    Menu part 2, Fall 2025

I was in town for a rally, so I decided to do a take out order of pupusas from Flores to go with pulled pork I had going at home. Their pupusas are the real deal. Perfectly griddled and piping hot, filled with beans and loroco (you can customize your fillings). These pupusas remind me of the ones I used to eat in Central America and per tradition, come with repollo (cabbage salad) and a red sauce for dipping. Nothing fancy, just done right. They have another location further down Congress Street, but this is the more upscale location. They have a well stocked bar with a very kind staff person who quickly took my order. And were showing Sunday football while I was doing my pick up, so you can catch a game while you're there, too. Definitely a great spot, if a little spendy (but what isn't these days).

We took way too long to check this joint out. When you are tired of the swank, walk into this authentic Central American experience. The owner has roots in El Salvador. Yes, it's basic. You'll get flimsy red table shrouds, plastic menus with tiny food thumbnails, and friendly rough-around-the-edges service. The space is large and very welcoming in a typical Latino café way and the music excellent. The food? Ok. But the whole feeling of this place is unique to Portland and much needed to balance out the glitz. Check it out!

    Empanadas

I need to give this place another try and I will update the review. I got the enchiladas salvadorenas, not pictured, and they were incredibly good. I liked the empanadas, though it was a crust I was not used to. But I'm assuming it has more to do with my lack of knowledge on the myriad types of empanadas there can be. I was disappointed in the entree though. It was the scantest serving of chicken. Also, a heads up that the pink sauce is just mayo and ketchup. I love mayo and ketchup but I did go in thinking I was going to be trying something new, again this might just be my own lack of knowledge. For us gringos, heads up, but the rest of the salsas I ordered were fresh and tasty. The pink sauce was very good with the double fried plantains, also not pictured.

Stopped in here for lunch to sample their menu and was very glad that I did. I ordered the Oxtail Soup, which took a bit longer to prepare, but it was full flavored and nicely seasoned. The service was great.

My favorites were the beef stew which was so so tender and the guanabana smoothie which I've never had before. If you can definitely check this place out for a great experience. We will be back.

I could've done without the lettuce in the burrito, and I did remove 1 star because it was falling apart when I got home and I ended up having to use my own (store bought) tortilla, which was disappointing after paying $17 for a burrito. Even so, everything was super flavorful! Tacos would be my recommendation to others. I also very much appreciate that the food is all authentic and handmade, they had picnic tables in the shade for seating, and the chef was welcoming and happy to explain the menu options.

I have heard great things and was really hoping they had pupusas available on the truck... but no such luck. Only tacos, burritos, and quesadillas. That's ok because the very kind gentleman on the truck made the 3 Amigos sound really good! It's one pork, one beef, and one chicken taco on homemade tortillas with the standard fixings - onion, cilantro, guac, and salsa. I will say that the homemade tortillas are very good, though different than most I've had. They are soft to the point of almost being creamy? Very very rich, reminded me of the base of a sope. The meats were absolutely delicious and grilled and full of flavor. I loved both the pork and the beef, though the fattiness could've used an extra lime or two. I took one bite of the chicken taco and got a couple little bones, so I didn't eat the rest of that one. The sauces were good, though I was told one of the sauces was VERY VERY hot and I didn't detect a lot of spiciness from it. I think overall, I could've used double garnish, double lime, and a lot of extra heat. There are no prices on the board so I was thinking three tacos would come to like $10 - $12. Turns out they are $20 before tax, holy moley. I admit that my expectations were high before I even took a bite, because that price point is a little crazy. I am super curious about the brick and mortar because I'm sure it's a different experience with the food truck. These tacos were definitely tasty enough to do some more research!

That's on me, though, because this is an excellent local restaurant run by a great family. And it says something that they have been around for so long and have even survived (And expanded!) through COVID. The front counter area is a bit crowded and busy because the door opens right up into it. It's efficient but it does mean making your selection and order can be a little awkward if there are others waiting. After the counter, though, there's plenty of space inside to sit down and there are even several tables outside along the building. The food was great. Like I said, it had been a while for me, so I decided to keep it simple and go for a few tacos. I will say that $6-$6.50 feels steep for a single taco. However, I have watched and listened to many chefs say that the idea that Mexican food should be quick and cheap is a huuuge misconception. So, while I'm no food expert, I think that's something to consider, and of course I understand that prices these days for raw materials have increased considerably. Ultimately it's certainly not a cost prohibitive level at this point. I had the Pollo con Mole (Chicken with mole sauce), Taco al Pastor (Pork and pineapple), and the Barbacoa (BBQ goat) Tacos. My favorite by far was the goat. I'm a sucker for Tacos al Pastor so that was good, and the chicken with mole was great. I got an extra order of chips because I didn't realize the tacos came with chips. So heads up on that if you want some chips with your meal. One of the things I was most excited about was the Agua Fresca. Basically it's a fruit juice. They make those and horchata (rice milk) in house with rotating flavors. The agua fresca was strawberry when I got it and it was absolutely delicious. I definitely need to keep Taco Trio in mind the next time I'm hungry for some takeout. They should not be missed!
