We visited this bakery after a trip into DC to see the Ford: Driving America Forward exhibit where the famous red 1954 Ford F100 pickup truck was featured. We had been to Red Truck Bakery before, but not recently so the exhibit was really a memory jog. We ordered the chicken salad sandwich (x3), egg salad, watermelon gazpacho soup (yum!), sausage jalapeño scone (double yum!), chocolate croissant, and a blueberry muffin. The bakery staff were friendly and helpful, and not at all phased by our group of six. Each member of our party raved about their choices. We had been here to visit before. And came back today to see what goodies they had and there were 3 ladies in the back that made me feel really uncomfortable!!! Needless to say an inconvenience to them by asking about a couple of the baked goods. One of them had the audacity to say something to the other one and then they chuckled!! I didn't find a damn thing funny. I like to know what I'm buying. Everything that looks good doesn't always taste good. I am not sure if they didn't want to serve me because of my race but I try never to make the assumption. Yet I know the area I placed myself in as well. Had the lemon Meyer and strawberry basil. The lemon Meyer was your classic lemon pound cake that you can't go wrong but you also feel like you could make it yourself taste and looks wise. The strawberry basil was pretty with a patterned strawberry frosting. The frosting was very yummy but that was like the only strawberry flavor that came through and the basil was overpowering making you feel like you were eating a pesto cake and I honestly couldn't finish a slice once I had eaten all the frosting. read more

I was not expecting to find this wonderful bakery on an exploratory journey. But here it was. Unfortunately, we arrived fully fed so we were limited on what we decided to buy. At first glance, it appears their focus is mostly on cake and pies (which is fine by me). And what really caught my wife's interest was the Almond Cake with Amaretto. Why? Because it was gluten free! Somehow I've never visited Red Truck Rural Bakery before - so today, I stopped in to check them out. This location is on the main drag in downtown Marshall, VA. They offer a ton of baked goods (pies, cakes, cupcakes, cookies, croissants, and more). They also offer hot, pre-made breakfast biscuits - either with bacon or sausage - and with some of their pepper jelly. I was unsure about how a pepper jelly would work out from a flavor profile perspective - but my doubts were unfounded. I ordered the Bacon, egg, and cheese biscuit - and even pre-made - it was fantastic! The biscuit itself was awesome! Outstanding biscuit texture! And the pepper jelly was amazing on this sammich! I also purchased for later - one of their pre-made frozen Chicken pot pies. They also have a pretty awesome selection of dessert style pies - including one I've never tried before - a Peanut pie! I mentioned when I was checking out - that when we were kids - my Mom used to make these incredible Mince Meat pies - and that I've never seen one since. A group of friends and I were at a local AirBnB and the owner had had a copy of the most recent cookbook and had left a load of the lemon blueberry cake for us to sample. We were interested by the cookbook and took a day trip down to the bakery around 3 PM on a Saturday so most things had been sold out. We bought some vanilla chai muffins, a gluten-free chocolate raspberry muffin, and a box of the honeysuckle and sweet tea cake to take back with us. I foolishly thought the muffins would make it back to the car. While waiting for my friends to finishing their selections, I dig into the chocolate chip raspberry muffin without low expectations (I've never had a tasty gluten-free pastry) and was immediately blown away. The muffin was very moist and sweet. I let my friends sample some of my muffin then quickly devoured it in case they wanted more. I moved on to the vanilla chai muffin and was not let down. It was more airy than the gluten free muffin but still was exploding with flavor. We had to leave otherwise I would have bought more things along the way but was definitely thinking a stop by the bakery would be a must on the way home. Upon arriving back to our Airbnb, we unwrapped the honeysuckle and sweet tea cake and each took a slice with an afternoon cup of tea. There are small amounts of what tastes like candies citrus zest towards the bottom and it was moist and sweet like the other goods we had sampled. We also dug into the lemon blueberry loaf that was much lighter and less dense than the honeysuckle and sweet tea cake. They say they have the best coffee on the East Coast....dont believe it. I got a cup of coffee yesterday and it wasn't even like warm and the carafe was flashing 0:00 meaning it needed New Fresh Coffee. I told the young lady at the counter and she literally says "I can Microwave" it for you !! I also advised her that the 1/2 & 1/2 cream carafe was empty and she says ok ... I sat there and drank my Microvwaved coffee for 20-25 minutes and she literally didn't replace either carafe. They weren't busy and during that time she had 2 customers...otherwise she stood there. Have