As a black person, I felt so uncomfortable at this gym that I only went once, ended my membership the same day and after speaking with the Membership Director, received a full refund for the month that I paid for. I recently moved to Queens and switched my YMCA from Prospect Park to Flushing. This Y is a major downgrade from the Prospect Park location in so many ways. most importantly the staff. I went to the small pool to do water aerobics. I have a mini tripod that attach to my phone and I watch a YouTube video of water aerobics and follow along. I have done this at at lease 3 different gyms, and SEVERAL times at the Prospect Park YMCA with absolutely no issues whatsoever. As soon as I walk in, although there are many swimmers in the pool, the white lifeguard immediately notices me. She is across the room and starts YELLING at me. "There's no phones allowed in the pool That's the Y's policy!" I say "what policy? I didn't have any issues with the Prospect Park Y." She then yells back, "Well this ain't Prospect Park." Then I ask her what the issue is and she ANGRILY yells, "We're not going to be responsible if you mess up your phone." I reply that I wasn't expecting them to be responsible if I damage my phone and that I'll pit it further away from the water. She waves me off. Then she yells to one of the swimmers that inquired about what was going on "Phones aren't allowed! She's on her phone!' I yell, "Well get the manager if it's a problem." She taps the walkie talkie on her hip and cockily replies "Oh, he's coming!" The manager comes in and says "We can't have phones in the pool, it's against our policy." Then escorts me out of the pool. I was humiliated!!! After I got dressed, I asked him to show me where this policy is written. He could not. All he could say was "It's against our policy to have phones in the pool area and the locker rooms" and gave me his manager's card to contact. After contacting his manager, she explained that their policy is that phones aren't allowed in the locker room nor the pool to protect the member's privacy. In my opinion, this could've been handled MUCH better and it would've been if she didn't immediately see me as a Nefarious Negro up to no good. All the life guard needed to do was ask me what I was doing with the phone. Instead she immediately started yelling and got aggressively defensive. Should I have matched her energy, I would've been labeled the angry black woman, the aggressor and I would've probably been banned from the Y. This was an egregious micro aggression that left me extremely embarrassed and made me feel unsafe. I was escorted out like I was some shady black criminal that should've never had access to that space in the first place. To add to this, the gym is filthy. The pool area had crud on it, the locker rooms were also disgusting. It's also very old with the exception of the cardio room that was recently renovated. Parking is also horrible. If you are black, I would avoid this YMCA at all costs. Not only does the staff not know how to communicate policies properly, and it's clear that they themselves are unclear about the policy, but they come off as RACISTS. This location also has very few black members which could be why the lifeguard was so startled that a Negro was in the midst. read more

Flushing Branch is what I do when I'm trying to hide the limb of a tree that I just broke, and there's no trash can - just a toilet. It doesn't usually work. The Flushing YMCA did a proper investigation into whether I really am a member up in Buffalo - which sucks - but they were very friendly about it. It's busy and spaces are cramped. Equipment is okay. The cardio room isn't that nice and there are only a couple of bikes. The entire facility is very old and cramped. While this is one of the less impressive and most crowded YMCAs I have ever used, I also liked it because it's right in the middle of one of the coolest and most amazing neighborhoods in the whole country. And for that neighborhood to have a YMCA is excellent. Parking definitely sucks, and I was so worried that I was going to get towed because of where I parked, but in the end it went okay and my car was still there. Another concern with this place was that they had a ton of signs all over the place saying that pickpockets are at work and lots of things are being stolen. That's not really what you want to read right before you're trying to focus on a workout. But nothing of mine was stolen so I was glad about that. Pickpockets are one thing, but what about when a bunch of people with measles are rioting outside their own workplace, behind the fences? That's pox-pickets. YMCA isn't the best gym. It doesn't have the newest, shiniest equipment, and it's locker rooms could definitely be cleaner. BUT at this price point of $70 a month for adults in Flushing, it's still pretty good! It has the essentials in the weight room, with a nice variety of machines and weights. I rarely see broken or out of service equipment. The cardio room never gets overly packed, and they have a nice basketball court that I regularly see people using. The pool is decent but constantly packed so I stopped using it. I think it's just packed because corona park's pool closed Overall, it fits my needs and I don't need to spend as much as other gyms in the area. read more

