It's now been nearly four months since I joined this gym. I'm still pretty satisfied with it. I neglected to mention in my first review that I paid $239 for 6 months (the longer the membership plan you purchase, the better the deal they give you). No free trials, but they do offer $10 all-day guest passes. As with (probably) most gyms, avoid the hours of 4-6pm on weekdays if you don't like crowds. It never gets unbearable, but you might have to wait for some machines (some of which should probably be replaced). read more

If you're looking for a modern, clean, friendly well staffed gym this is not the place for you. Mold is visibly everywhere, old rusty equipment throughout the gym. The lower level has roaches or large waterbugs running around. I've been going to this gym for about 3 months and during this time I have never seen the "cleaner" vacuum the carpeted areas (do they even have a vacuum?). In fact I have consistently seen the "cleaner" working out on the lower level when he's suppose to be cleaning. The men's bathroom is gross, the sink/vanity is warped & moldy. No hand soap for days at a time, in fact members go to the Dollar Tree store down the block to buy hand soap for the bathroom (see photos). PROS: I live two blocks away, so it's VERY convenient for me to drop in for a workout whenever I want. They have all the machines and equipment you can possibly need for strength training. Downstairs, there is a spacious open room that's great for stretching and privacy for body weight exercises. Despite the "gym bro" culture, everyone is super respectful, minds their own business, and follows all appropriate etiquette/policies. CONS: It's the dirtiest gym I have ever visited, period. The women's' locker room is filthy and always smells. Most of the equipment leaves dark grime on your hands and clothes. There is often a long wait to use one of their two Smith machines. Also, lots of teenagers just hanging out on their phones and taking up space on machines instead of actually working out. TIPS: Try to avoid the busiest hours of Mon-Thu 5pm-7pm and wipe down everything before/after you use it, and you should have a solid experience. read more

If I can give this gym 0 stars I would. I've been coming to this gym for about 2 years and I think they have yet to clean it in those two years. The walls are wrapped with rug which doesn't make sense. The weights stick together because of the moisture. When it rains, it always leaks from the ceiling. There is mold on the ceilings. All the fans are filled with dust. EVERYTHING is filled with dust. There are holes in the walls. I've been to plenty of dirty gyms, but this has to be the worst by far. Idk how they can charge $60 per month and not have the decency clean the place. read more

December 17, 2019 - I purchased a 12 month membership. March thru Sept '20 - covid forces gyms to close. Nov 7, 2020 - I contact the owner, asking for my membership to be paused. I (wrongly) assumed their computer system paused all accounts for 6 months and reboot them when they reopened. I assumed I'd only lose a couple of months of not going to the gym (Sept - Nov). I called the gym and messaged via FB and IG. I finally heard back 10 days later on November 17. Lots of hemming and hawing and he tells me he will "freeze" it for 2 months (but neglected to tell me my account was ending Dec 17, 2020 anyway). Feb 7, 2021 - I walk in to the gym (thinking my account has been frozen) and I'm told I have to PAY for a "new" membership in order to receive my 6 months back. I paid $399 for 12 months. I should not have to pay one penny in order to receive 6 months due to me. read more

Was visiting family for the week from Florida and came across this gym since it was super close to where I was staying at. The gym itself is nothing fancy, it's very old school and a bit small but it had everything I needed to get a great workout in so I loved it! Super Friendly staff and members. This gym makes everyone feel welcome. From young professionals working off stress to grandmothers staying active. It is a fitness democracy in action. If you want a no frills gym that has your basic equipment, and friendly staff that is budget friendly then you will be happy. I should mention they have some basic yoga in the am at this time. They make sign up very easy and don't keep your credit card info so you don't have to worry about automatic renewals. The laid back approach fits the gym. The owner walks around and answers questions which is also a nice touch. Next door is Juice for Life so you can work out and pick up your healthy dinner all in one if you want. I've joined this gym on and off the past few years. Just work gets in the way from continuing my training here sometimes. This has always be a solid well rounded gym. At times some equipment takes a while to get fixed, like when one of the cables break. The people who come here and the staff have all been great. I've never had any issue. Currently, at the time of writing this... I am not a member. Thought it was just overdue to write a review. Parking can be a bit tricky depending on the time you come. The gym is 2 floors. More free weights downstairs and universal upstairs. They have exactly what you need to get in shape. Just have to put in the time. I plan to rejoin the gym one day soon. Only been here a few times as I just signed up not long ago but so far it is amazing. I signed up for one month which is 60$. It's my very first gym. The staff is nice and the people that go there seem chill too. I think most of the people that are there are under 30 years old but there are people from all backgrounds and ages. Me personally just go for cardio which is the front but there are tons of weights and machines towards the back. It is a bit too crowded in my opinion in the back. I usually go to LA Fitness, but my brother and his friends work out here so I had to check it out to get that bro pump. This place is like a serious gym bro's gym. Their weights look like they are inscribed with the blood sweat tears of thousands of gym warriors and oozing steroid energy. If you've seen the Arnold Schwarzenegger movie "pumping iron" this gym gives off that muscle dungeon vibe that Lou Ferrigno aka hulk worked out at. They also detailed all the machines with a jet black and bmw m-blue color which I really liked. If you wanna get big go here, its probably the best gym around the bayside, whitestone, flushing area. read more

