I'm coming from Chicago where amazing Latinx food was abundant, but there aren't as many choices up here in Maine. This is one of the better places I've tried. Really good at times, average at times. Most recently I thought the pork was really dry; could be an El Salvadorian style, but I've had a selection before that was moist and flavorful. Crossed another off my list of places I've been wanting to check off for over 5 years. Flores has been a bucket list item for a while. I saw them expand to their current location on Congress and still never got the chance to go. Ordered the pupusas and tamales because tamales are among my most favorite thing in the world. Staff was friendly and the ambiance was much more modern than I expected (I was thinking it would be more homey than modern). They played Latin music videos on the screen. Food came out pretty soon after ordering and let's just say I ate everything. Pupusas were stellar and the tamales were damn good. If you have any self respect I would go here. read more

Holy crap this place is amazing. I am Venezuelan but I've never tried Salvadorian food. I figured since I love Venezuelan food this couldn't be too far off. I was delighted with it! The flavors that they put together were uniquely delicious and perfect. I got a pupusa and the grilled steak plate. Both of them were so great. I think I'm still partial towards my Venezuelan food, but if I ever see a Salvadorian restaurant again I will go out of my way to visit. Really highly recommend! read more

I ordered the chicken meal and a papusa. Papusa came with a reddish - orange sauce and a coleslaw salad mixture and was wonderful. I wish I would have ordered more than one! The chicken meal came with grilled chicken, seasoned rice, terrier beans and a fresh mix of onion, tomato, cilantro plus cheese mixture with a lime juice flavor. Would be 4 stars but I marked I wanted silverware. Then when you check out it has another option to opt out of silverware I left blank. Im traveling and would have preferred if they had included. Flores is a tiny, barely noticeable, hidden gem on Congress street in Portland, Maine. If you're familiar with Salvadoran food - especially pupusas (obviously) - you need to stop here. The pupusas are perfect. Not too thin & lacking filling, and not too thick with too much Maseca. They remind me of true Salvadoran pupusas. Their curtido and salsa is perfect. If you've never tried pupusas I'd recommend the cheese and loroco (queso con loroco) or the pork (chicharron). Loroco is a vegetable native to El Salvador. I also love their chicken tamales & their chicken and cheese empanadas. This review comes from a Caucasian woman who has been to El Salvador three times, who has two half Salvadoran daughters. What a great find! Needed quick pre theater supper before going to the Merrill. Sat down to beautiful tropical margaritas rimmed with Tajin, a Chile lime salt. The shrimp tacos were sweet and tender with thick chewy tortillas more like flatbread. The lupus's was the size of dinner plate and loaded with cheese. Portland has very few Latin American food establishments, and that's a culinary shame. Luckily, Flores Restaurant has opened to rescue us! The menu comes in both Spanish and English, with two sides and dozens of choices. Super small and cozy inside; few seats during Covid but they do have inside dining (and takeout, of course). We ordered a variety of dishes: a delicious chicken tamale served piping hot and on a banana leaf; a huge, well done pork chop served on bed of tasty yellow rice; pounded, grilled chicken breast with onions was a bit fatty, and not our favorite item. Fried yucca with chicharron on top was incredibly flavorful and filling. Fried plantains came out sweet, hot and tender. Overall, this is a welcome addition to the ethnic dining scene. They cook everything fresh, so don't expect a quick in and out. Orders come out of the kitchen when they are ready. Super close to five stars - a definitely stop when you're in the area! read more

I'm kicking myself for not discovering this place sooner. It's a gem and deserves way more traffic and I hope this post will help just that. It's right next to the Mexican market on the other site of Maine Med, there is no sign so it's a bit 'speakeasy-eque' and I learnt about it through word of mouth. Although the place is kind of like a hole in the wall, it is SO clean and well lit. You would not have thought so from outside. The owner, who was also our server, took great care of us and was extremely sweet. The food was the star of the night! It seems so authentic, tasty, at a very reasonable price. We got the Pupusas (classic & Cheese), horchata (roasted rice drink?!), fried yucca, and the classic rice, bean with chicken. The chicken, in additional to everything else, was AMAZING! Wife went in and ordered 4 pupusas. 2 chicken and cheese and 2 beans and cheese. Lady at the counter stated 15 minutes to finish the food. Fast forward 45 minutes and food was still not ready and food from another customer that came in after got their order before hers. Having grown up in Costa Rica, I often crave Central American food. Somehow I didn't know Flores even existed until a couple months ago (I don't think they had a sign until recently?), so I've only gotten food from there twice. The first time we had pupusas and tamales and they were all really good, though I wish the tamales were wrapped in banana leaves instead of aluminum foil. The pupusas were overflowing with gooey, delicious cheese. I had the chicken with onions dinner and my friend had the whole fried fish dinner. We also got tamales and pupusas again. It was SO MUCH FOOD. Everything was really good, from the entrees to the sides. They came with beans and rice and a nice little salad, which had pico de gallo and avocado on it. We haven't tried it yet, but they make quesadilla Salvadoreña, a sweet cheese bread, which my son is super excited about. It's one of his favorites from when he lived in LA. read more

Flores is a family owned and operated restaurant located on congress street. They're literally straight out of El Salvador so they're the real deal. While the inside is smaller featuring communal seating they offer take out as well. They're very kind, personable people and know how to make absolute finger licking good food! I prefer them over "tu casa" (the only other Salvadoran restaurant in Portland) because the food has much bolder flavors and they perfectly cook the meat it's never over cooked. The pollo guisado (chicken stew) is my all time fave but honestly everything here is delicious. No complaints. The pupusas are to die for! I could eat them forever. Very authentic Salvadoran cuisine. I have spent time in Central America, and Salvadoran food is one of my favorite cuisines. I am extremely happy that Portland has two Salvadoran restaurants. Tonight we tried the Salvadoran Tamales, Shrimp cocktail, Fried Plantains and Pupusas Revueltas. The Shrimp cocktail was some of the best I've had in a while. Salvadoran shrimp cocktail is much more soupy and tangy than American shrimp cocktail--just like I like it. We also tried their Horchata, and that was delicious and very reminiscent of Central America. The owners and cooks are also from El Salvador. They are incredibly nice and very accommodating. We even asked for Platanos Fritos y Crema which is not on their menu and they happily prepared these for us. They also made my favorite: Pupusas Revueltas. These are made of beans, pork and cheese. The restaurant is pretty small so if you are planning to bring a big party you may consider takeout instead. This place was so good! I will definitely be coming back! read more

Perfection! I went the Bodega next door, which I love! About 6:25. I popped in at Flores a bit hungry. Looked at menu. Got chicken tamale and empanada to go. It cost less than 5$ and was ready in less than 5minutes. Soft pillowy corn shell crisp exterior and pleasantly seasoned chicken cheese filling in the empanada. Tangy sauce on side. Super affordable, very tasty and good variety for takeout. We ordered through 2dineIn and go the chicken empanada, papusa, tamale, chicken sandwich and stew. The chicken sandwich was so flavorful and the takeout got to us before the bun was soggy. It wasn't spicy to our taste, but we like a lot of heat.
