We have been going here for years. The food is always good and always hot. This trip I went with a cup of crawfish stew and a dozen raw oysters. I had a craving and they're always consistently good. The stew was very good with lots of crawfish. Hubby always, always gets a cup of seafood gumbo and 6 fried shrimp plate. He says their seafood gumbo is some of the best he's ever had. I've always liked the food at Flying Fish. My husband and I enjoy eating there when we go to Firewheel. My complaint with them is that they don't honor their "fishing license" which is a card that is stamped when you buy meals. The card says, for eat 8 meals and get one free. Our ticket had two meals on it so should have counted as two meals. I was told it would only count for one meal because it was one ticket ??? So I asked if I buy one meal then come back in line and buy another meal I'd get credited for two meals? They said yes. Does that make any sense since the license says "eat 8 meals at flying fish and get 1 meal free"!? I ask them to do the right thing. Apparently that seems right to them, but that's deception. I have been going to the GARLAND location for several years. I have pretty much been satisfied until here recently with management change. Not only is the service not good anymore, but now the quality and quantity of the food that I used to pay for I don't get that value anymore. I will definitely not be back. I ordered the Coddle Plate ($18.95), which is described as tilapia and jumbo shrimp sautéed with house seasonings, topped with a creamy cheese sauce mixed with pico de gallo, served with basil white rice. What I received was completely inedible. The tilapia was burnt and tasted almost rotten, not just overcooked but scorched to the point where the flavor was overpowering and unpleasant. The shrimp were also burnt to a crisp. The tails were visibly blackened, not charred for flavor, but burned. I managed maybe three bites before having to stop. No amount of cheese could cover how bad the fish tasted, and it honestly felt like the cheese was being used to mask a serious cooking issue. This was a complete waste of nearly $20. I also ordered the Grits & Gumbo, described as deep-fried grits with a crunchy exterior topped with house seafood gumbo. The grits were hard and bland, not flavorful. The gumbo itself was disappointing: the roux was thin and bitter, lacking depth or seasoning. The only decent part of the dish was the shrimp, but that alone couldn't save it. I finished the gumbo, so I'm not expecting a refund there, but the coddle plate absolutely should be refunded. It was genuinely inedible. Unfortunately, based on this experience, Flying Fish will not be getting any more of my business. Whoever is running the kitchen does not understand execution, seasoning, or basic seafood preparation. Strongly do not recommend. read more

Looks like April 2017 was my last trip in here. Two stars then yikes! Fortunately tonights experience was much better. However,this location in my opinion is the weak link among all the Dallas Ft Worth locations. My fried catfish and shrimp combo accompanied by fries and 2 hush puppies did the trick. This place is awesome and right inside Firewheel Garland! My husband and I were craving seafood/Cajun in our area and came across this place and we were SO glad to have found it! The restaurant is open and spacious and they have such unique wall decor and photos of people from all over. The food seasoning was great and the fried items were perfection! Love their sauces and everything tasted great. It's rare to find places like this in Dallas with game meats for us and we enjoyed our experience and trying something new! I had the catfish basket and gumbo. My fiancé had the crab boil. Just ok. It's not our families first choice in the area for seafood. The menu is large and we've tried several plates. We only go here occasionally when shopping near Firewheel mall. I feel like they need a signature dish that really sets them apart. For instance, Fish & Tails down the road has Pineapple Salmon that keeps bringing us back. A lot of the plates here just lack good seasoning. But if you're just looking for basic fried catfish or shrimp, you'll be fine. Just FYI: the Po-Boys have very little meat on them, mostly bread. We've been a number of times but recently took my sister and niece who were visiting from Florida. Considering I grew up from there I struggle with great seafood places in the heart of Texas. Outside of the pricey seafood joints that fly in fresh fish daily it's really hit and miss. This joint is not different but it's a great contender. Fair prices and lots of variety. Ordered a couple kids meal's (shrimp and chicken tenders) that come in really cute paper boats. Food is inside the boat, has a toy, fries and hush puppies. Kids ate almost the whole boat's worth. Catfish filets have always been solid but I'm a sucker for the grilled plates.
