Danielle, our instructor, was efficient, making the most of our private class by showing us all kinds of fun and challenging tricks in the silks. That said, a few things would've elevated the experience. First and foremost, the silks themselves really need a deep clean. The smell was noticeably off, and that made it uncomfortable anytime we had to lift ourselves into them or get up close for certain movements. I get that it's an active studio, but the silks shouldn't retain that much odor, especially for a private class setting. We had an early 9 a.m. session, and it would've been a nice to 1) do introductions (share a bit about the studio? ask about our 6 party group? more conversational overall...) 2) offer to use the Bluetooth speaker to play music tailored to our vibe, especially since we were celebrating a birthday. We could've asked, sure, but small details like that can make a difference for a private group. Otherwise, the experience could feel a bit impersonal and solely transactional. Danielle's teaching style was quick and assertive, which works for more advanced folks, but most of us were beginners. She tended to demonstrate five or six steps at once, followed by a casual "You got it?" (we indeed did not have it, LOL) We weren't shy about asking for help, though, and I appreciated her patience when we needed things broken down more slowly, especially when it came to knots and footing that didn't feel intuitive or safe without guidance. I also think the silks could've been lifted a bit higher so that we got a more enhanced "aerial" experience. I didn't feel as though we were as lifted from the mat. Despite the speed bumps, it was a fun and memorable way to start our Saturday. Danielle and her daughter Grace were kind enough to take our pictures afterward, and we all left feeling like we'd done something bold and new. I would definitely recommend the experience (with the feedback that the studio give the silks a refresh and perhaps adjust the pace for true first-timers).

This class was focused less on bootcamp exercises and more on actual technique and physical strength building on the lyra (silken ropes) and trapeze bar. You will be inverting, so I highly recommend wearing tight clothing to these classes, unless you want to flash everybody. Anyone can do this and I highly recommend it to those seeking a new twist on upper body and core-building work-outs. Classes here have an excellent sense of structure which in turn leads to better function and they always keep it light! Laughter is abundant. Keys to success in life! Laugh and play! We are incredibly lucky they have opened their home, their heart for what they do and their mind to teach us how to be better movers. The vibe in this studio is a welcome change from multi purposed spaces with different classes and people coming in and out. There are TONS of bushes with different fruits there, which I did not expect.. and also a TON of glass in the sand which is horrible, so BE CAREFUL! There are also spiky plants in the sand as well that hurt if you step on them so at least wear slippers. If you come there with your bike, just know you will have to climb around to get to the beach area. Tons of people windsurfing there which was a pretty cool thing to watch, them being raised up into the air and falling into the water. The view is gorgeous there as well so I naturally had to take tons of photos. There generally ARE people there and you will see them pass by but you can find spots where you are out of view if you want to sunbathe there. Overall a nice little spot to stop by every once in a while while biking by the belt.

What Happened to Plum Beach?…read more Two years ago, I gave Plumb Beach five stars. It was a peaceful little Brooklyn treasure where individuals, couples and families relaxed, people walked their dogs, windsurfers enjoyed the water, and others simply came to enjoy nature. After visiting last weekend on July 28, 2026, I barely recognized it. The issue wasn't the normal sounds of people enjoying the beach. It was extremely loud amplified music from large speakers that could be heard far beyond the groups using them. A senior beachgoer objected when a massive 4'x 3' speaker, positioned only about 10 feet from him and his wife, was turned on at full blast. This couple, along with dozens of other individuals and families, had already been peacefully enjoying the beach before a group of approximately 20+ people, (including babies) arrived and set up beside them with a large tent, enormous speaker and barbecue grills. When the gentleman objected to the volume, the music was initially turned down. Shortly afterward, however, the entire group packed up their tent, speaker and belongings and relocated approximately one city block farther down the beach, near where I was sitting. They then turned the music up extremely loud again. What demonstrates just how excessive the volume was is that even after moving that considerable distance, their music could still be clearly heard back where the gentleman and his wife had been sitting. Near me, it was so loud that I couldn't hear my small personal radio sitting beside me. I watched other beachgoers become frustrated, pack up their belongings and leave what had been a peaceful beach before this group arrived. TO BE CLEAR, this is not about the type, language, or culture of the music. It could have been American, Caribbean, Chinese, Pakistani, Russian, or any other genre or language. The issue is not the music itself--it is the VOLUME. No one person's music should be so loud that everyone around them is forced to listen to it or leave. Public spaces are meant to be shared respectfully so everyone has the opportunity to enjoy them. A few days later, I returned to Plumb Beach hoping my experience had been an isolated incident. Unfortunately, what I found was even more discouraging. The area where the large gathering had been was covered with garbage. There were beer bottles (including broken glass), food containers, disposable plates and cups, plastic bags, charcoal remnants, citrus fruit, and even soiled diapers scattered throughout the sand and among the protected dune vegetation. These aren't just cosmetic issues. Broken glass creates a hazard for people, pets and wildlife, and trash left in the dunes damages one of the most environmentally sensitive parts of the beach. My concern has never been about families gathering or people enjoying themselves. It's about respecting a public beach that belongs to everyone. If you can carry coolers, grills, diapers, food, beverages, and supplies onto the beach, you can carry the empty containers and garbage back off the beach. Plumb Beach WAS one of Brooklyn's peaceful hidden treasures. I sincerely hope stronger enforcement of littering, noise, grilling, and dune protection can help restore the beach so future visitors can enjoy the natural beauty that once made this place so special.