had their baked goods in the past... WAY OVER PRICED !! Plenty of seating but all are hard metal seats. Only street parking. Late Sunday morning of Labor Day weekend, we decided to take a drive out Interstate 66 (NOTE: This is not the 'Real' 66!), and found ourselves in the small town of Marshall. The Red Truck Rural Bakery appeared to be the main attraction on Main street on that morning. We went in and found this bakery to be charming with staff that clearly cared about serving customers. We had one of the "ham scones", a "chocolate croissant", a "cinnamon roll" and a slice of the "tea bread (i.e., raspberries inside)". We ate everything and then my wife bought more "tea bread" to take home. We were able to find a seat, but this place is really popular and seating is the only potential problem. In addition to street parking, additional parking is available behind the store in marked spots. This was one of the highlights of our drive from Northern Virginia. read more

They are known for their granola as well which is moist and chewy loaded with nuts and fruits. Don't miss out on their frozen take home dinners either - the lasagna is super cheesy and delicious and the chicken pot pies are better than grandmas! (Sorry grandma but it's true.) I've been coming to Red Truck Bakery in Marshall for years, especially for their sandwiches. Today i ordered sandwiches, 6 for 77.00, and whoa. WHAT A DISAPPOINTMENT! I'm not sure what happened here. The bread, which used to be cibatta, or wonderfully thick grain, was the equivalent of Wonder Bread. White bread, stale along the edges. Absolutely like you might get at a roadside cafeteria. Will not buy sandwiches here again. I had bragged about their sandwiches to visiting family and it was embarrassing to serve these. And the visiting family PAID! Which made it even more embarrassing. So many yummy options, it was hard to pick just pick one item. I did purchase the Applejack butter pecan cake. OMG! It is absolutely delicious, so moist and lots of flavor. I don't think I could go back and NOT get it again with another cake. I also bought a ham quiche to take home and eat during the week. A friend got the butternut squash quiche, but that one was disappointing. The squash was not cooked. I would of thought that they would of baked the squash before placing inside the quiche, but it was raw. :( even if you rebaked the quiche, it would still be hard. That's too bad. The ham quiche was tasty after reheating it. At one point, there was a section not as combined, but that could of been that I waited to eat the last quarter of the quiche four days later. Not sure. Going back to the cake, I also tasted the pecan pie and chocolate cake/brownie. The pecan pie was good, better than the chocolate cake/brownie, forgot the actual name. Restrooms are in the back and clean. The cashier was friendly, helpful, and packed our goodies neatly. This bakery is super cute and they offer breakfast/lunch specials, ice cream, cakes, cookies, cupcakes, pies, muffins, croissants, breads, etc. We tried a few things and everything we tasted was made with quality ingredients. Some of our favorites were the breakfast sandwich, Focaccia, Flourless Chocolate Truffle Cake, and Moonshine Double Chocolate Cake. The breakfast sandwich was fresh and flavorful. The Focaccia was super fresh and fragrant, the rosemary smells so good. Their cakes are fluffy, not overly sweet, and the flavors are on point. I've been dreading to write this review because I've been a loyal customer and hug fan of Red Truck for over a decade. But since the sale of the business things have gone downhill and fast. I've given them several tries, thinking perhaps an off day. Unfortunately the quality of baked goods has declined (gummy muffins, dry cakes) and decreased in size. I was in the Marshall store on Saturday morning- empty and disorganized display cases with few choices, limited counter staff, very few people. This used to be our go-to place, especially during the early days of the pandemic. However, it has steadily gone down hill in the last year. The baked goods are really hit or miss: muffins are often wet inside, croissants are stale and chewy, and the cookies are stale and occasionally taste like plastic. The sandwiches are really not good, and are sometimes made on grocery store bread (they are not cheap either). I've found hair in my food there on more than one occasion. So why do I keep going back? Well, it's just about the only place in Marshall that's open every day, as well as past 4 o'clock. And occasionally the stuff can be decent, but you just never know. I am really baffled by the hype this place gets. Following them on Instagram, it seems like the owner was a well-connected wealthy guy who decided to open his own bakery as a vanity project. Even when the quality hadn't gone downhill, this place was never amazing. It was average at best, and seemed to benefit from reviews from a lot of the owner's friends. Ordered a Christmas dutch apple pie...paid days in advance of pickup. However, when I went to pick up, at exactly the agreed upon time noted on my receipt, they had sold out of Dutch apple pies. They offered me instead a walnut/ apple