Sel repaired a patch of warped hardwood in our dinning room and he did an amazing job. The patch matched perfectly. The best thing about the work is that the products he used for the finishing did not cause my asthma to flare up. When we originally had the floors done the previous flooring contractor used a varnish that was extremely toxic and gave me breathing issues for several weeks until the varnish fully dried. I am definitely going to call Sel again when we have additional flooring work, which we will - because, you know, the joys of home ownership..... read more

He and his small team were on time and worked diligently. Although I moved small items, they moved the large pieces of furniture from room to room. Nothing was damaged. We found Mr. Kartal on craigslist and were very pleased with his services and pricing. We needed cheapie laminate IKEA flooring installed in a basement storage space, and the floor needed to be leveled prior to installment. We had all the materials, but after one experience installing floors ourselves, knew it was best left to the professionals. I spoke with him on a Thursday and he started that Saturday, and was done by Sunday. He worked really hard, and was very flexible about getting done what needed to be done on the spot. I live on a second floor apartment in a building which has settled over the years and hence my floor was pretty uneven, sagging badly in the middle. We had our bathroom floor remodeled by Sel and man, what an awesome experience it has been. He not only gave the best quote - neither the lowest, nor the highest however had all the details clearly laid out, but also suggested what kind of tiles to buy and where to buy them from. For an uninitiated person like me that was very helpful. It was a bit difficult to secure his availability as he runs very busy but once he started on the job then he was the best professional I have worked with. I had some issues with the water seeping into the baseboards so he fixed that for a very nominal charge. He also took care of some patchwork for my kitchen and didn't charge me at all for that. We had originally selected another company for our hardwood floors. After delays of more than 10 weeks, weeks without any communication and feeling strung along (and a bit of bait and switch), we decided to cxl our order and start all over again. After reading the great reviews on Yelp, I called Floorence at ~ 10am on a Saturday and Sel was out here (in Half Moon Bay) by 2pm to do a walk thru for the bid. After meeting with Sel and determining that his bid was comparable to the first contractor, we chose Floorence. We are so grateful we chose Sel. Our original estimate for the install was "a few days" (and we'd need to stay at a hotel). Sel let us know that it would take at least a week and it wound up taking nearly two weeks. The original outfit was either going to slap the floor in or let us know about the additional time needed once we were at the hotel...either way, a bad scenario. Sel is not a floor installer, he is a craftsman. If something doesn't look right, he does not hesitate to pull it and start over. Sel's attention to detail is amazing. Sel and crew were out here each morning and they cleaned things up at the end of each day. Sel kept us informed throughout the process. We adjusted a few things along the way (per Sel's recommendations). Sel and team worked hard each day and they put in very long hours, they were professional and Sel made the process easy. I wish all of our contractors were at professional, honest and reliable as Sel. We are already planning to bring Sel in for future projects and we wouldn't hesitate to recommend him. Most of all, he is a perfectionist and super clean and tidy. His work is superb and we are thrilled with the result of our new hardwood floors. I had interviewed 4 flooring contractors and I knew that Sel was the one to do the job once I met him. He is so knowledgeable about all types of flooring, including demo and subfloor. I am very particular myself, so he was the person to do the job. He came everyday first thing in the morning and stayed till the evening. He was amazing from start to finish and a joy to have in my home. I would hire him again in a second and would recommend him to anyone. My new hardwood floors look amazing. Not an easy job either. He had to pull out a lot of old tile in different areas and build a couple of subfloors to match the other areas of the house to make it all the same level within 700 sq feet of the home. He finished it off with amazing new tiles in the bathroom that look seamless with our wood floors. He replaced the baseboards as if they were brand new, including painting them so nicely. He also made the transitions look great and the heater vents he custom built to match the existing floor. Really, phenomenal work. I found Sel from Yelp and contacted him about a hardwood floor installation job at my residence. Sel responded quickly and come down for an estimate. You can immediately tell that Sel knew what he's talking about, and he was very meticulous about measuring and pointing out all the details about the job without me having to tell him what needed to be done. The estimate price is very