Bicycle Habitat

I had a very poor experience here…read more I brought in my bike for a front shifting issue and was charged for derailleur adjustment twice, but the real issue was not identified. Multiple mechanics suggested I might not know how to shift properly, but the actual problem turned out to be a bent chainring. That was only discovered after I went back multiple times and pushed for them to keep looking. It did not seem like the bike had been properly test ridden before I was told the issue was rider error. Communication was also difficult, and the overall attitude I experienced from staff felt passive aggressive rather than helpful. I was largely left on my own trying to sort out what was going on. They also replaced the wrong bolt on my saddle. When I asked about replacing the correct bolts, I was told they did not have the proper ones, and the issue was not properly resolved. After multiple visits, repeated charges, poor communication, and the real problem being missed until I pushed for further inspection, I would not return.

I've been trying to get my little guy comfortable just gliding around on his new bike. One thing I read suggested detaching the pedals until he's ready. I tried to detach the pedals myself but didn't have the right tools. So I brought it back to Bicycle Habitat to have them just unscrew the pedals. And guess what? They charged me $9! To do about 45 seconds of "labor". For removing the pedals of a bike that I just bought brand new from the store. Does this seem right to you? Seems like money-grubbing greedflation jerkmanship to me. It's sad because I wanted this to be the spot where we could come for repairs, gadgets, and service. After this experience, I'm compelled to look elsewhere. Really kind of shameful.

After starting classes with Ryann, it's been a, going at least twice a week, being flexible about instructors, and making it a part of my weekly routine, no matter what city I find myself in. Ryann has a spectacular way of teaching that just jives with you, and get's you comfortable with yourself, in a yoga environment. She helps you build comfort and confidence in your practice, that you can take with you wherever the journey of life may lead you. I've mainly taken a Gentle Flow & Restorative class that Ryann teaches at Thriveability in West Portal on Fridays at 5:00 p.m. I've also attended her Gentle Flow class at the same studio on Saturdays at 4:30 p.m. Throughout all her classes, Ryann does small bits of guided meditation, trying to get you to disconnect from the busyness of your world, and just to tune into yourself, and be present and in the moment. Her guidance and instructions are also spoken very fluidly and naturally. It doesn't feel like a list of instructions, but a friend trying to walk you through something they authentically enjoy and genuinely care to share with you. She has an extremely friendly and approachable demeanor (and genuinely so.) She listens openly to any pains or issues you might be having with your body that day, and helps with adjustments throughout session according to what you might have told her. Doing yoga more consistently has had such a positive impact on my day to day life. A stronger sense of empathy, attention to detail, patience, kindness, gentleness, the list goes on. I attribute all of that to the confidence and comfort Ryann's classes have helped instill in me --- to disconnect, and embrace every minute, of any session, I might have the pleasure of being a part of (and this just ends up translating to embracing, being grateful, and present, for every minute of everyday!) Yoomi always spends the first few minutes of the session assessing your body and finding areas that are imbalanced. This is pivotal not only for having great form during the session, but also helps build your awareness in your day to day life and enhances the quality of life as you age. Throughout our sessions, Yoomi guides me through each exercise and ensures that I am working out in proper form. After each set, she makes sure that you stretch and shake off your muscles in order to avoid cramping and enhance recovery.