I've been a "gym rat" since my days at the Naval Academy, 41 years ago. I really like this gym. Almost every possible piece of equipment you could ever want. Gym personnel are friendly and courteous. If I could make one suggestion it would be to give the aerobic floor a good 'deep cleaning'. The gym has a beautiful wooden floor but it needs a little TLC to be more inviting. read more

I started my membership in January 2020, then COVID happened, and the 6 months we lost can't be credited unless I pay for another membership. I basically got robbed the 6 months that wasn't "anyone's" fault. I never asked for a refund because the front desk told me that it's the rule and that's what Tommy's sticking by. Why would I renew if you hold the 6 months that 'everyone' lost? What is the down-side of this rule? Have you thought about it Tommy? A loyal guest leaves and loses 6 months that was already prepaid?! Makes no sense. I heard A LOT of members chatting about how upset they were. My husband and I received an advertisement in the mail for this gym that said they were running a 48 hour sale: $13 per month! We were very interested in joining at that rate and went into the gym the next day. Although the guy at the counter was very nice he immediately tried to convince us to buy their yearly package. We said we weren't interested in that but would like to sign up for the $13 per month deal. He told us that the person we need to speak to is not in today and will call us tomorrow. I was confused... I've joined other gyms and never had a problem doing so on the stop. Needless to say its been a week and we have not heard from anyone from the gym. We left both our numbers. The gym is pretty decent, I do wish they had more garbage cans for people to throw out their trash.

Seems like a pretty standard gym that caters to muscle heads. Mostly free weights, dungeon area downstairs, and a decent number of treadmills, bikes, and ellipticals. The cardio equipment is in good condition, and when equipment needs repair its taken care of quickly. I've been told the classes are a lot of fun and really effective. Like any gym, the place packs up after 5pm. I don't think there's any way to get around that anywhere. Parking is a bit of a hassle. They don't have their own lot, and the street parking can be difficult. I realize I told people in my Sushi Village review that they should just park a few blocks away and walk their sashimi off, this can be less pleasant when covered in sweat in the dead of winter. I'm sure if you're at a gym and committed to working out that you can also find a way to adapt. The price point is great - I think I paid $319 for 13 months. NYSC - $89/month? Yowza! Its not a luxury gym. There's no spa. There's no pool. The locker room is tiny. I think there's a shower but I dare not enter. Whatever. Its a gym. Go there, work out, go home, shower. Initially I previously gave a 4 star review but then I realized they deserve 5. Place is clean and bathroom despite been a little old is always impeccable. All machines are relatively new and working. All my work outs are given by my online trainer and I have never had issues finding a machine. The lower part is for heavy lyfting and is little older and rough but clean and functional. Things to improve? More zumba classes, they obky have one on Thursday nights , and opening earlier on the weekends, but one of the staff member told me is like a franchise schedule so nothing they could do to change their opening time. Manager and staff are very very friendly and always willing to help you and your work out, if they see you making a bad movement they will come a heko you improve your technic (how cool is that?) They also offer personal training. I paid a 3 month membership but afterward I'm planing to do a longer one. I'm very happy with this gym. Is great for locals. They recently added a power rack to the basement, which was the only thing holding me back from a 5 star review in the past. At this point, they have every piece of equipment that would be needed for a standard olympic, powerlifting, or bodybuilding routine. What a dump, place is dirty equipment is outdated and in bad condition not maintained seats torn. I used to come here about 15 years ago and place much better however it seems it's a different owner now Tom place has not been updated at all since I was here 15 years ago kind of surprised it's still open. When I arrived I was greeted by some very rude guy behind the desk I asked for a tour as I had not been here in a while just wanted to see what stuff looked like since then. He told me "go ahead" like yeah go ahead walk around yourself I was a bit surprised but I walked around I could tell it wasn't great but only planned on signing up for a month since I'm in town visiting family. Fast forward signed up for that month and my experience has been less than satisfactory. As I mentioned earlier the place is in a general state of disrepair. The locker room is gross it smells horrible it's small most of the locker are filthy and broken only 1 shower. The equipment is all the same from 15 years ago maybe a few pieces are newer but even those are in disrepair. I did mention this to the staff they didn't seem to care I asked if the owner or manager was there this rude guy told me he was the manager so I asked about a refund I was told there were no refunds when I asked how can that be he told me the owner Tommy "runs a tight ship" I asked if the owner was there and he had been standing there the whole time saying nothing finally he comes over doesn't introduce himself in a courteous or professional way tells me he's Tommy the owner. I stated my concerns about the condition of the gym and since I had only been there one time I requested a refund I even offered to pay the single day workout fee. I was told there were no refunds on monthly memberships and that I couldn't do the 1 day workout since I already signed a contract all this while this little guy Tommy is being incredibly rude. After a little back and forth he told me if I didn't like it I could leave. So I finished my workout and left. He can keep the $60 for the month it looks like he needs it. It's a shame this guy runs his business this way. Not sure how anyone could have anything positive to say about this place either it's friends and family or they're blind and ignorant. Save your money drive a little further and go somewhere else. read more

