waiters are extremely slow and i had to wait an hour to get into the place on top of waiting ten minutes to get a damn drink

This is my current favorite place for dinner on the island. Everything is fresh and well prepared. The specials are excellent, as are the desserts. The atmosphere is very laid back and a nice break from the "bar with a restaurant" tacked on that seems be more common in the area. Service was attentive and friendly, as well. Ok, after more consideration, I changed my review to 5 stars, as I would say this is 5 stars for Ocracoke, but 4 stars for a major metropolitan area....being that it's as good as it gets on the island! read more

The atmosphere was cute and quaint when you walk in. There was a lady cutting fresh flowers from the porch to place in water on the tables. Everyone seems like they are family. They have paper on top of the tablecloth and supply crayons for kids (and adults) to explore their artistic talents as they wait for their food. :) The kitchen is semi-open, so u can see the cooks making your food. Yum! My husband and I ordered corned beef hash with poached eggs and hollandaise sauce. Expecting corned beef hash from the can - weren't we surprised with diced potatoes resting on a small bed of bell peppers and onions, real sliced corned beef, the poached eggs and hollandaise sauce. The portion was just right to fill you up - but not "stuff" you. Our son got eggs, bacon, grits and biscuit. Cannot confirm - but he says it was yum. The biscuits were homemade and yummy. We arrived there at an ideal time because it started to fill fast and had a wait line when we were exiting. read more

Had the crab cakes. Best I ever had. Service was a little slow. Might be short staffed at the end of summer.

Offers a nice selection for brunch than your typical diner. They also have a bar so you can enjoy mimosas with your meal where you couldn't at say the pony. I ate breakfast and had the crab bacon omelette with a side of potatoes and toast for $10. The omelette was meh, the crab stuffing was pretty dry and the egg was overcooked. The potatoes were fantastic, actual red potatoes but everything else was pretty mediocre. I heard the sweet potato pancakes are amazing so maybe mine was a fluke. read more

We visited this place for breakfast twice while we spent a week on the island in Sept. 2010. Very quirky little place with excellent food and some of the better service on the island. Really good omelets with fresh seafood and fresh vegetables and herbs. The atmosphere is sort of hip old timey. It's a great place to go for brunch with a small or medium sized group, but it's not a huge physical place so it might be overwhelmed with a larger group. Overall, one of the top places on the island in terms of food, charm and service. read more

We had a great experience here. Our server was named Jenny. She did a great job. The service was amazing. Our drinks and food came out really quickly. I had the flounder special which was cooked very well. I highly suggest you try this place out. It is a little casual for typical beach wear. read more

My wife and I enjoyed the Red Drum immensely. Mine was topped with a shrimp etouffee, and hers with lump crabmeat. The waitstaff was great as well. If it wasn't for a few pesky bones in her fish, this would be a 5 star review. read more

What a treasure to find! Ate there yesterday for the first time and it was a very delightful surprise. Got there in time for their brunch menu and left completely satisfied and ready for a nap. Crabcake was HUGE and not full of "filler". The Pan Perdue and smoked sliced beef sandwich also got rave reviews. The savory pie (aka quiche) was also good but the crust was seriously lacking something (salt?). Dessert however was outstanding!! Warm magno blackberry cobbler with an oat crust and scoop of vanilla and whipped cream was really too good to share (but grudgingly I did). It was heaven in a bowl. Service was very friendly and our server was a delight. Can't wait to go back. read more

I went here with my parents while visiting Ocracoke Island. The food, service, and atmosphere here were amazing. We got there fairly early and by the time we left the restaurant was on a small wait, and this is in October! Our server brought fresh, hot loaves of bread to the table when we first got there. We started with a scallop and shrimp chowder which was really tasty. All of the fish at the restaurant besides the salmon is locally caught so we all opted to go with one of those dishes. All of our meals came with a salad that was tossed with a light crisp dressing. My parents got the nightly specials, my mom ordered the Thai basil cobia, my dad ordered the Parmesan crusted with lemon sauce sheep head, and I ordered the seafood platter that came with blue fish in a delicious lemon sauce, a crab cake, shrimp, scallops, sauteed red potatoes and squash and zucchini. We all sampled each others and everything was amazing! You could tell how fresh the fish was, it was absolutely delicious. I also had lunch for the following day! I will definitely go back the next time I visit Ocracoke! read more

The food was just okay. There are better options on the island. Menu is a little dated and behind the times for fine dining.