This YMCA was very good to me I enjoyEd working there and meeting new people everyday mostly Asian people they were good to me Christmas time they would give me cards with money in it I was a custodian there and worked in the evening and when people had to do community service I was told to make sure they worked their assignments. I use to let them leave early and mr p fired me for that It's ok I moved on to bigger and better things but nobody said anything about workers stealing funds and donations from the YMCA at that flushing branch but they fired me for letting people leave early from doing community service assignments. read more

How do you rate a place with zero star? I used to come to this YMCA and it was the worst decision of my life. Most disgusting YMCA. EVER. Extremely crowded in locker rooms. Very dirty with hair everywhere, showers with very low water pressure and numerous occasions with no hot water so it leaves you basically showering in cold water the entire time. Pool rarely opens on time because lifeguard is always late which sucks for people like me who would make it there by 5am and would end up waiting around for them to open the pool. This location really treats people unfairly. I tried to sign up for classes here on the scheduled time and when I came in the morning at 9am - it was told to me that the scheduling for sign up was changed to the next week. Okay. Next week Monday at 9am I show up as scheduled exactly on time with only a few people in front of me (no more then 5 people waiting) .... and all of a sudden already 40 people were signed up! How is possible that 40 people were already "signed" up BEFORE the registration time at 9am is beyond me! But clearly something is being done unfairly. Everyone on the line was upset because everyone was waiting to register for this class at the time that was told to us but meanwhile already 40 people who were not present had been signed up. In addition to the unethical way this location "fills" the classes they also tell you at 9am that you need to come back on the same day for a test at 4pm.... do you guys not consider that A. People have to commute back and forth because of this poor planning and B. People have jobs and need to work during that day... it can't be expected that people with have the time to come back and forth all day long during the work week. Whoever is "planning " all of this out is doing a really poor job overall from timing to providing valid information to the fake registration process. This review is specific to Summer Swim camp. Two summers ago my daughter attended Kinder Camp at YMCA; she loved it. The counselors and directors of that camp were wonderful. So I decided, to send she to swim to hone her swimming skills. Unfortunately , I was sorely disappointed. Her swimming abilities have not been accessed and she was placed has a red cap. She was told that she was a good swimmer and when I questioned the camp counselor; I received no response. That is the most concerning issue, you can email or call and you won't get a response. That coupled false advertising earns this camp a one star rating. Also, if you imagine that your child will be playing outside! There is no schedule outdoor time except on special occasions which means field trip to the parking lot. Essentially you are almost paying 4K for indoor arts and crafts! I bought the groupon for $29 one month. The last time I came here was in about 10 yrs ago in junior high. Yesterday I came back for the first time... the gym is very regular, nothing special... clean and ordinary, family environment. My BIGGEST complain is the locker rooms... you don't even have a bench to sit on. Each row of lockers only has 2 or 3 little round stools that can be tipped over easily. ANOTHER PROBLEM is the showers.. so many little round stools .. but I also happened to see women just sitting under the showerhead, on the stools with their bare butts on the stool... AND while i was showering another lady just poked her head into my shower space to ask me if she could move my stuff onto another hanger.. this place does not motivate me to work out. i only ran half an hr n showered quickly to leave asap. i use to work out 3 hrs at crunch & shower half hr. YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR!!!!!!!!! hate this place. really only got it to go swimming with the family on sundays & also to work out. sigh read more

This YMCA is a joke. My first time hearing about YMCA was in Asia and they have all these interesting events and camps for children and young adults. The NY YMCA is alright depends where you go. The Chinatown location is okay but not safe at night. The uptown is alright, and one of the better ones if say. The Chelsea one isn't bad and friendly staff for the most part, but equipment are too new and not the cleanest. This location is one of the worst. Rude staff most of the time, but occasionally a decent one. The only friendly staffs are the janitors. Definitely old equipment and not the cleanest either. The trainers inside is a joke but most gyms around nyc is. With all the trainers I've trained with in different countries, nyc have the most questionable ones. There's a lot of gossip and drama inside, within the staff (even ones that have left but stay in contact). I know many personally through a person a was dating (who used to work there and frequent there for gym and pool). I ended up moving as he became abusive and violent. I'd say they don't have the best background check for staff so be careful. There are also people taking benefits of knowing some staff and putting themselves under those staff to get a cheaper monthly price (and paying the staff under the table for it). Also had another traumatic incident with a staff that used to work there as a lifeguard and occasionally part time there. There are better gyms out there with decent equipment and cheap price like BLINK (especially the one in Chelsea was clean and friendly and spacious). One of my bestfriend came once and never stepped foot inside this YMCA and went to another gym even though it was further for her. The prices for YMCA changes depending which location, Flushing is one of the cheapest ones. Overall, I'd say if you can, PLEASE AVOID this location!!! read more

