a name/ email address for someone on their management team. Nope sorry - we cannot provide that information. As someone who works in management for one of the largest privately owned companies in the U.S., we have no issue providing contact info for anyone on our Executive Management Team. Why - because any company with integrity actually wants to hear from their customers -whether for a compliment or a complaint. That is what good companies do. EDIT (March 6): I spoke to Vicky, head of customer service at Flatrate Movers, this week. She saw my yelp review and called me to get more details. I was impressed by the proactive response and her interest in my experience. She assured me that what I described below is not the normal experience, and they have spoken with the movers to remediate the situation. I'm happy now to recommend Flatrate to others, b/c clearly customer satisfaction is their priority. (March 2) We wanted an up-front amount to budget for moving costs, so flatrate seemed ideal. Plus, we investigated 3 other companies and all the quotes seemed to be in the same ballpark. Flatrate got the edge for excellent sales service in assuring us *everything* was included such disassembly & reassembly, extra packing and padding for all the furniture and breakables, and taxes + tolls + expenses. Plus, I thought they might be motivated to work efficiently since there was no hourly rate. I was quoted $950 for *everything* and was told that 4 guys would show up, and it would take around 4-5 hours. We had a 1-br apt on the 2nd floor, and we moved to a 3rd floor walk-up apt. Basic inventory includes bed, 2 dressers, large 8ft ikea wardrobe, couch, 2 desks, 4 chairs, dining table, 2 elfa storage units, 4 bookshelves, 3 large clay planters and @ 30 boxes of stuff. Couple of things to note here: - we told the sales rep that we were moving to a 3rd floor walk-up - we initially forgot to include the 3 clay planters in our inventory list, and we emailed the sales rep 4 days prior to the move to be sure and include these So on the day of the move, we were ready with all the boxes packed and labeled. Our arrival window was 1-3pm and the moving truck arrived at 3pm with 3 movers, apologizing for the delay b/c of problems with the previous move. The foreman was clearly ready to get going since they work on commission and not an hourly rate, as he explained to us several times that day. However, one guy had to sit in the truck the whole time so we only had 2 guys to pack up our apt. The planters were the first thing the foreman complained about - "it's not my responsibility... if anything happens to them, it's not my responsibility b/c that's not on my inventory sheet. That is going to cost you extra." We discussed this for a few minutes, and decided that since we did email the sales rep about the planters, we would be ok for insurance purposes. They moved the planters but didn't add anything to the cost. The movers got everything into the truck in about 2 hours, except for the large ikea wardrobe. That was the next complaint from the foreman... "it's not my responsibility." According to the foreman, he felt like the wardrobe was too risky to move and it would likely break and it wasn't his responsibility, as he kept repeating. We did remind him that it was included in the quote - the disassembly and reassembly in fact - but he was adamant it wasn't his responsibility. Since he was so sure it would not survive the trip, we decided to leave the wardrobe to the next tenant. In hindsight, I guess he wanted to leave it b/c it would take too long to handle and he was in a hurry to finish for the day. So we left the wardrobe - the largest piece of furniture, and likely a chunk of the price quoted. When we arrived at the new apt building, the foreman balked at the walk-up. Apparently, he was not told that the stairs were double flights instead of a straight flight of stairs. We didn't know we had to explain the stairs to the sales rep when we got the quote, but we told him it was a 3rd floor walk-up and it was written on the foreman's papers as a 3rd floor walk-up. The foreman kept balking - "this will cost you extra, someone will have to pay us for this, it takes extra time." So he called flatrate headquarters and talked to them for a while, and then handed the phone to us. We explained that we said 3rd floor walk-up but we didn't know we had to give details about the flights. A few minutes after that call, another rep from flatrate called us again. After much discussion, we were told that sales would have to call us later in the week to discuss how this might impact our final price. We were very upset to hear this since we had left the largest piece of furniture back in the old apartment, with no complaint about getting a refund, and we had been accurate in describing everything in our move. Sales never asked for details like how many stairs are in each flight, etc. That said, the movers worked very hard to get everything upstairs in 2 hours. They finished the day around 8.30pm, so it was about 4 hrs of work and 1.5 hr of transit time. We tipped them 17% on the original cost even though the large wardrobe was left behind. The foreman then took a box of cookies on the counter without even asking me if he could have any - cheeky! read more

We used FlatRate Moving to move our things from a home in Colorado and our home in NYC to our new place in Philadelphia. To put it simply, everything about this move was completely unprofessional and mismanaged. We could not be more disappointed in the lack of service and the aggravation caused at every turn and it ended with our furniture (worth $7k) being delivered broken and a refund of $450 for move that cost just shy of $10k. We submitted a claim and an appeal to the verdict with all information documented with pictures and explanations in powerpoint. Bottom line, a move is stressful enough so you need to work with experienced professionals you can trust. I highly recommend avoiding FlatRate. Here is an outline of our experience: 1) COLORADO PICK UP: After flying from NYC to Colorado explicitly for the confirmed October 27 pickup, the van didn't show in the first few hours of the window. We called FlatRate and were told A) there was no pickup scheduled for that day despite the fact that we had confirmation emails not only from a FlatRate employee but also their automated system and B) the pickup would have to be scheduled later in the week on a day we were no longer in Colorado. After