The ambience I spent all of my childhood vacations on the Gulf Coast walking in the front door is totally walking into some mom and Pop place down along the Gulf Coast. First time at the Flying Fish. The decision to go there was influenced by the Support Ukraine campaign. The spicy grilled Mahi poor boy sandwich was awesome. So was the trout - generous delicious portion. Both came with a pile of fries and some hushpuppies. Shrimp tastes better than at the Blu Fish House. Chocolate cake and Key Lime Pie hit the mark. On a recent visit to northwest Arkansas, my wife and I decided to try two famous catfish restaurants. Flying Fish in Bentonville was our second stop. Downtown Bentonville is very charming. Flying Fish has an old style diner vibe that we found to be cool and fun. The staff was friendly and obviously hard working, cheerfully handling a very busy night with efficiency. I ordered seafood gumbo. Having lived in Louisiana, I am quite particular about gumbo. This was some of the best I've ever had outside of southern Louisiana. Deep dark roux and lots of shrimp... excellent! The catfish was pretty good, but a little on the greasy side and much more greasy breading than fish. I honestly had a sense that this was an off night for the catfish. The hush-puppies were perfect. I wish I had ordered more. Fries were okay for me, but my wife loved them. The only real disappointment was the fried okra that was cold and not of good flavor. I appreciated the fact -admittedly a personal preference- that they had Coke products. I was making my trip a catfish weekend, but I love Louisiana crawfish. I didn't eat them on this visit but I couldn't help but notice that they looked really great. Next time I'll try them. Because of the greasiness of the fish and the okra I give Flying Fish four stars instead of five. Eat My Catfish in Rogers won my contest this weekend, but I am excited to visit Flying Fish again on my next Arkansas visit. I bet it will be better next time. read more

I also like that the condiments (ketchup, tartar sauce, etc.) are self serve. It can be annoying having to ask for extra this and extra that; just go get it yourself. I got a fried grouper po' boy with pickled green tomatoes. It came with 2 hush puppies (I nixed the fries). I was disappointed in the size of the grouper. I really wanted a nice piece of fish, but it was lost in the bread (which was soft, btw, but still). The tartar sauce is good here; I added some to my sandwich and some fresh lemon juice. I also added some of the pickled green tomatoes and jalapeño tobacco sauce to my sandwich, which was good. But the fact I had to add all of that says something. My brother ordered a red snapper plate which came with sautéed veggies. It looked appetizing, but he said it was pretty bland. My friend (who's vegetarian) got sautéed veggies, a salad, red potatoes and a basket of hush puppies. They aren't playin around with the hush puppies; there's a ton in a basket. She wound up sharing them with the whole table, and we all had several and there were still a lot left. Nice and crispy on the outside, soft on the inside. Good good. That being said, we went to FF in Bentonville tonight and it was beyond terrible! We both got gumbo which was not awful. But everything else was horrible!i Got the hula poppers and they were full of grease and it tasted like old grease, disgusting and inedible. The margaritas were awful and I could not drink, the water tasted like soap and I assume that the glasses were not rinsed well. I spent $35 on the worst food I've ever eaten. We ordered: Grilled Salmon Filet-$18, Cheeseburger-$9.50, Fried Okra and Corn on the Cob. Salmon came as a tiny filet of Salmon with a lemon wedge,,,, nothing else,, just filet and lemon wedge on a piece of tin foil in a big container! Cheeseburger was the thinnest puck of meat I've ever seen and tasted burnt and tough. Corn on the cob tasted old and gross and Okra was not good either. plus the fries that came with burger weren't cooked. All in all,, by far worst place and biggest waste of money! This salad was excellent! The salmon was wonderfully grilled and flavorful. The cranberries and shaved almonds in this dish give it a 10/10. I would highly recommend ordering this salad. I think it should come with two sides of dressing but the tarter sauce pairs nicely with it as well. Overall I am very happy with my choice.