This YMCA is located on Northern Blvd by the police precinct. I like how it has so much to offer. There are two pools, a large and a small one. They have a weight room, a cardio room (with plenty of treadmills), basketball courts, sauna room, steam room, etc. There are also separate locker rooms for younger girls and women, which helps eliminate crowds. I did notice a lot of older people using the gym, but who cares. I'm not going there to check out the people. read more

The YMCA as a whole is trash! They talk about community building and doing good work but they do not pay summer camp employees fairly. If employees are going into overtime they go in to system and change hours so that it looks like they aren't. They list a persons hours as one thing but tell them something else all in the name of not paying them. Of course when questioned they guilt people by reminding them that the Y does good things for the community and "think of the kids/do it for the kids." To top it off supplies are not always available so certain people have to pay out of their own pockets in order to keep the camp going. I am truly disappointed at knowing this because like everyone else I thought that a nonprofit would be better/ do better than private corporations. This rating is for their gym only. I've been a member here for one year and this gym served me well. I wanted a no frills gym - where I could get my cardio and weights in and then go home. It gets pretty crowded during 5-8PM which is kind of expected. Machines are usually in good working order and decently clean. Only thing that I didn't like was the price. I ended up paying $59 dollars per month for myself even with my employer discount. Just didn't make sense for me to continue paying that much if I wasn't utilizing their pool, sauna, etc. read more

I signed up for my son for a year Membership about 2 years ago. My son NEVER went. The following year, they sent me a renewal Membership letter. I stopped by and requested time reimbursement. They said that's not how works. They never refunded any of my money back and they refused to reimburse time. Some staff were so rude! How did they hire people who lack some serious Customer Service? I used to go to the Y back in high school and it's funny how it hasn't changed too drastically in 15 years. They have replaced the weight machines but the layout is almost exactly the same. I always find it amusing going to the Flushing Y because of the elderly asian crowd but that's why I love it. Not for me but for what this place offers for young ppl and senior citizens. For the 20s/30's crowd - you're better off joining one of the chain gyms like NYSC if you're looking for classes and want a better environment. There are a good number of cardio machines that are in great condition but the classes - not so much. I went to a Friday morning spin class and it wasn't my cup of tea but what I really appreciated about it was that it was tailored for the older crowd. All of the participants knew each other and it gets them active. I came home and asked my mom if she wanted to join the Y! Yes, there are very Korean/Chinese ppl and may scare you in the locker rooms but hey they gotta work out too right? If you get there after midnight the attendant is often asleep so even if you have paid for your room you might not be able to get in at all. Half the time they don't answer the phone at the front desk. The gym and the showers are routinely unclean. The city dumps ex-cons in here and they are completely unsupervised. This is the EPIC gym. This is where irons are pumped and strong minds are trained. I've lost significant amount of fat and gained mad muscles here. Very clean large pool with friendly fellow swimmers. More than enough cardio machines with working tvs on them. The weight room always has the friendly crowd and nice trainers. All size are welcome. No matter you got the look of rosie odonnel or an iron pumping beast, nobody over there is going to judge you. It cost a little bit more than the other gym but it's worth it. Free towel service, clean locker room, friendly receptionist, friendly crowd, no judging, no staring down, no gossips. EPIC. Period read more