pie. I reluctantly accepted. I don't like pies with a great deal of crust. Have never tasted a worst pie in my seventy years!! Half pieces of walnuts dominated the pie, no apples small amount of applesauce at the bottom....Pie was very dry with a massive decorative crust that was tasteless. The pie was inedible.. Paid over $40.00. My complaint after Christmas was ignored. No reimbursement or credit for something else. Also be careful with the deep chocolate cake. Some days very good, other times it tastes like the Duncan Hines cake mix was used. While traveling though we saw this bakery and were very excited to try it! Once inside we probably got carried away since we skipped breakfast and we ordered over $40 of food plus a $25 book. We got a blueberry muffin, a donut, sausage & jalapeño muffin, sausage scone, cinnamon roll, two cupcakes, sausage biscuit, and a coffee. We gathered our goodies and got back on the road. Almost immediately we noticed my choice for breakfast, a blueberry muffin, had been left out. Quickly scanning the rest we thought that was all that we were missing. I figured correcting the issue of one single muffin would be no big deal, but boy was I wrong! To be a cute little rural place in the country they sure have some major trust issues! They did not believe me that I had purchased said muffin or perhaps that I'd purchased anything at all. I'd like to point out that is hadn't been 10 minutes since I'd ordered and paid. I'd like to also point out I have NEON PINk hair! That usually makes me a little memorable. After having to repeatedly list our purchases they did finally locate the sale in their system. Then they verified yes I did buy a muffin, but they are still staring at me like I'm lying. I ask if I can get the muffin I paid for only to be told they don't have any. WAIT - HOLD UP! WHAT? A.) what's in the case w/ the blueberry muffin label? B.) why did you sell me one IF you were "out" of them? C.) how could I be lying about not receiving my muffin if they never existed to be ordered, sold, and put in my bag? I'm told those are gluten free muffins in the case, but that's not what they sold me. At that point I'd had enough and since I don't believe in being rude to retail workers I decided to just leave. I hoped they enjoy the $ they took from me. It was only then that they bothered to offer me a replacement of some sort, but at that point for a bare minimum of 5 minutes they had insinuated I was lying. Every customer in the place had caught on and were shooting me looks. It was incredibly embarrassing to be treated as a dishonest crook when in fact it was the bakery who stole from ME not the other way around. We once again hit the road and my dear hubby is enjoying the items he ordered for himself while I stare out the window since I got shorted my breakfast. He finished one item and asked for the donut he ordered. I'll let you guess - yeah we got shorted that too! Look, straight talk here - mistakes happen. We're all human! However, when you screw up you have to be ready to make it right. You don't deny it so hard you end up insulting the person you've already wronged. We did attempt to make contact with the shop once we realized we were short other items. We couldn't ever get a clear connection with them. This started out over a simple mistake and a muffin of all things, but it ended very badly because of staff escalating to the point of insult instead of simply correcting their mistake. They preferred to assume I wanted to take advantage of the bakery and really became the thieves themselves. Shame on them! read more

Unfortunately since the sale last year, things have declined. The coffee cake that was delicious is now meh. The Ranger cookies that were addictive, are now just sugar laden bombs, plus you don't need the chocolate on top of them. The chocolate chip pumpkin muffin was too heavy on nutmeg. OMG!! It's a good thing I don't live anywhere near this place, I'd be as big as a house! Everything we tried was amazing. Ended up chatting with the unassuming and delightful owner. The staff is laid back, helpful and efficient. My only nit was I didn't see prices posted anywhere on the table with the cakes and pies and I'm not sure I would have purchased the lemon bundt cake if I had known in advance it was $31! It was very good but not $31 good. I don't regret getting it, just a heads up to be aware before you jump in with both feet and your wallet. They were good but not orders of magnitude better than any other option. The service was good and they were able to move people through the line fairly quickly despite the small crowd. The prices were high as you would expect from a small business that was trying to set itself out as a premium brand. If you find yourself in the area it's probably worth stopping in. It's probably not worth going all the way out there if you aren't in the area. read more

Read many reviews and saw the gorgeous pics online of the Shenandoah Apple Cake. Shipped and delivered quickly, but the cake was a mess. Partially collapsed, a mountain of crumbs in the middle (that seemed too perfect to have just been from shipping), and little icing that was discolored and cracking.
