My friend and I were guests at the Flushing YMCA this past weekend and were pretty happy with it. The staff was nice and helpful, room was clean, and the pool and gym facilities were quite nice. They also have a good basic snack bar in the common area, where they'll heat up baked items for you. Not far from the 7 line subway stop (about 10 - 15 min walk), and very close to China Town with lots of authentic places to eat. You get what you pay for, so it's basic. The bathroom could have been cleaner, but I've seen worse. All in all, it was a pretty good stay. read more

This review is specifically for their fitness facilities and staff. Have been attending the Flushing Y since 2012/2013. From the moment you swipe your membership card, you are greeted by friendly staff. Rebecca, Natalie, and Erica just to name a few. Cardio room is awesome- machines include treadmills, bikes, stair master, back rower, arm rotator, and more. Their weight room is perfect- with all the machines you could think of to work every muscle group.Then there are those wonderful fitness teachers like James, Joseph, Ana, Angela, Helena, Eddie, and Nora. They offer Boot Camp, Cross Fit, Yoga & Meditation, Body Circuit Training, Mat Pilates, Core training, kickboxing, Zumba and more! The Y supports kids' fitness & well-being and serves our community. Membership fee is on the higher end, but well worth it! read more

Sorry, but I need to disagree with Joe D's review about the teachers and staff. I have been bringing my 4 kids to the Flushing / Chinatown summer camps over the last 5 years. My youngest had just finished the 2015- 2016 Pre-K program here. I've been to many other programs and day care centers so I can speak from experience. Lois and her staff runs a great program and they have the kids best interests at heart. I'm a bit puzzled. No one has ever asked if my kids had behavior issues prior to signing up. From what I can see, the classes are structured and well run. I've met all the teachers; they are all highly trained, experienced and motivated. Don't take my word for it. Visit the classrooms and you will see that the kids all have smiles on their faces and playing well together. Were I to have toddler number 5, I would definitely enroll him/her in the YMCA summer camp or PreK program. read more

This review if for the guest rooms. First of all, they have a parking lot and if you stay here, you can park for 5 dlls per night which is awesome for people like me who drives when going to NYC. The entrance to the parking lot is on the street behind the the Y entrance. If you've ever stayed at a YMCA, it is not that different. I stayed in a Single Private room. I'm not that picky when it comes to a hostel since I just need a bed to spend the night. The bed was comfortable and clean. The room had a TV, a closet and a mini-fridge. So you have to share the bathroom and for some reason you might think they're dirty, but actually they were clean everytime I used them. The showers have curtains and I think they can do better than that. The area seems safe since there's a police station nearby. If you take the subway, you're just 30 to 40 minutes away from Times Square, depending on the hour. I'm a huge tennis fan, so you're gonna see the Arthur Ashe stadium on the ride to Manhattan. Actually I think this is a great place to stay if you ever go to the US Open. Also, the lady on the front desk was very helpful. I got there before the check-in time, but since there was an available room, she let me go in. read more

Annual fee = $938, (one adult fee and parking fee), this is the most expensive gym in Flushing, NY area for an adult. 2. it's mostly all senior ciztens and teenagers (Price is different for teens and seniors, almost nothing) 3. On the Flushing YMCA website they advertise the hours as Monday - Friday 6am - 10pm (this is false, the locker rooms close at 10pm, everything else closes earlier). This gym closes the earliest in Flushing area. 4. the most unfriendly staff ever. (Really!) 5. You think the sewer smells, well its worse in the locker rooms. 6. There are about 5 AC's in the weight room, you think hell is hot, come in the summer and I will show you hell. 7. The basketball court, the AC is never on and there are so many times when you can't you use it. (They watch movies on the court, senior programs, paid programs) 8. The pools, try to use the showers and see if you don't think you're in a horror movie about to get killed while taking a shower, after throwing up from the smell. 9. The parking lot (remember you have to pay $200 annual) opens up to the restaurant below at nights (not always but often enough, remember your paying $200) good luck on finding parking. 10. It's a hostel as well, you will have people of all sorts there (rehab people as well, government funded, temporary housing). 11. Ask them why they have so many signs as to why you shouldn't put money or valuables in the locker rooms. (Ask if the police were involved). 12. I used to be a member over 10 years ago. Why am I writing a review? Because the conditions were crowded and unsanitary then, and despite my complaints to management and the front desk, they couldn't care less. I love to swim and this Y has a nice large pool which was heated to 80-something degrees. However, there were 3-8 people to a lane. It was hard to swim under such conditions. Half the people in the lanes just hung out and talked, preventing me from touching the end, making a flip turn. But what made me cringe was seeing men spitting in the pool. They did it under the lifeguards' noses. There's spitting everywhere in this Y. In the women's locker room I hear women in shower stalls spitting loudly. Some stay for hours to not only spit, but cut and dye their hair. I could never use the sauna. It's small but the same middle-aged women stay in there for hours, basting themselves with baby oil and milk. There was a sign in many languages not to use oil or milk in the sauna or steam room and to limit the time to use of the showers and sauna, but it was not heeded or enforced. I complained about the spitting problem to the management office and they said they'll get to it. In a couple of weeks, there were signs in English, Spanish and Korean in the women's locker room telling people not to spit in the showers because it spreads disease. I inquired at the main office why there was no sign in Chinese. They said they can't find anyone to write the sign in that language. I thought I was going to laugh. Did they think I was born yesterday? It's Downtown Flushing! They can get any pedestrian outside the building and write it out for them. I continued to use the weightroom for a few weeks longer but I noticed no addition to the no spitting sign in Chinese. Disgusted and annoyed at the lack of concern for members and membership fee increase, I withdrew my membership. Later that year I was sent a survey to fill out from the Y management of Florida, asking for feedback. I wrote about the issue of spitting that went unaddressed. Hopefully, they took care of it and reprimanded the Flushing management. read more