Flushing YMCA is just your typical gym. It's not the cheapest per say, but because they do offer family plans and corporate discounts for certain employers, I managed to pay only $38/mo. That's still not cheap, but since it's really near where I live, I choose to go here. The layout of the gym can be quite confusing at first and you might also get hit by a basketball by accident when switching from the cardio room to the weight room and vice versa. There are sufficient treadmills, ellipticals, along with other machines in the cardio room. However, the weight room only has one or two of each weight machine at max. It gets quite packed, and you'll find yourself fighting for a machine or having to share it during your workout. The gym is kept fairly clean. The Y offers different classes throughout the day and sometimes there are events as well. read more

I'm a member here and there's some rude people allowed to do anything that they please such as this Indian man who left all his belonging on the gym bench. When I ask if he is done, he didn't even bother answering my question. Seems like a third world Indian thing to do. He proceeded to push his belongings down the floor and went on to lie his sweaty back on the gym bench then picked up one of his belonging from the floor and placed it on the other bench that I was about to use. I walked away from him and never came close to him again. He has a scary look to him like every third world Indians. $275 for three months for 2 adults ? Not too shabby. I had a day pass to bodhi but halfway there I decided to checkout ymca since it was on the way. So glad I did. The promotion is just for the summer and practically paying like 45 bucks a month to use the gym, courts, pool, fitness classes, etc. The reps were really nice. Jennae signed us up for the membership and during the sign up process she got chewed out by this dumb Asian girl that freaked out about only having one badminton court . Get over yourself, it's a ymca, not some fancy Schmancy fitness center. Anyways, Jennae remained calm and very professional. Once we signed up, another rep Juan gave us a tour. (Had that Asian girl requested a tour before signing up, she would know there's only one court) Needless to say, this is a very good deal for a gym so close. I am new to this so will see how things rate later on. It's definitely bigger than it looks from outside. I've only used the large pool but have been taken on a tour. This place is a maze. Not kidding. Thankfully front desk staff and the rest of staff seem nice and have been helpful while I tries to navigate the place. They have locker rooms for men women boys and girls. Under 18 not allowed in adult locker room. What I found cool they have a machine that retracts water from your bathing suit. So while not completely drying it you aren't carrying a soaking wet suit around. The locker rooms have a steam and sauna room though seemed crowded from what I've seen. When you sign up they tell you dont just walk around naked have consideration for others and how they may feel but that doesnt happen. Majority are walking around naked and sit and fo makeup and lotion and just take their time. Even in the sauna most dont wear bra or undies or suit just naked. Back to the pool its great its divided into sections an area where you can swim however and ones with lanes. They have slow moderate and fast lanes. The membership is 60 a month for adult you can use excercise equipment, pools, there are tons of free classes from yoga to tai chi to Zumba and more. Basketball court, squash court, ping pong room and other things im sure im forgetting. Is it the best place thats 5 stars that makes you feel lile a celebrity. NO. Its 60 a month not 600. So for 60 bucks that is quite a variety to have. read more

I arrived late at night with my Uber ride in front of the Flushing YMCA . Unfortunately ,over the last several days as I communicated with the hotel reservation, there seem to have been a computer glitch ,so I could not make a reservation ,however everyone assured, me that there should still be room when I got there. Sure enough ,the friendly night Watchman took my information and brought me to my room which was absolutely lovely in this historical building .Don't be surprised, that not everything is up-to-date and modernized. The bathrooms and showers are actually down the hall from your room which I think is absolutely great ,because it reminds me of home or back in the day ,that's how you had your bathrooms and you have a separate key everything is safe and secure, the other guests may look a little rough, but they're all very very friendly ,so that made my night quite good. The room was comfortable ,super clean ,it had all the necessary amenities to stay the night. In the morning, since I got up very early, there was of course no coffee ready yet and so I ended up getting great instructions on how to get around Chinatown right outside the Y, from some friendly hotel guests that are quite regular there, everyone I encounter there,or as I'm walking down the street, is friendly ,said good morning, I got a great cup of coffee across the street, watch traffic which was just amazing and still have plenty of time to come back to check out by 9 o'clock at the Y, from there on it was just a short walk away to the subway the bus ,to catch your way into Manhattan ,which ever way you need to go, it's all just a few minutes walk away and if you need to stop for directions someone will help you, that's how nice people are. All in all ,I look forward to another stay at the Y, it can't be soon enough ,I'm short on Bagels and I definitely recommend, if you're looking for a real in the middle of it all trip ,a true adventurous trip ,see history and architecture, you should definitely stay at the YMCA. I do not give bad reviews to hotels unless I really have to. The YMCA guestroom experience was among the worst experiences of my life and I have lived in Pakistan before coming to the US a few years ago ! YMCA has a decent swimming pool and an above average gym. Otherwise the place stinks all the time, service is poor, rooms are small and the beds are superhard. There are only bunkbeds which I came to know later. The washrooms are public with zero privacy and they have separate locks. You have to take keys to the public bathroom ! The rooms and corridors are tiny. In spite of all that they charge close to 90 bucks per day for living in this place. I hope they close the YMCA guestrooms for the general public so that people dont waste their money. read more