This is my favorite place to workout! The staff is very nice and the other customers are as well. Powerhouse has that "real gym" feel that's what I like most about it. Their equipment is not as new as these commercial gyms, but they have plenty of equipment and its well maintained. It's a big gym, two floors. I never had to wait to use a treadmill, unlike other gyms I've been to. The owner is always making improvements, currently renovating the aerobic room. I have been looking for a bodybuilding gym where I can just focus on training hard, and this is the place. There is so much equipment, I felt like a kid in a candy store. Plus the plates are ROUND! If you deadlift, then you understand why that is an important detail. They also have plenty of cardio machines; they are just missing a rower, but it's not a deal breaker. There is a great atmosphere, a nice community feel, and no show-offs, just people serious about training (no matter what level). Also, the owner, Tommy, is very approachable and friendly, and cares about his members. This is not a frilly, frou-frou spa gym. It is a gym to train hard, so if you are serious about training, then this is it. Thank you to Powerhouse Gym for a great facility. If you are looking for glits and glamour, this is not the gym for you. Powerhouse is a no nonsense, straight meathead gym. For the price and location, this is the ideal gym for me. Once you walk in, you will smell iron, rubber and BO. However, if you can get past that and the older equipment, this gym is great. It has every single tool you need to get fit. The gym is split into two levels; the first floor has all the machines and cardio equipment. The second floor has additional machines but mostly weights. The great thing about this gym is that there are a whole lot of benches and weights so if you work mostly with weights, you will never be left waiting. There is also a juice bar and a room downstairs for classes. So for those looking for a hardcode workout or even just a gym to get your work done, this is the place. read more

I've belonged to many gyms throughout my life. Powerhouse on Francis Lewis Blvd is, hands down, my favorite gym of all time. I love the equipment, the cleanliness, the staff, and the members. I always feel welcome. The staff goes out of their way to greet you (morning and midday not so much night crew). This gym has a warm friendly vibe that makes you look forward to coming in. This review is long overdue. Ive been a member for a few months now and I personally love this gym. It has a lot of the weight training equipment I need for my workouts, plain and simple. I'm in and out although high traffic times may not be as quick. Nothing fancy, just the essentials. I like the old school, dungeon-y atmosphere and honestly if youre serious about lifting, this is probably the best gym in the area for you. Aesthetics is not why you join this gym. They have a good amount of cardio machines if youre looking to get your HIIT routine in after sets. They have lockers and shower stalls should you need them. And there is someone constantly cleaning, at least everytime I'm there. Staff is friendly, but not too social which I love. I dont like small talk at the gym. Tommy is a great guy. I got a walk around tour prior to my joining and hey it was exactly what I was looking for. The price was right. I was a member at powerhouse gym many years ago, and have just recently renewed my membership after a 5 year-long break. During these years I've cycled through many gyms in the queens and Long Island area (including many of the popular chain "sports clubs"). If you're looking for a gym with aesthetics, keep looking because powerhouse is not it. Powerhouse is a no bs, lifters gym. The people who work out here are serious gym-goers. You won't see anyone wandering around aimlessly, looking for a piece of equipment to use after swimming in a pool. I would highly recommend for anyone who is serious about fitness. Although the people who work here aren't really friendly, it's not really a big deal, you're there to get fit, not socialize Just a tip though, there are some shady people that lift at powerhouse so watch your stuff. Having been a member, moving to the city and working out at Crunch and 24-Hour Fitness, you really start to appreciate what you had before. Obviously it wasn't expensive and they have good promotions ($300 for 13 months was my deal at the time). But it's not even the low cost that is the main attraction for me--it's the sheer focus on weight training machines that does it right, as well as the respect of fellow gym-goers. How many times have I seen dumbbells being put back in the wrong order, people stomping their foot waiting for you to get off, not putting back the 45-lb plates when they're off the bench press or squat bar, towels left on top of a bench so you wait several minutes before realizing they already goddamn LEFT and you're left wondering if they're done. You know who you are. Not at this place. People are respectful, quiet, spot you if you need it, share advice and give you props (hehe) and there's just so many machines that even on a busy Monday night you won't have to wait long or move onto another machine first. The simply is no other gym that gives you the equipment that Powerhouse does at such a slow price. They are by far the cheapest gym in town and they have just enough to get you pumped up. Although my profile pic tells another story, I have actually been going to Powerhouse Gym for over 10 years and I have always been satisfied. They have a decent amount of treadmills, elliptical machines, weight machines and free weights.They recently renovated the basement where most of the free weights are and they changed out most of the power equipment. Like most gyms they get busy at around 5 pm especially during the pre-spring break season and pre-summer season. The only one negative is parking sucks. You have to park on the street and it's almost impossible unless you go late at night or early in the morning. All in all Powerhouse is an excellent gym with a great price. It serves it's purpose to get you in, get pumped, and be on your way! read more