clear, concise, and there's no hidden extra charges. Every single detail is outlined including possible extra works like evening out the concrete after removing the carpet. While Sel's bid was not the cheapest out of the 4 bids that I got, but sure I felt most confident with Sel and so I went ahead with him. Sel was able to accommodate my schedule, and arrived with his awesome field manager Murat on time for the job. I have a lot of furniture to be moved about in the living room and they did a great job moving and restoring them into place. The craftsmanship from these guys is top-notch. My selection of wood is lighter in color and have quite a few textures that Sel was able to carefully pick and choose to achieve a natural and evenly-distributed look. They cleaned up well after the job and also helped me put floor protecting pads underneath all furniture legs. They are friendly and easy to work with, and most importantly my floor looks fantastic. At the end of the job I paid exactly what I was expected to pay, no hidden fees or surprises. Sel estimated 585 sqft of work and recommended that I get about 620 sqft of wood, and there were almost no extra wood left, so the estimate was spot-on with no wasted materials. I feel very lucky that I've had Sel who changed our 1100 sqft carpet-floor to the hardwood floor with a great satisfaction. This is a long overdue review. In fact, two long overdue reviews! 1. In 2014 we hired Sel to install hardwood floors in a multi unit property. Sel was very knowledgeable and professional, the work was done timely, and the quality was (and has been) great. We were very happy that we used Sel. BUT we were most thankful and couldn't be happier that he helped us on our second project... 2. In 2015 we decided to renovate another smaller property. Unfortunately Sel was on a family leave during the time of the renovation so we hired Home Depot to do the floor. The quality was disappointing to say the least. We had HD to come back a couple of times to fix a number of problems. But right before our tenant's move-in we discovered another issue, and we had no time to wait. I immediately called Sel to try my luck that he might be back from vacation by then. Thank goodness he was back. He squeezed in his busy work schedule and came by that day at 6pm after work. He then spent the next 1.5 hours fixed the problem. The amazing and unexpected part: when I was ready to (and happy to) pay for his overtime, he said he couldn't feel right to charge a repeat customer for such a trivial job! It's not the money that I was happy to pay but put back to my pocket earns our future business. Nor was it the reason I spend time to write a review (after all it took me a long time to come to writing this review). It is Sel, who genuinely cares for his customers, cares for earning businesses, and is good at what he does. Sel is the best tile guy around! (Also installed our hardwood). He was super detailed when he quoted us for changing our bland fireplace to a great stacked stone look. His work was amazing and takes everything into account. Very prompt, the work was amazing and his rates were the same or better than other quotes I received. He made a small channel in the fireplace stone where the pieces were removable so we could hide the tv cable behind there, then put the stone pieces back. He even mentioned that he smelled gas outside the house, and sure enough there was a small leak at the meter that PG&E fixed. I hired Sel after finding him on the Craigslist for hardwood refinishing job that I wanted to get done. As with other services, I was a little bit apprehensive about hiring him without any references. Then I came across Yelp and my mind was made 50%. Next was request for a quote... he came on time, looked under the carpet in various rooms and sent me the estimate. I noticed that although he had to remove carpet in all rooms to check state of hard wood under it, he spent close to 10 min to fix the carpet so it looks like it was before he removed it (other folks left carpet in removed state). So after getting a few more estimates, I found Sel's estimate to be on the higher side (not the highest though). however after meeting with him and seeing him so serious and passionate about his work, made me feel good and I went with my gut feeling and hired him. Although he was busy at a much bigger job, I requested an earlier appointment so I can club flooring work with other renovation in the house and reduce the impact time on the family. He not only honored that request, he also showed up ON TIME with his crew. he worked like someone who enjoys what he does. Unfortunately once we removed the carpet, we found way too many bad parts on the floor under the carpet and he gave me the true picture and pricing impact. He even gave me discount to reduce total financial pain factor on me (without asking for it). Furthermore, we had to replace majority of wood in living room (it was bad) which made older wood in multiple places stand out (spoiling all the new wood we installed). So he called me late at night and suggested that I replace those parts to make the entire living area looked uniform and new and beautiful and even offered to eat the labor cost (only charge the material). It was a GREAT decision... living area looks like a beauty. All thanks to him! Overall, he worked extra hours to finish the job in promised time (even though actual scope went through the roof due to all the bad hardwood under the carpet). He showed passion in his work and took pride in it... which to me is very important. I Am already hiring him to do baseboards now :-) read more