Made a reservation a couples weeks back. When I came in there was a grunge tattooed overweight girl with piercings, blasting rap music with many explicative lyrics in front of everyone, including my child! On top of this I'm sure she was high, considering her eyes were red, and the whole lobby reeked of marijuana! When I went to speak with her she ignored me and walked out. A min later a nice old man sat in the front but he said he couldn't check me in because he was a porter but she would be back from break in 10 min later. After an hour!!!!, The girl comes back, and not to my surprise she couldn't find my reservation, and then charged me $120 for a small single bed that did not fit my child and I. On top of this they don't take credit card (what year is it?) and when I came back down 5 min later to ask for a room that fits two people she said, no, and there are no refunds. The gym is fine, the management is horrible. I tried to cancel my membership and, at best there was a miscommunication and worst the manager/manager-type lied to me. When I tried to cancel, it was nothing but rudeness and attitude. His behavior was so horrible, I will not go back to any YMCA ever. A terrible ending to my membership there. read more

This review is for the hotel only. I stayed here for a few nights, and it was pretty much as expected. I just wanted a safe, clean, and cheap place. The ymca here met all the criteria. I was afraid I would have a dirty, messy place in an unsafe neighborhood, but it ended up being ok. Well this place, its okay, has its ups and downs. Been going here for about 3 years and nothing's changed, except some renovations. The weight room is great and i give the cardio room a 9/10 because of the amount of treadmills and many other cardio machines. Also, the basketball court is great! With four hoops, people can play a full court sized game. The pool is also great, it was pretty dirty at first but they recently cleaned it up and it has a 25ish yard pool but on certain time of the day, it's packed with senior citizens.. ugh... Locker room, not sure about the female locker rooms but the men's locker room is... let's just say, i think i'm scarred for life. The employees are eh, okay i guess. Some are rude, some just don't care and only a few are nice. It's just that one old korean lady at the registration desk. Pretty darn rude to people. But oh well. But overall, the facility is nice and pretty clean! If you want to lose weight and you live around flushing, come to YMCA or go to the crossfit gym in northern blvd. read more