The staff that work at the site are committed but the women's locker room is generally dirty and often the showers don't have adequate amenities. Also the maintenance staff starts cleaning while we're still in the locker room changing and the y is not closed yet. This is very uncomfortable.Also the homeless shelter that is upstairs often the men from it are hitting on you as you leave the gym as they hang out outside. For about $50/month you get free classes (pilates, yoga, spin), two pools, showers, a locker room, cardio, a weight room, steam room, and towel service. I'm pretty sure that there are other things that I'm not mentioning. I mainly use this gym for the pools and the cardio. The pools themselves are clean. One is very large at about 8 lanes or so, and the other is small at about half the size. The cardio room has tons of equipment and there's never a wait for a machine. In fact, I was a member of both the Bally's (Chelsea) and the NY Recreation Center, and this place has a better cardio room. The machines are new and the ellipticals, bikes, and treadmills all have their own individual TV screens. The clientele is mostly Asian and tends to be middle-aged to old. And, in general, this gym lacks eye candy, but on the flip side, there's no pressure to dress up. Also, there swim classes are great! read more

There is no way in HELL, I'm paying $90, for staying at that piece of shit, hotel. You have to share a nasty bathroom, with everyone and the room is the size of a jail cell. The front desk treats the customers like shit, and never know the answer, to the simplest questions. They are idiots and don't give a shit about anything. Two years in a row I paid over $200 for a yearly membership for my son and he was unable to use it both years. Over $400 completely wasted. Year one, issues with basketball court scheduling in which they only provided teen time during times that kids are in school - real genius move there. Year two, under construction and closed. Why did they take my money and promise all issues with the basketball court schedule were changed if they knew they were planning a major reconstruction?? I finally decided to get a membership card here after comparing with some other gyms. The biggest reason is that they provide with a lot of group classes that I can follow as a beginner. I am skinny and in a good shape, but I have been lazy for too long and I want to get some muscle now lol They also have a swimming pool, and places for kids and families to do exercises. The other good gym I would recommend is Bodhi, where I have visited and tried once as a guest. It looks bigger than YMCA, and there are more young and strong guys with big muscle working out, so that you will feel excited but also stressful haha. I would suggest it for those advanced trainer since Bodhi is newer and a little bit cheaper than YMCA. But now YMCA has a summer program which is three months for 200, so I joined in this just today. read more

The women's locker rooms are not as clean the ones in LIC but the members here are really nice and friendly. At LIC, I used to get stares from meaty men!I'm a young female and I don't care but would be happier in a place at which no one bothers you. Flushing YMCA is one such place. I went to the large pool at 6pm yesterday. There were 4 lifeguards and they just talked, laughed. But, none of them faced to watch the pool. Suddenly one of lifeguards started to dance and she threw the cone (not the ice cream cone which is orange color cone for alertness) into the pool while few people were swimming. I could understand that they could have fun when they worked. But, throwing something into the pool by lifeguard for her having fun was dangerous. read more

YMCA has always been known to offer a wide variety of things, and it was the same for this place too. But I really need to point out and say this place really really needs to get some serious renovation. From the inside-out it is just so old it's not a comfortable place to do anything here. I mean I'm saying this because if you're paying close to $90 per month there are literally a lot of other places with similar features but are much much more cleaner. But even though after all the things I just said, I still want to point out that the staff in this place is generally pretty nice. One lady in particular, I'm not sure about the name I think it's Lizette, she's a manager here that works behind the membership desk.