I hired Sel Kartal to install my kitchen floor. His quote was very fair which was important but we also read his Yelp ranking which all said he did good work. In fact he was a craftsman when it came to installing our laminate flooring. While he was working and removed our old laminate flooring, he discovered there was alarge gap in the sub floor and in other locations we noticed the floor was uneven. With our previous floor, our old installer overlooked these imperfections which caused our floor to prematurely ware in the problem areas. We asked Sel to correct the problem and he gave us a fair cost adjustment for the extra work and materials needed to repair gap and level the sub floor. We were very happy with his work... I came across Kartal and Floorence on Yelp when looking for tile installers earlier this week. After reading his great reviews, I decided to give him a call. He was able to come over that afternoon to check out the project which consisted of replacing six 24" porcelain tile that had cracked in the kitchen area after just a couple years of installation. He provided a very reasonable and competitive estimate compared to other estimates I had already received. I found Kartal to be a very straightforward, honest guy so decided to have him do the work. A few days later on the day of the project, Kartal and two of his workers came over early in the morning as scheduled to get started. When they began removing the broken tile, he very quickly saw how bad the original tile installation was done by how the sub-floor was treated and how the thin set was previously applied. The project turned out not to be a simple swap out of 6 tiles but Kartal and his team took the time to address all the issues and installed the new tiles which all came out perfectly! They also re-grouted the majority of the kitchen and part of the entry way into the kitchen where there were gaps in the grout. I have to give Kartal 5 stars due his outstanding work, professionalism and just ease of working with him and his crew. We have a couple of other major tile projects on the horizon and I will be calling Kartal to help with those as well. read more

Floorence, a flooring company, is owned and operated by Sel Kartal, who is perhaps the best contractor I have had the pleasure of working with. His company does several types of flooring, and I contacted him to do some new hardwood floors in several rooms and closets, as well as rehabbing some old floors. This project was extensive and required two weeks to complete, followed by a couple of weeks of keeping the house airing. Prior to the job starting, we moved furniture and packed lots of stuff in boxes. We turned our house over to Sel, and took a vacation. I've never done this(turning my house over to a relative stranger), but in getting to know Sel, I found that I could totally trust him and I did. What followed was a dream job. I had given Sel authorization to proceed as he determined best. OMG, the rsults were breath-taking. Beautiful new floors, perfectly matched throughout the house. In addition, Sel had painted many surfaces and new baseboards, painted risers on the stairs. refinished the Newell posts and fixed numerous installation errors by his predecessors, fixing all the defects in all of the floors. He had also scrubbed so much of the house that many parts appeared to have been repainted. SEl takes such pride in his work and efforts to give his customers the best possible result, that his work is exemplary and his work ethic is incredible. We are now in the middle of a remodeling job and ran into subfloor/level issues when we connected 2 rooms together. I had to fix a couple laminate pieces that were ill fitting and raised from a previous contractor and needed to re-tile the bathroom floor. After searching thoroughly through yelp, I fortunately I came across Sel at Floorence. He had great reviews so I decided to contact him first. He immediately answered his phone and agreed to meet the same day for an estimate. I decided to contact a couple others to obtain comparable estimates but either I had to leave messages and did not get called back as promised or their reviews weren't that great and I wasn't interested in having average work done on my rental unit. So off to meet with Sel- who showed up on time as promised and came in professionally with a tape measure, pad and pen for notes and an arsenal of knowledge and described in detail how he would go about doing the work. He took down all the measurements and said he would email me the cost. I appreciated his honesty and professionalism. After receiving the estimate, it was slightly over what I allocated in the budget for repairs as this is a rental unit but knew there was no one else I wanted to do the work but Sel, so I let him know the budget and BINGO!