The flushing YMCA particularly is an awesome gym to train at. I have had experiences joining a cheaper gym and wanting to take aerobics or cardio classes, but find the classes are over flowed with other members. I don't feel comfortable in a class size of 50 people. I prefer at least 20-30 members the most in a training class, that way I can communicate with my instructor for better techniques. 15 - 30 people are your typical class sizes at the flushing YMCA. trainers are nice, young, and vigorous. If you have a goal, they will work to help you achieve your goals (my own point of view). They are also a non-for profit organization, and I enjoy the fact that the Flushing YMCA offers financial aid to needy members (kids, teens, students, adults, family). Just like their organizations's goal has been for the past 100+ years, they are here to help the community grow and to become healthier with a good social and physical environment, as well as to create a good cause for both adults and children. You can find ways to save money at the Flushing YMCA, and their staff also finds those loopholes for you too. But I suggest asking about how you can save money on memberships no matter where you go on this earth. They have a collegiate size swimming pool which I enjoy using (as I did a little bit of swimming when I was younger) and the Gym equipment are always being updated to the newer models. I asked a trainer where the YMCA gets the money to update their gyms so promptly, they say that they have a contract with a premier weight lifting manufacturer that offers the non-profit organization top of the line equipment for cheap prices (form of donation) etc. The Flushing YMCA has always been known to help out the community and offer free exercise classes when you become a member (but you can always pay for those exercise classes without being a member - but it would be considerably cheaper to take those exercise classes as a member). Their family plans are also great too, but sadly I don't have a child or another adult living with me under the same roof to take advantage of their family plans and discounts. Still a great gym with a great pool, and the classes offered are legitimate for all age groups, such as Kid's breakdancing (I wish they had adult breakdancing though), Senior Yoga classes, family Pilates or family swim time, they even have The Insanity (work out program) offered at their gym. Awesome! P.s. There's pin pong table, a heavy bag boxing room, and a racquet ball court upstairs also. Nice place! Another thing, people say this place can be expensive... It's not expensive at all, especially if you are eligible for financial aid or membership discounts. You will get more service than you would have imagined for the price you pay there. The only upside of this gym? You get membership for the pool and the gym. The downside? EVERYTHING ELSE. The hours suck especially if you work at night and I don't understand what staff members do really other than take your money. The ladies at the counter taking your towel tokens really ENJOY taking their time giving you a towel. And they don't acknowledge you whatsoever. No "how are you?" or "good morning". Just a snatch of the token, a pause of their phone call (on their cell phone) and a shove of the towel. I understand that Candy Crush or your boyfriend's plead to wanting you may be important, but this is not what I'm paying for. They do have a sauna and a steam room but the steam room is ALWAYS "Out of Order". I put out of order in quotes because a man going to the Y for over 10 years told me that he had to call the front desk for someone to turn it on even when it got fixed in which he had to physically go downstairs because someone had disconnected the phone line from the locker room to the front desk. Considering that most people are paying well over $100 for the registration fee and a $60 membership per month, I would expect service and cleanliness to be on the top of the list. As many people have also mentioned, be careful of the lockers. I have found hair dye material, bandaids, and miscellaneous materials inside them. (Not to mention many bugs climbing on my clothing). I understand that sometimes, it happens during the day time. But a week later, I go to the same locker and it's STILL THERE. The only people I found to be pleasant was the lady at the concession stand (who does go on her phone a lot, not going to lie.) and the people helping you register. (I guess mainly because they NEED to make a good impression because they're the ones taking your money IF YOU DECIDE TO SIGN UP). And if you go at night, you'll witness A LOT. They start cleaning like 30 minutes prior to closing. When you see that they close at 8:30, in reality, it means they close at like 8. And if you're in the steam room or the sauna, no warning prior or announcement, just a simple "get out." I've seen on numerous occasions where the janitor has sat on the bench and played on his phone for a good 30 minutes and not to mention the unusual conversations coming from the janitors. I've heard one janitor mention about the brothels near the YMCA to how they're about to smoke that weed after work. But tonight was probably THE WORST I HAVE EVER SEEN. I saw this one kid who had a learning disability being BULLIED by the janitor. He not only shoved the kid but he asked the kid for his ID. You're witnessing a 40 year old guy picking on a 17 year old kid with a disability. And when a good samaritan mentioned to stop, the janitor stated that it was "none of his business" and the janitor became very verbal in Jamaican and just chuckled along with a YMCA trainer like it was hilarious. The kid also mentioned that he's been KICKED out of the YMCA locker room on numerous occasions from the same guy. If I were that kid, I would definitely sue for discrimination and emotional damage. read more

Went here for the first time the other day. Usually I use the ones in the city. I walked in and had no idea where to go so I patiently waited at the front desk to ask if someone could either show me around or at least give me the low down of where everything is. No one acknowledged me as I stood there. One girl with green hair was on the phone and another girl was going through files. Both making eye contact with me but not asking if I needed anything. I politely said excuse me can you point me to the locker room and all I got was a finger point through the door. The place was a bit of a maze but eventually found it. Went into the locker room and saw they didn't have towel service which at least I now know if I go back. I went and worked for a bit. Came back to use sauna and it was broken. The guys there were complaining it had been broken for a few days now and they were annoyed. Steam room worked fine. I don't think I ever would come back to this one again. read more