spending time talking with 2 different people at FlatRate, a supervisor told us that the automated system had sent us a pickup confirmation in error and that was a common mistake. He said, "We don't know why it does that, but it does. I'm sorry." This still didn't make any sense to us because despite any malfunction of an automated system, we had written confirmation from our sales rep we had been working with. Additionally, FlatRate had already charged our credit card the day before which only happens when the pickup is confirmed. After making it clear that we were unable to come back on any other day and supervise the items being packed, the supervisor made arrangements for a truck to execute pick up that day. Our whole day was spent re-organizing the move for the planned date and then waiting for the truck to show up. A fundamental error such as the pick up day and window being incorrect (after a human and automated confirmation) is absolutely unacceptable, especially when you live out of state and are taking the time to fly in specifically for the move. 2) PHILADELPHIA DELIVERY: On the receiving end in Philadelphia, the Colorado shipment also proved problematic. We emailed our sales rep and Dejon Reid (VP of Sales!) multiple times to coordinate the delivery date and received confirmation for Nov 19-20. I reached out to both gentlemen on Nov 8 and again on Nov 13 to advise them that the Philadelphia Police Department was only able to give us a parking permit for the delivery truck on Nov 19 so that is the date we needed to lock in. We never heard back from either. On Nov 14 we received an email from an employee saying that our shipment was enroute and there were no delays. On Nov 16 we received an email from the Long Distance Department confirming the shipment was still enroute and the current estimated delivery window was Nov 17-20. With no further information and no response from our sales rep or the VP of Sale about locking in Nov 19, we were forced to call FlatRate on Nov 18. The representative said, "I don't have Nov 19 confirmed and will inform you once we have a date available" implying we had no prior communication with FlatRate about the delivery date whatsoever. We were frustrated beyond belief: how was there no record of the Nov 19-20 window that the VP and the sales rep confirmed and now we were being told there was actually no date on the books at all? We explained the entire situation to the representative who had to escalate our situation only to come back and confirm Nov 19 an hour and half later. I understand that it is difficult for FlatRate to confirm exact dates and times but it should be noted that on Oct 31 the sales rep confirmed a delivery date of Nov 17th via email; so, if he could do it once, why could it not be confirmed again two days LATER than the original planned date and if it couldn't be confirmed why wasn't that communicated to us? Also, we were extremely disappointed that we were emailing with a VP at their company who never responded to our emails after Nov 8 and let our move fall through the cracks to again be dealt with by us, the end customers. 3) CLAIM PROCESS: The claim process was just as bad as the rest of this experience. Filing the claim and then waiting 2 months for FlatRate to tell us they would give us $450 for the $7k worth of items that were damaged was insulting. We then filed an appeal. We were continually told they were still looking into it every time we followed up. Months later still no answer. This is customer service at its worse. If you do decide to use FlatRate, please make sure to get the highest insurance possible. read more

Rating between 2 - 3 stars was debatable. Flat Rate was referred to me by one of my graduate school classmates that had success moving from NYC to MIA. Unfortunately, my experience was not as smooth. I believe generally they are 4/5-star, but my experience was the outlier which I feel no other person, especially someone not covered by corporate expense should endure. On a positive note, the email or phone responsive of the Flat Rate office team is great as is the speed in which items are packed/unpacked, loaded/unloaded by the on-site movers. Also, the paperwork is well laid out. However, the negative is a lack of organization to pack/unpack boxed contents; as well as my move was scheduled against my preferred timing, leading to both inconvenience and inefficiency of delivery plus some of my furniture arrived with damages and all furniture had dust. Also at the end of the first 3-month storage period, I was notified my monthly storage fee would double. I had to refute such gouging and eventually I agreed to a more a nominal increase, but an increase all the same which I found unscrupulous as nothing in original contract said rates could change. It was agreed to in writing and verbally that I would be alerted 48 hours before delivery. Instead not only was it only 24 hour notice, Flat Rate Long Distance decided to proceed with the move on a date when I had tight availability and that my building management could only assign 2 hours use of elevator even though we both requested the day after which was free availability. The movers were there a total of 3 hours and 45 minutes. Given the poor scheduling, I had to take a conference call so I was preoccupied for the first 2 1/2 hours of the move. For what remained, it was difficult to direct the movers due to the missed time and so many items being in my apartment that were brought up to adhere to the 2 hour elevator limit. Also, due to the poor packing of my boxes, and being that I have so many items, it was difficult to properly place items for two reasons, first, the boxes were not detailed in labeling. For instance, books in boxes were labeled to the correct room, but there was no labeling of which shelf, and left to right, based on how it was setup before packing it up. Therefore, without me overseeing, the books were unpacked and haphazardly placed on shelf, mostly back to front. This created aimless work for the movers and extra work for me in completely reorganizing. Second, all furniture had dirt which led me to question were my items not stored wrapped; the dust was caked on. I received no heads up beforehand that this may be the condition they arrive in to prep so unpacking was futile as all furniture had to be thoroughly wiped and sanitized. Given the dust, why would Flat Rate not recommend that I cancel unpacking given their expertise of what