This gym is perfect if you really SERIOUS about lifting. First, this gym does not have a lot of cardio equipments(i.e. treadmill, elliptical, bikes, etc.) However, it won't be much of a problem because most people at this gym will be lifting. Second, the staff are nice. They are very friendly but do not meddle with your workout and what you do. They will not interfere with your workout and certainly not going to come tell you not to be loud. Third, the basement is straight up old school. Got nothing but free weights. Weights aren't in the best conditions, some are beat up, especially the dumbbells aren't exactly best. However, at the end of the day it gets the job done. Pros: Perfect Gym if you want to pump iron. It is a meathead gym, maybe 12 treadmills, and 6 bikes, but other than that free weights, there are very few machines. The members reflect the gym itself, lots of meatheads. That being said it is a great place to go, workout, get in and get out. You will not be bothered with overcrowded machines and waiting for equipment. That is a huge plus for me. You better make sure you take a tour of this place before you plunk your money down, it certainly isn't for everyone! The best part about Power House Gym is the price, I think it's usually $385 for a year, but they frequently have deals for $300 for a year (which is what my plan is). The first level is filled with treadmills, ellipticals, bikes, machines, and a small section with lighter dumbbells. There are also the locker rooms and a small stretching area tucked away. The Men's locker room sure ain't pretty, but it gets the job done, just like the rest of the place. The basement seems like a dungeon for men, all the free weights are down here, and it's rare to see any women down here except for the fitness classes in the studio. The weights they have appear to be very old, but again, they get the job done. I don't think this gym gets as packed as others that I've been to, but you have your fair share of douchey folk who slam their weights down on purpose. This is probably the best deal you're going to get for a gym membership, and it isn't too shabby. read more

This is a gym for people who are serious about bodybuilding. The only problem is that the equipment is a bit outdated, such as worn treadmill belts and worn upholstery. The flooring needs to be redone and the basement needs to be vacuumed a bit more thoroughly. Dumbbells up to 200lbs, 3 power racks, donkey calf, hammer incline press, 2 life fitness cable pulley/lat pulldown sets. Dumbbells are treated like crap. Most barbells are bent. Everyone else's assessment on this gym is pretty accurate, it's your bare bones gym, not like Equinox, NYSC or Crunch with the frills bells and whistles but it also doesn't carry the ridiculous price tag that those gyms carry. You definitely get alot of mastheads here, the grunters, the "look at mes", the conversators but everyone is pretty dedicated to their routine. I prefer to come here in the morning when it's quieter, plus it gets me going for the day. A little more AC in the summer, a few more TVs and more weekend or night classes (Zumba, Belly dancing etc) would be great. They have yoga, but the room isn't well sealed so you hear the music and rest of the workout noise going on through the whole gym, so there's really no "zen". But for $300+ a year, you really can't beat the deal if you live in the neighborhood. read more

Great gym. No unnecessary frills. It's a gym and not a fitness center or a sports club. You come to work out and you leave. Locker room is really small, at least the men's locker room is. Wide range of machines to use and duplicates of some. Completely packed from 5pm to 7pm and when I mean completely, I mean every machine and bench is being used be someone if not more than one person. As for other members, 98% of them are very nice and have proper gym etiquette. The other 2% is unpleasant. Big guys who portray the meathead stereotype who unnecessarily throw/slam weights around and don't put their weights back. There are also kids who leave their weights everywhere and curl in the squat rack during peak hours. As for a NYC gym, the price can't be beat. This gym has become my second home. read more

Pretty Solid Gym. Not too personable in my opinion but the staff seem on the level. As most have stated its a bare knuckle Rocky type gym. I have and Olympic bench at home so I'm not usually downstairs on the free weights when I go. The free weights are kinda old but they do the job if you do use them. The people there are usually cool or to themselves, I have yet to experience any real rude activity. The main floor is machines and so forth with a few TVs above the treadmills. There is also a juice bar next door. This gym kinda has a cool old fashion feel like ones my dad used to go to. My preferable time to go is after 7pm which dodges the after work crowd. read more
