WHY WE WENT HERE: - SO is growing out his hair; got the contact information of the woman who was to wash, dry, and braid his hair from one of his neighbors - supporting a black-owned business THE LOOK (FROM THE OUTSIDE): - the shop is located in a little plaza off of Stockton Blvd and Lindale Dr (on Stockton Blvd but in between 65th St and Florin Rd) THE LOOK (FROM THE INSIDE): - immediately upon entering there are vending machines to the left (one for drinks, one for snacks) as well as clear glass cases of merchandise on either side - like a typical barbershop/haircut shop there are stations for each worker - there is a decent amount of seating on either side of the shop for customers and/or people accompanying customers both in the front of the shop and by the private room in the back - the private room in the back or beyond that is where the SO got his shampoo/conditioner/haircut/braid services done - Pandora station of up-tempo/chill/uplifting music is playing (songs and station indicated on two mounted flat-screen TVs at the front and back of the shop) SIGNAGE: - immediately upon entering there is a large chalkboard that indicates they are temporarily ONLY accepting CASH payments - there is a large printed banner in the back left that indicates the services provided and the associated prices CUSTOMER SERVICE: - SO's appointment was at 5PM but the woman didn't take him in until around 5:10PM (not bad wait time) - he was SUPER stoked about the end result and raved about how relaxing it was to get his hair washed and dried - she was only charging him $40 for the entire service (which lasted about 1.5 hours from start to finish), and although he was initially going to give her a $10 tip, he was super happy with the service and the end result he decided to give her a $20 tip instead GRIPES: - upon entering the shop, there was something off and once I sat down to wait for the SO to get his hair done, I realized it was because NONE OF THE WORKERS and NONE OF THE CUSTOMERS (exception was one young/underaged worker, myself, my SO as well as a mother-son duo) were wearing a mask/face covering pursuant to the Sacramento County COVID-19 Public Health Order Update posted/updated on 3/3/2021 (https://www.saccounty.net/news/latest-news/Pages/Health-Order-Updated-Schools-and-Sports-Guidance.aspx) which states: "In alignment with Purple Tier 1, the following sectors are open for INDOOR operations with social distancing, face covering, sanitization and *specific modifications: - Hair salons and barbershops" as well as "Please review the California Department of Public Health (https://www.cdph.ca.gov/Programs/CID/DCDC/Pages/COVID-19/guidance-for-face-coverings.aspx) updated face covering mandate, which requires all people in California to wear face coverings when they are outside of the home, with specific exemptions.  As part of the Sacramento County Health Order, it continues to align the County face covering Order with the State mandate." We were a walk in. It's much cleaner than a lot of shops in the area. Energy, music and banter is good. The staff is kind. The prices are fair. There's expected etiquette which I like. The gentleman at the last chair on the right is suuuuppperr good, and super efficient! Very charismatic. I think his name was Dontrell- so sorry if I misspelled it. Often, we talk about a place when it's bad, but we rarely talk about the places that are good, and trying. They didn't waste my time or give a raggedy cut. We got in, and got out. I'm fairly new to South Sacramento and I was in need of my 11-year-old son hair to be cut for first day of school tomorrow. I did not get the lady's name and she did not have any business cards available, but she is 2 chairs in on the right upon entrance of Fly Cuts and styles also she happens to be on the banner of the store website. I'm grateful the lady had an open schedule and was able to schedule my son same day appointment. The environment and the professionalism were welcoming until it was time for her to calculate how much money she owed me in return. The lady preferred cash, so I had drove to the bank where it dispensed $40.00, she charged me 20.00, I like my son's hair cut so I tipped her $5.00. The trouble began she did not have 1 dollar to complete $5.00 that she originally attempted to give me as the change/remaining money owed to me which was $15.00. She put the $5.00 in my hand and I said you owe me $15.00, and she said, "Owe I'm sorry I charged you for an adult". I smiled and followed her back to her station, and she requested the $5.00 back that she had given to me and handed me a 10.00 bill and I paused and told her this still isn't correct. She began calculating mentally as verbally announcing to me that 40-25= 10. I no longer was interested in debating over $5.00 and I took home $10.00 but I was more frustrated with her dishonesty and how uncomfortable she made me doing business with her. He actually listened to what I wanted and delivered exactly what I requested! The shop was clean and everyone was nice. Fly cuts and styles is the only barbershop I go to when Im in town. I've been getting my cuts from these guys since I was in high school and have followed them from location to location. My go to barber is Hop, who has been cutting hair for my family for ages. However, all the barbers are highly skilled and experienced. No matter if it's slick and professional to something special and over the top these guys can handle it. The only thing I recommend is that you call in advance to shorten your potential wait time. Took my nephews and my niece in to get a cut due to some of the good reviews I read. We walked in the front dude was on the phone/cutting hair and everyone else was cutting hair as well so we sat down and waited for someone to acknowledge us. An hour and half passed of me watching people coming in and out and going straight to the chair to get a cut till the front man finally said something to us he assumed we were there for someone else. I think as a business when people enter your place of business you should acknowledge them so that a potential customer does not go unnoticed for an hour and a half due to an assumption it is bad business.