condition lengthy stored items might arrive in? Also, many boxes had a mix of items just thrown in without regard for the protection or delicacy of the items, i.e. shoes with lingerie, kitchen items with linens, light fixtures with hair products. I have a lot of things and this move wasn't easy on both ends, however, my contract wasn't just for transporting items, but also fees for packing and unpacking. Including $500 cash tip for the movers on both ends, I absolutely feel jilted. To add insult to injury, a handful of furniture items were delivered scratched with gashes in the wood that were not there prior and two pieces off hinge. Additionally, right after my pickup, I reached out to my booker that the movers left two picture hangings on wall that I specifically asked to be packed; to this date I've received no response, apology or compensation. My Dirt Devil vacuum and Black & Decker drill are missing; as well as the moving blanket I borrowed from a friend seems to have been accidentally taken during unpack. The only thing that got me through the delivery was how great the foreman was. I really wish the packing had been done better so that they could have unpacked better and helped me more because they had such great attitudes. Unfortunately, I had to release them as it was futile due to hapless packing and dirt on the furniture. Plus what they were unpacking actually was creating work. Moving is a strain enough as it is, even more so as a single woman, and without a company covering long distance and the long storage expenses. I am hoping that Flat Rate does the right thing with reparations for the claim and photo documentation I submit. Should you select Flat Rate, please be proactive to ensure you do endure the damages and occurrences I had. Photos are posted to show above. read more

Photos are posted to show above. read more

This is my 57th review and I pride myself on being fair and even handed. While I have not always been delighted with the services I have received, I have never called a company deplorable- nor would I do so lightly. I was having my apt painted and floors redone so needed to have my furniture removed, hence my call to Flat Rate. I carefully planned the timing of the painters, flooring install, and the movers (even allotting a few days"wiggle room") as I was having people over for Passover and Easter. The first group of movers pick up my furniture to bring to Flat Rates' warehouse in NJ. A little over a week later, they were to be returned. The second group of movers arrive and were almost finished, when I was advised that there was "a problem." I accompany him to my lobby where I find my very expensive side buffet, upside down with the back leg and adjoining area smashed to pieces. He admitted this was his fault and that it occurred days before when loading my furniture from the warehouse into the truck. I asked why someone from Flat Rate didn't call me prior to delivery? He was instructed to deliver it broken, and to advise me to file a clam. This was the first red flag- Flat Rate was aware they damaged my furniture and yet, for some inexplicable reason, felt no obligation to let me know beforehand? I called customer service immediately and assumed they would be as concerned as I was. I assumed incorrectly - their response was "oh, sorry -fill out the form and send it back to us". I filled out the form, included photos, and a receipt which shows the cost of the piece. They also ask for the weight - which is absurd. Not sure about all of you, but I can't for the life of me remember when I weighed a piece of my furniture. Clearly another red flag. Saying I was devastated about the damage that Flat Rate caused would be an gross understatement. Just to clarify, if this were a piece from Crate & Barrel, sure I would be upset, but we are talking about a piece that was bought as an investment, and over $6,900. Since I was aware of the value, I opted for their insurance which was to cove me for $10,000. I receive an ambiguous email from their Customer Service Dept - I say ambiguous as it was signed "customer service" (no actual name of a person to follow-up with). They tell me to contact "their vendor" All Furniture Services so they can come and assess the damage. AFS arrives three days later - the guy tells me how great he is, and that he can "fix it" Fix it? Even if AFS were miracle workers and could "fix it", the piece would no longer have the same value. To add insult to injury, I needed to call 20 people to tell them to find alternative arrangements for the holidays as I now have a large piece of furniture sitting in my kitchen, and my kitchen furniture in my living room, so clearly I cannot have people over- another big thank you to Flat Rate from my friends & family whose holiday plans were cancelled the day before! I then receive an email to advise that my claim is now "closed". They have graciously decided to offer me $250.00 as a "courtesy". So Flat Rate just damaged a $6,900 piece of furniture, and their idea of settling my claim is to offer me $250.00? They said I can have it repaired by AFS for $450.00. As per Flat Rate, I have a $500.00 deductible so while they state that they will "repair or replace any damaged furniture", in actuality, you are the one who pays for the repair. I am far from obtuse so what am I missing here? I still have the broken piece of furniture in my kitchen (where their men promptly dumped it) and my apartment looks as though I just moved-in, instead of just being redone. Flat Rate is not disputing that the caused the damage - so the big question is why would any reputable company not take responsibility and offer to replace the piece? They are under the misconception that an offer of $250. will cover my inconvenience Inconvenience doesn't even begin to describe what I have been through - all due to Flat Rates' negligence. They have decided to wash their hands of the matter, I on the other hand have not. I called Customer Service to ask for the name/email address for someone on their management team. Nope sorry - "we cannot provide that information" I work in management for one of the largest privately owned companies in the U.S. We gladly provide contact info for anyone in our company. Why? - because any company with integrity actually WANTS to hear from their customers -whether for a compliment or complaint. That is what good companies do. That is what ethics and good business practices are all about. Clearly Flat Rate has none. read more