After reading the other yelp reviews I decided we should eat here on our day trip to the island. Everything about this place was great. The service was great and the food was excellent. I had their french toast for brunch which was absolutely amazing. I wish I could have stayed for dinner too. I am not sure when I am going to be able to make it back here. read more

This is an eclectic, laid back little place that captures the spirit of Ocracoke nicely. I had the crab cake sandwich, which was excellent and my boyfriend had the crab and bacon omelet, which was also very good. We had great service and noticed several locals eating here, which is always a good sign. Can't wait to go back for dinner! read more

This little new-ish restaurant is the best choice on Ocracoke. The waitstaff was helpful and friendly, and the seafood was fresh, lightly seasoned, and very tasty. I had the pecan encrusted sheepshead (fish) and it was out of this world. The salad and sides were all great. The meals, style, and service is all a little more continental than what you normally find on the Outer Banks and that was refreshing. We ate at 5 restaurants while on Ocracoke and in the end, the Flying Melon was the absolute best! read more

Really good food!!! Best on the island. New location is very nice. Had the seared ahi tuna and it was excellent.

I think this is my newer favorite place on the island. We've only been for breakfast the last two years but it's been fantastic the three times I've been there. Next time we will have to try lunch or dinner! read more

We recently vacationed on Ocracoke. The flying melon was fantastic! We had three kids all under the age of 10 in our party. They all found something they liked on the menu. Best food on the island... Great atmosphere, wonderful service, and delicious food! We ate here a few times during our stay on the island, and though we tried most of the other restaurants this place took the cake. We've had brunch and dinner here. Both meals were very good. Pecan crusted fish with lemon buerre blanc was amazing. Everything is fresh and local. Get there early for dinner or be ready to wait. Stopped by for dinner after 8:00 pm and was told there was a 45 minute wait for a table for two. We enjoyed what was about a 30 minute wait at the bar with a fresh mint mojito and a regional beer. On the pricy side- dinner entrees are $25-$30. read more

I have been coming to Ocracoke for 16 years. And the Flying Melon has been a part of my stay most of those years. I am so pleased the owners and Chef Paula and Michael Schramel finally have a building as fine as their food. We started with hot smoked local blue fish caught by the chef Micheal (he is an avid fisherman) And smoked in his back yard the day before. The capers and red onion lend a perfect counter to the sweetness of the fish. The Clams Casino prepared with a whole clam, béchamel sauce and a garnish of thick smoky bacon was a welcome departure from the average. Also the fried green tomato with shrimp remulade is not to be missed Of the entrées there is not one that is a disappointment. Some that stand out are the crab cakes served with a creole remoulade, the steak au poivre vert, the surprisingly complex curry, or the very authentic gumbo. Their son Nat who dose double duty as waiter and Somilirn is always ready with a surprising and and appropriate wine pairing. The flying Mellon is a must visit wherever you are in OBX read more

Stumbled upon this place while exploring Back Road. Very relieved they were open for brunch and more so once we'd eaten. Hubby (mash with corned beef) , daughters (eggs and bacon) and I (French Toast) wiped the plates clean! Great kids menu, casual upscale decor, super clean. Delightful restaurant in an old home. It was elegant and tasteful and we enjoyed every minute of it. It may be slightly more upscale than than the rest of the island, but everyone still fits right in. We had clams, scallops and drum and crab cakes. If we had to leave off one, it would be the crab cakes (slightly soggy), but overall it exceeded our expectations. read more

This is a wonderful little place on the island. I went here for the first time a few weeks ago. It was my last day on the island and brunch was in order. As far as brunch goes, the service is great and I absolutely love the decor. It is bright and cheerful, not to mention clean. As a connoisseur of bacon, The Flying Melon has delicious bacon. I'm not too crazy about their potatoes, but their biscuits and everything else are wonderful. The eggs could be improved upon and be more warm and scrambled. I certainly want to come here again next year, if possible. read more

Delicious seafood specials and great service. Nice atmosphere. Recommend the ahi tuna if they are serving it. They offered an inexpensive rose that was refreshing for the summer time. I would suggest a clipboard so people could generate a waiting list. There is an uncomfortable rush towards the door at opening that could be avoided. read more
